docs(matrix): rate Python stampede prevention by the 0.23.0 single-flight (LAB-10192) - #209
Conversation
…ight The Python cell of the Cache stampede prevention row still described the pre-0.23.0 behaviour. cachekit 0.23.0 ships in-process single-flight (cachekit-py#547) for the async path in every mode and for the sync path without a backend. The sync path with a backend still does not coalesce, so the cell moves to a partial rating and states that gap.

Cache concurrency entry sdk-feature-matrix.md |
The entry describes async and sync single-flight behaviour, backend requests, distributed locking, and cases where callers do not coalesce. It records verification against published cachekit wheels. |

A caller on another thread's event loop runs its own call, so the async path coalesces per event loop, not per process.

The Python cell of the Cache stampede prevention row read "✅ Async decorators via backend lock; sync path none by design". That has been stale since
cachekit0.23.0 (PyPI, 2026-10-18), the first release carrying the in-process single-flight from cachekit-py#547: its merge commit is an ancestor of thev0.23.0tag and not ofv0.22.0.The cell now states in-process single-flight with a⚠️ , the convention the row group already uses for a mode-partial capability (the Python client-L1 SWR cell). The async backed sharing is qualified to a result that serializes. A joined caller that gets no envelope it can decode takes its own trip, so an unserializable result runs once per caller. In multi-tenant encryption, a caller whose tenant cannot be extracted never joins a flight (
0.23.0+floor, for the async path with a backend,@cache(backend=None)and@cache.local(), and for the sync path with@cache(backend=None)and@cache.local(). The async path coalesces per event loop, not per process: a caller on another thread's loop runs its own call (test_a_caller_on_another_event_loop_runs_its_own_call), so the cell says so. It keeps the remaining gap visible: the sync path with a backend takes no lock and does not coalesce, so every concurrent miss there runs the function. That gap is why the rating moves from ✅ toasync_wrapperindecorators/wrapper.pyof the 0.24.1 wheel). The L1-only and@cache.local()modes share an unserializable result unchanged. No other cell or row changes.Re-check against the latest published wheel
On 2026-10-24, PyPI's latest
cachekitis 0.24.1 (published 2026-10-21). Each install came straight from PyPI (uv run --no-project --isolated --python 3.12 --with "cachekit==<v>"), with no source tree on the import path.tests/unit/test_single_flight.pyfrom thev0.24.1tag: 67 passed against the 0.24.1 wheel. The same file from thev0.23.0tag: 67 passed against the 0.23.0 wheel. Its module docstring states the scope: "the sync backed path takes no lock and is not coalesced".object())@cache(backend=None)/@cache.local()@cache(backend=None)/@cache.local(), 20 threadsThe backends are in-memory counting doubles modelled on the one in
tests/unit/test_single_flight.py; no remote backend was used.docs.cachekit.io already gives the 0.23.0 floor (cachekit-io/docs#161), so no docs-site change is needed. No changelog fragment: like #207, this is a one-cell rating correction with no spec change.
