Jira: ADFA-6683

Why

Documentation version 4.0.0 stores most pages in compressed blocks (ContentBlocks, ContentBlockItems) instead of one Brotli row each, which cuts the download by about 10 MB. The builder is OfflineDocumentationTools #58. This is the reader. A 4.0.0 database must not go to dev-assets or Drive until this is merged: without it every blocked page would be empty.

Change

  • Version gate, not table sniffing. MAJOR_VERSION_WITH_CONTENT_BLOCKS = 4 and expectsContentBlocks(db) (next to expectsCompressedTemplates). From major 4 the block query always runs, and a missing table fails the page with the SQLite error. Below 4 the plain query runs even if the tables exist. The flag is read once per database and cleared with the other per-database state.
  • Never a short page. A missing block, a block that doesn't decode, an item outside its block or with a NULL offset or length, an empty Brotli row with no item, and a row that has both an item and content of its own all fail the request. The log names the block and page; the HTTP response has no path or SQL.
  • Cache by database identity. The 8 MiB LRU of decoded blocks is keyed by block id plus the file's length and modification time, so an in-place rewrite (the installers write documentation.db in place) can't serve another build's slice for the same block id. If the file changes during a read, the page fails and nothing is cached. The swap, the reopen of a rewritten installed file, and close() clear everything through forgetDatabaseState().
  • Big blocks. A block over about 1 MiB compressed is read in substr() pieces, because Android's CursorWindow is 2 MiB (the builder has no compressed-size cap yet: ADFA-6788).
  • Logging. One DEBUG line per decode (cache miss). IdeLogger.isDebugEnabled() is always true, so the per-hit line was dropped.
  • Other readers of Content.content checked: nothing else reads a blocked path. readBookshelf reads path and id; PluginDocumentationManager only touches plugin/; CHUNK_QUERY reads continuation rows, which are never blocked.
  • docs/documentation-database.md describes the tables, the version gate, the cache scope (8 MiB per DocumentationContentSource, and there are two, so up to 16 MiB) and that this build reads major 5 and above as 4.

Tests

:common documentation 135, :app localWebServer 97, :idetooltips 15, :plugin-manager 144, all passing; spotlessCheck clean; :app:assembleV8Debug builds. New: ContentBlocksTest, ContentBlockReadTest, ContentBlockSourceTest (pages served from blocks for every set, v3 with tables ignored, v4 without tables failing, undecodable block, item outside its block, swaps v4-v4, v3-v4, v4-v3, reopen of a rewritten file, a rewrite inside the check interval, major 5, a 2.5 MB block), ContentBlockSchemaTest (the real DDL in a real SQLite file), DocumentationContentSourceTest (the gate).
Mutants, each failing at least one test: blocks read at any version, threshold at 3, == instead of >=, flag kept across a swap, cache kept on reopen, cache kept on swap, failure served as an empty page, slice unchecked, stale cache key, whole-blob read.

Device check (Pixel 6 Pro, debug build, the 4.0.0 database packed from the 2026-10-20 build as the sdcard override): 12 of 13 sampled pages byte-identical to the 3.x layout, covering all five sets and the over-cap pages that stay rows; decode 6 to 13 ms per block. The 13th, k/kotlin-stdlib/kotlin.collections/index.html, returns 500 on both layouts (ADFA-6786, an existing render cap). That run was on the build before the review fixes; rerun it on this branch before the 4.0.0 database ships.

Not covered

  • Fresh-process timings against 3.x and the off-device traffic check (ADFA-6703) wait for the full ship-time build.
  • In the same in-place rewrite window the dictionary codec, version flags and compiled templates are still cached from the old file. That is older than this change and isn't fixed here.
  • Each substr() piece query loads the whole blob, so a block of n pieces costs n reads. The largest 4.0.0 block (559,581 bytes) is one piece.
  • :common:lintV8Debug reports 6 errors in files this change doesn't touch (ContextUtils.kt, InsetUtils.kt, two translated strings.xml).
  • The first two commits keep their prototype messages; the later commits supersede them.

Prototype. A decoded block is cached by its ContentBlocks id, least
recently used out once the cache would hold more than 8 MiB of plain
bytes; a block over the whole budget is not cached. Every access holds
the cache's monitor, and callers decode outside it.

An item is sliced at [offset, offset + length), checked as 64-bit
before it is narrowed to an index, so an out-of-range row fails rather
than serving the wrong bytes.

Nothing uses either yet; the next commit wires them into the reader.

Prototype, to the 2026-10-20 block format spec. When the active database
has a ContentBlockItems table (looked for once per database), the
content lookup LEFT JOINs it; a row with an entry is served from its
block, Brotli-decoded with the codec and dictionary Content rows use,
cached, and sliced. The slice then goes through the same path a decoded
row does: templated pages render from it, untemplated ones go out as
they are. A database without the table runs the original query.

Both row readers use it: the page lookup behind the WebView interceptor
and the port-6174 server, and the jstopics render. The cache is cleared
with the template cache on every database switch, and on close.

Each block decode logs one INFO line under the DocBlocks tag (block id,
path, compressed and plain bytes, decode ms, cached plain bytes); a
cache hit logs at DEBUG.

The prototype found blocks by looking for the ContentBlockItems table.
A database now says it has them by declaring documentation version 4
(MAJOR_VERSION_WITH_CONTENT_BLOCKS, read through expectsContentBlocks),
as it says it has a dictionary from 2 and compressed templates from 3.
From 4 the query joining ContentBlockItems always runs, so a file
missing the tables fails every page with SQLite's error instead of
serving its blocked rows empty. Below 4 the original query runs, even
when the tables exist. The answer is cached per database, like
templatesCompressed; a failure to read the version is not cached.

A page never comes back short or empty. A missing block, one that does
not decode, an item outside its block or without an offset or length,
and a Brotli row with empty content and no item each fail the lookup.
The log names the block and the page, and for a decode failure the
database; the HTTP response names none of them, since only template
failures are sent.

Every swap, the reopen of a rewritten installed file, and close() drop
the same per-database state through one function, which now includes
the content-block flag and the decoded blocks. A read decodes and
caches a block under the read lock and a swap clears the cache under
the write lock, so an old database's block cannot be cached after a
swap. The DocBlocks decode and cache-hit lines are DEBUG, not INFO.

Nothing else reads Content.content for a blocked path:
WebServer.readBookshelf reads path and id, PluginDocumentationManager
only probes, writes and deletes under plugin/, and the chunk query
reads continuation rows. None of those is ever blocked.

Tests: ContentBlockSourceTest covers a page from each of the five sets,
cache hits, a block over the cache budget, each failure above, a
version 3 file with the tables, a version 4 file without them, swaps
4 to 4, 3 to 4 and 4 to 3, the installed file's reopen, and a swap
waiting for a decode in progress. ContentBlockSchemaTest runs the SQL
against the 4.0.0 schema in a real SQLite file.
DocumentationContentSourceTest covers the gate at 3, at 4, with no
version, and after a failed version read. Each mutant the plan names
(blocks read at any version, the threshold at 3, the flag kept across
a swap, the cache kept on reopen, a failure served as an empty page,
the slice unchecked) fails at least one of them, as does a read that
does not hold the read lock.

Not covered: the device check with a 4.0.0 database from
OfflineDocumentationTools, which does not exist yet.

- Key each cached block by the active file's length and modification
time as well as its id. The installers rewrite the installed file in
place under the open handle, and the reopen check runs at most once a
second, so until then the handle read the new file's rows against the
old file's cached blocks. A rewrite between a row and its block now
fails that page instead of slicing the wrong block.
- Read ContentBlocks.data in 1 MiB substr() pieces when it is larger,
so no row has to fit Android's 2 MiB CursorWindow whole.
- Fail a row that has an item and content of its own: version 4 empties
  a blocked row's content.
- Log a block decode at debug, but not a cache hit: IdeLogger has debug
on in every build, so a hit line reached logcat for most requests.
- Tests: a version 5 database read as 4 from its blocks, close() and the
swaps dropping cached blocks, the rewrite in place, a block over 2 MiB
compressed through real SQLite, and the piece boundaries.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- The 8 MiB block cache is per DocumentationContentSource, and there
are two, so up to 16 MiB of decoded blocks in all.
- Cached blocks are keyed by the file's state, for the window before a
file rewritten in place is reopened.
- Blocks over 1 MiB compressed are read in pieces, and what that costs.
- This build reads major 5 and above as 4 and cannot refuse it, so a
breaking format must not reach installs running it.

📝 Summary
  • Add reader support for documentation databases at major version 4 and later. The reader selects ContentBlockItems only when the database version supports content blocks. Earlier versions continue to read content from their rows.
  • Read large compressed blocks in bounded pieces. Validate block references and item ranges, and cache decoded blocks within a per-reader byte limit.
  • Clear cached block data when the database changes or closes. Fail the page read when block data is missing, invalid, truncated, or cannot be decoded.
  • Add tests for version-based query selection, block reads and slicing, caching, database rewrites, and large blocks. Test results and completion status are not provided here.
  • Risk: Version 4 and later databases must include valid block tables and metadata. Missing or invalid data causes page reads to fail.

Documentation version 4 and later can store content in compressed blocks. The reader selects block-aware queries, reads and decodes block data in pieces, validates and slices row content, and caches decoded blocks. Tests cover version selection, block handling, rendering, and database changes.

An installer rewrites the installed documentation.db in place, under the
open handle, which reads the new file at once; the swap check reopens it
up to a check interval later. Until then the cached answers to "does this
file store blocks" and "are its templates compressed", and the dictionary
codec, were the old file's: a version 3 file rewritten to 4 decoded its
blocked rows' empty content, a 4 rewritten to 3 ran the query joining
tables it lacks, and a new dictionary decoded pages to other bytes without
failing.

Each is now cached with the file's length and modification time, the
state the block cache already keys on, and read again when that moves. A
read takes the block decision once, before its query, and both picks the
query and decodes the row by it.

Compiled templates and template names stay per database: keying them
would mean clearing the engine's caches under the read lock or keying
them in the loader. A template compiled from the old file serves until
the reopen.
