Fixes the leftover image in this forum report. Also a prevalent minor issue with current Unraid.

  • update_container finds the old image from the tag. Once the tag has moved on, the last container updated never removes it.
  • It now uses the container's own image, and removes it only if the recreate worked and no tag or container still uses it.
  • This also stops it force-removing an old image that another tag or a stopped container still uses.
  • Tested on real containers on 7.3.4, and on master with Docker 24 and 29.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • After a successful container update, the previous image is removed when it is no longer in use, helping avoid leftover images taking up storage.
    • Images that are still tagged or used by containers are preserved.

Walkthrough

The Docker update script now records the image ID used by the named container and removes the previous image only after successful recreation when that image is orphaned. DockerClient adds methods to retrieve a container's image ID and check whether an image is orphaned.

Changes

Container Image Update

Layer / File(s) Summary
Container image lookup
emhttp/plugins/dynamix.docker.manager/include/DockerClient.php
getContainerImageID($Name) returns the matching container's image ID or null. isOrphanImage($id) returns true when the image exists and has no tags or containers using it.
Update and orphan image cleanup
emhttp/plugins/dynamix.docker.manager/scripts/update_container
The script records the named container's image ID before pulling, falling back to the repository image ID. It removes the previous image only when recreation succeeds, the image IDs differ, and the previous image is orphaned.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 0be67

The change correctly cleans up old images after updating containers that share a tag. The remaining risk is a narrow race where the forced delete removes an image that another tag or a stopped container started using after the check. Using a non-force delete for this cleanup path closes it, and the risk is low.
