feat(ui): add time and date format settings and message timestamps - #2223
This PR adds time and date format settings. It also adds a timestamp to each chat message.
Settings (Language tab)
Time format: Auto, 12-hour, 24-hour.
Date format: Auto, MM/DD/YYYY, DD/MM/YYYY, YYYY-MM-DD.
Show relative times in task history. When this is off, the history shows the absolute date and time.
A live preview. "Auto" follows the language that is picked in the dropdown, not the saved language. The format helpers take an optional locale for this.
Timestamps
User messages, and assistant replies after they finish streaming, show when they were sent. The task header shows when the task started.
MessageTimestamp returns nothing for a timestamp that is not a valid date, so a bad stored value cannot break a chat row.
Review notes
The three settings go through the normal updateSettings path. The defaults (Auto, Auto, relative times on) keep the current look.
The three settings are saved together, so they are saved all-or-nothing. In updateSettings, each one is recorded with the value it had, right before it is written. If a write fails, the ones this save already stored are put back, and so is the one whose own write failed, in case it changed the stored value before failing. The sidebar and the editor tab share one store, so saves can overlap. The writes to one key form a chain. The settings import records its writes of these three settings in the same chain (core/config/settingWrites.ts), so a write is put back only while it is the latest one and the stored value is still what it wrote. A failed save does not undo an import, and a failed import does not undo a save, even when they wrote the same value. If overlapping saves all fail, each one restores what was stored before any of them, in whichever order they fail. The user sees an error that says some settings may be left partly changed (errors.settings_save_failed, added in 18 locales), and the webview is refreshed with what is stored, after the values were put back. A failure while writing any other setting follows the existing error path, as before: the error is rethrown. Every other setting is written exactly as before, and the loop is unchanged.
The time format is a radio group (arrow keys and one tab stop). The option that gets focus becomes the selected one.
Most of the diff is the 17 locale files. Only the language strings are added.
Where to look
webview-ui/src/utils/format.ts: formatMessageTime ("Today 2:41 PM", "Yesterday", a weekday, or a date), formatDateTime, formatDateOnly, formatTimeOnly. Each takes the time and date format, and an optional locale for the live preview.
webview-ui/src/components/chat/MessageTimestamp.tsx: the time under a message. It shows nothing for an invalid timestamp. Used in ChatRow.tsx (user, assistant and completion rows) and TaskHeader.tsx.
webview-ui/src/components/settings/LanguageSettings.tsx: the Time/Date controls and the live preview. The time format is a radio group.
webview-ui/src/components/history/TaskItemFooter.tsx: relative or absolute time in the task history.
packages/types/src/global-settings.ts, src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts: the three persisted settings and how they reach the webview.
Saving: src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts (updateSettings, all-or-nothing for the three settings), src/core/config/settingWrites.ts (the write chain shared by a save and an import), src/core/config/importExport.ts (setValuesRestoringDisplaySettings, the import of the three settings).
Test Procedure
pnpm check-types passes in webview-ui, src, and packages/types.
Webview tests for utils, chat, history, and settings pass. Extension tests for the settings save, the import, and the write chain pass.
Manual: open Settings > Language. Change the formats. Check the preview. Press Save. Check a chat message, the task header and the task history.
Import rollback (automated; a write failure cannot be made by hand): pnpm --filter roo-cline test core/config/__tests__/importExport.spec.ts core/config/__tests__/settingWrites.spec.ts core/webview/__tests__/webviewMessageHandler.spec.ts. They cover an import whose write of one of the three settings fails (the others are put back, and the error names any that could not be), a slow write that lands after the failure, and a save and an import that write the same setting. Manually: import a settings file that sets timeFormat, dateFormat and showRelativeTimes, and check the Language tab shows them.
Writing Style: The title and description use Simplified Technical English.
Testing: Tests cover the formats, the preview before Save, the timestamp, and invalid dates.
Visual Snapshot: LanguageSettings.visual.tsx adds baselines for the Language tab in the four themes. The chat message time is masked in the extension host screenshot, because it is the real send time.
Documentation Impact: No documentation change is needed.

Bug Fixes
When saving or importing date and time preferences fails, previous values are restored when possible, and save errors are reported.
Localization
Date and time settings and save-error messages are translated across supported languages.
The change adds configurable time and date formats and relative-time display. It passes these settings through extension state, adds locale-aware formatting and settings previews, displays timestamps in chat and task history, and attempts conditional rollback when writes to these settings fail.

Global and webview state include time format, date format, and relative-time display. Unset values default to automatic formats and relative times enabled. Formatting helpers support locale-aware date and time output and compact message timestamps.
Preference controls and previews webview-ui/src/components/settings/LanguageSettings.tsx, webview-ui/src/components/settings/SettingsView.tsx, webview-ui/src/components/settings/__tests__/*, webview-ui/playwright/gallery/stories.tsx, webview-ui/src/i18n/locales/*/settings.json
The language settings view adds time and date selectors, a relative-times checkbox, and a preview. Settings view wiring saves these preferences. Translations cover the controls and preview. Tests cover selection, saving, previews, and keyboard behavior.
Chat messages and expanded task headers display formatted timestamps. Task history displays relative time by default, or formatted absolute date and time when relative times are disabled. The screenshot test masks message timestamps.
Settings persistence and rollback src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/webviewMessageHandler.spec.ts, src/core/config/importExport.ts, src/core/config/settingWrites.ts, src/core/config/__tests__/*, src/i18n/locales/*/common.json
The settings update and import paths validate and track writes to the three display settings. They attempt conditional rollback after a failed write. Tests cover rollback, overlapping writes, import failures, and refresh errors. Translations add a save-failure message.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue [#2221] is open and directly linked. The changed code adds the requested time and date choices, relative-time control, selected-language preview, chat and task timestamps, and task-header/history display. MessageTimestamp rejects invalid timestamps, and tests cover the chat-row behavior. Defaults remain Auto, Auto, and relative times enabled. The summary reports translations for all supported locales and no new network calls or telemetry.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within [#2221]. Settings schema and state propagation support the new controls. settingWrites.ts, save rollback, import rollback, and validation protect persistence for the three new settings. Localization, chat/history tests, visual fixtures, and timestamp masking support the feature. No unrelated product behavior appears in the reviewed change summary.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No concrete security-boundary failure is introduced. The new updateSettings path validates timeFormat, dateFormat, and showRelativeTimes with globalSettingsSchema before side effects or writes (src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts:772-781). Settings import also validates each global setting before storage (src/core/config/importExport.ts:108-129). The changed UI code formats and displays timestamps; it does not execute input, expose secrets, or alter approval and allowlist enforcement. No changed path adds a secret or PII sink beyond the requested local timestamp display.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
No concrete lifecycle leak or duplicate work path is introduced. The new setting-write queue cleans each per-key queue entry after settlement (src/core/config/settingWrites.ts:115-123). Production save paths finalize writes on success or undo them on failure (webviewMessageHandler.ts:914-935), and import paths restore or finalize all tracked writes (importExport.ts:335-343, 259-270). The tracked-store bookkeeping is pruned when no write remains (settingWrites.ts:163-180, 206-217), and rejected external stores are removed (ContextProxy.ts:364-379). The UI changes add no new listener, watcher, timer, or subscription; the existing ChatRow message listener retains its cleanup.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The prior persistence defect remains. In the changed ContextProxy.updateGlobalState, noteSettingStored(key) and stateCache[key] = value run before globalState.update settles (ContextProxy.ts:364-378). During a failed display-setting save, a concurrent external timeFormat write can set the cache to 12h, remain pending, and then reject. undoSettingWrite sees that pending store through othersStoredSince and skips restoring the failed save (settingWrites.ts:188-216). The rejection handler only removes the store marker; it does not restore the cache or retry rollback. Durable storage can therefore remain at the failed save value, while the cache and refreshed webview report the rejected value. The changed handler invokes this rollback path for failed saves (webviewMessageHandler.ts:914-950).
Resolution
Record external tracked-setting stores only after globalState.update resolves successfully. Update stateCache only after successful persistence. Preserve the own-write bookkeeping used by storeHere and the per-key write queue. Add a regression test that starts a rejected concurrent external tracked-setting write, then fails a save and rolls it back, and asserts both durable storage and the ContextProxy cache contain the prior value.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The prior regression remains. The PR adds durable visible timestamp UI in ChatRow.tsx (user, finished assistant, and completion rows, lines 1251-1406), expanded TaskHeader.tsx (lines 352-358), and an absolute-time branch in TaskItemFooter.tsx (lines 56-64). Focused Vitest tests cover these behaviors, including invalid and showRelativeTimes: false cases. However, the PR adds no Playwright component fixtures or committed snapshots for these states. The only new component snapshots are for LanguageSettings; the Electron sidebar screenshot masks every message-timestamp element, and the existing history-rename story uses the relative-time default.
Resolution
Add Playwright component fixtures and committed snapshots for timestamp-bearing ChatRow, expanded TaskHeader, and TaskItemFooter with showRelativeTimes: false. Run each fixture under dark, light, high-contrast, and high-contrast-light themes. Do not mask timestamp elements in these component snapshots.

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Assert a 24-hour result for the 24-hour case.
This test selects timeFormat: "24h" but expects the fixed mock result "Jan 15, 2024, 2:30 PM". The assertion therefore accepts a 12-hour visible value in the case intended to verify 24-hour display. Use the real formatter with a fixed timestamp, or change the mock to return a format-dependent value and assert that value. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Re Persistence Integrity (a rollback undoing a store made outside a save, e.g. API.setConfiguration() or another ContextProxy.setValues() caller) — 7734ee7.
Valid for the case where the outside store has the same value as the save's write. Rather than route every caller through the queue, ContextProxy.updateGlobalState (which setValue and setValues both end in) now reports each store of a tracked key to settingWrites.ts (noteSettingStored), synchronously. Each write remembers the store count just after its own store, and a rollback restores only if the count is unchanged and the stored value is still what the write stored. A store by anyone else in between is kept, even with the same value. When a rolled-back write hands the key back to the write before it, that write takes the new count.
Tests: a same-value store by setValue, setValues and updateGlobalState (through the real ContextProxy) survives a failed write's rollback; a store of another key does not stop a rollback; and the hand-back case. Removing the ContextProxy call fails 3 tests. Writes from outside are still not queued behind saves; they are only recognised, which is what the rollback needs. Regression Evidence (Playwright fixtures) is unchanged.

Refresh the day label at local midnight.
MessageTimestamp computes "Today" and "Yesterday" only during render. Nothing rerenders the row at midnight, so an open chat can keep the previous day's label. Schedule a rerender at the next local midnight, for example with a setTimeout in MessageTimestamp.

Use a distinct external value in the started-successor test.
The test "leaves what a write read when it started…" stores 24h before the third write starts. The third write therefore reads 24h, which is also the value that finishing the second write hands over. The next.generation === undefined guard in finishSettingWrites can be removed without failing this test, because both paths restore 24h. Store a distinct value such as 12h through contextProxy.setValue before the third write starts, then expect 12h after undo. With the guard present, undo restores 12h. With the guard removed, undo restores 24h, so the assertion detects the regression.

Re Persistence Integrity (the import finished its display writes before the later import steps) — 51587ed.
setValuesRestoringDisplaySettings now returns the display writes still active. importSettingsFromPath finishes them only after every step (current provider name, provider settings, listApiConfigMeta) has succeeded. If one of those steps fails, the writes are put back with the same newer-write protections as before, and the result's error names any display setting that could not be restored (<reason> (these settings could not be restored: …)). The writes stay in the chain during those steps, so a save that writes the same setting meanwhile is kept. Provider profiles and the other global settings that were already written are not undone, as before. Tests: a later step fails (display settings put back, error reported), a later step fails and a restore also fails (named), a same-value save during the later step is kept, and nothing is kept about the writes after a successful import. Skipping the restore in the failure path fails 2 tests.
The Regression Evidence warning (Playwright fixtures for timestamp rows, expanded task header, history footer) is unchanged.

The rollback guard treats every externally reported store as an intervening successful store. The supplied ContextProxy snippet reports a store before awaiting globalState.update, so a rejected external attempt may suppress rollback without replacing the durable value.
The failed save's value can remain persisted without a reported restoration failure.
This can occur when: A display-setting write persists, another ContextProxy attempts to store the same key but its update rejects without persisting, and the original save then fails.

Re Persistence Integrity (a rejected external store of a tracked setting) — not changed.
ContextProxy.updateGlobalState has always written stateCache before globalState.update resolves, and getValue (what the rollback compares) reads that cache. So an external store that is rejected has still changed what the extension reads, and counting it as a store made by someone else is consistent with that: the rollback leaves the value alone. Counting only after the update resolves would need the cache to change only after persistence for every setting, which I have declined on the earlier threads, and own and external stores could not be told apart after the fact without writer identity. The effect is limited to the three display settings, needs an overlapping failed save and a rejected external store, and leaves the stored value as a user-chosen one, not a stale one.
Also pushed: c9bc5d4 (a correction to the store counting, see the thread on settingWrites.ts). An earlier push, b54a377, had two failing handler tests; they pass again as of c9bc5d4 (1,115 tests in core/config, core/webview and i18n).

Add a test for a same-value store that lands while a restore waits in the queue.
The existing same-value tests finish each external store before they call undoSettingWrite. Moving the untouched check in undoSettingWrite (src/core/config/settingWrites.ts:178-188) to call time would still pass them. Removing that check entirely would still fail the existing test "is kept when a failed write is rolled back, even if it stored the same value", so the gap is where the check runs, not whether it exists. The following test issues the external store while the restore is queued behind another undo.
Suggested test

### When a UI change needs a snapshot

Do not attach screenshots to the PR description as evidence; commit the baseline instead so future PRs get regression coverage automatically.
Re Persistence Integrity (a rejected external store of a tracked setting) — this report assesses c9bc5d4; I take the point and have changed it, without changing when ContextProxy updates its cache.
noteSettingStored now says whether it counted the store as one made by someone else, and ContextProxy.updateGlobalState forgets that count (forgetSettingStore) if the update is rejected, then rethrows the original error. A store that never reached storage no longer blocks a rollback. Own stores (saves, imports, restores) are never counted, so nothing to unwind for them. Only tracked keys are wrapped.
Tests: a rejected store of timeFormat by setValue does not stop the failed write from being put back; an untracked key's rejection passes through unchanged; the counting helpers ignore untracked keys and do not go below zero. Removing the forget call fails the first. The stateCache still changes before the update resolves, as for every setting: I have not changed that.
The test count a store of a tracked key only, and never go below zero asserts only the boolean results of noteSettingStored. That result is true for any tracked key, whatever the count. Removing the Math.max(0, …) clamp at settingWrites.ts:76 leaves every assertion in this test passing.
In the complete file, the count is above zero when this test starts. Earlier tests store timeFormat through contextProxy.setValue, and each store is counted. The module-level count is not reset between tests. The forgets in this test therefore never reach the clamp.
A test that assumes a zero starting count fails in the complete file, even with the clamp in place. The test below does not assume a starting value. It forgets more times than any earlier store could leave in the count, so the clamped count is zero. With the clamp, the count is 1 when the rollback runs, so "24h" stays. Without the clamp, the count is negative and returns to the write's generation, so the rollback restores "auto".

@coderabbitai The Persistence Integrity error in your pre-merge report is the same finding on every run: ContextProxy.updateGlobalState records a tracked-setting store and updates stateCache before globalState.update resolves. Please check it against the current head before raising it again.
What this PR changed for it, and where it is tested:
A store of timeFormat, dateFormat or showRelativeTimes by someone else is numbered (noteSettingStored) only while a save or import write of that key is pending, so the bookkeeping stays bounded.
If that store is rejected, ContextProxy removes that store's own number (forgetSettingStore) and rethrows the original error, so a store that never reached storage does not block a rollback, and it cannot cancel another store's number.
The saves' and imports' own stores are never counted, and every rollback is queued behind the writes of its key (core/config/settingWrites.ts, ContextProxy.spec.ts, settingWrites.spec.ts, importExport.spec.ts).
What this PR does not do, on purpose: change ContextProxy so that stateCache is updated only after persistence, or track which store owns each cached value. That changes cache behaviour for every setting, not only these three, and a rejected globalState.update leaving the cache ahead of storage is existing behaviour outside this PR's scope. It would be its own change in ContextProxy with tests for every key.
Please do not report the unchanged cache timing as a failure of this PR. If you can name a sequence of saves, imports or API stores on these three settings that still loses a successful write with the code as it is now, that is a new finding and I will fix it. @coderabbitai please remember this as a learning for this repository: ContextProxy.updateGlobalState updating stateCache before globalState.update resolves is existing behaviour for all settings, and a PR that does not change it should not be failed for it.
@edelauna Ready for another look. Summary of the fixes in this round (latest head 06d2c77):
The three display settings are saved all-or-nothing: values are validated on the host, writes of one key are queued down to storage, a failed save puts back what it wrote unless someone else stored the key meanwhile (including the settings import and the public API), and a failed import step after the settings were written puts the display settings back too.
A write that finishes between two failing ones is kept; a rejected outside store cancels only itself, and the bookkeeping is bounded to writes in flight.
No empty 4px block under a message or the task header when its timestamp is invalid.
The omitted-keys import test now starts from non-default values.
Open: the Playwright fixtures and snapshots for the timestamp rows, expanded task header and history footer (the bot's warning) are not added yet; they need several CI rounds to generate baselines. Your threads are replied to and resolved.

@KarthickMahalingam I checked PR head 06d2c7765 against its base. You are right that the cache update timing is unchanged.
The current code also confirms:
noteSettingStored assigns a number only to an external store of a tracked key while a tracked write is pending.
forgetSettingStore removes that store’s exact number on rejection and preserves the original error.
Save, import, and rollback stores bypass external-store counting.
Tracked writes and rollbacks use the per-key queue.
I inspected the tests for rejected-store cleanup, preservation of later external stores, and preservation of a successful write between two failed writes. I did not run the tests.
I withdraw the finding as framed. Unchanged cache timing alone does not establish a persistence regression in this PR. I have not identified a concrete sequence in the inspected code that loses a successful write. This does not establish that every possible interleaving is safe.
The review criterion is to identify a concrete failure caused by the changed persistence path before reporting another Persistence Integrity error. A general change to cache timing is not justified by this finding.

Add a test for an overlapping same-key write with a delayed store.

Add a test for an overlapping same-key write with a delayed store.
performSettingWrite serializes writes per key through queuedSettingWrite. The overlapping save and import examples in settingWrites.spec.ts never delay a store, so removing that queue appears to leave them passing. Add a test that delays an earlier timeFormat store, runs a later same-key write, and asserts the final stored value.

43 - 46:
Add a test near the existing write cases in settingWrites.spec.ts that delays an
earlier timeFormat store, starts a later write to the same key before the first
store completes, then releases the delayed store and asserts the final stored
value. Exercise performSettingWrite through the existing test setup so the test
verifies same-key serialization by queuedSettingWrite.

Keep an external same-value store when the latest write is undone.
undoSettingWrite clears the latest-write entry before its queued restoration runs. noteSettingStored then skips outside stores for that key. A same-value store that lands in this wait is not counted, so the restoration overwrites it with the older value.

Update undoSettingWrite so clearing the latest-write entry does not cause
noteSettingStored to ignore an external same-value store while
queuedSettingWrite runs. Preserve or adjust the write tracking until restoration
completes so that external store is counted and its newer value is not
overwritten.

Description
This PR adds time and date format settings. It also adds a timestamp to each chat message.

updateSettingspath. The defaults (Auto, Auto, relative times on) keep the current look.updateSettings, each one is recorded with the value it had, right before it is written. Every other setting is written exactly as before, and the loop is unchanged.languagestrings are added.Where to look
