fix: Ctrl+C reaches the range draw and the Office padding, and a name that differs only in case is not written over - #207
Three fixes in the engine, none of which moves a byte of any generated file.
What changes for a user
Ctrl+C stops a run that draws its sizes from a range. Every probe of the --size-range draw planned its file under a context of its own. Measured with a real Ctrl+Break on 3000 jpg files and --dry-run: 13.7 to 15.8 s from the signal to the end before, 0.02 to 0.16 s after (a fixed size: 0.01 s).
Ctrl+C stops a large DOCX, PPTX or XLSX while its padding is checksummed. The padding is generated twice, once into a CRC and once into the file, and the CRC pass did not look at the stop. A 2 GB docx: 0.44 to 0.50 s before, 0.01 s after. The pass now returns the stop instead of a CRC of 0.
A file whose name differs from a planned one only in case is refused before the first byte. With FILES_0001.TXT in the directory on Windows, --dry-run ended with 0 and the run wrote the other files and the manifest before the rename met the name, ending with 8. Preflight now folds the directory listing, confirms a folded match by asking the system about the path, and refuses with 5 naming the spelling on the disk. A case sensitive directory still writes both names.
Guards
Each was red on the code before its fix.
TestARangeStopsWhileItsSizesAreDrawn - a pdf range under the format's floor: a live context gets the format's refusal (asserted), a finished one 130, for generate --dry-run and validate.
TestAnOfficePackageStopsWhileItChecksumsItsPadding - a docx just under 4 GiB, a context stopped after n questions for n = 0..64, 250 ms allowed (65 stopped writes take 0.06 s together after the fix, one took 3.46 s before).
TestAContextIsMadeFromNothingOnlyWhereItIsMeantToStart - the two fixes above were the same mistake twice, so context. Background and context.TODO under cmd/ and internal/ are allowed only at 15 listed places, each with its reason, keyed by file and function and closed both ways. On the code before the Office fix it pointed at exactly that line.
TestAFileWhoseNameDiffersOnlyInCaseIsNotWrittenOver - asks the system whether the directory folds case and asserts the branch it is in: refused with 5 and nothing written where it folds, both files where it does not. The planned name and its temporary name. CI runs it on Linux, Windows and macOS.
Mutation entries: 7 new, 4 repointed. Two mutations of the folding branch are reached only where the system folds, so the Linux mutation job cannot prove them. They were checked by hand on Windows instead, which the entry's comment records.
Ctrl+C now stops size-range trials during generation and validation, including dry runs.
Large Office file generation can now be interrupted while its padding is checked.
On filesystems that treat names differing only by letter case as equivalent, runs now stop before writing and identify the existing filename. On filesystems that distinguish case, both filenames remain writable.
Every probe of the range draw planned its file with a context of its own,
so Ctrl+C waited for the whole draw: 13.7 to 15.8 s for three thousand
jpg files with --size-range, against 0.01 s for a fixed size. The run's
context now reaches the draw.

An Office package hashes its padding before writing it, and that pass ran
under a context of its own, so a stop waited for up to four gigabytes of
generated bytes: about half a second for a 2 GB docx. The pass now takes
the write's context and hands the stop back.
A new guard walks cmd/ and internal/ and refuses a context made from
nothing outside a list of the places a context begins, each with its
reason - the range draw and this pass were the same mistake twice.

…byte
Preflight compared names letter for letter, so with FILES_0001.TXT in
the directory --dry-run said nothing was in the way and the run wrote
the other files and the manifest before the rename met the name, ending
with 8. The listing is now also folded, a folded match is confirmed by
asking the system about the path, and the refusal names the spelling on
the disk. A system that keeps case apart still writes both.

Walkthrough
The changes make size-range planning and OPC padding checksum generation respond to the run context. Preflight also detects case-only filename collisions on filesystems that treat the names as equivalent and reports the existing spelling.
Size-range planning now uses the run context for its probes and returns planning errors. Tests cover generate and validate cancellation, and guard where context roots are created.
Stop OPC padding checksum work on cancellation internal/format/opc/opc.go, internal/guard/opcstop_test.go
Filler checksum generation now uses the write context and returns errors before creating the filler entry. A test checks cancellation during a large DOCX write.

Summary
Check planned names against the filesystem internal/engine/preflight.go
Preflight checks exact-name matches and verifies case-folded candidates with Lstat. If directory listing fails, checks use the existing fallback.

Collision errors report the requested and on-disk spellings when the filesystem treats them as equivalent. Tests cover planned and temporary names in dry-run and normal modes.
The changes appear mergeable with bounded follow-up: remove the cancellation test’s timing-based failure and ensure a collision refusal names the file that actually blocks the path.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title clearly describes all three user-facing fixes: Ctrl+C handling for range drawing and Office padding, plus prevention of case-only filename overwrites. It is specific and within the approximately 140-character limit.
Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior
Explanation
The PR adds non-UI runtime behavior and adds tests for each changed path. rangestops_test.go covers canceled range planning in both generate and validate; opcstop_test.go covers cancellation during the large Office padding checksum; and casecollision_test.go covers planned and temporary names in dry-run and normal modes on both case-folding and case-sensitive filesystems. contextroots_test.go also guards against new unscoped context roots. The diff shows no deleted, skipped, or weakened existing tests; all changed test files are additions.
Full details: No Secrets Or Debug Leftovers
Explanation
No prohibited files were added. Added-line scans found no credentials, tokens, private URLs, absolute local paths, IPs, personal email addresses, or listed debug calls. The only logging addition is a test's t.Logf diagnostic describing filesystem case behavior, not leftover debug output.
Full details: No Hardcoded Ui Styling
Explanation
PASS: The PR changes two locale JSON files under internal/gui/text/locale/said, adding translated error messages only. It does not add or change XAML, Slint, Fyne, Tkinter, or WPF UI code, and it introduces no UI styling or copy-pasted controls.
Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems
Explanation
No clear performance problem was introduced. Preflight replaces per-file filesystem checks with one directory listing and map lookups; Lstat runs only for case-folded candidates. Range planning and OPC checksum changes only propagate cancellation through existing work and do not add a large algorithmic cost or UI-thread loop.
Full details: Desktop Robustness
Explanation
No custom-check failure is introduced. The changed production code adds no asset loading, settings writes, culture-dependent parsing, network calls, admin requests, or new destructive action. Range planning now propagates the run context through settleTarget/drawSizes/firstWritable, and OPC padding checksumming now uses the write context and returns cancellation errors. Preflight retains the context check and existing run-lock checks; its new case-folded listing only improves collision refusal. The remaining changes are tests, locales, and changelog text.
Full details: Safe File Parsing
Explanation
No unsafe file parsing was introduced. internal/engine/preflight.go uses os.ReadDir and os.Lstat only for the selected output directory, while checkFileName rejects separators and absolute or volume paths before filepath.Join. The locale changes add static translation strings; the existing catalogue loader unmarshals them into message data. contextroots_test.go uses go/parser.ParseFile only for static repository inspection. opc.go checksums generated padding and does not parse an archive, XML, or formula-bearing input.
Full details: System Changes Are Reversible
Explanation
The PR does not add or change code for network filters or rules, proxies, firewalls, system time, process hooking or injection, Windows services, registries, or drivers. Its changes only propagate cancellation through file planning and Office checksum generation, and add case-collision handling, tests, and locale text. The filesystem writes shown in the diff are ordinary application output or test fixtures and are outside this check.
Full details: Clear User-Facing Text
Explanation
The PR adds a collision error in English and Polish, plus changelog text. The error states what happened, identifies both spellings, explains the case-insensitive conflict, and gives concrete actions: use an empty directory or remove the file. No tooltip, vague button label, raw exception, or unclear confirmation was added.
Full details: No Resource Leaks
Explanation
No resource leak is introduced by the changed code. namesIn uses os.ReadDir, which closes its directory handle, and stores only a bounded, local listing. holds uses os.Lstat without retaining resources. The context changes pass cancellation through range planning and OPC checksum generation; they add no goroutines, timers, subscriptions, or persistent caches. The new tests use t.TempDir, and their cancellation test uses one shared closed channel.
Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs
Explanation
The PR adds a duplicate test helper. internal/guard/casecollision_test.go:90-103 adds namesInDir, which reads directory entries, sorts names, calls t.Helper, and fails on read errors. internal/guard/generatewindow_test.go:711-723 already provides the same package-level namesIn helper with the same behavior. The user-facing fixes are described in the title, PR description, and CHANGELOG.md, and no incompatible public API change is evident.
Resolution
Reuse the existing namesIn(t, dir) helper in casecollision_test.go and remove namesInDir. If the helper must change, move one shared implementation to a common guard test file and update both callers.
