Fix false passes and stale results in Doctor diagnostics - #722
Fixes four Doctor diagnostics that could report a broken application as healthy, report stale results, or fail without any details.
Purpose
Doctor is meant to catch broken infrastructure and configuration before they cause runtime failures. These fixes make the Redis, configuration, and Composer diagnostics match how the framework behaves at runtime and in long-lived processes. The beneficiaries are developers and CI pipelines that rely on php artisan doctor, and applications that run Doctor programmatically or on a schedule.
Problem
Redis probes ignore failed PING replies. When Redis answers PING with an ERR reply, such as max number of clients reached, phpredis returns false instead of throwing. The Redis, queue, and session reachability diagnostics only treated exceptions as failures. They passed exactly when the server was rejecting clients.
Blank default drivers pass the configuration diagnostic.RequiredConfigurationValuesAreSet substituted hardcoded drivers (log, database, local, null) when mail.default, queue.default, filesystems.default, or broadcasting.default was blank or null. The managers read these keys with typed getters, so at runtime the same value throws, for example Mailer [] is not defined. A blank environment value such as MAIL_MAILER= therefore passed Doctor and failed in production. It also violated the rule that required settings must not have code-level fallbacks.
composer.json is read once per worker.ComposerJson memoized the decoded manifest, but the container auto-singletons the class. In a long-lived process, the PHP version and extension diagnostics kept using the first read after composer.json changed. Scheduled doctor commands run inside the scheduler process, and Doctor::run() runs inside workers, so both were affected.
Composer failures could have empty details. When Composer exited unsuccessfully without writing to stdout or stderr, for example after being killed, the autoload check and fix reported an empty details string.
Architecture and Implementation
RedisConnectionsAreReachable, QueueConnectionIsReachable, and SessionDriverIsReachable treat ping() === false as a failure. The Redis diagnostic records it as a failed connection. The queue and session probes throw a RuntimeException, which their existing error handling reports. This matches RedisConnection::pingForHeartbeat().
RequiredConfigurationValuesAreSet adds missingDefaultValues(). It reports blank, null, or non-string broadcasting.default, filesystems.default, mail.default, and queue.default values as missing. The driver-specific checks for these settings no longer substitute a default and are skipped when their default is unusable.
logging.default is handled differently. LogManager reads it as nullable and falls back to its emergency logger, so a blank value is not reported. The diagnostic simply stops assuming the stack channel.
ComposerJson::contents() decodes composer.json on every call and holds no state. The class stays auto-singletoned, but a shared instance no longer causes stale results.
ComposerAutoloadIsValid builds failure details for both check() and fix() with the existing Details::processOutput() helper. When there is no output, it falls back to Composer exited with code N without output.
No public APIs, configuration keys, or command options change.
Design Decisions and Trade-offs
Generic Redis failure message. The Redis failure message does not include Redis's error text. Reading getLastError() reliably would require running the probe through Redis::withConnection() so the same pooled connection is used. The diagnostic result is correct without it.
Blank defaults are reported, not resolved. The configuration diagnostic reports blank defaults instead of guessing the intended driver. Omitted or misspelled keys are unaffected: framework configuration merging still provides the shipped defaults.
composer.json is re-read. Reading the file on each call costs a few small file reads per Doctor run. Removing the memoized state was preferred to marking the class Transient.
Divergence from upstream. These diagnostics are ported from laravel/doctor. The Redis, configuration, and Composer details changes diverge from upstream code that has the same behavior, which adds manual merge work when syncing upstream changes.
Changes
Redis reachability
Report connections whose PING returns false in the Redis, queue, and session diagnostics.
Add one regression test per diagnostic.
Required configuration values
Report blank or null default broadcasting, filesystem, mail, and queue settings as missing.
Stop assuming a stack log channel when logging.default is blank.
Add regression tests for each default key and for the logging behavior.
Composer manifest
Read composer.json on each ComposerJson call.
Add a regression test that rechecks root PHP requirements after the manifest changes.
Composer autoload
Use Details::processOutput() with an exit-code fallback for check and fix failures.
Add a regression test for failures without output.
Validation
composer test:parallel -- --processes=4 tests/Doctor: 458 tests passed, 1 skipped. The skip is an existing environment-dependent requirement on the phpredis version or OPcache.
vendor/bin/phpstan analyse --memory-limit=4G: no errors. composer analyse exhausted the default 128M PHP memory limit locally, so the main PHPStan configuration was run directly with a higher limit.
php-cs-fixer with the repository configuration on the changed files: no changes required.
The new regression tests were also run against the pre-change Doctor sources and failed.
Manual reproductions:
phpredis 6.3.0 returned false from PING against a local RESP server that replied -ERR max number of clients reached.
Blank mail.default, queue.default, filesystems.default, and broadcasting.default values each threw at runtime while the old diagnostic passed.
Not run: the full components test suite, the phpstan.types.neon.dist and skeleton analysis steps, and an end-to-end check against a Redis server that has actually reached maxclients.
Risks and Review Notes
The configuration diagnostic now fails for applications whose broadcasting, filesystem, mail, or queue default is blank or null. Those applications already fail at runtime when they use that service.
RequiredConfigurationValuesAreSet still falls back to the connection name when a connection's driver key is missing, for example Configured::string("broadcasting.connections.{$connection}.driver", $connection). Whether this also hides runtime failures has not been verified, and it is not changed here.
No other material risks have been identified based on the available evidence.
Related Information
Upstream laravel/doctor has the same behavior for the Redis probes, the default-driver fallbacks, and empty Composer failure details.
Note
Fix false passes and stale results in Doctor diagnostics
RequiredConfigurationValuesAreSet now reports blank or missing default-driver values (broadcasting, filesystems, logging, mail, queue) instead of assuming a fallback driver and checking its configuration
Redis PING probes in QueueConnectionIsReachable, RedisConnectionsAreReachable, and SessionDriverIsReachable now treat a false PING result as a failure instead of continuing
ComposerAutoloadIsValid check and fix paths use a shared failureDetails helper with an exit-code fallback message when Composer produces no output
ComposerJson.contents no longer caches decoded composer.json, so repeated checks see current file contents (see ComposerJson.php)
Behavioral Change: long-running doctor workers now re-read composer.json on each diagnostic run, and setups with unset default drivers that previously passed the required-configuration check will now fail it
phpredis returns false instead of throwing when Redis answers PING with
an ERR reply, such as "max number of clients reached". The Redis, queue,
and session reachability diagnostics only treated exceptions as
failures, so they reported a rejecting server as healthy.
Each probe now checks for a false PING result and reports the affected
connection as unreachable.
ComposerJson memoized the decoded manifest, but the container keeps one
instance for the worker lifetime. Repeated Doctor runs in a long-lived
process, such as a scheduled doctor command, kept checking the PHP and
extension requirements from the first read after composer.json changed.
ComposerJson now decodes the file on each call instead of caching it.
RequiredConfigurationValuesAreSet substituted hardcoded drivers when the
default broadcasting, filesystem, mail, or queue setting was blank or
null. The managers read these keys with typed getters and fail at
runtime instead, so a blank value such as MAIL_MAILER= passed the
diagnostic while the application could not resolve its default driver.
Blank or null defaults are now reported as missing values, and their
driver-specific checks are skipped. A blank logging.default no longer
assumes the stack channel, since LogManager treats a missing default
channel as optional and uses its emergency logger.
When Composer exited unsuccessfully without writing to stdout or
stderr, for example after being killed, the autoload check and fix
reported an empty details string.
Both paths now use Details::processOutput() and fall back to a message
that includes Composer's exit code.

Fix false passes and stale results in Doctor diagnostics
🐞 Bug fix🧪 Tests🕐 20-40 Minutes
AI Description
• Fail Redis, queue, and session diagnostics when Redis rejects a PING without throwing.
• Report unusable default drivers and re-read composer.json so repeated checks reflect current
configuration.
• Provide Composer exit-code details when autoload checks or fixes fail without output.
Keep the targeted fixes. Checking an explicit false PING result and reporting unusable defaults match the runtime failure modes. Re-reading the small manifest also handles repeated checks on the same diagnostic instance; making ComposerJson transient alone would not guarantee that. A shared Redis probe could reduce repetition, but adds little value for three short, differently reported checks.

1. A missing exit code prints a blank number 🐞 Bug◔ Observability
Description
failureDetails() interpolates the nullable result of exitCode() directly into its fallback
message. If a failed Composer process has no output and no exit code, both the check and fix display
Composer exited with code without output.
+ "Composer exited with code {$process->exitCode()} without output.",
Evidence
The process-result contract permits a null exit code. The new fallback interpolates that value, and
processOutput() returns the fallback when both output streams are empty.

Preserve stdout when stderr contains only whitespace.
If Composer or a script writes an error to stdout and only whitespace to stderr, Details::processOutput() selects stderr before trimming it. The new fallback then incorrectly says Composer produced no output.
Trim stderr before choosing between streams, and use the fallback only when both trimmed streams are empty.

Reject whitespace-only defaults.
Configured::string() accepts whitespace-only strings. For example, mail.default = ' ' passes this check, but MailManager cannot resolve that mailer when it is not configured. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Treat whitespace-only defaults as missing, and use the same rule to skip their driver-specific checks.
