VideoToolbox decodes HEVC Main 10 into a P010 CVPixelBuffer (x420, 16 bits per sample). Compositor::nv12_srvs on macOS always wrapped the planes as R8Unorm / RG8Unorm, so each sample turned into two texels: stripes and green/yellow blocks, as in the report. 8-bit sources were fine.
Fix
Pick R16Unorm / RG16Unorm when the buffer is x420 / xf20. P010 keeps its value in the high bits, so the shader reads the same normalised values as NV12. Zero-copy is kept; 8-bit buffers take the exact same path as before.

Dolby Vision 8.4 RPU: not reproduced (no DV encoder here). DV 8.4 is HLG-compatible HEVC Main 10, so it decodes through this same path.
HLG / bt2020 is not tone-mapped: colours come out a bit flat compared with QuickTime. Separate issue.
The display matrix rotation is not applied by the compositor: a portrait iPhone clip still renders landscape. Separate issue.
Improved macOS video rendering for supported 10-bit HEVC and full-range formats, preserving image detail and rendering colors and brightness more accurately.
Added correct handling for full-range video, while maintaining existing limited-range rendering.
Tests
Added macOS integration tests that check rendered color and brightness for 10-bit HEVC and full-range video samples when the corresponding sample videos are configured.

VideoToolbox decodes HEVC Main 10 into a P010 CVPixelBuffer ('x420'), but
nv12_srvs always wrapped its planes as R8Unorm/RG8Unorm, so each 16-bit

Summary
Pixel formats and color conversion crates/compositor/src/mac_frames.rs, crates/compositor/src/compositor_macos.rs, crates/compositor/src/shaders.metal
Pixel-buffer creation accepts a format code, and existing callers specify limited-range 420v. The compositor selects 16-bit textures for recognized 10-bit formats and uses a marked UV view for full-range formats. The shader uses that marker to select full-range BT.709 conversion; other samples retain limited-range conversion.
Format and rendering tests crates/compositor/src/compositor_macos.rs, crates/compositor/tests/hevc10_decode.rs
Adds checks for texture formats and full-range markers. Optional macOS tests render frame 10 from supplied video sources and check split red and blue regions or dark and light gray regions. Each integration test skips when its source environment variable is unset.

crates/compositor/src/compositor_macos.rs:1182-1184 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Apply full-range conversion for xf20 buffers.
nv12_srvs maps xf20 (CV_420_10_BIPLANAR_FULL) to the same R16Unorm/RG16Unorm textures as x420. sample_yuv then always calls yuv709_limited, which applies limited-range scaling: a 16 offset with a 219 divisor for luma, and a 224 divisor for chroma. An xf20 buffer carries full-range samples, so this conversion can clip the output. Luma Y=0 is crushed to black, Y=1023 is clipped to white, and chroma is scaled by 255/224 instead of 255/255, which inflates saturation.
The shader needs a range input from nv12_srvs. Use a full-range conversion for xf20 samples, and keep yuv709_limited for x420 and 8-bit formats.
This range handling predates this PR. The shader is unchanged, and xf20 already reached the same limited-range conversion at the merge base through the 8-bit path. This PR moves xf20 to 16-bit samples on that same path.
Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base 06bd7f2e7756); the change keeps it reachable.

Update nv12_srvs and sample_yuv to pass and use a range indicator for
CV_420_10_BIPLANAR_FULL (xf20), applying full-range conversion to its samples.
Keep yuv709_limited for x420 and 8-bit formats.
Assert the decoded pixel format in the 10-bit HEVC test.
The test reads only frame.rgba and checks six colour samples, so it cannot show which path produced the frame. RenderedFrame has no pixel-format field (crates/compositor/src/timeline_walk.rs:169-176). The P010 branch (x420 / xf20) and the NV12 CPU path therefore look the same to the test. The CPU path produces NV12 frames (crates/compositor/src/pipeline_macos.rs:326-332, crates/compositor/src/mac_frames.rs:195-230).
Expose the decoded format on RenderedFrame. Read it from the same buffer that crates/compositor/src/compositor_macos.rs branches on at line 1181. Then assert it in the test against CV_420_10_BIPLANAR_VIDEO or CV_420_10_BIPLANAR_FULL (crates/compositor/src/compositor_macos.rs:107-108).
The compositor does not yet pass that format through render_frames. The new field also needs a value at each RenderedFrame construction site (crates/compositor/src/timeline_walk.rs:227, :652, :658). Implement that plumbing before adding the assertion.

…ge BT.709 on macOS
420f and xf20 buffers went through the limited-range conversion, lifting
blacks and crushing whites. nv12_srvs now hands the shader a CbCr view whose
blue channel is 1 for those formats, and sample_yuv picks the conversion
from it. The test now escapes the source path and checks a full-range clip.
Full-range conversion (major): confirmed, and it hit 8-bit 420f too, not only xf20. nv12_srvs now returns a CbCr view whose blue channel is 1 for 420f/xf20 (texture swizzle), and sample_yuv picks yuv709_full from it. Limited range stays the default, so no draw call or LayerCB changed.
Measured on the Mac (M1), full-range grey split 0x20 | 0xe0:
before: left half reads 17 instead of 32, in 8 and 10 bits
after: 32 / 224 within 6, for xf20, 420f, and the limited-range controls; a_10_bit_hevc_frame_keeps_its_colours still passes
reference 1080p export (limited range, screen + webcam, 900 frames): identical framemd5 before/after, 4.674 s vs 4.677 s mean over 3 alternating runs
Pixel format on RenderedFrame (nitpick): skipping this one. It needs a new field threaded through render_frames and every RenderedFrame construction site in timeline_walk, only for a test. The colour checks already tell the paths apart: read as NV12, the 10-bit clip renders in yellow/green bands, which is exactly what the test catches.
Select the YCbCr matrix per buffer instead of hard-coding BT.709.
The c.b marker selects only the range. sample_yuv still applies BT.709 coefficients to every marked buffer. A full-range VideoToolbox buffer from a BT.601 source therefore renders with wrong hues. The code never reads the buffer's YCbCr matrix attachment. This error predates the PR; the change only alters range selection.

Update sample_yuv to select YCbCr conversion coefficients from each buffer’s
matrix attachment instead of always using BT.709. Keep the c.b marker
responsible only for range selection, and preserve the existing full- versus
limited-range behavior.
Assert the decoded pixel format in the full-range test.
a_full_range_frame_keeps_its_levels checks only the rendered RGB levels. It does not show that full_range_view ran. That view is applied only when the decoded CVPixelBuffer format is 420f or xf20. A limited-range buffer skips it, so the test can pass with or without the view. A limited-range buffer can come from the software fallback path, which converts to NV12 and allocates a limited-range 420v buffer.
Assert that the frame reaching the NV12 texture path has pixel format 420f (0x34323066) or xf20 (0x78663230). Do not reuse a 10-bit x420/P010 check. That check proves 10-bit decoding, not full-range decoding.
Exposing that format to the test needs plumbing. RenderedFrame has no pixel-format field, and integration tests cannot read cfg(test) items from the library. Choose the observation point before adding it. Adding a field to RenderedFrame also touches its construction sites in timeline_walk.

Plumb the decoded CVPixelBuffer format observed before the NV12 texture path
into a value accessible to the integration test; do not rely on cfg(test)-only
library items. Update a_full_range_frame_keeps_its_levels to assert the format
is 420f or xf20, not x420/P010, while preserving its existing level checks. If
exposing the format through RenderedFrame, update its construction sites in
timeline_walk as well.
Add a colored full-range fixture so the full-range chroma path is tested.
a_full_range_frame_keeps_its_levels uses only neutral gray. With neutral chroma, the full-range conversion returns (y, y, y), which is the same output as a conversion that drops chroma. The test therefore cannot detect a regression that drops chroma on the full-range path. Add a full-range fixture with saturated colors, and assert its per-channel values with a tolerance.
Fixture and assertion scope
The change is a test-coverage improvement. It is not a production defect. Keep the existing grayscale test, because it checks levels. Use the same scale=out_range=full capture approach for a colored source. Set expected RGB values from the BT.709 full-range mapping, and allow for 10-bit encode and decode error.

Add a CI-run check for the P010 and full-range format selection.
Both HEVC tests return before any assertion when their source variable is unset. The macOS CI jobs compile this file with cargo test -p openscreen-compositor --lib --tests. No CI file sets OPENSCREEN_HEVC10_SOURCE or OPENSCREEN_FULL_RANGE_SOURCE, so both tests pass without checking the decode. The export tests in export_timing.rs also skip, because CI does not set OPENSCREEN_TEST_MEDIA. A regression in the P010 branch at compositor_macos.rs:1206-1214 can leave CI green.
Choose one of these changes:
Add a test that creates a P010 pixel buffer in process and asserts the selected format and full-range view. This needs no media file. It must call the format-selection code directly.
Add a CI step that generates the 10-bit input and runs hevc10_decode. This needs ffmpeg and a 10-bit HEVC encoder on the runner. The workflows do not install either today.
This is a coverage gap for behavior that the author reports as working. It is not a broken test.

a_full_range_frame_keeps_its_levels documents both 420f and xf20, but its only fixture is a P010 (xf20) source. The 420f arm in nv12_srvs is a separate matches! token, so the 8-bit full-range path has no test. Removing CV_420_8_BIPLANAR_FULL from that arm would leave this test passing. Add a second test with an 8-bit full-range source that decodes to 420f. Keep the xf20 case in the existing test.

Add a routinely run colour test for the 16-bit path.
nv12_srvs_reads_bit_depth_and_range_from_the_pixel_format checks plane pixel formats and the full-range swizzle flag. It does not sample or compare pixel colours. The only 10-bit colour checks in crates/compositor/tests/hevc10_decode.rs return early unless OPENSCREEN_HEVC10_SOURCE or OPENSCREEN_FULL_RANGE_SOURCE is set. The macOS CI steps do not set either variable. A regression in 16-bit sample interpretation, such as a rescale added to sample_yuv, can pass CI.
Add a test that builds x420 and xf20 buffers with known P010 sample values, renders them, and asserts the output colours. Place it where the --lib --tests step runs it.

Add a routinely run 16-bit colour test alongside the existing macOS pixel-format
tests, where the library test step executes it. Build and render x420 and xf20
buffers using known P010 sample values, then assert the output colours so the
test detects incorrect 16-bit interpretation.
The new test in compositor_macos.rs checks only the full-range flag on the CbCr view. The only level check, a_full_range_frame_keeps_its_levels, returns early unless OPENSCREEN_FULL_RANGE_SOURCE is set. No CI step sets that variable, and no step creates the required media file. A regression in yuv709_full can therefore pass the routine test run.
Build a 420f and an xf20 buffer in process with known Y and CbCr values. Render them through sample_yuv and assert the expected RGB levels. Keep the check limited to full-range output.

VideoToolbox decodes HEVC Main 10 into a P010
CVPixelBuffer(x420, 16 bits per sample).Compositor::nv12_srvson macOS always wrapped the planes asR8Unorm/RG8Unorm, so each sample turned into two texels: stripes and green/yellow blocks, as in the report. 8-bit sources were fine.Fix

R16Unorm/RG16Unormwhen the buffer isx420/xf20. P010 keeps its value in the high bits, so the shader reads the same normalised values as NV12. Zero-copy is kept; 8-bit buffers take the exact same path as before.Proof (Mac mini M1, macOS 27.0.1)
