Win release - #3702
Win release#3702
Conversation
Build libModSecurity for Windows x86 and x64, run the test suite and package the DLL, import library and public headers into one zip per architecture. On v3.* tags the zips are attached to the GitHub release. Refs owasp-modsecurity#3313
Build Release (/MD) and Debug (/MDd) packages for both x86 and x64. Debug packages include the PDB of libModSecurity.dll.

version-tag ref, so manual workflow_dispatch runs can still build and test but
never publish, even when targeting a tag.
- Line 102: In the Package step, pass github.ref_name through an environment
variable and set $version from that variable instead of interpolating the tag
name directly into the PowerShell script.

Related: #3653 updates the Windows build path used here. It pins Conan and CMake in CI, replaces conanfile.txt with a Conan 2 Python recipe, and updates vcbuild.bat to use generated CMake presets and propagate build failures. It also includes the YAJL fix for CMake 4. |
Drop the Conan cache from the release build (cache poisoning), pin Conan, fail on DLL dependencies outside an allowlist, attest build provenance, publish only for v3.X.Y tags, and ship a PDB with the Release packages. Leave the project version in build/win32/CMakeLists.txt as it was; owasp-modsecurity#3653 replaces it with the version read from modsecurity.h.

@fzipi @Easton97-Jens thanks for the reviews. I pushed a commit that addresses them:

Without the Conan cache, dependency sources are downloaded from their upstream hosts on every release run; git.openldap.org answered the parallel jobs with HTTP 429, and Conan gave up after 2 retries.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick winFix the release-tag trigger and validate the tag before building.
v3.[0-9]+.[0-9]+uses glob syntax, not regular-expression syntax. Therefore,v3.0.14does not trigger this workflow. The normal Windows release build and publish path is skipped. Manual dispatch is not a workaround becausepublishrequires a push event.Use a broad candidate glob, then reject tags that are not exact

@coderabbitai Regarding the outside-diff comment on the tag filter in release-windows.yml (review 5620036724): this is not an issue. GitHub's filter patterns support + (one or more of the preceding character) and [0-9] character ranges. The "Filter pattern cheat sheet" in the workflow syntax docs lists v[12].[0-9]+.[0-9]+ as matching e.g. v1.10.1 or v2.0.0. The pattern has also triggered this workflow on my fork twice for the tag v3.0.99. Moving to v3.* with a failing validation step would turn suffixed test tags into red runs instead of skipped ones. |

Tested the final workflow on my fork (tag v3.0.99 on 41865cd): https://github.com/airween/ModSecurity/actions/runs/39843246957 (2026.10.23). All 4 builds are green with 265/265 tests each, and the DLL dependency check passed. The draft release got all 8 files, the Release zips now include the PDB, and each zip has a provenance attestation. The run also hit HTTP 429 from git.openldap.org again, and the download retries absorbed it. I think I'm done with the PR, if no other notes. |

what
Add a GitHub Actions workflow (
.github/workflows/release-windows.yml) that builds libModSecurity for Windows and attaches the packages to the GitHub release. The workflow builds four configurations on
windows-2022:libmodsecurity-<tag>-windows-x64.zip/MDlibmodsecurity-<tag>-windows-x86.zip/MDlibmodsecurity-<tag>-windows-x64-debug.zip/MDdlibmodsecurity-<tag>-windows-x86-debug.zip/MDdEach package contains:
Every package has a
.sha256file next to it and a build provenance attestation (gh attestation verify <zip> -R owasp-modsecurity/ModSecurity).Release builds are linked with
/DEBUG(plus/OPT:REF /OPT:ICF), so the Release packages ship a matching PDB as well, and crash dumps of the released DLL can be symbolized.Steps of the workflow:
vcbuild.batinside the MSVC environment of the target arch (ilammy/msvc-dev-cmd)build-windowsjob ofci_new.ymlcmake --installpackages the build; for this,build/win32/CMakeLists.txtgetsinstall()rulesdumpbin /dependentschecks the DLL's imports against an allowlist (system DLLs and the VC++ runtime); the build fails if a dependency became a shared DLLTriggers:
v3.X.Y, no suffix): build, test, attest, and upload to the release of that tag (if the release doesn't exist yet, the workflow creates it as a draft)workflow_dispatch: build and test only, the packages are available as run artifactswhy
Users who embed libModSecurity on Windows currently have to set up the Conan + MSVC toolchain themselves. The 32-bit build is especially tricky, see #3313. Prebuilt packages for each release let them pick up security fixes quickly.
notes
conan==2.33.0). The recipe revisions are not locked yet; aconan.lockforbuild/win32would also change the CI builds, so it is left for a follow-up.build/win32/CMakeLists.txt; Update CI workflow and remove duplicate Windows Server 2022 job #3653 replaces it with the version read frommodsecurity.h. The two PRs merge without conflicts, and the workflow is compatible with the newvcbuild.bat(samebuild\win32\buildtree, same Conan version). If Update CI workflow and remove duplicate Windows Server 2022 job #3653 is merged first, thepip installline here should follow its pinned Conan/CMake versions./MTpackages: a DLL with a static CRT has its own heap, and the API is not safe across that boundary. For example, the inlinefree()helpers inintervention.hfree memory in the caller that was allocated inside the DLL, and the C++ API passesstd::string/shared_ptrobjects across the boundary. A proper/MToption would be a static library. We can add one later if there's demand./MDor Debug/MDd). The C API (msc_*) is less sensitive to this.build-windowsjob ofci_new.yml. Moving them into a shared script or reusable workflow is left for a follow-up.testing
