Don't overwrite same-named items when moving admin-owned files to the Trash - #121
Storage.clean moves items that only an administrator can move to the Trash with one batched /bin/mv -f per item. The Trash name for each item is picked with uniqueName(_:in:) while the commands are being built, but the moves only run afterwards, in one batch. A name picked for one item is therefore not in the Trash yet when the next item is named.
So two administrator-owned items with the same file name (two Cache.db files, say) get the same target path, and the second mv -f overwrites the first.
Reproduction
Mirrors what clean builds, in a temp folder:
mkdir -p a b trash;echo ONE > a/Cache.db;echo TWO > b/Cache.db
/bin/mv -f a/Cache.db trash/Cache.db
/bin/mv -f b/Cache.db trash/Cache.db
cat trash/Cache.db # TWO. The first item is gone.
Items the user can move themselves go through FileManager.trashItem, which names them itself, so only the administrator path is affected.
Fix
uniqueName takes an optional avoiding: set of names already handed out.
clean records each name it picks, so same-named items get Cache.db, Cache 2.db, Cache 3.db.
Two self-test checks added next to the existing uniqueName check.
No behaviour changes when names don't collide.
Testing
macOS 27.0.1 (arm64), Apple Swift 6.4, Command Line Tools only.
Built the command-line target with the change: swift build -c release succeeds. The full package doesn't build without Xcode here (SwiftUIMacros plugin missing), so I built the CLI target on its own.
I couldn't run removemacai selftest for the same reason (it needs the app target). I checked the new uniqueName logic with a standalone Swift copy of the function instead: three same-named items give Cache.db, Cache 2.db, Cache 3.db, and both new self-test expressions evaluate to true. Please run selftest on your side before merging.
I did not run clean against real administrator-owned files.
Cleanup now assigns distinct numbered names to items with matching filenames moved to Trash in the same batch. It also accounts for names already present in Trash, helping prevent destination conflicts and ensuring each queued item has a unique name. Existing naming behavior remains unchanged when no conflict is found.
… Trash
Storage.clean picks each item's Trash name with uniqueName(_:in:) while it
builds the list of administrator commands, but the moves only run later, in
one batch. A name chosen for one item is not in the Trash yet, so two items
with the same file name (for example two Cache.db files) got the same
target, and the second `mv -f` overwrote the first.
uniqueName now takes the names already handed out in the batch, and clean
reserves each name it picks. Two self-test checks cover the new behaviour.

Storage.clean now reserves Trash destination names as it queues administrator moves. uniqueName avoids both existing Trash names and names reserved during the current batch. SelfTest.swift checks suffix selection when names are already reserved.

uniqueName checks names reserved in the current batch. Storage.clean reserves each selected name before queuing its move. Self-tests check that reserved names receive the next available numeric suffix.
The change fixes the common case where same-named administrator-owned files overwrite each other in the Trash. Two narrower cases can still overwrite a trashed item: a regular item moved to the Trash after an administrator destination was chosen, and names that differ only by letter case on a case-insensitive volume. These should be addressed or explicitly accepted before merge.

Protect administrator destinations from later Trash moves.
FileManager.default.trashItem runs before Shell.admin(adminCommands, ...), but administrator destinations are selected and queued first. If an administrator-owned Cache.db is queued while ~/.Trash/Cache.db is free, a later successful Trash move can retain that basename. The queued /bin/mv -f can then overwrite it. reservedNames tracks only administrator destinations.
Select administrator destinations after the ordinary Trash moves, and prevent overwrites if a destination becomes occupied before each administrator move.

Match reservations using the Trash volume’s filename rules.
On a case-insensitive Trash volume, Cache.db and cache.db refer to the same destination, but taken.contains treats them as different names. If both administrator moves are queued before either runs, the second /bin/mv -f can overwrite the first file. Case-insensitive APFS is a supported format. (support.apple.com)
