Summary

On Xfce/X11, the Linux helper is installed but org.freedesktop.portal.ScreenCast is absent. Recording currently selects the portal path solely because the helper exists, clears the selected source, and fails before capture.

Add a direct X11 backend to the Linux helper. It captures the selected display/window, reads editable cursor sprites with XFixes and mouse buttons with XInput2, and reuses the existing H.264/audio encoder, pause/resume protocol, sidecars and export pipeline. The main process resolves the selected source and retains the in-app/CLI picker on X11. A nonzero helper exit is reported as a failed take even when the encoder finalized a playable partial file. The CLI also removes its source-index --display switch from Chromium’s command line before GTK initializes, so it does not override the X server connection. Wayland, including sessions with an XWayland DISPLAY, continues to use the portal.

Recorded an isolated GTK window using the actual CLI and OS mouse events, then exported a styled MP4 with --auto-zoom. The capture contained 301 cursor samples, seven clicks and four cursor sprites. Export generated one zoom region; 158 of 360 rendered frames differed from the identical export without zoom. The final packaged AppImage was also exercised on an isolated X11 desktop: explicit --display 0 capture (309 cursor samples, three clicks), window capture (325 samples, three clicks), and an unmapped-window failure check. Packaged CLI auto-zoom export also passed at 1080p30. Detailed coverage is recorded in the manual E2E checklist.

Testing

Fork CI passed on 5276c21e: https://github.com/NatanPimentel/openscreen/actions/runs/39078857449. The final interruption/display fixes in 90f61a59 passed the local checks and final AppImage E2E below; GitHub has not started another fork push run for that commit.

  • Full Vitest suite: 351 files / 4,922 tests passed (--maxWorkers=4); updated targeted slice: 65 tests passed. One earlier parallel run hit an existing windows.test.ts mock/timer error (win.isVisible); the complete rerun passed without changing that test.
  • Linux native helper: 104 Rust tests passed, one existing test ignored; release build and non-interactive X11 probe passed.
  • Application and test TypeScript checks; Biome; documentation checks; Vite production build passed.
  • Website production build passed for English and all seven translations.
  • Installed AppImage CLI recording without a ScreenCast portal (window and explicit monitor selection), editable cursor/click sidecar, rejected interrupted take, and CLI auto-zoom export: H.264/AAC, 1624×1080, 30 fps, 12.033 seconds, decoded successfully.

Current scope: resizing/unmapping the selected window ends the take with an error; monitor capture with mixed scale factors is rejected explicitly rather than guessing coordinates (window capture remains available). Wayland, Windows and macOS were not manually exercised. Computer-use MCP was unavailable; the Linux CLI slice used real XTest mouse input, not injected DOM clicks.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Linux/X11 can capture a selected display or window directly when no ScreenCast portal responds. Recordings support cursor customization and mouse-click data.
    • Linux/Wayland and X11 sessions with a responding portal continue to use PipeWire and the portal picker, with its existing source-selection requirements.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Failed capture-helper exits now cause pending and subsequent recording stops to report failure rather than treating incomplete output as successful.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified X11 and Wayland capture requirements, including PipeWire for system audio and evdev access for Wayland cursor-click capture.

Walkthrough

Linux recording now supports direct X11 capture alongside PipeWire portal capture. Backend detection and source routing distinguish X11 from Wayland and portal-responsive X11 sessions. The helper reports its backend. The README and CLI documentation describe the platform-specific behavior.

Changes: Linux Capture

Layer / File(s) Summary
Backend selection and source routing
src/lib/nativeLinuxRecording.ts, electron/recording/linuxCaptureBackend.ts, electron/ipc/handlers.ts, electron/electron-env.d.ts, electron/main.ts, src/lib/nativeLinuxRecording.test.ts, electron/recording/linuxCaptureBackend.test.ts
Backend detection identifies X11 or PipeWire. X11 source resolution and IPC routing preserve app-side source selection for X11 and portal-owned selection for PipeWire. Linux record CLI runs remove Electron’s display switch. Tests cover backend selection and source resolution.
Capture session request and backend events
electron/native-bridge/capture/linuxNativeCaptureSession.ts, electron/native/pipewire-capture/src/events.rs, electron/native/pipewire-capture/src/main.rs, electron/native/pipewire-capture/src/portal.rs
The helper request can include an explicit X11 source. The helper distinguishes an unavailable portal from other portal errors, selects direct X11 capture or continues through PipeWire, and includes the backend in its ready event.
Native X11 capture runtime
electron/native/pipewire-capture/Cargo.toml, electron/native/pipewire-capture/src/x11.rs
The helper adds direct X11 capture for selected displays or windows, with frame capture, cursor handling, mouse-button events, recording controls, and finalization. Tests cover session detection, bounds, clipping, and cursor rendering.
Capture requirements and validation record
README.md, technical-documentation/testing/manual-e2e-checklist.md, website/docs/cli.md, website/i18n/*/docusaurus-plugin-content-docs/current/cli.md
Documentation distinguishes native X11 capture from Wayland portal capture. The manual results log records X11 capture and export checks and notes untested coverage.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(linux): support X11 recording without a ScreenCast portal" matches the main change. The PR adds a direct X11 capture backend to the Linux helper for X11 sessions where the ScreenCast portal is absent, and the description and objectives confirm this as the primary purpose. The title is concise, uses a conventional commit prefix, and names the platform and the behavior change. It does not cover secondary changes such as the CLI --display fix or the partial-take failure handling, which is acceptable.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's main sections: Summary, Related issue, Type of change, Release impact, Desktop impact, Screenshots / video, and Testing. The Summary explains the problem (Xfce/X11 with the helper installed but no ScreenCast portal) and the fix (a direct X11 backend). The Related issue section gives reproduction details but no issue number, and it omits the required 'Fixes #' line. Type, release, and desktop impact are checked. Screenshots and testing are detailed. The description does not state a release note decision beyond Patch, and the 'Fixes #' line is left blank. These gaps are non-critical, so the check passes.

Thanks, this is a solid piece of work and the Xfce case is real. Some things need to change before we can take it:

  1. Backend choice ignores the portal. The title says "without a ScreenCast portal", but linuxCaptureBackend.ts:6 / x11.rs:41 switch every X11 session to direct capture, including ones where the portal works today. Those users lose dmabuf and GPU encoding. Please only take the X11 path when the portal is actually unavailable.
  2. Performance. Each frame is a full GetImage over the X socket, synchronous with encoding (x11.rs:209): roughly 250 MB/s at 1080p30 and ~1 GB/s at 4K. Please use MIT-SHM (x11rb has the shm feature) and share cadence, dropped frames and CPU numbers at 1080p and 4K. We don't merge capture changes without before/after measurements.
  3. Window capture. GetImage on the window drawable (x11.rs:205) fails with BadMatch as soon as the window extends past the screen edge, and obscured areas are undefined without a compositor. Capturing the root over the window's translated rectangle, clipped to the screen, avoids the error and gives what is actually on screen.
  4. Wayland behaviour change. linuxNativeCaptureSession.ts:174 now rejects any non-zero exit even after capture-stopped. On Wayland the helper exits 1 after a finalized file on several mid-take errors, and those partial takes used to be kept. Please scope this to X11, or keep (salvage) the finalized file.
  5. Minor: clicks made during the countdown are emitted at the start of the take (x11.rs:99); typo "Linux/Wayland/Wayland" in the French cli.md:84.

The branch also conflicts with main, and #1275 (cursor telemetry across pauses) just landed there, touching the same linuxNativeCaptureSession.ts and handlers.ts. Could you rebase onto current main, and consider splitting the CLI --display fix and the exit-code change into their own PRs?

Hi @NatanPimentel, friendly ping on this one. The review from Oct 19 still stands (portal first, then X11 only as a fallback; MIT-SHM and a perf measure; window capture; Wayland exit path), and the branch now conflicts with main, so it needs a rebase too. Are you still planning to pick it up? No rush, just let us know either way.

Review follow-up for getopenscreen#1328.

- Direct X11 capture only when the ScreenCast portal does not answer on an
  X11 session. The helper decides and reports it as `backend` on `ready`;
the main process asks it once per process, and never on Wayland.
- Frames come through a server-created MIT-SHM segment instead of the X
socket, with plain GetImage kept for servers that cannot share memory.
- Window capture reads the root over the window rectangle, clipped to the
screen: no BadMatch past the edge, and covered areas show what is on screen.
- A non-zero helper exit after `capture-stopped` keeps the finalized file
  again, as on Wayland.
- Clicks made during the countdown are dropped, and the French CLI page
  loses its doubled "Wayland".

Hi @NatanPimentel, we picked this up to get it over the line. Thanks a lot for the work, the X11 backend itself is solid and stays yours.

Rebased onto main (your three commits kept), plus one follow-up commit for the Oct 19 review:

  • Portal first: direct X11 capture only when the ScreenCast portal does not answer on an X11 session. The helper decides and reports backend on ready. Wayland never probes.
  • MIT-SHM for frames, with plain GetImage as a fallback.
  • Window capture reads the root over the window rectangle, clipped to the screen (no more BadMatch at the edge).
  • Exit code: a finalized partial take is kept again, as on Wayland.
  • Countdown clicks dropped, French typo fixed.

Bench under Xvfb, before → after: 1080p30 from 25.6 to 28.1 fps, 4K from 8.2 to 14.9 fps (software encoder, so encoder-bound). A window past the screen edge now records instead of failing. Still to do: a pass on real hardware, both X11 and the portal path.

Minor · Stamp click samples when the drain reads them, not at emission. · x11.rs:520-615

electron/native/pipewire-capture/src/x11.rs:520-615
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | 💤 Low value

Stamp click samples when the drain reads them, not at emission.

Each click or mouseup sample takes timestamp_ms() at emission (x11.rs:555-564), after the frame work for that iteration. The lag from press to stamp is therefore the press-to-drain gap plus that frame work. The stated one-interval bound does not hold when frame work takes longer than the interval. The loop resets next_frame instead of catching up, so the loop period grows toward the processing time. Under slow encoding, the lag can exceed one interval.

Stamping each button event inside the drain loop removes the post-drain frame work from the lag. Two presses drained in one iteration still get separate stamps. Those stamps can share a millisecond because timestamp_ms() has millisecond resolution.

The XInput time field is X server time, not the UNIX-epoch clock that timestamp_ms() uses. Mapping that field to helper time needs an offset that this code does not establish, so this fix does not use it. Raw button events also carry no root coordinates, so the fix does not use them.

Test the default probe's failure path.

The backend tests never reach the default probeHelper. The X11 tests inject probe, and the Wayland and no-helper tests return before any probe runs. A change to the execFile error or timeout handling therefore passes the suite. The probe result is cached for the process, so a wrong result for a failed probe would also persist for the session.

Mock node:child_process in this test file, keeping the other exports. Then assert the failed-probe result. The sketch below assumes "pipewire" is the intended result. Confirm that intent before merging.

Review follow-up for getopenscreen#1328.

- Direct X11 capture only when the ScreenCast portal does not answer on an
  X11 session. The helper decides and reports it as `backend` on `ready`;
the main process asks it once per process, and never on Wayland.

21-27: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Poor tradeoff

Cover the Linux probe reset in the failed prepare and start handlers.

The reset calls in electron/ipc/handlers.ts at line 2722 (prepare-native-linux-recording catch) and line 2823 (start-native-linux-recording catch) have no test coverage. The new test at electron/recording/linuxCaptureBackend.test.ts:21-30 calls resetLinuxCaptureBackendProbe() itself, so it passes whether or not the handler calls exist. electron/ipc/recordingStateRouting.test.ts scans the handler bodies for setAppRecording(...), but it does not check for the reset. Removing either reset call would leave the suite passing.

A test that fails a prepare or start, then retries the probe, would detect this regression. A source-based assertion in recordingStateRouting.test.ts that both handler bodies contain the reset call is a lighter option. This is a coverage gap, not a current production defect.

Limit Unavailable to a missing ScreenCast interface.

Screencast::new() can also fail on a session-bus connection error. That error surfaces as ashpd::Error::Zbus. offered_cursor_modes and negotiate both pass every Screencast::new() error through portal_unavailable, which returns PortalError::Unavailable. On an X11 session, main.rs treats Unavailable as "no portal" and runs x11::run. A session-bus failure therefore switches the take to X11 capture without reporting the portal error. If X11 capture also fails, only x11-capture-failed with the X11 error text is reported. The original portal error is dropped. If X11 capture succeeds, the portal error is never reported.

Map only the missing-interface case to Unavailable. Keep other Screencast::new() construction errors as failed("ScreenCast", ...) so their portal error text is kept. Check how ashpd reports an absent portal frontend before choosing the match. Do not match every ashpd error variant. An X11 session without a portal must still fall back to X11 capture.

Make XInput 2 setup optional in Desktop::open.

On an X server without the XInput 2 extension and with no ScreenCast portal, the unconditional xinput_xi_query_version(2, 0) and xinput_xi_select_events(...) calls in Desktop::open can fail. Their errors propagate through ?. The X11 probe then fails before it emits ready. The helper reports pipewire, so the app offers no X11 source. A recording that starts without an explicit source fails at the source check in x11.rs before the XInput calls run.

Gating these calls on cursor_mode.reports_cursor() does not fix the probe. The probe sends no cursorMode, so it uses metadata, and reports_cursor() is true for that mode.

Make the XInput 2 steps non-fatal. If the version query or the button-event subscription fails, skip the subscription and continue. The video path and the ready event do not depend on XInput 2. Without it, the take records no click events.

Validate the window visual masks before reading its pixmap as BGRX.

redirect checks only that the server has a 32-bit pixmap format at the window's depth. It never reads the window's visual. A window with a non-BGRX visual, such as a 10-bit depth-30 TrueColor visual, passes this check. Its pixels are then tagged video_format_bgrx and encoded with wrong colors. The root visual already has this check at x11.rs:195-206. Apply the same mask check to the selected window's visual, using get_window_attributes(window_id).visual, or refuse the window with an error.

Return the audio-unavailable warning to the recording user.

When PipeWire fails to load, the X11 helper now saves a video-only take and emits only a warning event. The Linux session logs that event with console.warn. The start and stop IPC results carry no warning field, so the user gets no notice and can save a take without the requested audio. Store this warning in LinuxNativeCaptureSession and return it in the start or stop result, as the macOS path does with nativeMacRecordingWarning.
