feat(linux): record on Hyprland with cursor positions, auto-zoom and GPU import - #1406
Makes recording on Hyprland work end to end: smooth 4K capture, cursor positions for the editable cursor and auto-zoom, click capture, and a HUD that fits the bar. Tested on Omarchy (dev build v4.5.0-rc2-71-g84782475aeb, quattro branch, edge channel) with Hyprland 0.56.2, xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland 1.4.1, hyprland-preview-share-picker 0.2.1 and kernel 7.2.8-10-omarchy, on Intel Arc B390 (iHD), a 3072x1920 laptop panel plus a 3840x2160 monitor, both at scale 2.
Capture performance (4K60)
3d22bf48 Read LINEAR dmabufs out of write-combined memory with SSE4.1 streaming loads: ~100 ms to ~3.3 ms per 4K frame for the CPU path.
e11b16c3 Thread the colour conversion through sws_scale_frame (sws_scale ignored threads): 7.6 ms to 4.0 ms per 4K frame.
908902f5 Stamp frames by the slot they arrived in, not when they were encoded, so steady 60 Hz motion no longer records with 33 ms gaps.
285ef544 Pass the real dmabuf size to the VA-API import; iHD refuses a LINEAR buffer described with size 0.
2ae896c9 When the VA-API import is available, send LINEAR dmabufs to it instead of mapping them. They used to take the CPU route only because they can be mapped: copy, swscale, upload back to the GPU, about 10 ms of main-thread work per 4K frame.
b12c261e Read the dmabuf size with one lseek instead of dup + lseek + close per frame.
Cursor and auto-zoom
eb193001 xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland offers no METADATA cursor mode. A recording that asked for it used to fail with nothing recorded; it now falls back to EMBEDDED.
fd6b5a52 Take pointer positions from Hyprland's IPC (hyprland.rs). With the editable cursor, the helper negotiates HIDDEN and the editor draws the cursor (hide, styles, 3D, click bounce). With the pointer painted in, the samples go to <video>.pointer.json and only place zooms and click sounds.
f2ce222e Poll Hyprland's pointer at a fixed rate, so the 3D cursor no longer jitters on doubled gaps.
c4c97ff7 Find the granted monitor by its size, not by the portal's position. The portal reported (0, 0) for a monitor at (1536, 0), the laptop panel was picked, and every position landed off-screen.
690e9c69 Poll for the system cursor too, so system-cursor takes on a monitor get auto-zoom.
Clicks and HUD
c215ad82 The deb, rpm and pacman packages ship 70-openscreen-pointer.rules, which grants the active session access to mice and touchpads only (uaccess), not keyboards. NixOS module included; the AppImage gets a manual step in the install docs.
fd12234a On Linux the HUD window is now exactly the bar, because Hyprland frames and blurs the transparent reserve. Device settings, the language menu, notices and toasts move to a separate panel window.
Recording controls on Hyprland
54cb530a Restart no longer leaves nothing on screen. It discarded the take and opened a new picker while the portal was still closing the old session; on xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland that close stalls for its 25 s timeout and the picker waits behind it, so the take was gone and no picker appeared. Restart now replays the discarded take's source through a one-shot restore token, and record presses are ignored while a restart is in progress.
3516ed31 The persistent grant that token needs is asked for only under Hyprland. Everywhere else a take keeps the unpersisted grant it had, and Restart asks again. This is a narrow exception to the "no restore token" rule in portal.rs: the token lives in memory only and is used once, for the take just discarded. The grant itself outlives the take: the portal keeps it until the user revokes it, and the app has no way to revoke one, so each Hyprland take can leave a screen-share grant in the portal's store.
bb122d26, 1f05473c The bar opens at the bottom centre, as on Windows and macOS, instead of mid-screen: a Hyprland window rule set before it maps places it, at launch and whenever it is shown again. It is pinned, so a fullscreen or maximized window no longer covers it.
e3687580 The settings panel opens next to the bar, instead of mid-screen and then jumping to it.
452aa9ff Closing Device settings releases the camera and the microphone meter; the hidden panel kept rendering them.
311eaa83 Inside Hyprland's own window frame (its border and corner rounding), the bar and the panel draw square instead of a second, rounder frame.
841fcfcd The countdown draws only its circle: under Hyprland a window rule leaves its transparent window undecorated (no border, blur or shadow), instead of a bordered, blurred box around the number.
All of these apply only when HYPRLAND_INSTANCE_SIGNATURE is set (runsUnderHyprland), except the camera release (all Linux, a plain bug fix) and the Restart press guard (all platforms).
npx tsc --noEmit, npx tsc -p tsconfig.test.json --noEmit, npm run i18n:check: pass. npm run lint: no errors.
npm run test: 5194 tests in 374 files pass (after rebasing onto main at 09ed9a23).
cargo test in electron/native/pipewire-capture: 128 pass, 1 fails. The failure is shim::tests::enum_format_survives_a_dmabuf_only_producer, which fails the same way without these changes; it depends on the modifiers this machine's EGL reports. CI does not run this crate's tests.
Real takes on Hyprland (dev build, helper rebuilt with npm run build:native:linux):
38 s 3840x2160 at 60 fps, LINEAR dmabuf (modifier=0x0) imported on the GPU: encoder vaapi, convertMs 0, uploadMs ~0, encodeMs 0.68, 2 of 1729 frames replaced.
Editable cursor on the 4K monitor of a two-monitor layout: cursor visible and following, hide and 3D cursor work.
Restart three times in a row after one picker answer: each new take started about 0.1 s after the click with the source restored, no picker, and no portal close timeouts in the journal.
HUD placement, sampled from hyprctl clients every 20 ms: the bar maps at the bottom centre from its first frame, under npm run dev and in a built app, and after being hidden and shown again; the settings panel maps next to the bar; both stay visible over a maximized (Super+Alt+F) and a fullscreen (Super+F) window.
Device settings: with the camera toggle off, no process holds /dev/video* after the panel closes.
Not covered: a system-cursor take after 690e9c69 (unit-tested only), the full manual e2e checklist, GNOME, KDE and X11 sessions (the Hyprland-only gating keeps them on the old paths; the rounded HUD was checked with HYPRLAND_INSTANCE_SIGNATURE removed, still on Hyprland), the restore token on any portal backend other than xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland, other compositors, AMD and NVIDIA GPUs, window capture on Hyprland, and installing the packaged udev rule from a built deb, rpm or pacman package.
Linux HUD controls, menus, notices, and toasts now appear in a separate panel beside the recording bar, with improved placement on Hyprland.
Wayland recordings can capture pointer positions when desktop-portal cursor data is unavailable and preserve pointer activity when the cursor is embedded in the video.
Restarting a Linux recording can reuse the previous source without reopening the picker.
Linux packages and the NixOS module configure mouse and touchpad access for click capture.
Improvements
Linux video capture better reflects frame arrival times and can use more processing threads.
Embedded pointer data no longer creates a duplicate cursor overlay.
Wayland display scaling is more consistent.
Documentation
Updated Linux setup guidance, including manual rule installation for AppImage users and the keyboard-access risks of using the input group.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
This PR adds Linux pointer-access packaging, Hyprland pointer polling and telemetry, and a separate Linux HUD panel. It also changes PipeWire frame timing, DMA-BUF handling, and encoding, and sets a default device scale factor for Wayland.
Changes: Linux pointer access
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Pointer rule and package lifecycle build/linux/70-openscreen-pointer.rules, electron-builder.json5, build/linux/after-install.tpl, build/linux/after-remove.tpl
Debian, Arch, and RPM packages include the mouse-and-touchpad udev rule and lifecycle scripts. The scripts also manage executable links, sandbox permissions, MIME and desktop databases, and AppArmor profiles.
The Nix package installs the rule, and the NixOS module registers it with udev. Documentation covers package-managed and manual setup. Tests and package verification check rule configuration and installation.
Linux pointer capture and telemetry
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Hyprland polling and portal negotiation electron/native/pipewire-capture/src/hyprland.rs, electron/native/pipewire-capture/src/portal.rs
Adds Hyprland cursor and monitor queries, coordinate mapping, polling, cursor-mode negotiation, and monitor-only portal selection.
Capture orchestration and negotiated modes electron/native/pipewire-capture/src/main.rs, electron/native-bridge/capture/linuxNativeCaptureSession.ts, electron/native-bridge/capture/linuxNativeCaptureSession.test.ts
The helper can poll for pointer positions, map them to the granted monitor, and emit timestamped move and click samples. The session accepts hidden as a negotiated cursor mode.
System-cursor samples can be stored in a .pointer.json sidecar and marked in the recording session. Telemetry reads fall back to that sidecar, and eligible recordings can set fresh-recording auto-zoom pending.
Cursor tracks identify pointer data loaded from a pointer sidecar. The compositor does not draw another cursor when the pointer is already painted into the captured image.
Linux HUD panel
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Panel state and IPC contract src/components/launch/hudPanel.ts, electron/preload.ts, electron/electron-env.d.ts
Defines panel state and action data and adds IPC methods for state, actions, readiness, and panel dimensions.
On Linux, the HUD sends settings, language menus, notices, and toasts to the panel. The panel renders those surfaces and returns user actions. Linux HUD sizing matches the bar, and panel controls use native tooltips.
Panel lifecycle and placement electron/windows.ts, electron/hyprland.ts, electron/hudWindowBounds.ts
The main process creates and manages the panel, validates IPC senders and size reports, and positions it near the bar. Hyprland placement uses IPC dispatcher fallbacks.
Frames record their arrival time. Capture places fresh frames by arrival slot and uses a two-slot lag for held frames.
DMA-BUF routing and import electron/native/pipewire-capture/csrc/pw_shim.c, electron/native/pipewire-capture/csrc/pw_shim.h, electron/native/pipewire-capture/src/shim.rs, electron/native/pipewire-capture/src/dmabuf_import.rs
Preferred DMA-BUF buffers bypass CPU mapping. The shim adds a buffer-route helper, and imports use the plane descriptor’s allocation size.
Frame copying and encoding electron/native/pipewire-capture/src/shim.rs, electron/native/pipewire-capture/src/encoder.rs
CPU copies use an SSE4.1 path when available, with a plain-copy fallback. The encoder uses sws_scale_frame with a reusable source frame and updated thread-count defaults.
Adds --force-device-scale-factor=1 when X11 is not selected and no scale factor is configured. Tests cover Wayland, Xwayland, and user-provided values.

Evaluate the description once in toHudPanelToasts.
toHudPanelToasts calls toastText(toast.description) twice. The presence check uses the first result and the spread value uses the second. If a function-valued description returns text first and then returns nothing, the toast carries description: undefined, and the panel omits the description. Store the result in a local const description = toastText(toast.description); and use it in both places.

Minor · Gate panel-only rendering on a real panel bridge. · LaunchWindow.tsx:167
On Linux, floatsInPanel depends only on getPlatform(). In browser-shim mode, the shim window.electronAPI has no getPlatform or sendHudPanelState. getPlatform() then falls back to navigator sniffing and returns "linux". Restart the HUD toast timer when a same-ID toast changes content.
HudPanelToastCard restarts its dismissal timer only when id, duration, or type changes. If a producer replaces a toast with the same id, duration, and type, the old timer keeps running and dismisses the replacement at the original expiry. Include the displayed content in the timer's dependencies, without restarting the timer on every snapshot.

Minor · Keep pointer telemetry out of cursorTelemetryPath. · handlers.ts:2861-2866
Keep pointer telemetry out of cursorTelemetryPath.
Registering <video>.pointer.json as cursorTelemetryPath makes the drawable reader return pointer samples as cursor data. Those samples would then be drawn over the pointer already painted into the video. Pointer telemetry needs its own registry field and its own reader fallback.
Relocated system-mode takes lose their pointer data today. readCursorTelemetryFile falls back only to the adjacent ${video}.pointer.json. When that file is missing, the call returns success: true with no samples, so auto-zoom and click sounds lose their input. Registration cannot fix this on its own. A take without a webcam is never registered, and a take with a webcam gets no pointer link.
Use a separate pointerTelemetryPath registry field. Set it when ${videoPath}.pointer.json exists. Have readCursorTelemetryFile read that path after the adjacent file.

Keep pointer telemetry separate from cursor telemetry: update the registration

Update `readCursorTelemetryFile` to try that registered path after the adjacent
pointer file when the adjacent file is missing, preserving the current behavior

electron/native/pipewire-capture/src/main.rs:661-665 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | 💤 Low value
Poll the Hyprland pointer for Embedded requests when the portal offers Metadata.
polls_host_pointer skips polling for an Embedded request when the portal offers Metadata. Embedded yields no portal cursor samples, so the system-cursor take gets no pointer positions for automatic zooms or click sounds. The unit test at main.rs:2066 asserts this behavior, so the fix must update that assertion too. On the Hyprland portal, which offers no Metadata, the path is not reached.

The pre-start pause accrual defect is statically supported at head, but its publication is withheld. The defect is pre_existing and minor, so the attribution rule excludes it from publication. No follow-up comment is posted. The guard and its suggested fix are part of that withheld finding, so they are not posted either.
The missing pause-before-first-stage resumed-index test is a coverage improvement for the same defect. The inspected test account identifies no broken assertion and no explicit testing requirement that the diff violates. The test request is therefore not published as a separate comment. It is withheld with the defect it covers.
The earlier "follow-up" publication line is incorrect. The consistent decision is withheld, and this result reflects that throughout.
Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base 27d9be27bda0); the change keeps it reachable.

The new loop checks the mapping with toContain on the whole deb, pacman or rpm block (line 76). If a future edit moves the string to another key in that block, the test still passes, but the package no longer installs the rule. The built-package probe in scripts/verify-linux-package.sh is the only other check of this mapping. It runs in the build-linux job, which starts only on v* tag pushes and workflow_dispatch. No pull-request workflow runs it, so this test is the only pull-request-time check of the mapping. The current mapping is correct, so this is a coverage gap rather than a current defect. Limit the rule-mapping assertion in the target-block test loop to the `fpm`
array, rather than searching the entire `block`. Extract the array contents and
assert the mapping there, with a useful failure message identifying `target`, so
moving the mapping to another key does not pass the test.
Add an assertion that the pointer rules cover both mice and touchpads.
The test block at scripts/linux-package-scripts.test.mjs:94-104 checks each rule line for the shared prefix, the ID_INPUT_MOUSE or ID_INPUT_TOUCHPAD match, and TAG+="uaccess". It asserts only that the list is nonempty. Deleting either the mouse line or the touchpad line leaves every assertion passing. The install-docs loop also passes, because it checks only the remaining lines and the docs contain both. The shipped rule file is correct, so this is a test coverage gap. A future edit could drop one device class from click access without any test failing.

line: assert that the collected rules include at least one mouse match and at

Assert that both udev calls follow the socket guard.
The template test checks that the guard string and the two udevadm calls exist. It does not check their order. Moving either call above the if line keeps every assertion true, because each call still starts with udevadm and still ends with || true. The current template is correct: both calls sit inside the guarded block. The gap only affects future edits to the template.
The check should cover both commands, not only the reload call.

--reload-rules` and `udevadm trigger --subsystem-match=input --action=change`.
Keep the existing checks that both calls are present and end with `|| true`.
Add a test that pauses after the first stage and asserts resumed frame indices.
The new test never calls pause() or resume(), so paused_total stays zero. A change to the paused-time subtraction in arrival_index would still pass its assertions. The existing pause test checks only advance() return values, not frame indices.
Stage a first frame, then call pause() and resume(). Stage a later frame that arrives after the resume. Assert that its index counts only active time and excludes the paused interval, as elapsed_active does.

Pause the Linux panel toast timer while the pointer is over the card.
The card's timer at HudPanelWindow.tsx:33 dismisses the toast after its duration, even while the pointer is over it. Sonner pauses its timer on hover. A user who hovers a toast near its deadline can lose it before reading it or clicking its action. Pause the timer on onMouseEnter. Resume it with the remaining time on onMouseLeave.

Review comment at @src/components/launch/HudPanelWindow.tsx at line 31:
Update the toast timer in HudPanelWindow so it pauses when the pointer enters
the card and resumes on pointer leave with only the remaining duration,
preserving the existing duration behavior when the card is not hovered.
Restart the card timer for same-ID action-label updates and cover that path in the test.
The replacement-timer test changes only title. A title change alters the card key, so the card remounts and starts a new timer. A same-ID update that changes only actionLabel keeps the key and the timer effect dependencies ([id, duration, type]). The card keeps its existing timeout, so its dismissal deadline does not restart. Sonner reruns its timer for the same update because the update creates a new toast object that its timer effect depends on. For an update without a prior hover pause, Sonner restarts the full duration. The suite does not detect this difference.
Suggested fix and test
Rerun the card timer when the action label changes:
Add this case after the replacement test in src/components/launch/HudPanelWindow.test.tsx. Without the dependency change, it fails against the current card:
+ it("restarts the timer of a toast whose action label changes under the same id", () => {+ vi.useFakeTimers();+ const toast = { id: "upload", type: "default" as const, title: "Uploading", duration: 3000 };+ renderPanel({ ...EMPTY_HUD_PANEL_STATE, toasts: [toast] });++ act(() => vi.advanceTimersByTime(2000));+ act(() => pushState?.({ ...EMPTY_HUD_PANEL_STATE, toasts: [{ ...toast, actionLabel: "Undo" }] }));+ act(() => vi.advanceTimersByTime(2000));+ expect(sentActions).toEqual([]);+ act(() => vi.advanceTimersByTime(1000));+ expect(sentActions).toEqual([{ kind: "toast-dismiss", id: "upload" }]);+ });

Update the toast card timer effect to restart when `toast.actionLabel` changes,
while retaining its existing dependencies. Add a same-ID action-label update
case to the replacement-timer tests in `HudPanelWindow.test.tsx`, verifying that
the toast remains visible after the old deadline and is dismissed after the full

Add a non-default-locale check to the dismiss button test.
The test "names the dismiss button in the app's language" renders in the default locale. It asserts only the English name, Close notification. A close button that hard-codes this English text would still pass, so the test does not detect a localization regression. Before calling renderPanel, store a supported non-English locale under the key that getInitialLocale reads. Then assert the translated actions.closeNotification value from that locale's common.json.

Assert that the udevadm calls precede the closing fi.
The current check requires each udevadm call to follow the guard line, but it sets no upper bound. A template that moves both calls after the closing fi still passes, although the comment above the assertion says the calls are inside the guard. The calls end in || true, so this gap does not make the install fatal. It is a test-coverage gap for behavior that works today.
🐛 Suggested fix

The per-line check at scripts/linux-package-scripts.test.mjs:105 accepts one line that contains both ENV{ID_INPUT_MOUSE}=="1" and ENV{ID_INPUT_TOUCHPAD}=="1". The presence checks at lines 98-100 also accept that line. The shipped rules keep the two predicates on separate lines, so the current rules are correct. A future edit that merges them would tag only devices that report both classes, and this test would still pass.
Publication decision: withheld. The pre_existing attribution meets the exclusion bar, and the finding is a minor test-coverage improvement rather than a must-fix. This supersedes the earlier follow-up header.

Cover the recordingsDir registry-miss path in the pointer fallback test.
The new pointer test at electron/media/cursorSidecar.test.ts:226 calls readCursorActivity(video, {}). With empty options, readCursorSidecar skips the registry lookup at electron/media/cursorSidecar.ts:211. Production passes recordingsDir, so the registry-miss-to-pointer path with recordingsDir set is not exercised. A change that broke the fallback only in that case would not fail the suite. The current behavior is correct: a registry hit returns the registry sidecar, and a miss falls through to the pointer fallback.
Add a case that uses the production options:
Suggested test
+ it("gives the agent the pointer telemetry when recordingsDir is set and the registry misses", async () => {+ const video = path.join(dir, "painted-agent-registry-miss.mp4");+ await fs.writeFile(+ `${video}${POINTER_TELEMETRY_SUFFIX}`,+ JSON.stringify({ samples: [{ timeMs: 10, cx: 0.25, cy: 0.75, interactionType: "click" }] }),+ "utf-8",+ );++ const activity = await readCursorActivity(video, { recordingsDir: dir });++ expect(activity.found).toBe(true);+ expect(activity.source).toBe("pointer");+ });
This test covers the helper with the options that production uses. It does not verify that agentCursorTelemetryReader in electron/ipc/handlers.ts passes those options.

Thanks for the review. On the items in the review body:
hudPanel.ts:129, evaluate the description once: fixed in 6a973ae.
LaunchWindow.tsx:167, panel-only rendering: it now also requires sendHudPanelState, so the browser shim draws the settings itself (6a973ae). Test added.
HudPanelWindow.tsx:27-36, same-id toast timer: the card is keyed on its content, so a replaced toast gets a fresh timer (6a973ae). Test added.
handlers.ts:2861-2866, a separate registry field so a moved take keeps its .pointer.json: agreed it needs its own field and not cursorTelemetryPath. Leaving it for a follow-up.
main.rs:661-665, polling for EMBEDDED where the portal offers METADATA: this doesn't apply on Hyprland, which offers no METADATA, and those portals have no Hyprland IPC to poll. Leaving it.
Nitpicks: in 6a973ae the package-script tests now check the mapping inside fpm, both the mouse and touchpad lines, and that both udevadm calls sit inside the guard. A pause/resume frame-index test is added to capture.rs in dfb078f.
Add a LaunchWindow test that asserts toastCloseLabel after a locale change.
LaunchWindow.tsx sets toastCloseLabel from the translated common namespace. The new panel test injects a translated label directly and never runs that producer. No LaunchWindow test asserts this field. A regression that hardcodes the label or keeps the previous locale's label would leave the LaunchWindow tests passing.
Suggested change: extend the LaunchWindow locale test so it asserts the toastCloseLabel in the last sent hudPanelState after setLocale("fr"). Also rename HudPanelWindow.test.tsx:199. Its current name says the label is "the one the HUD translated," but the test only renders injected state. A name such as "renders the dismiss label from the injected panel state" describes the test accurately.

Extend the LaunchWindow locale-change test to assert that the last sent
hudPanelState has the French toastCloseLabel after setLocale("fr"), covering the
translated value produced by LaunchWindow. Rename the relevant HudPanelWindow
test to clarify that it renders the dismiss label from injected panel state.
Add a later-frame arrival assertion to the pause test.
The pause test checks only the frame staged right after resume(). advance clamps that frame to next_index, so over-subtracted paused time can still stamp it at slot 1 and pass. No other test checks a post-resume frame's arrival slot. Current production arithmetic is not shown to be wrong, so this is a coverage gap.
Add a frame that arrives about 200 ms of active time after the first frame. Derive its expected slot from clocks the test owns and the measured pause interval. Do not call arrival_index, because it uses the same paused_total under test. The assertion allows one slot of rounding slack, so it catches over-subtraction of about two slots or more.

Extend the pause test around `capture.pause()` and `capture.resume()` to stage
and advance a later frame after about 200 ms of active time. Derive its expected
slot range from test-owned timestamps and the measured pause interval, without
calling `arrival_index`, and assert the stamped slot falls within that range
with one slot of rounding slack.
Check a later frame against the epoch clock in the late-first-frame test.
The test checks only the frame right after the late replay, and it asserts only an upper bound. mark_staged sets first_arrival to one slot before epoch, so a correct origin gives a stamp that is one slot ahead of the epoch clock. If the origin moved later, advance would clamp the stamp to next_index. That clamped stamp still passes stamped <= arrival_slot + 1, so the regression goes unnoticed. No other test in this file stages a late first frame, so the path is not covered.
Add a third frame several slots after the second. Check both sides of its stamp against the epoch clock. Allow one slot in each direction, because the origin is one slot early:
assert!(
stamped <= arrival_slot + 1,
"the second frame was stamped at slot {stamped}, ahead of its slot {arrival_slot} \
on the audio's clock"
);
++ // Sleep several slots so the third frame arrives well after the second.+ std::thread::sleep(Duration::from_millis(200));+ let third = Instant::now();+ capture.stage(&frame_at(third)).expect("stage");+ assert_eq!(capture.advance().expect("advance"), 1);+ let third_slot = (third.duration_since(epoch).as_nanos() as i64 * 30) / 1_000_000_000;+ let third_stamp = capture.next_index - 1;+ assert!(+ (third_slot - 1..=third_slot + 1).contains(&third_stamp),+ "the third frame was stamped at slot {third_stamp}, not within one slot of its slot {third_slot} on the audio's clock"+ );
let _ = std::fs::remove_file(&output);
This closes a coverage gap for behavior that works today. It is not a current production failure.

Pushed 7 more commits for the HUD and Restart on Hyprland (56a1b22..9030a1a). The description has a new "Recording controls on Hyprland" section and updated testing notes. Everything new is gated to Hyprland except the camera release when Device settings closes (all Linux) and the guard against a record press during a restart (all platforms).
Document or clear the retained Hyprland screen-share grant.
Each Hyprland take requests PersistMode::ExplicitlyRevoked, so the portal keeps the grant until the user revokes it. Stop, discard, and Restart paths never revoke it. Each persisted take can leave a screen-share grant after its recording ends. The app has no revoke call to remove it, so the fix is a documented trade-off or a follow-up.

Handle a missing source_type in monitor-only Hidden takes.
With Hidden cursor mode and no source_type, host_pointer_origin stays None, so every polled pointer position is dropped. Hidden mode paints no pointer into the frames, and the editor draws only from samples. The recording then has no cursor. The helper warns, but no fallback exists. Consider treating an absent source_type as a monitor when monitors-only was requested. That needs monitors_only in the capture loop, which it is not today.

Reviewing files that changed from the base of the PR and between af84a3e and 9030a1a.
Included review availability: This review used your included allowance. Your plan provides up to 8 included reviews per hour; 7 remain after this review.
On the two follow-ups in the latest CodeRabbit review (of 9030a1a):
Retained Hyprland screen-share grant (portal.rs): documented in ab7db4f, at the PersistMode::ExplicitlyRevoked choice. The grant outlives the take, and stop, discard and Restart do not revoke it, because ScreenCast has no call that can. The app never replays it on its own; only the in-memory token kept for one Restart does. The PR description notes the trade-off too.
Missing source_type in monitor-only Hidden takes (main.rs): not changing this. Hidden mode with positions from Hyprland's IPC is only used under Hyprland, and xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland reports source_type for every stream (it did in every take tested). Treating an absent source_type as a monitor would mean threading monitors_only into the capture loop for a case that does not occur. The helper still warns if it ever does.
Thanks for the countdown fix, @shilai-li. The branch now conflicts with main, so CI can't run on 560b185. Could you rebase onto the latest main (no merge commit, the repo only rebase-merges)? Two CodeRabbit threads are also still open, in capture.rs and HudPanelWindow.tsx: a fix or a short reply on each would settle them.
xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland hands out LINEAR dmabufs, which the helper
maps and copies on the PipeWire thread. The driver maps them
write-combined, so ordinary reads are uncached: on an Intel Arc B390 a
3840x2160 frame took ~100 ms through extend_from_slice (0.33 GB/s).
While the copy ran the compositor ran out of buffers, rebuilt the stream
several times a second ("Out of buffers" in the portal log) and the
recording stuttered at 15-35 fps.
Copy with SSE4.1 streaming loads (MOVNTDQA) instead: ~3.3 ms per 4K
frame (10 GB/s). On ordinary write-back memory a streaming load is a
plain load, so shm and memfd buffers take the same path. CPUs without
SSE4.1 and non-x86 builds keep extend_from_slice.
Capture::advance stamped a fresh frame with current_index(), the clock at
the moment it was encoded. At 4K the ~13 ms of conversion and upload
before that put about half of a steady 60 Hz stream one slot late; the
next frame then found its slot taken and skipped one, so smooth motion
was recorded with 33 ms gaps even though the compositor delivered every
frame on time.
Each frame now carries the instant the PipeWire thread handed it up, and
a fresh frame is written in the slot it arrived in (or the first free
one after it). The held picture a heartbeat re-encodes is stamped two
slots behind the clock, so it can no longer claim the slot a frame
arriving right now belongs in; finish() still stamps the true end.
The helper asked libswscale for threads but converted with sws_scale,
the pointer API, which runs single-threaded whatever the context's
`threads` says. That is why the measurement behind the old default of
one thread saw no difference between one and eight. Only
sws_scale_frame slices the work.
Convert through sws_scale_frame with a source frame that borrows the
captured pixels (no copy), and default to half the CPU's threads, at
most eight. 3840x2160 BGRx->NV12 drops from 7.6 ms/frame on one thread
to 4.0 ms on eight (Core Ultra X7 358H), which leaves a third of the
4K60 frame budget instead of almost none; the output is byte-identical.
OPENSCREEN_LINUX_SWS_THREADS still overrides the count.
The importer left AVDRMFrameDescriptor.objects[0].size at 0 for the
driver to recover from the fd. Intel's iHD driver does not do that for a
LINEAR buffer: vaCreateSurfaces fails with "resource allocation failed"
and av_hwframe_map returns EIO, so every linear frame reaching the GPU
import was refused.
Read the size by seeking a dup of the fd to its end, which is how the
kernel exposes a dmabuf's size, and fall back to 0 if that fails.
Reproduced against a linear 3840x2160 GBM buffer: size 0 fails, the real
size imports.
…TADATA
xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland offers only the HIDDEN and EMBEDDED cursor
modes (AvailableCursorModes = 3). With the HUD on its default editable
cursor, the helper requested METADATA, failed with
cursor-metadata-unsupported, and nothing was recorded at all.
A session that writes video now falls back to EMBEDDED, the mirror of
the existing EMBEDDED -> METADATA fallback for niri (getopenscreen#1357): the
recording gets the system cursor painted in rather than no recording. A
cursor-only session has no frames to paint into, so it keeps METADATA
and is still refused. handlers.ts records the mode actually negotiated,
so the editor treats such a take as system-cursor instead of drawing a
second cursor over the painted one.
xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland offers no METADATA cursor mode, so Hyprland
takes had no cursor positions: no auto-zoom, no editor-drawn cursor.
Hyprland's own IPC reports the pointer, so the capture helper now takes
positions from there (hyprland.rs), polled at the sample cadence.
- Editable cursor requested: the helper negotiates HIDDEN and limits the
picker to monitors, and the editor draws the cursor from these samples
(.cursor.json), so hide, styles and click bounce work. Windows are left
out because the portal does not say which window was shared.
- The granted monitor's position and scale come from Hyprland's monitor
list: the portal reports its size in physical pixels, which halved
every position on a scale-2 monitor.
- A take with the pointer painted in (EMBEDDED) keeps its samples in
<video>.pointer.json, which feeds auto-zoom and click sounds but is
never drawn. The compositor falls back to it for auto focus and marks
the track painted-in so it draws no second cursor.
- Clicks come from the existing evdev reader, which now also runs for
these sessions.
The poller slept a full interval after each query, so its period drifted
past the sample interval, and the loop then dropped any position that
came in under it: about one gap in three was doubled, and a fast move
jumped twice as far in one step, which made the 3D cursor jitter.
The poller now runs at a fixed rate and stamps each position when it is
taken, every poll becomes a sample, and the idle heartbeat stays off
while Hyprland supplies positions. Measured on a real take: 371 of 373
gaps at 33 ms, none longer.
On Wayland the HUD's transparent reserve cannot be made click-through, and
Hyprland frames and blurs it, so the bar showed inside a large glass box.
- The Linux HUD window is now exactly the bar. Device settings, the
language menu, notices and toasts move to a separate panel window
(hudPanel.ts, HudPanelWindow.tsx) that the HUD drives over IPC.
- The bar's tooltips use native title tooltips on Linux, which Chromium
draws outside the window, so no tooltip room is reserved.
- HUD_WINDOW_MIN drops to 40x40 so the floor no longer pads a bar-sized
window; elsewhere the window is always far larger.
- On Wayland, force Chromium's device scale factor to 1: it folded the
desktop's text-scaling factor into windows that size themselves and
painted their page into only part of the window.
- On Hyprland, place the panel next to the bar through its IPC, since the
compositor centres every new floating window over the bar.
The capture helper reads left-button presses from /dev/input, whose nodes
are root:input. The `input` group would open keyboards too, to every
program the user runs. The deb, rpm and pacman packages now install
70-openscreen-pointer.rules, which has systemd-logind grant the active
local session access to mice and touchpads only (`uaccess`), and reload
udev so it reaches devices already plugged in.
- The install/remove scripts are electron-builder's own templates with
the udev reload appended; a test fails if they drift from upstream.
- NixOS: the package installs the rule and the module adds it to
services.udev.packages. Home Manager cannot install udev rules.
- AppImage: the docs give the one-time manual install.
- The helper's warning now points at the rule instead of the input group.
A dmabuf was routed to the VA-API import only when it could not be
mmap'd, which is the tiled case. xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland hands out
LINEAR buffers, which map, so every frame took the CPU route even with
the importer available: a streaming copy out of write-combined memory,
swscale to NV12, and an upload back to the GPU, about 10 ms of
main-thread work per 4K frame.
With prefer_dmabuf set, osc_on_add_buffer now leaves every dmabuf
unmapped and latches the import, as it already did for a tiled one.
Shared memory, machines without the import, and a forced software
encoder keep the CPU path.
Measured on a 38 s 3840x2160 take (Arc B390, Hyprland): convertMs 0,
uploadMs ~0, encodeMs 0.68, encoder vaapi, 2 of 1729 frames replaced.
dmabuf_size dup'd the plane fd, seeked the dup to its end and closed it,
three syscalls per imported frame. The dup isolated nothing: it shares
the open file description, offset included. Seek the plane's own fd
through a borrowed File instead.
The granted monitor was matched by the portal's position first.
xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland reported (0, 0) for a 4K monitor placed at
(1536, 0), which is where the laptop panel sat, so the panel was picked
and every pointer position landed past its right edge: the editable
cursor was never visible and there was nothing to zoom on.
Match by size first, and use the position only to tell two monitors of
the same size apart or when no size matches.
The helper polled Hyprland's pointer only when the editable cursor was
asked for, so a take with the system cursor painted in had no positions
and therefore no auto-zoom or click sounds.
Poll for the system cursor (EMBEDDED) too. The app already keeps those
samples apart in <video>.pointer.json, which places zooms and click
sounds and is never drawn over the painted pointer. A HIDDEN request
still gets no positions, and nothing is polled where the portal reports
the pointer itself.
…or its crop
Arrival slots counted from the first frame's arrival and the audio from
the epoch, when that frame was staged. A window's first frame can be
replayed after waiting up to MAX_CROP_WAIT for its crop, so every later
frame landed that far ahead of the audio and the file ran that much
longer than the take.
Clamp the first arrival to at most one slot before the epoch. A frame
delivered normally keeps its own arrival as zero, which is what places
frames in the slot they arrived in; a late replay no longer moves the
video. A test stages a first frame 400 ms late: without the fix the next
frame lands in slot 12.
Also bracket the held-picture assertion's clock read, which could fail
when a slot boundary fell between two reads, and add a test that frames
after a pause are placed by active time.
- The socket has to answer a cursorpos query before it counts. It
decides HIDDEN, and a HIDDEN take with no positions has no cursor
anywhere.
- Forget the last position when the poll is lost, so a later click is
not recorded there and does not place a zoom on it.
- Warn once at stream start when the portal does not say what kind of
source it shared; those takes dropped every sample in silence.
- CursorTrack::smoothed dropped the painted_in marker on its early
return, so with cursor smoothing off a system-cursor take drew a
second cursor over the one in the video.
- The Linux webcam attach rebuilt the session without pointerTelemetry;
it now sets it when the take's .pointer.json exists.
- The agent's cursor reader falls back to .pointer.json through a new
readCursorActivity, as the editor's reader already does.
- Mirrored toasts default to the app toaster's 3000 ms, shared as
TOAST_DURATION_MS, restart their timer when replaced under the same
id, read a function-valued description once, and label the dismiss
button in the app's language.
- The panel goes below the bar only when it fits there or has more
room, is repositioned on every resize on X11, is shown again with the
bar while it has content, and is only used where a panel bridge exists
(the browser shim also reads as Linux).
- Docs: on NixOS a mouse already plugged in gets the rule after a
replug or a reboot.
- The package-script tests check the mapping inside fpm, both device
classes, and that the udevadm calls sit inside their guard.
- The pause test measured its bound from the first frame, so a slow
first encode could eat into it. Measure from the active clock just
before the pause.
- The late-first-frame test accepted slot 2, one slot past what the
clamp allows, so a clamp that drifted one slot further still passed.
Bound it by the second frame's arrival slot on the epoch's clock.
The panel window's own i18n reads the locale once, so after a language
change in the HUD its toasts kept the old dismiss label. The HUD now
sends the translated label in the panel state, as it already does for
every other string the panel shows.
Restart discarded the take, then started a fresh portal session whose
picker opened while the portal was still closing the discarded one. On
Hyprland that close stalls for its full 25 s timeout and the picker waits
behind it, so nothing appeared and the take was already gone; a record
press in that gap spawned helpers that timed out before `ready`.
The helper now asks for a persistent grant and reports its restore token
on `source-selected`. Main keeps the discarded take's token in memory and
hands it back only to the start Restart marks with `restart`, once, so the
same source is shared again with no picker. A fresh recording never gets a
token and is always asked.
Record presses are also ignored while a restart is in flight: `recording`
is cleared before the next take is asked for, so the button was live.
…prland
Hyprland centres every new floating window and ignores the position a
Wayland client asks for, so the bar sat mid-screen instead of at the
bottom centre where Windows and macOS put it. It is now moved there over
Hyprland's IPC when it is shown and after each resize, which Hyprland
anchors at the top-left; the panel follows it.
`alwaysOnTop` means nothing on Wayland either, so a maximized or
fullscreen window (Omarchy's Super+Alt+F, Super+F) covered the bar. The
bar and the panel are pinned as they are placed, which keeps them above
it and on every workspace.
On Linux the device settings are drawn in the HUD's panel window, which
was hidden when it emptied without being sent the empty state. A hidden
panel still renders its last snapshot, so the settings stayed mounted and
kept the camera preview and the microphone meter open after closing, even
with the camera toggle off. The empty state is now sent before the panel
hides, which unmounts them as closing does on Windows and macOS.
The panel is a window of its own, shown each time a popover opens, and
Hyprland centres a new window: it was seen opening mid-screen and then
jumping to the bar. Before it is shown, a named window rule set over
Hyprland's IPC now maps it floating at its size beside the bar. On
Hyprland it waits ~80 ms for its size to settle first, since the device
list loads after the first measurement and grows it. It is still pinned
after it maps, as the bar is: pinned by the rule at map time, it stayed
under a fullscreen window. The move after it maps stays as the fallback
for a Hyprland without Lua.
Restart replays the discarded take's grant so it raises no second picker,
which on Hyprland stalls behind the portal closing the previous session.
That needs a grant that outlives the helper, and every take asked for one
on every Linux desktop: an entry in the portal's permission store per take,
and a request no other backend was tested with.
The helper now asks for it only when the request sets `persistGrant`, and
main sets it only under Hyprland (`runsUnderHyprland`). Everywhere else a
take keeps the unpersisted grant it always had, and Restart asks again.
Hyprland frames every window, frameless or not, with the desktop's border
and corner rounding (2 px and 6 px on Omarchy). Inside that frame the bar
drew its own 17 px pill and the panel its rounded, padded cards, so two
mismatched corners showed at each edge.
Where Hyprland runs, main passes the bar's and the panel's windows
`--hud-framed-by-compositor`, and they render square and flat inside the
compositor's frame: no outer radius, border or shadow, and no padding
around the panel's cards. A toast keeps its coloured stripe. Every other
desktop draws nothing around a frameless window and keeps the rounded
look, as do Windows and macOS.
Hyprland centres a new window, so the bar opened mid-screen and was seen
moving to the bottom a moment later, at launch and each time it was shown
again after being hidden.
Under Hyprland the bar's window now has a fixed title, and before it is
shown a named window rule set over Hyprland's IPC maps it floating at the
bottom centre of the monitor it opens on, at its size. The rule follows
every resize, for the next show. The first show waits for the renderer to
report the bar's size, bounded from ready-to-show rather than from window
creation: under the dev server the page took longer than the bound to
load and the bar mapped at its creation size, its top mid-screen. The move
and pin after mapping stay as the fallback. Elsewhere the window keeps the
page's title and shows as before.
- Run bar and panel placements one at a time. Each decides whether to pin
from its own `clients` snapshot and pinning toggles, so two overlapping
placements could both toggle and leave the window unpinned, under a
fullscreen window again. A test with a slow, stateful fake socket fails
without the serialization.
- Do not reveal the panel when the bar was hidden while the panel waited
for its placement; the bar's show handler brings it back.
- Report no panel size before there is content to show: the root is then
only its padding, and main showed that as a small empty square.
- Document that a persisted Hyprland grant outlives its take: the portal
keeps it until the user revokes it, and nothing in the app can.
The countdown is a transparent window that draws only its circle, and
Hyprland framed and blurred its whole rectangle: a bordered, blurred box
around the number. Under Hyprland the window now has a fixed title, and
when it is created a named rule over Hyprland's IPC leaves it undecorated
(no border, blur or shadow), the same rule Omarchy gives an installer that
draws its own chrome. Elsewhere it is unchanged.
- The pause test bounded the post-resume frame by one slot past the clock
read before the pause, so a resume or encode slower than a slot failed
it even with the pause excluded. It now bounds the frame by the active
clock measured after it, and checks separately that the clock left the
pause out.
- A toast replaced under the same id with identical content kept its
running timer, and the toast it replaced dismissed it early; sonner
gives a replacement its full duration. Each toast now carries a
revision, new whenever sonner publishes it again (useSonner builds a
new object per publish), and the panel restarts the timer on it.
Rebased onto main at 09ed9a2, no merge commit, so CI can run again. Two conflicts, both with the new update button: LaunchWindow.tsx (one of my commits had re-indented the HUD's control block; the update button, useUpdateBadge and applyUpdate are carried over unchanged) and preload.ts (two adjacent imports, both kept). Across the rebase the branch's tree differs from before only by main's own changes. Both remaining CodeRabbit threads are answered, fixed in 5bd8a66, and the commit IDs in the description now point at the rebased commits.

NixOS module included; the AppImage gets a manual step in the install docs.fd12234aOn Linux the HUD window is now exactly the bar, because Hyprland frames and blurs the transparent reserve. Device settings, the language menu, notices and toasts move to a separate panel window.Recording controls on Hyprland
54cb530aRestart no longer leaves nothing on screen. It discarded the take and opened a new picker while the portal was still closing the old session; on xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland that close stalls for its 25 s timeout and the picker waits behind it, so the take was gone and no picker appeared. Restart now replays the discarded take's source through a one-shot restore token, and record presses are ignored while a restart is in progress.3516ed31The persistent grant that token needs is asked for only under Hyprland. Everywhere else a take keeps the unpersisted grant it had, and Restart asks again. This is a narrow exception to the "no restore token" rule inportal.rs: the token lives in memory only and is used once, for the take just discarded. The grant itself outlives the take: the portal keeps it until the user revokes it, and the app has no way to revoke one, so each Hyprland take can leave a screen-share grant in the portal's store.bb122d26,1f05473cThe bar opens at the bottom centre, as on Windows and macOS, instead of mid-screen: a Hyprland window rule set before it maps places it, at launch and whenever it is shown again. It is pinned, so a fullscreen or maximized window no longer covers it.e3687580The settings panel opens next to the bar, instead of mid-screen and then jumping to it.452aa9ffClosing Device settings releases the camera and the microphone meter; the hidden panel kept rendering them.311eaa83Inside Hyprland's own window frame (its border and corner rounding), the bar and the panel draw square instead of a second, rounder frame.841fcfcdThe countdown draws only its circle: under Hyprland a window rule leaves its transparent window undecorated (no border, blur or shadow), instead of a bordered, blurred box around the number. All of these apply only when
HYPRLAND_INSTANCE_SIGNATUREis set (runsUnderHyprland), except the camera release (all Linux, a plain bug fix) and the Restart press guard (all platforms).Related issue
