The laptop screen generator (web/js/screens.js) ignored image decode failures. If you loaded a valid image and then picked a corrupted one, the status still said "Ready" and the PDF download used the old image. Non-image files were also dropped without any message.
Changes to loadImage():
Clear state.image (and revoke any pending object URL) as soon as a new file is picked, so the preview and PDF can't fall back to an older image.
img.onerror sets an error message ("Could not load . The file may be corrupted or in an unsupported format. Try another image."). renderPreview() shows that message in #scr-status as an error. Download stays disabled because no image is loaded.
Non-image files get a similar message instead of being ignored.
The error is kept in state.imageError, so a resize or slider re-render doesn't replace it with "No image yet". Picking another file clears it.
Clear the previous image when a new file is picked, and report decode
failures and non-image files in the status line. The PDF download stays
disabled until a valid image loads.

Image selection now clears the previous image, reports non-image selections and image load failures, and updates the preview status. The file input resets after selection so the same file can be selected again.
Changes: Image Preview Error Handling
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Selection and load error handling web/js/screens.js
The UI tracks image errors. Non-image selections clear the previous image and report an error. Failed loads report an error only for the current URL. The preview status updates during loading and after a failure, and the file input resets after selection.
jamro/tiny-engineer#88 — Introduced the image-upload preview flow that this change updates.
jamro/tiny-engineer#97 — Updates the same image-loading flow with pending URL cleanup and stale callback checks.

Merge Risk: Low · up to f4691
An in-progress PDF export can leave the error message hidden and download enabled after an invalid file is selected. This is a bounded UI-state risk to address or explicitly accept before merging.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Directly linked issue #95 has three coding acceptance criteria and one manual verification item. The verification item is non-coding and is not assessed.
[#95] Handle load failures with img.onerror: loadImage() sets img.onerror. The handler returns if state.imageUrl no longer matches url. Otherwise it revokes the URL, clears state.imageUrl, sets state.imageError, and calls renderPreview().
[#95] Actionable error message: state.imageError reads "Could not <name>. The file may be corrupted or in an unsupported format. Try another image." renderPreview() checks state.imageError before the 'No image yet' branch. It writes the message to #scr-status with class is-err, so the error survives resize and slider re-renders.
[#95] Preview and PDF cannot use the wrong image: loadImage() sets state.image = null and revokes the old URL before any new load. renderPreview() sets #scr-download disabled when source is 'image' and state.image is null. drawInsert() draws state.image only when it is set, and buildPdf() uses drawInsert().
[#95] Retry with another image: picking a new file clears state.image and state.imageError. The change handler also resets the input value, so the same file can be picked again.
The reviewed head adds a input value reset that was not in the previous review. This assessment covers it from the whole-PR diff. The incremental diff was unavailable. The unchanged onload body was truncated in the file read, so its URL check was not re-read. This does not change the verdict, because the failure path depends on the onerror handler, which was read directly.
No automated test is committed. web/ has no test harness, so the verification item is not assessed here.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All changes are in web/js/screens.js. Each change connects to issue #95:
Adds state.imageError and uses it in renderPreview(). This keeps the load error across re-renders.
loadImage() clears state.image and the old object URL before a new file loads. This prevents a stale image from being used.
Non-image files set a message and return before any load. This reports an unsupported file, which matches the 'unsupported format' case in #95.
img.onerror reports the failure and clears the URL.
The change handler sets e.target.value = '' after loadImage(). This lets the user pick the same file again after a failed attempt. It supports the retry requirement in #95 and the commit message.
renderPreview() is called at the start of loadImage(), so the cleared state appears at once.
The whole-PR diff shows no unrelated refactoring, formatting churn, or changes to exported declarations. The added or changed lines are the lines needed for these behaviours.

Explanation
Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 1 files.

Preserve image state when an export finishes.
If an invalid file is dropped while buildPdf() is pending, the export completion replaces the image error and enables download. A subsequent download can contain a blank insert. Keep the button disabled when the current image is absent, and prevent the older export from replacing the current error. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the export completion flow in buildPdf so it does not overwrite the
current image error when an older export finishes after the image changes. Keep
the download button disabled whenever the current image is absent, and only
enable it when the completed export still corresponds to a valid current image.
