I have followed the Your First Code Contribution section of the Contributing guide\n\nAdds an optional delay prop to Tooltip that postpones opening hover-triggered tooltips by the specified number of milliseconds. The delay is applied only when opening, so closing remains responsive.\n\nIncludes a regression test and Tooltip documentation.\n\nFixes Add optional delay to Tooltips #589\n\nThere are no breaking API changes; delay is an optional prop.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Tooltips now support a configurable delay before opening on hover.
Documentation
Added guidance and an example for configuring the tooltip delay.
Tooltip accepts an optional delay prop and applies it to hover-triggered opening. The documentation describes the prop, and a test checks that the tooltip opens after 500 ms.
Tooltip forwards the optional delay through Floating to useFloatingInteractions, which passes it to useHover as the opening delay. A test checks delayed opening after 500 ms. The documentation and changeset describe the prop.
Issue 589 requests an optional delay before a tooltip appears on mouseover. This change adds a delay prop for hover-triggered tooltip opening.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 6d988
The delay boundary is covered. The change is mergeable with a bounded follow-up to test that leaving before the delay expires prevents opening; no production failure is established.

Add a 499 ms check so the test detects early opening.
The test samples the tooltip only at 0 ms and 500 ms. A hover delay shorter than 500 ms, such as 1 ms, passes both checks. Assert that the tooltip is still hidden at 499 ms, then advance one more millisecond and assert that it is visible.

Update the hover-delay test around fireEvent.mouseEnter to assert that the
tooltip remains hidden after 499 ms, then advance one more millisecond and
assert that it becomes visible.
Add a close-path assertion to the delayed-hover test.
Add a close-path assertion to the delayed-hover test.
The test delays opening when delay is provided fires only mouseEnter. The hook passes delay to useHover as { open: delay }, so the current code delays only opening. If delay were later passed as a scalar, useHover would also delay closing. This test would still pass, and the tooltip would remain visible for the delay after the pointer leaves. The PR states that closing stays responsive, and the test does not check that.
Closing runs through handleClose: safePolygon(). A plain mouseLeave may not close the tooltip in jsdom, so confirm the close trigger before writing the assertion.

Update the “delays opening when delay is provided” test to verify that after the
tooltip opens, leaving the hover interaction closes it immediately rather than
waiting for the delay. Confirm and use a close trigger that works with the
configured `safePolygon()` handler in jsdom.

The delay test fires mouseEnter and advances the timers. It never fires a leave event, so it does not check that a pending delayed open is cancelled. An implementation that opens the tooltip at 500 ms regardless of pointer position would pass this test. Add a case that fires mouseLeave on the target before 500 ms, advances the timers past 500 ms, and asserts that the tooltip keeps the invisible class.

Reviewed changes — reviewed PR #1698 adding an optional hover-open delay to Tooltip.
Plumbed delay prop through Tooltip → Floating — optional delay?: number threaded explicitly, so default behavior is unchanged when omitted.
Wired open-only delay into useHover — use-floating.ts maps delay to { open: delay }, keeping close responsive as described.
Added boundary regression test — asserts hidden at 0ms and 499ms, visible at 500ms for delay={500}.
Documented delay — new docs section with a 500ms example plus a changeset.
The boundary concern from the earlier bot thread is already addressed by the second commit (499ms/1ms assertions). The remaining bot suggestions (pointer-leave cancellation, close-path timing) would test floating-ui library behavior rather than this PR's mapping, so they don't clear the bar for required changes.
