feat(usage): add a Usage tab with provider limits and usage history - #2225
This PR adds a Usage tab to Settings. It shows live provider limits and a usage history.
Provider limits
Two host services supply the limits: copilotQuota and providerQuotas. They cover GitHub Copilot, OpenRouter, DeepSeek, Moonshot, Kimi Code, z.ai, MiniMax, NanoGPT, and OpenCode Go.
The payload parsers are pure functions with unit tests.
A key goes only to the default host of its own provider. A profile with a custom base URL shows "not checked". A profile on the default host is preferred over a gateway profile.
Only successful results are cached (60 seconds), per provider and per key. A failed refresh removes the old entry. Callers that ask for the same key share one request.
The webview sends a request id and cancels on unmount. The host aborts the fetches when the last waiting caller leaves, and the webview ignores an answer for an older request.
Copilot uses the GitHub session that VS Code already holds. It never prompts. Unknown usage shows "Usage not reported", not "0% used".
Keys stay in the extension host. The webview gets display-ready rows only.
Usage history
The history comes from local task history. The host records per-model usage (usageByModel) in task metadata, so a later change of the active profile does not relabel old requests.
Filters: Today, 7 days, 30 days, All time, and a workspace filter. A daily chart, breakdowns by provider, model, and mode, and CSV export.
Unpriced providers show tokens and "no price", not $0.00.
The chart steps by calendar day, so it is correct across a daylight-saving change. The view and the export share one "now" that rolls over at local midnight.
CSV cells that start with =, +, -, @, tab, or carriage return get a leading apostrophe.
Review notes
The Copilot quota endpoint (copilot_internal/user) is not a public API. A failure shows a quiet status row.
This PR adds no setting, so it does not touch updateSettings.
Mutation gate:mutation-diff reports 654 changed executable lines in the extension and 749 in the webview (limit 500). Most of it is providerQuotas.ts (467), UsageSettings.tsx (394), and usage.ts (181). The parsers and the view model are pure code with their own tests. I ask a maintainer for a one-time exclusion for this PR.
Test Procedure
pnpm check-types passes in webview-ui, src, and packages/types.
Webview tests pass (178 files, 2283 tests). Extension tests for the language models, the webview handler, and task persistence pass (53 files, 1097 tests).
Playwright snapshots cover the populated, degraded, and empty states in four themes.
The DST tests run in America/New_York and assert that the fixture crosses a clock change.
Manual: open Settings > Usage. Check each state. Click Refresh. Close the tab while a request runs. Export a CSV and open it in a spreadsheet.

## Test Placement Guidance
- Use package-local unit tests for pure logic, parsing, state transitions, validation, serialization, request construction, retry decisions, and error handling.
[ERROR] 104-104: A nonliteral argument is passed to exec/execSync. Identify the receiver: Node child_process methods execute shell commands, while regular-expression and database methods have different contracts. For shell execution, prefer execFile or spawn with an argument array.
[warning] 69-69: This synchronous effect update causes an extra render: Calling setState synchronously within an effect can trigger cascading renders. Prefer deriving or initializing the value before render. If the effect must read a browser API after mount, treat this as advisory or suppress it with // react-doctor-disable-next-line react-hooks-js/set-state-in-effect.
Effects are intended to synchronize state between React and external systems such as manually updating the DOM, state management libraries, or other platform APIs. In general, the body of an effect should do one or both of the following:
Update external systems with the latest state from React.
Subscribe for updates from some external system, calling setState in a callback function when external state changes.
Added a Usage section in Settings with cost and token summaries, daily charts, task and provider/model breakdowns, and date-range and workspace filters.
Export filtered usage history to CSV.
View quota and balance information for supported providers, including GitHub Copilot, with usage windows and reset dates where available; refresh quota data on demand.
Usage history attributes requests to providers and models when available, and shows token totals when costs are unavailable.
Quota views show loading errors and provide a retry option.
Localization
Added Usage settings translations across supported languages.
This pull request records task usage by provider and model, retrieves quota data for supported providers, and adds a Usage section in Settings. The section displays quota status and filtered task-history summaries, charts, breakdowns, and CSV exports.

Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#2215 — The issue requests a Usage tab with provider limits and usage history. This pull request adds those features.
Merge Risk: Low · up to f616c
The Usage tab has bounded correctness and recovery issues: profile switches can misattribute usage, some profiles display another account’s quota, and stalled reads or external profile saves can leave limits unavailable. These warrant correction or explicit follow-up, but the evidence does not indicate broad runtime disruption or credential exposure.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #2215 is open and directly linked, so its coding requirements apply. The PR adds the Usage settings tab, provider-limit retrieval for the requested providers, Refresh handling, and local task-history reporting with range/workspace filters, daily data, provider/model/mode breakdowns, and filtered CSV export. The host keeps API keys out of webview messages, restricts keyed requests to approved default hosts, skips custom-base-URL profiles, and uses the existing Copilot session without prompting. The implementation records provider/model usage in task metadata, distinguishes priced and unpriced usage, handles cancellation and failed-cache refreshes, and protects CSV formula cells. The changed tests cover quota parsing and lifecycle, usage persistence and aggregation, DST boundaries, CSV safety, and UI behavior. Locale files add the Usage strings for the supported locales shown in the summary.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed production files support the Usage feature in #2215. Type changes carry quota messages and persisted provider/model usage. Task changes preserve attribution for history. Quota services, webview handlers, UI components, utilities, tests, visual fixtures, and locale updates implement or validate the requested feature. The mutation-diff request is administrative and does not add product behavior. No unrelated product change is established by the available whole-PR summary.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No concrete security-boundary failure is introduced. src/services/language-models/providerQuotas.ts:397-474, 700-805 selects fixed provider-owned HTTPS endpoints and rejects malformed or custom-host profiles before sending a key. getJson sends the key only in the Authorization header to those fixed URLs (:344-350). loadProfiles keeps full profiles host-side, and webviewMessageHandler.ts:1597-1629 posts only formatted ProviderQuota rows, not credentials. safeErrorMessage removes arbitrary network error text, and the Copilot path uses a fixed api.github.com URL with generic error messages. The webview renders returned strings as React text, and CSV export escapes formula-leading fields.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The new rewind-clear path can leave stale usage in persisted history. taskMetadata emits usageByModel: undefined (taskMetadata.ts:113-117), and saveClineMessages sends it to updateTaskHistory (Task.ts:1771-1815). However, TaskHistoryStore computes the delta from its cache (TaskHistoryStore.ts:234-240; taskStoreConcurrency.ts:17-20). If one host cached a task without usageByModel and another host then persisted usage, the clearing host sees no cached change, omits the field from the delta, and the disk merge preserves the other host's usage. The Usage consumer then reads that stale breakdown from HistoryItem.usageByModel (usage.ts:218-230).
Resolution
Make an explicit usageByModel clear authoritative under the file lock. Re-read the current disk item before computing the delta, or carry an explicit deletion marker for this field so mergeHistoryDelta removes it even when the stale cache lacks the field. Update the cache with the disk result and add a two-store stale-cache test: persist usage from one store, clear it from the other after a rewind, invalidate, and verify that usageByModel is absent.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The standing regression remains. SettingsView.tsx adds the usage section, navigation entry, and renderTab === "usage" branch at lines 121, 564, and 982, but the PR does not change SettingsView.spec.tsx. That suite has no usage or Usage assertion and only covers other target sections. The unit and Playwright tests mount UsageSettings directly, so they do not verify that SettingsView exposes and renders the new tab.
Resolution
Add a focused SettingsView.spec.tsx test that renders SettingsView with targetSection="usage" or clicks the Usage tab, then asserts the Usage content or usage-filters is present. Keep the existing direct UsageSettings unit and Playwright snapshot tests.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The changed Copilot quota cancellation path still has a lifecycle leak. getGitHubToken iterates two scope sets at copilotQuota.ts:82-90, and raceAbort at :72-78 adds its abort listener without checking signal.aborted. If the first silent getSession returns no session and the last caller cancels before the second lookup starts, the second getSession runs with an already-aborted signal but its listener can never fire. The abandoned authentication lookup and fetchQuota remain pending. Cancellation clears inFlight at :184-188, so a later caller starts duplicate authentication while the abandoned lookup remains. Commit f19d08a95 removed the synchronous guard, and the current head does not restore it or add the required interleaving regression test.
Resolution
Check signal.aborted synchronously in raceAbort before adding the listener, or call signal.throwIfAborted() before each scope lookup. Add a regression test where the first scope returns undefined, cancellation occurs before the second lookup, and the second lookup never settles. Verify that the cancelled call rejects promptly and a later call starts independently.

Why one PR. The Usage tab is one feature. The limits, the history, and the per-model usage record share types (ProviderQuota, usageByModel). A split leaves a half-working tab between merges. I already split the larger first PR (#2216) into three: time/date (#2223), fonts (#2224), and this one. The other two are under the limit.
Why the size is mostly parsers.providerQuotas.ts is the payload parsers for nine providers. They are pure functions of a JSON payload. usage.ts is a pure view model. Both have their own specs, including edge cases, DST, and CSV safety. The code that touches the network is small.
What I ask for. An exclusion for this PR only, or a one-time limit bump for the two packages.
If you prefer a split. I can cut it as: (1) the extension quota services and the message, (2) the history view model and the Usage tab. That makes the second PR depend on the first.

Do not attach screenshots to the PR description as evidence; commit the baseline instead so future PRs get regression coverage automatically.

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Move the request-ID increment out of the component body so React Compiler can optimize it.
React Doctor reports that ++quotaRequestCounter on Line 48 is an update expression on a module-level variable. The compiler does not support it and skips memoization for ProviderLimits. The behavior is correct, and the module-level counter must stay. Wrap the increment in a module-scope helper.
Proposed fix
let quotaRequestCounter = 0
+const nextQuotaRequestId = () => `provider-quotas-${++quotaRequestCounter}`

121-130: Stale Copilot quota can be served after sign-out or account switch.
A previous review already raised this point, and the thread is still open. getGitHubCopilotQuota returns a cached success at Line 91, before getGitHubToken() runs at Line 96. After a sign-out or account switch, a normal call within 60 seconds returns the previous account's quota. The new failure-clearing code does not run on this path, because no fetch happens. Invalidate the cache on session change, or store the token with the cached entry and compare it before reuse. Add a regression test that caches a result, changes the session, and makes a normal call within the TTL.
No custom-base-URL fields exist for these providers.
The four provider schemas expose API keys and provider-specific settings, but no base-URL setting. The requested ownHost change and custom-gateway test do not apply.
Cover a profile switch during setup in the final-attribution tests.
Both new cases set task.apiConfiguration once, before recursivelyMakeClineRequests runs. Neither case changes the profile during the request. Task.ts binds modelId and apiProvider before the setup awaits and writes them into api_req_started. With a fixed configuration, capturing those values after the awaits gives the same payload. The tests cannot detect that change.
Add a case that calls task.updateApiConfiguration(...) after api_req_started is written and before the stream starts. Assert the finalized apiProvider and modelId, and assert which handler serves the request.

@edelauna Ready for another look. Summary of the fixes since your comments (latest head f616c70):
Cache lifetime: both specs pin the 60 s boundary with fake timers (59,999 ms cached, 60,000 ms fetched again).
Base URL guard: OpenRouter, DeepSeek and Moonshot are tested against evil.example, <host>.evil.com, user@<host>.evil.com, http://<host> and <host>:8443, with a positive case each. Passing undefined for moonshotBaseUrl now fails 5 tests.
i18n of window names: fixed names (Weekly, Daily, Monthly, Unlimited, N-hour, N-day) come from the host as a structured name and are translated in the webview in all 18 locales. Provider-formatted text ($4.25 left, 12 / 50 used, … spent this month) is still English; that needs structured amounts and is a follow-up if you want it.
Copilot 2xx without premium_interactions: now reason: "error" ("GitHub returned no premium request quota"), not noCopilot. 403 and 404 stay noCopilot.
Also from the bot's later comments: the served provider and model are recorded per request, the OpenRouter all-time usage is labelled "spent in total", the active profile is used first, all profiles unreadable is reported as a failure, progress bars have an accessible name, and a lint error in Task.ts is fixed.

Keep stale key completions out of the shared cache slot.
660-678: Minor · Performance & Scalability · Quick win
Keep stale key completions out of the shared cache slot.
quotaForKeyedProvider writes and deletes the cache slot for a provider and URL set without checking which key owns it. When a request for key A completes after key B, A's result replaces or deletes B's entry. The next check for B then fetches from the provider instead of using the 60-second cache.

Bind the recorded provider and model to the handler that serves the stream.
4157-4163: Minor · Data Integrity & Integration · Poor tradeoff
Bind the recorded provider and model to the handler that serves the stream.
At Task.ts:4157-4162, the recorded provider and configured model come from this.apiConfiguration. The served model comes from this.api.getModel(). The stream starts later at Task.ts:5945 with this.api.createMessage(...), after several awaits in attemptApiRequestWithActiveApi. A profile switch in that window replaces both this.apiConfiguration and this.api, and the request continues on the new handler. Usage from that handler is then saved on the same message, under the provider and model bound before the switch.
Take the provider, the configured model ID, and the served model ID from the same snapshot that createMessage uses. Bind them at the point where that snapshot is taken. This moves the binding into attemptApiRequestWithActiveApi, so the change spans more than the current block.

Update attemptApiRequestWithActiveApi to bind the recorded provider, configured
model ID, and served model ID from the same API/configuration snapshot used for
createMessage. Move the bindRequestToHandler call out of the earlier
message-processing block so a profile switch cannot associate usage from one
handler with another handler’s metadata.
Cover the bindRequestToHandler call in Task.ts with a Task-level test.
60-74: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Cover the bindRequestToHandler call in Task.ts with a Task-level test.
bindRequestToHandler has unit tests in usageByModel.spec.ts. No test covers its call site at src/core/task/Task.ts:4157. The provider-switch test at lines 60-74 calls only summarizeUsageByModel on pre-serialized messages, so it never reaches the Task binding.
The switch this change handles happens after the api_req_started placeholder is written and before the binding runs. That window includes the awaits at diffViewProvider.reset and safeEnsureModelFetched. A provider update through updateApiConfiguration in that window changes what the binding should record. The existing Task.spec.ts cases set the provider before the request. The placeholder keeps the pre-switch provider when the binding is absent. No inspected Task assertion would detect that.
Regression coverage for test files must sit at the lowest valid harness. For this wiring, that harness is Task.spec.ts.
Add a Task-level test in Task.spec.ts. Change apiConfiguration after the placeholder write and before the binding. Assert the persisted api_req_started provider and model.

Assert the Moonshot balance result in the own-host test.
739-745: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Assert the Moonshot balance result in the own-host test.
The own-host it.each discards the getProviderQuotas result. It asserts only the fetch call and the URL prefix. The test-file rules require a return-value assertion when a test checks only mock calls. The shared okFetch mock returns an OpenRouter-shaped payload, so this block does not check Moonshot's balance parsing or result. parseMoonshotBalance has direct unit tests, but no test through getProviderQuotas checks a successful Moonshot balance. A regression in how Moonshot's result is produced or returned by getProviderQuotas can pass the suite.

Guard non-object JSON before reading token fields.
JSON.parse on a stored api_req_started text of "null" returns null. The token-field read after the parse sits outside the try block, so it throws. That rejection stops taskMetadata before it updates the history item, so the task's history metadata stops updating while the message remains stored.

Abort pending quota requests when the provider is disposed.
ClineProvider.dispose() does not abort the controllers stored in pendingProviderQuotaRequests. A quota request that is in flight when the view is disposed keeps running. Its HTTP fetches continue until the request timeout. Expose a helper from webviewMessageHandler.ts that aborts all controllers for a provider, and call it from ClineProvider.dispose().
Based on learnings: "Lifecycle resource cleanup: Fail only when a concrete changed lifecycle path can leak a listener, watcher, provider, timer, task, or other resource, or can duplicate work after cancellation, disposal, or restart." Return the 5-hour window only when it has data.
The MiniMax parser always adds the 5-hour window, even when the selected row has no usage counters and no reset time. fetchKeyed treats any nonempty window list as success and caches it for 60 seconds, so the tab shows a label with no value. Add the window only when usedPercent or resetAt is defined, and return undefined when no window remains.
- return windows+ return windows.length ? windows : undefined
The test at src/services/language-models/__tests__/providerQuotas.spec.ts:352-353 expects the empty 5-hour window. Update that expectation to undefined with this change.

In the MiniMax parser, add the 5-hour window only when its usedPercent or

the corresponding test expectation so a row with no usage counters or reset time
expects undefined.

Pass the active profile into credential selection before the key and host ranking.
pickCredentials removes keyless profiles and prefers a default-host profile over a custom-gateway profile. It does not know which profile is active, so it can select another account for the active provider. This affects two cases:
The active OpenRouter profile has no key, and another OpenRouter profile has one. The sibling's key and host are queried, and its spend fills the single OpenRouter row. The noKey result is never produced.
The active DeepSeek profile uses a custom gateway and has a key, and a keyed DeepSeek profile on the default host exists. The default-host profile wins the ranking, so its account is queried. The unsupported result is never produced.
When the active profile belongs to the provider, use its credentials without the key filter or the host ranking. The existing unqueryable check then returns noKey for a keyless profile and unsupported for a custom-gateway profile. Keep the current ranking for providers that are not active.
The active profile is not identifiable inside pickCredentials today. loadProfiles lists the active profile first, but the loaded profiles do not carry the list name. List position is not a safe signal. The active profile is dropped when it fails to load, and no active name exists when none is configured. Pass the active profile identity from the handler through getProviderQuotas into pickCredentials.

Pass the active profile identity from the handler through getProviderQuotas to
pickCredentials; do not infer it from profile order. In pickCredentials, use the
active profile’s credentials directly when it belongs to the requested provider,
before key filtering or host ranking, so the existing unqueryable check can
report noKey or unsupported. Preserve the current credential ranking for
providers that are not active.

Add a deadline to the profile loading in loadProfiles.
loadProfiles waits for all getProfile calls through Promise.all. A secret-storage read that never settles leaves the request unanswered, so Provider limits stays loading and Refresh stays disabled. Add a deadline so completed profile reads still produce a response.

Re-request provider limits when the webview regains focus.
ProviderLimits requests quotas only on mount, and a profile saved in another webview does not change this webview's state. Subscribing to the saved profile list will not fire for that save. When the first response is empty, the section returns null and the Refresh control disappears, so the limits stay hidden until the Usage tab remounts. Request quotas again when the window gains focus, and remove the listener on cleanup.

Update ProviderLimits to request quotas again when the webview regains focus, so
it can pick up profiles saved elsewhere. Remove the focus listener during effect
cleanup, alongside the existing message listener cleanup.
