DeepSeek reports prompt-cache usage in a shape our provider code did not read. DeepSeekHandler.processUsageMetrics read cache write tokens from usage.prompt_tokens_details.cache_miss_tokens, a field that does not exist in DeepSeek's OpenAPI schema. cacheWriteTokens was therefore permanently undefined.
Because DeepSeek catalog entries set inputPrice: 0 (inputs are priced as cache read/write only), calculateApiCostOpenAI computed nonCachedInput = prompt_tokens - 0 - reads and priced it at zero. Every cache-miss input token billed at $0.
This PR fixes the read, rewrites the unit spec to the documented wire shape, and extracts the normalization into a shared helper so the family-wide provider rewiring can adopt it without a second implementation.
Documented wire shape
DeepSeek's CompletionUsage schema marks six members required:
required: ["prompt_tokens", "prompt_tokens_details", "prompt_cache_hit_tokens",
"prompt_cache_miss_tokens", "completion_tokens", "total_tokens"]
prompt_tokens_details: { cached_tokens?: int } <- ONLY this member
The old spec mocked prompt_tokens_details: { cache_miss_tokens: 8, cached_tokens: 2 } and asserted cacheWriteTokens === 8 from it. The suite was green because it mocked a shape the vendor never emits.
Non-additive semantics (the important part)
The nested and top-level shapes describe the same quantities. A response can carry both. The helper resolves one value per field through an ordered alias list and stops at the first numeric value. It never sums: adding both shapes would report 200 reads / 40 writes for a response that actually had 100 / 20, doubling billed cache tokens.
The top-level miss counter is the documented, required DeepSeek member. Nested cache_miss_tokens is not in the schema; kept last as a legacy/proxy fallback.
Nested cached_tokens is documented and required for both DeepSeek and OpenAI, and live responses still carry it (vercel/ai#19789). The top-level hit counter covers responses that omit the nested object.
Note the write ordering is deliberately the reverse of the read ordering. Putting the nested write field first would preserve the bug, because it never resolves on the live API.

No changes to openai.ts, base-openai-compatible-provider.ts, or any other provider. Family-wide rewiring is a separate unit that will consume this helper. No changeset, no CHANGELOG (per repo AGENTS.md).
Input is generic OpenAI-shaped usage with unknown fields, so any chat-completions provider can pass its raw usage object without a cast. Unreported cache counters stay absent (not 0), preserving the "no counter" vs "zero hits" distinction cost reporting needs. Only non-negative integers are accepted per alias; a malformed value falls through to the next alias instead of poisoning the total.
Fail-on-base
Run against the origin/maindeepseek.ts blob with the new spec in place. All three die on the pre-fix code:
DeepSeekHandler > createMessage > should include cache metrics in usage information — AssertionError: expected undefined to be 8
DeepSeekHandler > processUsageMetrics > reads the documented top-level cache counters — AssertionError: expected undefined to be 7
DeepSeekHandler > processUsageMetrics > reads top-level cache counters when prompt_tokens_details is absent — AssertionError: expected undefined to be 80
Mutation matrix
Each row neutralizes one alias arm in the helper, then re-runs both suites.
createMessage cache metrics; does not double-count; does not add both shapes; prefers nested reads; prefers top-level writes

Every arm is load-bearing. The additive (double-count) implementation is rejected by five tests.
Stryker over the changed selectors: 56 mutants, 49 killed, 7 survived, score 87.50%. The 7 survivors are equivalent mutants (defensive ?? 0 / ?. on fields the helper always populates, plus three equivalent conditionals inside the same validator). A real gap found during this pass (the untested typeof usage !== "object" guard) was closed with a new test and the commit amended.
The one full-suite failure is pre-existing and unrelated: mistral.spec.ts > completePrompt > keeps TimeoutError when the timeout fires before a later caller abort. That test was introduced by origin/main's tip commit 159c42e15 (#1303), which is this branch's base. It is deterministic here (three consecutive isolated runs each fail), and none of mistral.ts's dependencies differ from origin/main in this PR.
Also verified: pnpm --dir src run check-types clean; ESLint clean with zero suppression-count changes for every touched file; no as any in new code; no floating promises; no zero-byte files; no conflict markers; no CRLF churn (the --prune-suppressions CRLF rewrite of eslint-suppressions.json was detected and reverted, never staged).
Mutation budget from committed blobs: 45 / 500 changed executable lines (node scripts/stryker-diff.mjs ci --base <sha> --head <sha>).
What:
- Add src/api/transform/chat-usage-normalization.ts, a shared normalizer that
resolves OpenAI-shaped chat-completions usage into
{ inputTokens, outputTokens, cacheReadTokens, cacheWriteTokens }.
- DeepSeekHandler.processUsageMetrics now uses the normalizer instead of
reading usage.prompt_tokens_details.cache_miss_tokens directly.
- Rewrite the deepseek spec fixtures to DeepSeek's documented wire shape and
add top-level-only, nested-only-legacy, and both-shapes-present cases.
Why:
DeepSeek's OpenAPI marks prompt_cache_hit_tokens and prompt_cache_miss_tokens
as required top-level members and declares only cached_tokens inside
prompt_tokens_details. The nested cache_miss_tokens field the provider read
does not exist, so cacheWriteTokens was permanently undefined. DeepSeek
catalog entries set inputPrice: 0 (inputs are priced as cache read/write
only), so calculateApiCostOpenAI priced every cache-miss input token at zero:
a permanent, near-total under-report of DeepSeek input cost.
The old spec hid this by mocking the non-existent nested shape and asserting
cacheWriteTokens from it, so the suite was green because it mocked the bug.
Read priority is per-field with no summing, because the two shapes describe
the same quantities:
- cacheWriteTokens: prompt_cache_miss_tokens, then nested cache_miss_tokens
(legacy fallback), then nested cache_write_tokens.
- cacheReadTokens: nested cached_tokens, then prompt_cache_hit_tokens, then
cache_read_input_tokens.
Impact:
DeepSeek input cost is now reported instead of collapsing to ~$0 for
cache-miss tokens. The helper is generic over OpenAI-shaped usage so the
family-wide provider rewiring can adopt it without a second implementation.
No behavior change for providers that do not use the helper.

Improved DeepSeek usage reporting to recognize its documented prompt-cache counters and display cache reads and writes more consistently.
Usage totals now handle missing or invalid token counts more reliably, and cache counts from multiple formats are not double-counted. When cache metrics are unavailable, they remain unreported rather than appearing as zero.
DeepSeek usage processing now normalizes prompt, completion, and cache token counts before emitting metrics. The normalizer supports top-level and nested cache counters, validates counts, and defaults missing prompt and completion counts to zero.
Adds normalization for prompt and completion counts and ordered aliases for cache reads and writes. Tests cover supported counter shapes, fallback rules, invalid values, and missing counts.
DeepSeek usage processing uses the normalizer to emit token and cache counts. Fixtures and tests cover top-level counters, legacy nested counters, and missing cache metrics.

Explanation
Focused regression coverage is present. DeepSeekHandler.processUsageMetrics now uses normalizeChatUsage, and deepseek.spec.ts covers documented top-level counters, top-level-only data, legacy nested data, both shapes without double-counting, missing cache data, and streaming usage. The normalizer unit tests cover missing and malformed usage, alias precedence and fallback, zero values, malformed counters, negative and fractional counters, and missing token defaults. The pull request changes no visible UI, so no Playwright snapshot is required.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path meets a security failure condition. src/api/transform/chat-usage-normalization.ts reads only fixed usage aliases and validates that token values are non-negative integers; it does not execute input or expose secrets or PII. src/api/providers/deepseek.ts emits only normalized usage counters. The changes add no approval, authorization, or allowlist bypass.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence path exists. The PR changes DeepSeek usage parsing and an in-memory normalization helper, then emits an ApiStreamUsageChunk. The reviewed diff contains no persistence write, storage/database operation, rollback path, or persisted-default propagation that could lose or corrupt state.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
No changed lifecycle resource path exists. The pull request changes DeepSeek usage normalization and adds pure normalization tests. DeepSeekHandler.createMessage retains its existing stream iteration and usage emission flow; the new normalizeChatUsage function performs only synchronous object and counter reads. No listener, watcher, provider, timer, task, or cancellation/disposal path was added or changed.

Add a nested-zero case to the read-precedence tests.
The read-precedence test uses cached_tokens: 100 with prompt_cache_hit_tokens: 90. A zero nested count is a valid stop value for the resolver, but no test covers it with a nonzero top-level fallback. A regression that skips a nested 0 would still pass the suite. The test-file guidance requires boundary coverage for regression evidence, so add a case for this input.
