Problem

A remote-backed model (remote_backed: true) served through an OpenAI-compatible upstream that declares only the chat endpoint refuses every queued native /v1/generate request that carries a text prompt:

  • The gateway publishes a text-only native prompt to the worker as a prompt input.
  • The worker's remote-chat path only handles messages input, so the prompt goes to OpenAIUpstreamAdapter.preflight_generate.
  • That refuses a grammar with unsupported_field and, without one, refuses because the upstream does not declare completions.

A native prompt that carries images already works, because the gateway publishes it as one user message (test_generate_params_from_json_maps_native_images_to_worker_messages).

Change

  • Gateway (queue/publisher.rs, handlers/proxy.rs): the native /v1/generate route sets native_prompt: Some(true) on its generate work item, for both JSON and msgpack bodies. Chat, completions and every other route leave it absent. The field is optional on the wire.
  • Worker (processors/streaming.py): a prompt input with native_prompt set, for a remote-backed model whose OpenAI-compatible upstream does not declare completions, becomes one user message. It then takes the existing remote-chat path:
    • a JSON Schema grammar reaches the upstream as response_format;
    • a regex grammar is still refused before dispatch;
    • usage, streaming and settlement are unchanged.
  • A /v1/completions prompt is a raw continuation, so on a chat-only upstream it is still refused with unsupported_field. Upstreams that declare completions, SIE upstreams and models with local weights keep their current paths.
  • A grammar label is forwarded as json_schema.name only when it matches [A-Za-z0-9_-]{1,64}; other labels use response.
  • Mixed versions keep the previous behaviour: an older worker ignores the new field and an older gateway never sets it.

Tests

  • Gateway: test_only_the_native_route_marks_its_prompt_native checks that native JSON and msgpack bodies set native_prompt and that completions and chat do not. cargo test -p sie-gateway --lib: 1845 passed.
  • Worker: test_native_prompt_on_a_chat_only_upstream_is_one_user_turn drives the real StreamingProcessor and adapter against a mock upstream transport, with no grammar, a valid label, a label with a space and a 65-character label. It asserts one /chat/completions request with messages: [{"role": "user", "content": "question"}] and the expected response_format, and that output and usage reach the queue. It fails on main.
  • Worker: test_raw_prompt_on_a_chat_only_upstream_is_refused_without_dispatch checks that a prompt without native_prompt sends nothing upstream and ends with unsupported_field.
  • packages/sie_server/tests/processors/, adapters/test_remote_openai_generation.py, adapters/test_remote_fallback.py and api/test_remote_chat.py: 1579 passed.
  • ruff check, ruff format --check and cargo fmt --check pass. Local cargo clippy (cargo 1.95) reports nonminimal_bool only on lines this PR does not touch.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed native generation requests being rejected by remote models that support chat completions but not raw completions. Prompts now reach the chat endpoint as a user message, with streamed responses, usage details, and finish results preserved.
    • JSON Schema formatting now uses a safe default name when a supplied label does not meet the accepted format.
    • Invalid values for the native prompt option are rejected.

…ne user turn

A remote-backed model whose OpenAI-compatible upstream declares only the chat
endpoint refused every queued native /v1/generate request that carried a text
prompt: the worker took the raw-completions path, which needs a completions
endpoint and cannot forward a grammar. The gateway already sends a native
prompt with images as one user message, so the worker now does the same for a
text prompt on such a model, and a JSON Schema grammar reaches the upstream as
response_format. Upstreams that declare completions keep the raw path.

Walkthrough

Native /v1/generate requests now carry a native_prompt flag. For eligible remote-backed OpenAI chat-only upstreams, the streaming processor converts prompt input to one user message. Schema labels that do not meet the accepted name pattern use "response".

Changes: Native prompt routing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Native prompt flag and request validation
packages/sie_gateway/src/queue/publisher.rs, packages/sie_gateway/src/handlers/proxy.rs, packages/sie_server/src/sie_server/processors/streaming.py
The gateway sets native_prompt for JSON and MessagePack /v1/generate requests. Other routes leave it unset. The processor validates the flag and defaults an omitted value to false.
Chat-only prompt conversion and dispatch
packages/sie_server/src/sie_server/processors/streaming.py, packages/sie_server/tests/processors/test_remote_chat.py
The processor converts eligible prompt input to one user message. It uses "response" when a JSON Schema label does not match the accepted pattern. Tests cover chat dispatch, streamed results, and refusal of raw prompts.

Native generate prompts on chat-only upstreams now work instead of being refused. Slow non-streaming answers may exceed the first-chunk timeout and fail or retry. This is a bounded, known limitation that can be followed up separately.

…ams as a user turn

The native /v1/generate route now sets native_prompt on its generate work
item, and the worker converts a prompt to one user message only when it is
set. A /v1/completions prompt, a raw continuation, is still refused on a
chat-only upstream. The field is optional, so mixed gateway and worker
versions keep the previous behaviour.

A grammar label is forwarded as the upstream json_schema name only when it
matches [A-Za-z0-9_-]{1,64}; other labels use "response".
