Closes #134.

Deploys docs/ from CI: release tags to GitHub Pages (drfed.org), main to Cloudflare Pages (canary.drfed.org), and pull requests to Cloudflare Pages previews. DEPLOY.md covers the setup and the move of drfed.org.

You can preview the deployed page from here.

Choices

  • The Cloudflare project uses Direct Upload with no Git integration, so Cloudflare cannot build or deploy around the CI gates.
  • Ordering follows the last successful docs deployment, which is recorded as a GitHub deployment, rather than npm dist-tags. publish does not depend on the docs jobs, and a late or re-run older build must not roll a site back. latest and next share SemVer order, so a stable patch released after a higher prerelease is skipped with a warning.
  • Previews run through workflow_run from the default branch, and forks take the same path. Credentials never reach PR code. The PR is found by its head and never from artifact contents.
  • Wrangler is a task-level mise tool, not a project dependency. The deploy jobs install only Node.js and Wrangler, with repository hooks and dependency preparation off, before any step that gets a secret. This keeps deploy tooling out of contributor installs and the npm publish job.
  • Builds containing _worker.js, _routes.json, or functions/ are refused, because Cloudflare Pages would run them as code.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3c0dd

The deployment automation shows no established functional problem. Run the Markdown formatter on DEPLOY.md to fix the heading-style lint before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3c0dd

The inspected design separates untrusted pull-request builds from deployment credentials and constrains preview deployment targets. No introduced security defect was established. Residual risk depends on deployment-account permissions, repository settings, and the manual domain migration, which cannot be confirmed from source alone.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — PR authors control preview static content, including browser-side behavior, but the inspected workflow fixes the deployment branch to pr-number and does not expose a production-target selector. The recommended Cloudflare credential grants account-level Pages Edit authority, so credential compromise could exceed one preview; the token's actual resource restriction was not available.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The privileged preview workflow uses default-branch orchestration rather than checking out PR code. Its GitHub token is limited to content and action reads plus pull-request writes; Cloudflare credentials are supplied only to deployment. Downloaded files remain outside the checkout. The deployment helper rejects Cloudflare executable entries, validates project, branch, and SHA, and invokes Wrangler without a shell while stripping GitHub tokens.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — A completed preview upload is not rolled back when later comment publication fails, and the inspected workflow contains no preview deletion step. This leaves externally visible content independent of comment success. It was not retained as a security concern because previews are intentionally public and no resulting privilege expansion was established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Document who owns preview retention and how out-of-band public-site rollback must update ordering records. Before enabling deployment, verify Cloudflare token resource restrictions, protection of deployment URL variables, and which principals can write deployment statuses. These are operational hardening proposals, not established vulnerabilities.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The PR implements the coding requirements in #134. The workflows build and deploy docs/.vitepress/dist/ for release tags, main, and pull request previews. The release and canary paths use deployment ordering and CI gates. The preview workflow uses workflow_run, matches the pull request by commit and repository data, and limits credentials to trusted deployment steps. scripts/docs-deploy.mts validates static output and rejects Cloudflare executable content. VitePress enables cleanUrls, reciprocal links, the changelog inclusion, repository and fediverse links, and the Buttondown form. DEPLOY.md documents service configuration, credentials, DNS, preview handling, and migration. The remaining domain migration and repository archival actions are operational tasks, not coding requirements for this assessment.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed files remain within the scope of #134. Workflow and deployment-script changes implement gated release, canary, and preview deployments. Tests cover deployment ordering, preview selection, output validation, retries, and failure handling. VitePress theme, configuration, changelog, styling, and newsletter changes implement the requested site migration. README, CONTRIBUTING, DEPLOY.md, and changelog updates document or record the same work. No unrelated product behavior is identified.

Turn the VitePress site into the public DrFed website. Enable clean
URLs, add a changelog page that includes the Sacho-materialized
CHANGES.md, add the hackers.pub profile next to the GitHub link, and
port the Buttondown subscription form from the old drfed.org site to
the landing page. A build-time EXTRA_NAV_TEXT/EXTRA_NAV_LINK pair adds
the link to the other public site; setting only one of them fails the
build. Tighten the navigation bar between 768 and 1279 pixels so the
extra links still fit. The hackers.pub symbol is CC BY-SA 4.0 and is
attributed in the SVG and the footer.

The maintainer asked for the #134 plan to be carried out. Claude Code
implemented the site changes with parallel subagents, checked the built
output and headless-browser screenshots in light and dark themes and at
several widths, and had the change reviewed by independent subagents.

Add docs-current and docs-record to the release script. A successful
documentation deployment records a GitHub deployment in the
docs-release or docs-canary environment. Before deploying, a build
compares itself with the last successful record: release builds by
SemVer across the latest and next channels, main builds by workflow run
number. An older build is skipped with a warning annotation, so a late
or re-run job cannot roll a public site back. Release builds also check
that the tag still points at the built commit. Malformed records fail
closed, and record writes retry transient GitHub failures without
creating a second successful record.

Extend the release fixtures with the ordering, pagination, malformed
record, retry, and moved-tag cases.

The maintainer asked for the #134 plan to be carried out. Claude Code
implemented the commands and fixtures with subagents, mutation-tested
the fixtures, and had the logic reviewed and adversarially verified by
independent subagents.

Build docs/ in every main workflow run and upload it as an artifact.
Release tags deploy it to GitHub Pages after github-release succeeds.
Main pushes deploy it to the Cloudflare Pages production branch after
check, test, and the dev npm publication succeed. Pull requests get a
Cloudflare Pages preview from the new docs-preview workflow, which runs
on workflow_run from the default branch, never checks out pull request
code, finds the pull request by its head, requires the docs job of the
latest attempt to have succeeded, and keeps one preview comment
current. Same-repository and fork pull requests take the same path, so
deployment credentials never reach untrusted code.

Wrangler is a task-level mise tool of docs:deploy rather than a project
dependency, so contributor installs and the npm publishing job never
download it. The deploy jobs install only Node.js and Wrangler, with
repository hooks and dependency preparation disabled, before any step
that receives a secret. docs:deploy refuses a build containing
_worker.js, _routes.json, or functions/, which Cloudflare Pages would
run as code, and never passes the attacker-controlled commit message.

The maintainer asked for the #134 plan to be carried out and chose to
keep Wrangler out of the project dependencies. Claude Code implemented
the workflows, tasks, and helper scripts with subagents, checked the
GitHub API behavior against real fork and same-repository pull
requests, simulated the deploy jobs with fresh mise state on mise
2026.6.10 through 2026.10.11, and had the result reviewed and
adversarially verified by independent subagents. The preview workflow
only runs from the default branch, so it still needs verification after
merging.

Add DEPLOY.md for maintainers. It describes what any static host needs,
the deployment gates and ordering rules, the current GitHub Pages and
Cloudflare Pages setup with its secrets, variables, environments, and
DNS records, pull request preview behavior including fork pull
requests, recovery from bad ordering records, and the one-time move of
drfed.org from the old site. Link it from README.md and
CONTRIBUTING.md, and add a changelog entry.

The maintainer asked for the #134 plan to be carried out. Claude Code
wrote the document with subagents, checked the service setup against
the official GitHub and Cloudflare documentation, and had independent
subagents verify every name and claim against the workflows and
scripts.

The link in the subscription panel now covers the handle alone, and
"follow" is plain text. The underline stays: the link color has about
1.04:1 contrast with the surrounding text in the light theme and 1.07:1
in the dark one, so color alone would not mark it as a link (WCAG 2.2
F73, SC 1.4.1).

A docs job uploaded the site and only then recorded the deployment, so
a job that failed in between left a newer site without a record. The
next older build compared itself with the record before it and could
replace that newer site.

Each docs job now records an in-progress deployment before the upload
and writes drfed-docs-build.json, which names the build, into the site.
The record step marks that deployment successful after the upload.
When the ordering check finds a deployment that is neither successful
nor inactive, it reads drfed-docs-build.json from the public site: the
deployment is marked successful if the site names its build and
inactive otherwise. A site that cannot be read, or that names a
malformed build, fails the job and leaves the records unchanged.

Claude Code drafted the plan and generated the changes to the workflow,
the mise tasks, scripts/release.mts and its fixture tests in
scripts/test-release.mts, and DEPLOY.md. While implementing the check
that reads drfed-docs-build.json from the public site, Claude Code set
out to add extra machinery to work around caching of the site's
documents. The contributor judged that excessive and ruled it out, so
the request only asks for an uncached response. The contributor
verified the final result.

The lockfile of this branch had kept an older resolution in which
solid-js and @solidjs/start used seroval 1.6.8 while seroval-plugins
1.6.11 was resolved against it. main had deduplicated both to 1.6.11,
which the web package pins. With the two versions mixed, the built web
server threw "Seroval Error (step: 1)" while serializing server
responses, and the packages/web runtime test failed.

The lockfile now starts from main's and adds only what this branch
declares, the root @types/node development dependency.

AI provenance: the contributor gave Claude Code the error output of the
failing test and asked it to analyze the cause and fix it. Claude Code
traced the "Seroval Error (step: 1)" failure to the mixed seroval
resolutions in the lockfile and generated the lockfile described above.
The contributor verified the final result.
