Block Reboot, Shutdown and array Stop while a long-running job is active - #2809
Note for reviewers: this is a proof of concept. It shows that the problem is real, reproducible and fixable with a small change; refining the code is welcome, and the automated review findings have been addressed. The more useful discussion, though, is why these shutdown problems have gone unaddressed for years despite repeated reports from users (see Background below), and how Unraid would prefer to resolve them, with this approach or a better one. In particular:
the damage an unclean shutdown causes: a forced parity check that runs for a day or more once the largest disk is 14 TB or larger (figures below), and the risk to pools and files that were busy at the time;
the uncertainty it leaves users with, who are unsure whether their data is safe and hesitant to reboot or stop the array;
growing data volumes: mover runs, scrubs and balances take longer as disks and pools grow, so the chance that one is running at shutdown keeps rising;
a fixed shutdown time-out that is the same for every system and every running job, which cannot cover a file copy or a scrub whose duration scales with data size, and which a UPS battery cannot be stretched to fit.
Summary
Stop is disabled while a parity operation, the mover or a btrfs operation is running, but Reboot and Shutdown check nothing, and a running ZFS scrub (state 4 of the mymonitor channel) is handled by no button. A Reboot started during a btrfs scrub or balance, or while the mover is copying a file, runs into the same shutdown time-out the disabled Stop is meant to avoid: the share or pool cannot be unmounted, rc.local_shutdown logs Forcing shutdown... after the time-out, and for scrub/balance the next boot reports unclean shutdown detected and starts a parity check.
This PR adds one list of running jobs (include/ActiveJobs.php) and a shared jobsGuard() used by every Reboot, Shutdown and Stop button on the Main and Dashboard pages. While a job runs, Reboot/Shutdown/Stop are disabled on the Main page, the job is named (per pool for btrfs and ZFS) with how to resolve it, and a deliberate "anyway" path asks for a second confirmation. The missing case '4' (ZFS scrub) is added.
Details
Current behaviour: ArrayOperation.page disables Stop for mymonitor states 1-3 only (lines 444-507; no case '4'); the Reboot/Shutdown buttons (line 978) call shutdown_now() which only shows a confirmation (and nothing at all when $confirm['down'] is off). The Dashboard has the same three actions in DashStats.page (Reboot(), Shutdown(), StopArray()) and only greys out Stop for parity/mover/btrfs.
parity_list publishes a single state number, so naming the pool needs more than that channel carries. ActiveJobs.php is read on demand and also when a button is clicked, so it does not depend on the cached state or on $confirm['down'].
Resolution texts: parity - pause or cancel in Array Operation; btrfs scrub/balance and ZFS scrub - Cancel under Scrub/Balance Status on the pool page; mover - wait. The mover has no GUI cancel, and signalling it does not help: the copy of the current file runs inside shfs and continues until the file is complete, even after SIGTERM and SIGKILL to the move helper.
Where a user can trigger these actions: Main > Array Operation (Reboot, Shutdown, Stop), Dashboard (Reboot, Shutdown, Stop icons). Not covered: a direct POST to Boot.php, emcmd cmdStop, and every non-GUI shutdown (CLI, power button, Ctrl-Alt-Del, UPS); those are handled by the companion PR.
Fail-open: if the job check cannot be fetched the old flow runs.

The GUI Stop button has been disabled while the mover or a parity operation runs since the first commit of this repository (2015) and while a btrfs operation runs since 2018; Reboot and Shutdown have never checked. The list below is what was found in public threads.
Pattern
19 reports of a shutdown, reboot or array stop timing out or ending unclean, with a workaround given, in forum and Reddit threads between 2016 and 2026 (2016: 1, 2018: 2, 2021: 3, 2022: 5, 2023: 4, 2025: 2, 2026: 2).
4 of them name a running job (mover 2016 and 2021, btrfs scrub 2025 twice). One received a reply from the account of Lime Technology; none links to a fix. A 2021 bug report on the mover case is reported by its author as unanswered after 8 months.
Workarounds: raise the shutdown time-out (10 of 19), stop the array first and time it (5), wait for or avoid the job (3), custom stop script or plugin (4).
GUI: the Reboot/Shutdown confirmation has existed since 2015 and has never checked for running jobs; Stop has covered parity and mover since 2015, btrfs since 2018, and ZFS scrub never.
Size: Seagate's reported average capacity per shipped drive was 7.3 TB (quarter ended 2022-12-30) and 13 TB (quarter ended 2025-06-27; mass-capacity 16.5 TB). A full read of a 24 TB disk takes 23.4 h at the datasheet peak rate (285 MB/s) and about 46 h at the average rate users' reports imply (about 145 MB/s); a forced parity check is therefore a day or more when the largest disk is 14 TB or larger, and under a day for 10 TB or smaller (19.5 h reported).

First commit: Stop disabled for parity/mover; Reboot/Shutdown confirmation without job check
2025-11-06, btrfs scrub not cancelled or blocking at shutdown (7.2.0); reply asks for diagnostics, nothing further: same page.
Official guidance
Docs, "Unclean shutdowns": "If you're experiencing unclean shutdowns or containers that crash during shutdown, consider increasing the general shutdown timeout to 180 seconds (or 300+ seconds if you have multiple VMs)." The page does not mention the mover, a scrub, a balance or a running parity check.
Docs: "Ensure no critical write operations are in progress before shutdown." (about the Stop Shell plugin)
Forum moderator, 2022-01-21: "Instead of shutting down or rebooting, stop the array, see how long that takes, and adjust timeout accordingly."
Errors afterwards: "116 errors" (2022-02-09), "over 1,000 parity errors" (2022-10-08); advice that a "small number of errors" is normal.
Performance: "any utilization will slow checks a lot" (Reddit, 2023-08-26); another user could not start containers during the check (2022-08-05).
Reports of damage after unclean shutdowns, causes as stated by the posters: an XFS SSD corrupted (2022-01-20); a btrfs cache pool wiped, with repeated unclean shutdowns suspected (2023-08-22, Reddit); a partial mover file on the array (2021-07-10).
Uncertainty: users ask whether it is safe, e.g. "is it still safe to shutdown" (2023-11-17), "I'm dreadful everytime I need to make a reboot" (2023-04-27); 9 such posts between 2019 and 2026. The docs page does not say whether data is at risk after an unclean shutdown.
Time-out: one fixed value, default 90 s since 2016 (control added 2016-10-04, 6.2.1); docs say array stop "typically takes 15-30 seconds" and advise raising it by hand; with a UPS: "Ensure timeouts are not longer than what your UPS can support."
Disk size: Seagate reports an average capacity per shipped drive of 7.3 TB (quarter ended 2022-12-30) and 13 TB (quarter ended 2025-06-27); a full read of a 24 TB disk is 23.4 h at the 285 MB/s datasheet peak and about 46 h at the roughly 145 MB/s average that user reports imply (10 TB: 19.5 h and 18 TB: about 36 h reported in 2021).
Why a fix in the current release line
Unraid 8 was announced on 2026-08-17 as a base-OS change, with a closed beta, open beta and release candidates still to come and no release date ("it'll ship when it's ready"). Unraid's support policy covers "the current public minor series" and "the previous public minor series"; a change merged now reaches servers through those releases.
The Stop button was disabled while a parity operation, the mover or a btrfs
operation ran, but Reboot and Shutdown checked nothing, and a ZFS scrub (state 4
of the mymonitor channel) was handled by no button. Reboot and Shutdown then
run into the same shutdown time-out as the blocked Stop and end with a forced,
unclean shutdown.
Add include/ActiveJobs.php, one list of the running jobs (parity, mover, btrfs
scrub or balance per pool, ZFS scrub per pool), and jobsGuard() in
HeadInlineJS.php which every Reboot, Shutdown and Stop button on the Main and
Dashboard pages now calls. While a job runs the buttons are disabled on the Main
page with the job named and how to resolve it; a deliberate 'anyway' path asks
for a second confirmation. Also add the missing case '4' to the mymonitor handler.

Walkthrough
The change adds an endpoint to detect active parity, mover, Btrfs, and ZFS jobs. Array and dashboard stop, reboot, and shutdown actions check that job list before proceeding. The array monitor also updates related controls and displays job information during reported activity.
