feat(server): forward images and model chat-template kwargs to OpenAI-compatible upstream chat - #866
An OpenAI-compatible upstream chat endpoint (for example a vLLM or SGLang OpenAI server) that serves an onboarded vision model now receives the message images and the model's chat-template kwargs.
Behaviour
Images. For a model that declares inputs.image: true, upstream chat sends message images as OpenAI image_url content parts with base64 data URIs. This covers:
a remote-backed model, on queued and single-node serving;
a model with local weights served by an openai upstream, on queued serving.
Image and text parts keep the order the local chat template renders: the ordered content_parts layout when present, otherwise images first. A bare-string or input_image part from a direct caller is normalized to {"type": "image_url", "image_url": {"url": ...}}. Invalid image bytes are refused as invalid_request. Video is still refused. Admission reserves the existing per-image token estimate instead of counting the base64 characters.
Chat-template kwargs. Queued upstream chat for a model with local weights served by an openai upstream sends the model's configured tasks.generate.chat_template_kwargs as top-level chat_template_kwargs. Without this, a model configured with {enable_thinking: false} was rendered with the upstream's default template, so the upstream ran a different prompt from the one the worker counted. Request-level chat_template_kwargs are still refused. Remote-backed models send none. Single-node chat already merged and forwarded these kwargs and is unchanged.
Counting images for a model with local weights. The worker counts the prompt from the model's own chat-template render, as it already does for text. For images, the image part of the count is the upstream's reported usage.prompt_tokens_details.image_tokens, because the image processing bounds are the upstream's:
The rendered placeholder tokens of the model config's image_token_id are left out of the render count, so they are not counted twice. Wrapper tokens such as <|vision_start|> and <|vision_end|> stay counted.
A final usage without a valid image_tokens (a non-negative integer no larger than prompt_tokens) fails the request, as missing usage already does.
A model whose config declares no image token, or whose render carries none, is refused before dispatch.
The upstream's own counts stay in usage.upstream_usage. Completion counting is unchanged.
The upstream chat usage parser keeps a valid prompt_tokens_details.image_tokens next to cached_tokens.
The data-URI encoding the SGLang adapter used for image_data moves to sie_server.types.inputs.image_data_uri, so both callers share it.
REMOTE_BACKENDS.md documents the new behaviour.
Tests
tests/processors/test_remote_chat.py (SIE and OpenAI upstreams):
inline, gateway-forwarded and image-first images reach the upstream in order as data URIs;
images are refused without declared image input, and video is refused;
admission reserves images per image;
a remote-backed model sends no kwargs.
tests/processors/test_hybrid_usage.py:
model kwargs reach both the upstream body and the worker's counting render, and request kwargs are refused;
an image prompt counts as the render without its pad token plus the upstream's image_tokens, streaming and buffered (the rule is documented in the test);
a missing or invalid image_tokens fails exactly as missing usage does;
an unknown or unrendered image token is refused before dispatch;
a remote-backed image prompt reports the upstream's figure;
the image token is read from the model config.
tests/api/test_remote_chat.py: single-node remote-backed chat forwards normalized image parts, and refuses them without declared image input.
Chat supports images for compatible remote-backed models and queued locally weighted models served through an OpenAI-compatible upstream. Images are sent alongside text in their original order.
Queued image requests use upstream-reported image-token usage for token counts and request limits.
Configured chat-template options are applied to queued requests for locally weighted models served through an OpenAI-compatible upstream.
Bug Fixes
Unsupported, invalid, or uncountable image requests are rejected before dispatch. Video remains unsupported for remote chat.
Documentation
Updated chat documentation to describe image support and limitations.
Input validation (added after review)
Forwarded images are decoded before dispatch on both the queued and the single-node paths. An image that does not decode is refused with invalid_request on its own field and is never sent upstream.
For a counted image request, text whose tokens already include the model's image token (in messages, tool calls or tool definitions) is refused before dispatch, so it cannot change the image part of the count.
All refusal checks run before any image is encoded, and image requests encode on the bounded grammar executor, not on the event loop.
…-compatible upstream chat
Upstream chat now sends a remote-backed vision model's message images as
base64 data-URI image_url parts, in the order the local chat template
renders them, on queued and single-node serving. Video stays refused.
Queued upstream chat for a model with local weights served by an
OpenAI-compatible upstream sends the model's configured
tasks.generate.chat_template_kwargs as top-level chat_template_kwargs, so
the upstream renders the same template the worker counts the prompt with.
Request-level kwargs stay refused, and remote-backed models send none.
Such a counted model still refuses images before dispatch: the worker
has no count of the visual tokens an upstream makes of an image.

Walkthrough
Queued chat now supports images when the model declares image input. The request path validates and normalizes image content, forwards supported images, and estimates image admission separately from text. Counted OpenAI requests use upstream image-token counts in hybrid prompt usage.

Terminal chunks carry validated upstream image-token counts. Hybrid usage adds those counts to the locally rendered prompt count after excluding image placeholders. Requests are rejected when required image-token counting information is unavailable.

Explanation
The title names the main change: forwarding images and model-configured chat-template kwargs to OpenAI-compatible upstream chat. The raw summary and objectives confirm the changeset does this, including image_url data-URI parts in remote chat, chat_template_kwargs for locally weighted queued models served by an OpenAI upstream, and image-token counting in hybrid usage. The title is a single, specific sentence in conventional-commit form. It omits the image-token usage accounting and the SGLang encoding refactor, which is expected for a title.

A model with local weights served by an OpenAI-compatible upstream, whose
config declares inputs.image, now forwards message images to upstream chat
like a remote-backed model does.
The worker still counts the prompt from the model's own chat-template
render. For images, the placeholder tokens of the model config's
image_token_id are left out of that render count and the upstream's
reported usage.prompt_tokens_details.image_tokens takes their place,
because the image processing bounds are the upstream's. Wrapper tokens
around a placeholder stay counted. A final usage without a valid
image_tokens figure fails the request as missing usage does. A model whose
config declares no image token, or whose render carries none, is refused
before dispatch. Admission keeps the per-image reservation, and the
upstream's own counts stay in usage.upstream_usage.

…am chat
Upstream chat now decodes every forwarded image off the event loop before
dispatch and refuses one that does not decode as invalid_request, on the
queued and single-node paths.
The counted prompt for an image request leaves out the model's image
placeholder tokens. A request whose own text already encodes to that token
would be undercounted, so the worker renders the request once more without
its images and refuses it when that render carries the image token. A
template may still emit several placeholders per image.

Every upstream chat refusal now runs before any image is touched. The
queued worker then decodes and base64-encodes the forwarded images in one
pass on its bounded executor, so an undecodable image is refused before
any data URI is built and the event loop never encodes image bytes.
