The /voice demo now shows the moq.pro cat, in the "Chalk boil" style picked from the mockup, mouthing the agent's reply. It replaces the placeholder robot header on /voice. ai.svg stays for the /demo card.

How it works

  • Audio tap: <moq-watch> exposes its decoded audio as el.audio.out.root, the decoder's AudioWorkletNode. The player's own GainNode hangs off that node. The cat hangs a second branch off it, an AnalyserNode with nothing downstream, so playback is untouched. It reads the reply before volume, so a muted player still lip-syncs. The analyser is disconnected when the node changes or the call ends.
  • Mouth picker (src/components/voice/mouth.ts, unit-tested): openness comes from RMS, eased with a fast attack and a slower release. Roundness comes from the spectral centroid compared with the voice's own running average: darker than usual rounds the mouth, brighter widens it. The mouth swaps on twos (83 ms), the boil reseeds every 125 ms, and the cat blinks every 2 to 6 s. With no session or silence, the cat holds rest and blinks.
  • Fix to the mockup's math: the mockup took the centroid from getByteFrequencyData. Those bytes are dB-scaled, so faint high bins count nearly as much as the loud ones and every sound reads bright. This uses getFloatFrequencyData converted to linear magnitude. A test covers it.
  • Reduced motion: no boil, read every frame so a mid-call change applies. Lip sync and blinks stay, since they are small swaps rather than motion.

Mouth files

Five SVG files, public/voice/mouth/{rest,slit,small-o,big-d,big-o}.svg. Each uses one shared 200x120 viewBox, and point (100,50) is the mouth's center. The box sits at (108,265) in the cat's 420x420 favicon box, just under the eyes. Draw on transparent. The boil filter distorts the mouth along with the cat. Each file carries a one-line comment with that contract, and cat.tsx has the full version. The files ship as placeholders ported from the mockup's chalk shapes. The mockup's o/O names became small-o/big-o because those two collide on a case-insensitive checkout (macOS).

Verified

  • just check and just test pass.
  • In just dev I used a temporary harness, since removed, to feed the cat synthesized tones and an espeak-ng speech clip through the same AnalyserNode path. Over about 11 s of speech it showed rest 48, slit 25, big-d 24, big-o 35, small-o 1 frames, and a blink. /voice renders the idle cat at desktop and phone widths.

Manual check (needs a human)

  • Start a real session on /voice and watch the cat mouth the agent's reply. Check that it stops on barge-in, and that it rests when the call ends.
  • Tune by ear if needed: the 0.9 roundness threshold and the open thresholds (0.08 and 0.35) in mouth.ts.

The voice demo now shows the moq.pro cat, drawn in chalk with a boiling
outline, mouthing the agent's reply. It taps @moq/watch's decoded audio
node with a side-branch AnalyserNode and picks one of five mouths on twos
from loudness and brightness. The mouths are separate SVG files under
public/voice/mouth/ so they can be redrawn by hand.

Walkthrough

The voice demo passes the watch element’s decoded audio output to a new animated cat component. The component uses audio level and spectral brightness to select mouth shapes, and it also animates blinking and the outline. Tests cover mouth selection, smoothing, audio measurements, and mouth asset presence. The voice page no longer displays the centered Voice AI image.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to def4a

The cat animation works as intended in normal use. Two small edge cases remain: an old audio branch can stay connected if the audio node is replaced, and a reduced-motion setting changed while the page is open is not applied until reload. Both are safe to follow up on after merge.

Disconnect the analyser when the voice node changes, so a replaced
node never keeps a stale branch. Read prefers-reduced-motion every
frame, so a preference changed mid-call stops or starts the boil.

Merging at c591821.

  • Review: Codex passed def4ae2 with no findings. CodeRabbit raised two minor findings, both fixed in c591821: the analyser is now disconnected when the voice node changes or the call ends, and reduced motion is read every frame so a mid-call change applies. CodeRabbit confirmed both.
  • Gates: just check and just test pass on the clean head (32 tests). In just dev, /voice renders the cat with the boil running.
  • Not run: a real voice session. The manual checklist above stays open; the maintainer chose to merge without it.
