What

Raises everything that could be raised, by hand in one pull request instead of Dependabot's #202 and #203, and widens the weekly version check to the pins nothing watched.

what from to
Mesa beside the window on Windows 26.2.0 (LLVM 22.1.8) 26.2.4 (LLVM 23.1.2)
google/osv-scanner-action (both actions) and .github/osv-scanner-digest 2.6.0 2.7.0
github/codeql-action/upload-sarif 4.38.3 4.39.0
semgrep (and starlette, through it) 1.180.0 1.181.0
mailparser, the mail check's second reader 3.9.36 3.10.0
pin comments of deploy-pages and sbom-action v5.0.0, v0.24.0 v5.0.1, v0.24.3 - the commits already were those releases

Held back on purpose

  • Releases younger than a week, the same hold as the cooldown in dependabot.yml: setup-python 7.1.0, CodeQL 4.39.1, semgrep 1.182.x, mailparser 3.11+. Dependabot proposes the actions and semgrep itself once they are a week old, and the version check reports mailparser. The exception is certifi 2026.10.23, a root store fix, kept although it is younger than that.
  • WiX stays on 5.0.2. 6.x and 7.x come under the OSMF EULA.
  • Python stays on 3.14. semgrep runs on 3.14 at most.
  • Go modules the window takes in through Fyne stay where Fyne 2.8.2 puts them. The command line links none of them, and govulncheck finds nothing in them.

Mesa

The archive's SHA-256 matches the digest GitHub publishes for the release asset. Both files were summed after unpacking it.

The bytes name Mesa 26.2.4 and LLVM 23.1.2, hold neither zlib nor zstd, and import Windows system libraries only.

These licence texts were compared with those of 26.2.0 and are the same byte for byte:

  • LLVM's LICENSE.TXT at llvmorg-23.1.2 against llvmorg-22.1.8
  • Mesa's docs/license.rst, licenses/ and the C11 shim's header

Started with --software-gl, the window loaded opengl\opengl32.dll and opengl\libgallium_wgl.dll at version 26.2.4.0 and kept responding.

THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.md, internal/legal/companions.go, the pin and CHANGELOG.md move together.

The version check

.github/scripts/tool_versions.py now asks about four more kinds of pin:

  • GO_VERSION
  • .github/mesa-dist-win
  • npm install package@version
  • the two held pins, Python and WiX

Each pin is asked of the registry its own install command reads.

What counts as behind:

  • A release younger than a week is printed and not yet due.
  • Go point releases are due at once, because they are usually security fixes. A new Go line is only a note.
  • The held pins print their reason. They fail only on a newer release inside the held line, for example a WiX 5.0.3.

Every request is tried three times before the run fails, because one proxy timeout turned the run of 2026-10-26 red with every pin current. Every path was exercised against fake stale pins. Run against this tree, the check first reported mailparser 3.9.46 as behind, which is why this pull request takes 3.10.0.

Checks run locally, by name

  • The Mesa and companion guards.
  • TestNothingShippedHoldsAnUndeclaredWayOut and TestEveryTelemetryExceptionStillNamesLiveCode.
  • The cheap whole tree gates: branching, codeshape, punctuation, ascii, documents, hardening, mutationcoverage, scannerimage, semgrepgate, dependencygate and the others.
  • staleness.py.

The full suite runs here.

Touches .github/workflows, so it is merged from the browser. Supersedes #202 and #203.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Updates
    • Updated the Windows software OpenGL renderer to Mesa 26.2.4. It is used when the graphics driver does not support OpenGL 2.1 or when the app is launched with --software-gl.
    • Refreshed the renderer’s documented version, licensing references, and checksums. The renderer’s licenses remain unchanged.

The two OSV actions move to 2.7.0 and .github/osv-scanner-digest to the
digest of its image, read from the registry and matching the one the
red run of the Dependabot pull request pulled. Our scan arguments use
none of the --experimental- flags that release deprecates. The SARIF
upload moves to 4.39.0, the newest release older than a week, as the
cooldown in dependabot.yml would have it.

Two pin comments named an older release than the commit they pin:
deploy-pages is v5.0.1 and sbom-action is v0.24.3. The commits were
already those releases, so only the comments change.

3.10.0 is the TypeScript rewrite with CommonJS and ES module builds. The
oracle loads it by directory with require(), which takes the package's
main entry, dist/cjs/index.js, and dist/cjs is marked commonjs. Loaded
that way it read a message with an attachment as before. MIT, as
3.9.36 was.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The newest semgrep older than a week, compiled with every package
raised to its newest release older than a week, which moves starlette to
1.9.0 and nothing else. certifi stays on 2026.10.23, which is younger
than that and is the root store fix, and a security fix is not held
back. A plain pip-compile over the result changes nothing. How to repeat
it is written in requirements-semgrep.in. Licence of 1.181.0 read from
its metadata: LGPL-2.1-or-later, as before.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The software renderer moves from 26.2.0 to 26.2.4, built with LLVM
23.1.2 instead of 22.1.8. The archive's sum matches the digest GitHub
publishes for the release asset, and the two files were summed after
unpacking it. Their bytes name Mesa 26.2.4 and LLVM 23.1.2, hold neither
zlib nor zstd, and import system libraries only. The licence texts were
compared with those of the old versions and are the same byte for byte:
LLVM's LICENSE.TXT, and Mesa's license.rst, licenses/ and the C11 shim's
header. Started with --software-gl, the window loaded these two files,
version 26.2.4.0, and kept responding.

The pin, the registry the notices and the bill of materials come from,
the notices, the allowed download address and two mutation entries move
together.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Besides the go run tools it now asks about GO_VERSION, the release of
the software renderer in .github/mesa-dist-win (which sat four releases
behind with nothing to say so), npm packages installed by version, and
the two versions the owner holds on purpose, Python and WiX. Each is
asked of the registry its own install command reads. A release younger
than a week is printed and not yet due, as Dependabot's cooldown has
it, except for Go point releases, which are usually security fixes. A
held pin prints the reason and fails only on a newer release inside the
held line. Every request is tried three times before the run fails, as
one read timeout made the run of 2026-10-26 red with every pin current.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title clearly identifies the dependency updates and the expanded version check. It is specific enough for release notes and git history. Its 141-character length is effectively within the approximate 140-character limit.

Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior

Explanation

No in-scope non-UI application runtime behavior changed. The PR changes CI tooling, workflow/configuration pins, dependency pins, renderer asset metadata, legal metadata, and guard data. Existing renderer and companion tests remain in place; the only test-file change updates the expected Mesa download URL, with no assertion weakening, skipped test, or deletion. The new .github/scripts/tool_versions.py behavior is CI-only and is excluded by the check criteria.

Full details: No Secrets Or Debug Leftovers

Explanation

No prohibited files or sensitive leftovers were introduced. The diff adds no CLAUDE/AGENTS/.claude or .env paths, no hardcoded credentials, private URLs, local absolute paths, IPs, or personal email addresses. The new GH_TOKEN reference reads an environment variable for GitHub API authentication; it does not contain a token. The added print() calls are intentional version-check reporting in tool_versions.py, not debug leftovers.

Full details: No Hardcoded Ui Styling

Explanation

The PR does not add or change GUI implementation code. The only window-related changes update Mesa renderer metadata, checksums, licensing records, and guard expectations. Other changes affect CI, dependency pins, scripts, tests, and documentation. No XAML, Slint, Fyne, Tkinter, WPF code-behind, or literal UI styling was changed.

Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems

Explanation

No clear performance problem is introduced. The substantive code change is a weekly version-check script, not UI code. It processes three Go modules and one npm package, uses registry calls for release metadata, and performs small version comparisons. The remaining changes update pins, manifests, notices, and workflow comments. No UI-thread blocking, large unvirtualized collection, quadratic collection processing, per-item process/FFI call, or excessive polling is present.

Full details: Desktop Robustness

Explanation

The PR changes dependency metadata, Windows renderer checksums, CI action pins, and a weekly CI version-check script. It does not add desktop window operations, working-directory asset loads, settings/data persistence, destructive actions, elevation, or background work tied to window shutdown. The new network calls are explicit in .github/scripts/tool_versions.py and are run by the clearly named weekly tool-versions workflow; they query release registries for version checking, not silently from the desktop application.

Full details: System Changes Are Reversible

Explanation

PASS: The PR changes dependency pins, CI action versions, renderer metadata, and .github/scripts/tool_versions.py. The script performs read-only HTTPS registry queries and reports version status. The workflow changes install CI-only packages and run scanners; they do not add or change network filters, proxies, firewalls, system time, process hooks/injection, Windows services, registry entries, or system drivers. The Mesa change updates bundled DLL files and checksums; it does not install a Windows driver.

Full details: No Resource Leaks

Explanation

PASS. The PR changes dependency pins, CI workflows, Mesa metadata, legal records, and the version-check script. The only new HTTP handling uses with urllib.request.urlopen(...) as r, which closes each response on success and error. read_text() calls close their files, and retries use time.sleep() without creating persistent timers. No event handlers, subscriptions, goroutines, threads, tasks, unbounded caches, or native allocations were added.

Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs

Explanation

The pull request stays within its stated dependency-update and CI-version-check scope. The title and description cover the Mesa, OSV, CodeQL, Semgrep, mailparser, workflow-pin, and checker changes. The user-visible Mesa renderer change is documented in CHANGELOG.md, and THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.md and the existing README renderer section are updated or remain applicable. The new checker is documented in its module docstring and workflow comments. The diff introduces no public API, CLI, configuration-format, or persisted-data change, and no duplicate application-layer functionality.

Full details: Safe File Parsing

Explanation

The new checker reads external JSON without a size limit. ask() calls r.read() at .github/scripts/tool_versions.py:88, then passes the full body to json.loads() at line 89. The PR applies this to GitHub, Go, npm, Python, and NuGet responses. A compromised or malformed registry response can consume excessive memory or keep the job busy. The added Path.read_text() calls at lines 109 and 186 also have no size guard for local workflow and pin files.

Resolution

Add a maximum response size and reject responses that exceed it before json.loads(). Check Content-Length first, then read at most MAX_RESPONSE_BYTES + 1 from the urlopen() response and fail when the limit is exceeded. Apply equivalent size checks before Path.read_text() or read through a bounded stream for workflow and pin files. Keep the fixed HTTPS allowlist and retain the existing exception handling for malformed JSON.

Full details: Clear User-Facing Text

Explanation

The new CI version checker prints raw exceptions to users. ask() stores any exception and includes it in RuntimeError(...: {failure}) at .github/scripts/tool_versions.py:92; main() then prints it as FAIL: {exc} at line 248. New renderer, npm, Python, WiX, and toolchain checks therefore expose raw registry exceptions without a clear recovery action.

Resolution

Replace raw exception output with a concise message that states the failure and action, for example: FAIL: Could not query <registry> after 3 attempts. Check network access or retry the workflow. Log exception details separately only when needed for diagnostics.

- Around line 149-150: Update the go_tools pin collection so it retains every
version found for each module instead of overwriting earlier pins. Before
checking each module, pass its collected versions to single() so conflicting
pins are rejected; preserve the existing no-pins handling and release comparison
flow.
- Line 162: Update the `released` timestamp calculation to use the version’s
release-availability timestamp, such as the `Timestamp` from `index.golang.org`,
instead of the `.info` `Time` commit timestamp. Preserve the seven-day Go hold
based on when the proxy first cached the version.
- Around line 203-205: Update npm_packages to fail when no pinned mailparser
installation is found, so main cannot silently pass after the mailparser pin is
removed. Preserve the existing collection of pinned npm package versions.

Review comments at @CHANGELOG.md:
- Line 31: Update the changelog wording for the OpenGL renderer to state that
the window tries it after the first window attempt fails or when started with
the relevant option; do not imply that fallback depends on the graphics driver
lacking OpenGL 2.1.

# Go Module Mirror, Index, and Checksum Database

The Go team is providing the following services run by Google: a module mirror for accelerating Go module downloads, an index for discovering new modules, and a global go.sum database for authenticating module content.

Since Go 1.13, the go command by default downloads and authenticates modules using the Go module mirror and Go checksum database. See proxy.golang.org/privacy for privacy information about these services and the go command documentation for configuration details including how to disable the use of these servers or use different ones. If you depend on non-public modules, see the documentation for configuring your environment.

## Services

proxy.golang.org - a module mirror which implements the module proxy protocol. For users downloading large numbers of modules (e.g. for bulk static analysis), the mirror supports a separate endpoint `/cached-only` that instructs the proxy to return only cached content. This will avoid slow downloads, at the cost of possibly missing some rarely-used modules.

` GOPROXY=https://proxy.golang.org/cached-only go mod download golang.org/x/tools@v0.1.0 `

sum.golang.org - an auditable checksum database which will be used by the go command to authenticate modules. Learn more in the go command documentation.

index.golang.org - an index which serves a feed of new module versions that become available by proxy.golang.org. The feed can be viewed at https://index.golang.org/index. The feed is served as new line delimited JSON, providing the module path (as Path), the module version (as Version), and the time it was first cached by proxy.golang.org (as Timestamp). The list is sorted in chronological order. There are optional parameters:

  * 'since': the oldest allowable timestamp (RFC3339 format) for module versions in the returned list. Default is the beginning of time, e.g. https://index.golang.org/index?since=2019-04-10T19:08:52.997264Z
  * 'limit': the maximum length of the returned list. Default = 2000, Max = 2000, e.g. https://index.golang.org/index?limit=10
  * 'include': by default, the index returns module versions that proxy.golang.org has cached copies. If 'include=all', index.golang.org will return all module versions proxy.golang.org or sum.golang.org ever served. Default = "" e.g. https://index.golang.org/index?include=all

If you use the index to download many modules from the module mirror, you will want to use the `/cached-only` endpoint, described above.

## Status: Launched

These services are ready for production use. Please file issues if you spot them, with the title prefix "proxy.golang.org:" (or "index.golang.org:", or "sum.golang.org:").

## Environment setup

These services can only access publicly available source code. If you depend on private modules, set `GOPRIVATE` to a glob pattern that covers them. See Module configuration for non-public modules in the go command documentation for more details.

To opt-out of this module mirror, you can turn it off by setting `GOPROXY=direct`

See the go command documentation for other configuration details.

The cache layout is the same as the proxy URL space, so serving `$GOPATH/pkg/mod/cache/download` at (or copying it to) `https://example.com/proxy` would let users access cached module versions by setting `GOPROXY` to `https://example.com/proxy`. ... The `GOPROXY` protocol section describes requests that may be sent to a `GOPROXY` server. ... Note that version lists and version metadata returned for `.info` requests are not authenticated and may change over time. ... In module-aware mode, the module cache is stored in the `pkg/mod` subdirectory of the first `GOPATH` directory.
This allows modules `example.com/M` and `example.com/m` to both be stored on disk, since the former is encoded as `example.com/!m`.

Path | Description
--- | ---
`$base/$module/@v/list` | Returns a list of known versions of the given module in plain text, one per line. This list should not include pseudo-versions.
`$base/$module/@v/$version.info` | Returns JSON-formatted metadata about a specific version of a module. The response must be a JSON object that corresponds to the Go data structure below:

    type Info struct {
        Version string // version string
        Time time.Time // commit time
    }

The `Version` field is required and must contain a valid, canonical version (see Versions). The `$version` in the request path does not need to be the same version or even a valid version; this endpoint may be used to find versions for branch names or revision identifiers. However, if `$version` is a canonical version with a major version compatible with `$module`, the `Version` field in a successful response must be the same. The `Time` field is optional. If present, it must be a string in RFC 3339 format. It indicates the time when the version was created. More fields may be added in the future, so other names are reserved.
`$base/$module/@v/$version.mod` | Returns the `go.mod` file for a specific version of a module. If the module does not have a `go.mod` file at the requested version, a file containing only a `module` statement with the requested module path must be returned. Otherwise, the original, unmodified `go.mod` file must be returned.
`$base/$module/@v/$version.zip` | Returns a zip file containing the contents of a specific version of a module. See Module zip files for details on how this zip file must be formatted.
`$base/$module/@latest` | Returns JSON-formatted metadata about the latest known version of a module in the same format as `$base/$module/@v/$version.info`. The latest version should be the version of the module that the `go` command should use if `$base/$module/@v/list` is empty or no listed version is suitable. This endpoint is optional, and module proxies are not required to implement it.

When resolving the latest version of a module, the `go` command will request `$base/$module/@v/list`, then, if no suitable versions are found, `$base/$module/@latest`. The `go` command prefers, in order: the semantically highest release version, the semantically highest pre-release version, and the chronologically most recent pseudo-version. In Go 1.12 and earlier, the `go` command considered pseudo-versions in `$base/$module/@v/list` to be pre-release versions, but this is no longer true since Go 1.13.

A module proxy must always serve the same content for successful responses for `$base/$module/$version.mod` and `$base/$module/$version.zip` queries. This content is cryptographically authenticated using `go.sum` files and, by default, the checksum database.

The `go` command caches most content it downloads from module proxies in its module cache in `$GOPATH/pkg/mod/cache/download`. Even when d…[truncated]</excerpt>

## FAQ

### Why is proxy.golang.org sending me so much traffic?

The Go module mirror tries to keep its cache up to date by refreshing recently accessed information before it expires. If your server is seeing too much traffic, we can disable that speculative refresh or work with you to understand the traffic better. Please file a GitHub issue or email us at security@golang.org.

### I committed a new change (or released a new version) to a repository, why isn't it showing up when I run `go get -u` or `go list -m --versions`?

In order to improve our services' caching and serving latencies, new versions may not show up right away. If you want new code to be immediately available in the mirror, then first make sure there is a semantically versioned tag for this revision in the underlying source repository. Then explicitly request that version via `go get module@version`. The new version should be available within one minute. Note that if someone requested the version before the tag was pushed, it may take up to 30 minutes for the mirror's cache to expire and fresh data about the version to become available. </excerpt>

Use the proxy availability timestamp for the seven-day Go hold.

The .info Time field is the commit time. If a maintainer tags an older commit, this check can report the version as due immediately instead of holding it for seven days.

Use the index.golang.org Timestamp, which records when the proxy first cached the version, or another release-availability timestamp. This is a narrow reporting error: the weekly or manually dispatched workflow reports the pin and does not update files or run on pull requests, so the major/security severity is not justified.

Update the `released` timestamp calculation to use the version’s
release-availability timestamp, such as the `Timestamp` from `index.golang.org`,
instead of the `.info` `Time` commit timestamp. Preserve the seven-day Go hold
based on when the proxy first cached the version.

The about screen lists what ships beside the window, so the version of
the software renderer is in its stored tree. One line changes, the
renderer's version and the width of that text. Regenerated with
TFG_WRITE_SCREEN_REFERENCE=1, and nothing else in any screen moved.

From the review of #205:
- Every go run pin of a module is read, and two that disagree fail the
run. golangci-lint runs in two steps of ci.yml, and only the last pin
  was compared before.
- An npm install that names no version fails the run instead of taking
  the package off the check.
- An answer is read up to 32 MiB and refused past that, not parsed. The
largest real one, go.dev/dl, is 2.3 MB.
- A failure says what to do next.

Kept, and written down instead: the age of a Go module is its commit
time, since the proxy gives no other date, and index.golang.org has
only one feed of every module (two thousand lines for nineteen
minutes). The changelog now says when the window loads the renderer the
way the notices do: after the toolkit could not open a window.
