Closes #1533

Problem

The Docker compute engine wrote every job input to /data/inputs/<file name> with no check
that the path was free, and for a URL the file name is the last path segment — chosen by the
dataset publisher. This produced two input-integrity failures:

  • Shared file name → silent overwrite. Two datasets whose files share a name (e.g. both
README.md) collapsed to one file; the second overwrote the first. The job ran with one
input missing and still exited 0. The algorithm could not detect it: /data/ddos was
created but left empty, and no environment variable said which file belonged to which DID.
A publisher could also pick a name on purpose to replace another dataset's file in a
    multi-dataset job.
  • A dataset named algoCustomData.json overwrote the consumer parameters. The consumer
parameters are written to /data/inputs/algoCustomData.json before the inputs, so a dataset
whose URL ends in that name replaced them — the dataset publisher controlling input that
should come from whoever runs the job.

This is a regression from the legacy stack: pod-configuration downloaded each input into its
own folder and operator-engine set DIDS / TRANSFORMATION_DID in the container, so names
could not collide and the algorithm knew which file was which. That contract is still the one
documented at
https://docs.oceanprotocol.com/developers/compute-to-data/compute-to-data-algorithms.

CWE-73 (External Control of File Name or Path). Note the file name is confined to
/data/inputs/ — URL.pathname.split('/').pop() cannot contain /, so this is an
in-directory collision, not arbitrary path control.

Fix

Restore the per-input isolation and the DID mapping the previous stack provided, matching the
documented algorithm contract. Decided layout:

  • Inputs: /data/inputs/<index>/<filename> (index = position in job.assets), uniform
for paid and free compute, with the original file name preserved.
  • DIDS env: a JSON array of input DIDs in the same order as the folders (so the
algorithm maps folder index → DID); raw free-compute inputs with no DID get a null slot.
  • TRANSFORMATION_DID env: the algorithm's DID (when it has one).
  • /data/ddos/<did>: each resolvable input's DDO JSON.

Because inputs now always live one level down, /data/inputs/algoCustomData.json can no
longer be overwritten by a dataset, and two inputs can never share a path. Both reported cases
are closed structurally.

Changes

src/components/c2d/compute_engine_docker.ts

  • Container env vars (in createDockerContainer). On top of any algorithm-provided
envs, the container now receives DIDS (JSON array, asset order, null for DID-less
inputs) and TRANSFORMATION_DID (the algorithm DID, when present). The previous
job.algorithm.envs-only block was extended rather than replaced.
  • Input download layout (in uploadData). Each input is written to
/data/inputs/<index>/<filename>; the index folder is created and chmod 0o777 to match
the job's other data dirs so the non-root container user can read it. path.basename
strips any directory components a storage driver might return (and falls back to the index
    when there is no name).
  • DDOs (in uploadData). For each asset with a documentId, the DDO is fetched via
FindDdoHandler and written to /data/ddos/<did>; path.basename guards against a crafted
documentId, and failures are logged to configuration.log rather than failing the job.
Raw fileObject inputs have no DDO to write.
  • /data/inputs/algoCustomData.json is unchanged (still written at the inputs root) and is
    now collision-proof.

src/test/integration/compute.test.ts

  • Fixed the stale-layout comment in the existing "MIX of persistent-storage and
non-persistent-storage datasets" test (inputs now land in their own /data/inputs/<index>
folder, counted as a directory entry).
  • Added "writes same-named inputs to separate per-index folders (no collision)" — runs a
free job with two datasets whose URLs both end in README.md, and asserts both survive in
folders 0 and 1, both keep the name README.md, and have different sizes (neither
    overwrote the other).
  • Added "a dataset named algoCustomData.json cannot overwrite the consumer parameters" —
    a dataset whose URL ends in algoCustomData.json plus algocustomdata set by the consumer;
asserts the algorithm reads the consumer value at /data/inputs/algoCustomData.json.

Breaking change

This rewrites the algorithm-facing contract. Every existing algorithm that reads
/data/inputs/<filename> must move to /data/inputs/<index>/<filename> (and may now use
DIDS / TRANSFORMATION_DID and /data/ddos/<did>). Warrants a version bump and a heads-up
to the algorithm / c2d-examples authors.

Edge case

Persistent-storage inputs are bind-mounted at /data/persistentStorage/... and skipped in
uploadData, so they occupy a DIDS slot but have no /data/inputs/<index> folder. This
matches reality (they live elsewhere) and such inputs are typically DID-less fileObjects, so
their DIDS slot is null.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Compute jobs now receive asset and transformation document identifiers, along with available asset documents.
    • URL datasets are stored in separate, index-specific folders, so datasets with the same filename remain distinct.
  • Bug Fixes
    • URL dataset filenames are kept separate from consumer parameters, preventing a dataset named algoCustomData.json from overwriting algocustomdata settings.
    • Assets without filenames receive a fallback name based on their position.

📝 Walkthrough

The compute engine now supplies asset and transformation document identifiers to algorithm containers, writes available asset DDOs, and places downloaded assets in index-specific directories. Integration tests cover duplicate URL filenames and consumer parameters.

Changes: C2D input provisioning

Layer / File(s) Summary
Asset document metadata
src/components/c2d/compute_engine_docker.ts
Algorithm containers receive asset-ordered DIDS and, when available, TRANSFORMATION_DID. Asset DDOs are written under the document ID basename when lookup and write succeed.
Index-specific asset paths
src/components/c2d/compute_engine_docker.ts, src/test/integration/compute.test.ts
Downloaded assets use index-specific directories and basename filenames. Integration tests check that same-name URL assets remain separate and consumer parameters are preserved.

If creating or setting permissions on an input folder fails, the compute job stays stuck in provisioning and is retried instead of failing cleanly. This is an uncommon filesystem error, but handling it before merge is a small change. The new per-index input layout otherwise looks sound.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The changes directly address #1533: inputs use per-index folders, DIDS maps asset order, TRANSFORMATION_DID is exposed, DDOs are attempted, and integration tests cover both reported collisions. However, the new calls path.join(jobFolderPath, 'data/inputs', i) and path.join(inputFolder, inputName) pass a number or string | number to Node's path.join, which accepts strings. This causes TypeScript compilation errors and prevents the fix from building.

Resolution

Convert the index and fallback name to strings before calling path.join, for example String(i) and String(i), then run the TypeScript build and relevant integration tests.

Handle input-directory failures as provisioning failures.

If mkdirSync() or chmodSync() throws, uploadData() rejects before its download handler returns DataProvisioningFailed. processJob() does not catch this rejection. InternalLoop() only logs rejected jobs, so the job keeps dateFinished unset and is selected again on the next loop.

Wrap the input-directory setup in the same handled provisioning path.

Overall risk: medium

Summary:
The PR introduces an excellent architectural change by isolating compute inputs into per-index directories, mitigating file collision risks and preventing malicious datasets from overwriting consumer parameters like algoCustomData.json. However, there are a few implementation bugs that need fixing: missing directory creation for /data/ddos/ causing silent failures, and passing a numeric index to path.join() which will crash Node.js.

Comments:
• [INFO][security] Good use of path.basename(asset.documentId) here. This effectively neutralizes any potential directory traversal attacks if a malicious actor were to supply a crafted DID containing path separators.
• [WARNING][bug] The /data/ddos directory is newly introduced but it doesn't appear to be explicitly created before writing to it. If the directory does not exist, writeFileSync will throw an ENOENT error. Because of the catch block, this will fail silently and just log an error, breaking the DDO mapping feature for the algorithm. You should ensure the directory exists before writing.

+ const ddoDir = path.join(jobFolderPath, 'data/ddos')
+            if (!existsSync(ddoDir)) {
+ mkdirSync(ddoDir, { recursive: true })
+            }
- const ddoPath = path.join(
- jobFolderPath,
- 'data/ddos',

- )
+ const ddoPath = path.join(ddoDir, path.basename(asset.documentId))

• [ERROR][bug] Node.js path.join() strictly requires all arguments to be strings. Since the loop index i is a number, this will throw a TypeError [ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE] at runtime and fail the pipeline. You must explicitly convert it to a string.

- const inputFolder = path.join(jobFolderPath, 'data/inputs', i)
+ const inputFolder = path.join(jobFolderPath, 'data/inputs', String(i))

• [ERROR][bug] Similar to the path.join above, if i is the number 0, it evaluates to falsy ('' || 0 is 0). This forces the subsequent path.join to receive a number instead of a string, triggering an error. Using String(i) ensures both truthiness (for the fallback assignment) and type safety.

-        const inputName = path.basename(fileInfo[0].name || '') || i
+        const inputName = path.basename(fileInfo[0].name || '') || String(i)

all warnings/errors are false positives:

  • Finding 2 (/data/ddos ENOENT) — the directory is created by makeJobFolders at job creation (line 1716), well before uploadData writes to it; it's in the same dirs array as /data/logs, which uploadData already writes to successfully.
  • Finding 3 (path.join(i) TypeError) — for (const i in job.assets) is a for...in loop, so i is always a string, not a number. TS types it string; type-check passes.
  • Finding 4 (i === 0 falsy fallback) — same false premise; i is the truthy string '0', and the fallback yields a string.
