Add page: run command-line tools in short-lived Docker containers - #577
Note for reviewers: this is a proof of concept for a page, not a finished piece of documentation. It shows that the common NerdPack-era tools can be run safely in short-lived containers, with every command tested (see the PR description). I would welcome changes to wording, placement and scope. The more useful discussion, though, is why there has been no replacement guidance in the docs since NerdPack was retired in 2022, even though users keep asking and the answers they receive vary widely (see Background below), and how Unraid would prefer to fill that gap, with this page or another approach. In particular:
the failures people hit after upgrades: tools installed from the flash drive that stop working when the base system's libraries change, and which the user then has to diagnose alone;
the uncertainty it leaves users with: they are unsure whether adding packages is safe or supported, and some say they hesitate to upgrade because of what they installed;
a replacement that was named in the release notes (6.12.0) and has since been abandoned, with nothing newer to point to;
scope: whether the docs should say that a package manager is deliberately not provided, and recommend containers, or document a supported way to add packages.
Every command was tested on a Docker host, and the Unraid-specific parts (stock bsdtar, persistence through the go file) on an Unraid 7.3.4 test server; what remains to check is listed in the PR description.
Before Submitting This PR, Please Ensure You Have Completed The Following:
Are internal links to wiki documents using relative file links?
Yes. All internal links are relative .mdx links.
Are all new documentation files lowercase, with dash separated names?
Yes: run-command-line-tools-in-containers.mdx.
Are all assets (images, etc), located in an assets/ subfolder next to the .md/mdx files?
There are no assets in this change.
Have you checked to ensure there aren't other open Pull Requests for the same update/change?
Yes, no open PR covers this.
Is the build succeeding?
Yes: pnpm run lint:mdx passes and docusaurus build succeeds; the English build has no warnings. The translated locales report the new page's relative links as unresolved, as they do for other pages that have no translation yet.
What this adds
A new page under Using Unraid to > Run Docker containers, placed after "Managing & customizing containers".
NerdTools and NerdPack are deprecated, and un-get is archived. People who used them to get ffmpeg, mediainfo, unrar, 7z, exiftool, tcpdump and similar tools now have no documented replacement. The page shows how to run these tools with docker run --rm:
a short "why not install packages on Unraid" section, citing the Data recovery page and the un-get README;
which tools are already part of Unraid 7.3.4 (so they are not containerised) and which are not;
how to run a tool safely: bind mounts, :ro, and --user 99:100;
a table of tool, image, and example command;
a section on archives: use the bsdtar that Unraid already includes first (it reads RAR5, RAR4, solid RAR, .zip, .7z, .iso), and fall back to a small Debian image with 7zip and 7zip-rar only for password-protected or multi-volume RAR files;
two small Dockerfiles (cli-tools for mediainfo, 7z, exiftool, tcpdump, ncdu, and rar-tools);
network capture and Intel GPU (/dev/dri) options;
a "Traps and quirks" section: what goes wrong, why (with a source), and the fix;
the difference between --rm and a kept container, with a decision table;
shell functions, persistence through /boot/config/go, and use from the User Scripts plugin.
How it was tested
Every command on the page was run with Docker 29.1.3 on an x86_64 Linux machine, against small generated test files (video, RAR, 7z, JPEG with EXIF). The commands and their output are kept in a test log. Intel VAAPI and QSV encoding was tested on an Intel HD Graphics 620 GPU.
Also checked on an Unraid 7.3.4 test server:
bsdtar 3.8.10 is present together with bsdcat and bsdunzip, and bsdtar -tf / bsdtar -xf list and extract the RAR5 test file;
the /boot/config/go line from the page loads the functions at login: after a reboot they are defined in an SSH login shell and in the web terminal; they are not defined in non-login shells such as bash -c (as the page says, "at login").
Still to check during review: file ownership on shares with --user 99:100, the /dev/dri group id on Unraid, and a stopped container on the Docker tab (checked in the webgui source only: DockerClient.php requests containers/json?all=1).
Notes for reviewers
RAR: bsdtar fails on encrypted and multi-volume RAR (libarchive 3.8.10, issue 3683 fixed on master), so the page keeps a container fallback. The linuxserver/unrar image from the first draft was dropped.
7zip-rar is in Debian non-free (unRAR licence). Please confirm the project is comfortable pointing readers to it.
The page deliberately does not cover tmux and screen, because a session cannot outlive a short-lived container.
No glossary entry was added; Docker has no glossary term, so it is written as plain text.
Background: prior reports and timeline
Unraid has never shipped a general package manager. From 2015 to 2022 most users added command-line tools with the NerdPack plugin; since its retirement the docs have no page that says what to use instead. The list below is what was found in public threads and release notes.
Pattern
43 user reports from 2019 to 2026 about tools installed on the flash drive or through NerdPack, NerdTools or un-get (2019: 1, 2021: 4, 2022: 11, 2023: 10, 2024: 4, 2025: 12, 2026: 1): 16 breakage, 19 "how do I get this tool now", 8 about whether it is safe or about upgrading.
37 of the 43 received no answer from a plugin maintainer or from Lime Technology; none was answered by Lime Technology staff. Where an answer came from the maintainer of a package plugin, it was a bug fix (11 weeks later), a request for details, or "use at your own risk".
The advice that users received, counted across the 43: a manual .txz in /boot/extra (11), un-get (8), NerdTools or NerdPack (7), a Docker container or VM (6), an app-store plugin (5), workaround hacks such as removing a stock library or symlinking an old one (5).
Breakage after upgrades is mostly library mismatch: libssl.so.1.1 (2024-07-29, 2025-07-15, 2025-08-29), libffi.so.7 (2023-02-21, 2024-01-25), libnsl.so.3 (2023-10-21), libmd.so.0 (2023-06-05), GLIBC_2.33 (2021-08-13) and GLIBC_2.38 (2025-01-27). Only two reports of a boot or web interface failure were found (2019-04-16: boot stuck on the glibc install; 2024-06-10: terminal, license check and dashboard broken after a manual glibc update).
Measured 2026-11-01 on a system with un-get packages installed: ffmpeg 7.1.3 had 36 shared libraries missing, mediainfo 25.07 two; the maintainer states un-get "is not a package manager".

6.12.0 release notes: NerdPack under "Obsolete/Broken plugins", "Switch to NerdTools" (https://docs.unraid.net/unraid-os/release-notes/6.12.0/). No later release note mentions NerdTools being abandoned, un-get, or a replacement (7.0.0, 7.1.0, 7.2.0, 7.3.0 searched; point releases not read).
un-get README (maintainer): "I would always recommend that you use Docker containers, LXC containers or VMs instead of running it on bare metal." (https://github.com/ich777/un-get)
No release note found that warns that base-library updates (glibc 2.40, 2.41, 2.42; openssl) can break packages kept in /boot/extra.
Fix Common Problems still carries the text "Extra packages being installed were found in /boot/extra. It is not recommended to install any packages this way." although the check was removed for 6.11 on 2022-10-09, and flags un-get as "not known to Community Applications".
Impact
A tool that worked stops after an upgrade and the user has to work out which library changed: "tmux: /lib64/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.33' not found" (2021-08-13); "since updating to Unraid 7, it seems that libssl.so.1.1 was updated to libssl.so.3" (2024-07-29).
Advice that alters the base system: remove the stock libffi ("you have to delete the one that comes installed with unraid, for this you can use the command removepkg libffi-3.4.4", 2024-01-27); update glibc ("nothing is accessible from the terminal ... the unraid license no longer works and my Dashboard is crashed", 2024-06-10); downgrade ncurses (2021-10-12).
Packages are reinstalled at every boot from the flash drive after the plugin is removed ("every time I boot my server it is installing rar and urar every time", 2023-08-29).
Uncertainty: "Man I am so nervous about upgrading since I heard people had issues." (2022-10-07); "Guess I won't be upgrading to version 7 for a while. I rely a lot on tmux, vim, and restic." (2025-02-27); "any bare metal modifications come with inherent risks" (2025-05-01); "So since I'm on 7.3.2 and it's stable, it should remain stable unless i start changing/updating things?" (2026-10-17). A user asking for upgrade advice while running Nerd Tools was told only to read the release notes (2025-03-03).
Users who give up on host packages end up in a container or VM ("I gave up and installed an Ubuntu VM", 2021-08-13; "I just switched to running borg in docker", 2023-02-21), often after the same search.
Why a fix now
Unraid 8 was announced on 2026-08-17 as a base-OS change with no release date. Until then, every 7.x user who needs ffmpeg, mediainfo, 7z, exiftool or tcpdump is pointed at NerdTools, which no longer works, or at un-get, which is archived and not in the app store. A page that shows the container route works on the current release and does not depend on what the base system ships.

Run tools and prepare images docs/unraid-os/using-unraid-to/run-docker-containers/run-command-line-tools-in-containers.mdx
Introduces container-based tool use and gives commands for common tools. Documents custom Alpine and Debian images, network access, and Intel GPU options.
The guide has several correctable pitfalls: extracted files may need ownership repair, the Intel example can select the wrong GPU, and the retained-container copy step fails. Two table entries also need clarification. These are bounded documentation issues rather than broad operational blockers.
