Implements the API agreed in discussion #666:

public fun PlatformFile.walk(maxDepth: Int = Int.MAX_VALUE): Sequence<PlatformFile>
public suspend fun PlatformFile.sizeRecursively(): Long
  • walk() is lazy and depth-first. It doesn't yield the starting directory. On a regular file or a symbolic link it yields just that entry, as stdlib Path.walk() does. maxDepth must be positive, matching FileTreeWalk.maxDepth(). Errors throw, like list().
  • Symbolic links are yielded but never followed, including a link passed as the receiver (as in delete(recursively = true) and stdlib Path.walk()). They count as 0 in sizeRecursively(), so a link to a file outside the tree isn't counted.
  • sizeRecursively() runs on Dispatchers.IO (not on web) and counts unknown sizes as 0. On Apple it holds security-scoped access on the root once for the whole computation. size() is unchanged.
  • Both live in commonMain. Link detection is split out of each deleteIfSymbolicLink() into an internal expect fun PlatformFile.isSymbolicLink() (web returns false). delete() behavior is unchanged.
  • Each child is checked for a link before isDirectory(), so a link's target is never read, not even its metadata. On Android SAF the link check is a constant false, so it adds no provider query.
  • Docs: new "Walking a directory tree" section in docs/core/platform-file.mdx.

Platforms: all. Android content:// trees, Apple, JVM, Linux and mingw, plus web directories picked with the directory picker. OPFS directories throw, as list() already does for them.

Windows: OneDrive "Files On-Demand" folders

Existing link detection (JVM and mingw) treats every FILE_ATTRIBUTE_REPARSE_POINT entry as a link. OneDrive Files On-Demand folders are reparse points (cloud tags IO_REPARSE_TAG_CLOUD_*). Windows exposes that attribute to most processes by default (PHCM_EXPOSE_PLACEHOLDERS; see RtlSetProcessPlaceholderCompatibilityMode). Go hit the same bug in golang/go#22579.

As a result, walk() yields such a folder without descending into it, and sizeRecursively() counts it as 0. delete(recursively = true) already has the same blind spot: it calls RemoveDirectoryW on the folder rather than emptying it first.

Not fixed here (follow-up): the fix is to read the reparse tag (FindFirstFileW → dwReserved0) and treat only name-surrogate tags (IsReparseTagNameSurrogate: symlinks and junctions) as links. That changes delete() on Windows, since cloud folders would then be recursed into. I can't verify it without a OneDrive machine, so it should be its own PR.

Validation

Run locally, sequentially, with --max-workers=1:

  • :filekit-core:jvmTest: PlatformFileTraversalTest, PlatformFileJvmTest (including the link-cycle regression), PlatformFileDeletionTest, PlatformFileNonWebTest
  • :filekit-core:testAndroidHostTest: PlatformFileTraversalTest, PlatformFileAndroidTest (SAF walk; unknown size counts as 0), PlatformFileDeletionTest
  • :filekit-core:macosArm64Test: PlatformFileTraversalTest, PlatformFileDeletionTest
  • :filekit-core:wasmJsBrowserTest: PlatformFileWebTest
  • :filekit-core:compileKotlinLinuxX64, :filekit-core:compileKotlinMingwX64
  • ktlint: clean

Left to CI: the full multiplatform test matrix, including Windows, Linux, iOS and JS.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds PlatformFile.walk() for lazy depth-first traversal and sizeRecursively() for recursive file-size calculation. Platform implementations provide symbolic-link checks and recursive-size entry points. Tests and documentation cover traversal, size calculation, symbolic-link handling, and platform constraints.

Changes: PlatformFile traversal and size

Layer / File(s) Summary
Traversal core and symbolic-link checks
filekit-core/src/commonMain/.../PlatformFile.kt
Adds lazy depth-first traversal with a positive maxDepth, and shared recursive-size calculation. A regular-file or symbolic-link root yields only itself. Traversal does not follow symbolic links.
Platform size wiring
filekit-core/src/{androidMain,appleMain,jvmMain,linuxMain,mingwX64Main,nonWebMain,webMain}/.../PlatformFile.*.kt
Adds platform-specific symbolic-link checks and recursive-size entry points. Existing deleteIfSymbolicLink() implementations delegate link detection to those checks.
Traversal and size validation
filekit-core/src/{nonWebTest,androidHostTest,jvmTest,webTest}/.../PlatformFile*Test.kt, docs/core/platform-file.mdx
Adds tests for traversal order, depth limits, symbolic links, and recursive sizes. Documents API behavior and platform constraints.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Change: Feature

Suggested reviewers: timo-drick

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 0c42c

The previously identified traversal and documentation concerns are addressed. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0c42c

The new APIs use existing platform access mechanisms, and no introduced security defect is established. Security-sensitive callers should nevertheless distinguish link exclusion from race-free filesystem confinement and retain scoped access throughout lazy walking on Apple platforms.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The immediate exposure is filesystem or provider enumeration and size metadata available through the caller's existing authority. Android URI enumeration remains provider-backed, and web enumeration uses existing directory children. The traced paths do not introduce credentials, privilege elevation, or a network sink.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — Link-first checks enforce exclusion for static entries, but separate classification and listing operations do not establish race-free containment against an actor able to replace filesystem entries concurrently. No supplied consumer establishes that these APIs are used as an adversarial confinement boundary.
  • observed — Apple link classification reads attributes without internally acquiring scoped access, whereas list() acquires access for its operation. The documented outer scope covers classification during walk(). Whether omitting that precondition can cause link misclassification is unresolved; no Apple runtime evidence verifies such a bypass.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Scoped-access cleanup runs in finally when sizing returns or throws. The existing Apple lease locks start, stop, and release transitions, counts successful accesses, and retains its native URL until active accesses drain. Lazy walking acquires no long-lived internal scope, so abandoning its sequence does not strand an internally owned access grant.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — For security-sensitive consumers, explicitly distinguish static link exclusion from confinement under concurrent mutation. A stronger confinement guarantee would require platform-specific handle-relative, non-following operations rather than only additional path checks.

walk() lazily yields a directory tree depth-first, without the starting
directory, and never follows symbolic links. sizeRecursively() sums the
regular files in the tree on Dispatchers.IO and counts unknown sizes as 0.

Link detection moves out of deleteIfSymbolicLink() into an internal
isSymbolicLink() so traversal reuses it. Delete behavior is unchanged.

Hi @vinceglb, the #673 did not fit well with what we agree in #666?

Hi @N7ghtm4r3, sorry, you should have heard this from me before you saw this PR merged. I've replied in detail on #673. Short answer: the core API matched #666, but the PR went well beyond it, so I wrote a smaller version myself. Thanks again for the idea!
