Adds OpenXmlChartSheet: put one among the exported sheets and it's written as a chart sheet. A chart combines scatter, line, column and bar plots on primary and secondary axes, with series from cell ranges or literal values, axis titles, bounds, number formats, label rotation, gridlines, colors with transparency and per-series legend visibility.

Checked in Excel 16 (opens without repair; combo charts, secondary axes and hidden legend entries render as set). Two Excel details are handled in the writer: legendEntry indexes count legend positions as Excel draws them, not series indexes, and range series get an empty cache, without which Excel ignores hidden entries.

Only chart sheets for now; charts anchored on a worksheet could reuse the same model later.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for exporting chart-only worksheets alongside data sheets.
    • Configure scatter, line, column, and bar charts with multiple plots, primary or secondary axes, titles, legends, series names and colors, and data from worksheet ranges or literal values.
    • Customize axis bounds, labels, gridlines, and styling, including color transparency.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on creating and exporting chart sheets.

An OpenXmlChartSheet among the exported sheets is written as a chart
sheet. Charts combine scatter, line, column and bar plots on primary
and secondary axes, with series from cell ranges or literal values.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds chart-sheet configuration and XML generation, then integrates chart sheets into workbook export. Chart sheets can reference worksheet ranges or literal values and include multiple plot types, axis settings, legends, and styling.

The public chart models define chart sheets, plots, series, axes, styling, and range- or literal-based data. The README adds an export example and describes chart options.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to a963d

Copying a chart sheet can produce a meaningless worksheet, and an infinite axis setting can produce a chart that Excel repairs or rejects. Both should be fixed, but the remaining risk is bounded.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to a963d

Chart export introduces a data-lifecycle gap: replacing a chart sheet through the copy-and-update API can leave its original literal data inside the output workbook. The exposure is conditional on sharing that output and is limited to data already present in the input workbook. Range references also accept external-reference-shaped names, but downstream network access has not been established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Chart-sheet replacement does not retire chart-owned literal data. CopyAndAddSheetAsync with overwriteSheet enabled writes a worksheet replacement but copies the old chart and chart-sheet parts because its exclusion list covers worksheet and drawing parts only. If the resulting workbook is distributed as the replacement, recipients can recover the old chart literals from the archive. The copy behavior is pre-existing, but this PR introduces the chart-data producer without completing its update and retirement lifecycle. Range-backed series have empty caches, so this does not imply retention of every referenced cell value.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported confidentiality exposure is bounded to chart literals already present in a caller-supplied workbook and subsequently copied into its replacement output. A recipient of that archive needs no export-service privilege to inspect retained parts. This path does not establish access to another tenant, arbitrary server files, credentials or infrastructure authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A conditional disclosure path is: export sensitive literal chart data, replace that chart sheet through copy-and-add with overwrite enabled, then distribute the output. The replacement worksheet is written while old chart parts are copied verbatim, allowing archive inspection to recover superseded literals. This is not evidence that overwrite promises secure erasure or that every update discloses data; it is a chart ownership and cleanup gap made reachable by the new producer.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — XML encoding prevents caller strings from directly becoming chart XML markup. It does not constrain spreadsheet-reference semantics: a name such as [Book.xlsx]Sheet1 is preserved inside the quoted chart formula. The library-side acceptance is established, but whether a spreadsheet consumer resolves such references or performs network access remains unknown; no network-execution vulnerability is claimed.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Chart export validates structure before writing package entries and propagates cancellation through writes. Package generation and in-place replacement nevertheless use multiple writes and deletions without a transactional commit or compensating rollback. This mutation model is inherited rather than a newly introduced security finding; failed operations should not be assumed to have completed data retirement.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define chart-sheet replacement as an ownership transition covering the sheet part, drawing relationships and chart data together. Until that transition is supported, reject replacement of chart sheets rather than emitting a worksheet while retaining chart-owned data.
  • proposed — Enforce a same-workbook sheet-name contract for FromRange, or make any external-reference capability explicit and separately validated. XML escaping should remain in place but should not serve as the reference-authority control.

Reject chart sheets in CopyAndAddSheetAsync.

An OpenXmlChartSheet passed to either CopyAndAddSheetAsync overload enters the copy writer and can reach worksheet-row serialization. Add the existing guard at the shared stream boundary.

The path-based InsertSheetAsync behavior is valid. When the target path does not exist, it calls ExportAsync, which is the chart-sheet creation path. Do not reject that case.

🌐 Web query:

official Open XML chart c:max c:min c:majorUnit val numeric type ST_Double non-finite NaN Infinity lexical values

💡 Result:

**Yes—at the XML Schema level, non-finite values are allowed** for the chart’s `c:max` and `c:min`: ECMA-376’s chart schema defines them as `CT_Double`, whose required `val` is `xsd:double`. ([hellowac.github.io](https://hellowac.github.io/ecma-376-zh-cn/xsd/new/xmlSchema/dml-chart/?utm_source=openai))

The `xsd:double` lexical forms are exactly **`INF`**, **`-INF`**, and **`NaN`**. The spelling `Infinity` is not the XML Schema lexical form. ([w3.org](https://www.w3.org/TR/xmlschema-2/datatypes.html?utm_source=openai)) So, for example, `<c:max val="INF"/>` is schema-valid.

One important distinction: in standard DrawingML charts, **`c:majorUnit` is also `CT_Double`**, so its `val` has the same lexical space. ([schemas.liquid-technologies.com](https://schemas.liquid-technologies.com/OfficeOpenXML/2006/majorunit1.html?utm_source=openai)) Schema-validity does not establish that Excel or another chart application will handle these values meaningfully; consumer behavior is unresolved by those schema sources.

Reject infinite axis values before serialization.

OpenXmlChartAxis accepts infinite Minimum, Maximum, and MajorUnit values. ChartXml.Validate does not reject them. Number formats them as Infinity or -Infinity, but Open XML requires INF or -INF. This produces a non-conforming chart part that a consumer can reject or repair.
