Backports apache/apisix-ingress-controller#2905 to the APISIX and API7EE providers.

Gateway API conformance

The investigation started with three skipped HTTPRoute Core tests in the APISIX suite:

  • HTTPRouteInvalidBackendRefUnknownKind
  • HTTPRouteInvalidCrossNamespaceBackendRef
  • HTTPRouteInvalidNonExistentBackendRef

Each requires an invalid backend to produce HTTP 500. Gateway cleanup could delete the translated route, causing 404 instead. This PR restores these tests by fixing the cleanup boundary. The API7EE suite already enables them.

Scope and impact

The controller currently allows multiple Gateway references to one GatewayProxy and merges their resources into one cache. This does not give those Gateways independent routing domains: overlapping hostname/path or SNI rules can still conflict. HTTPRouteMultipleGateways and TLSRouteHostnameIntersection remain skipped for the shared-data-plane limitations.

The reproduced defect is the deletion boundary: removing one Gateway clears entries owned by other Kubernetes resources too, including unrelated, non-conflicting routes and certificates. This PR preserves those entries and reconciles the deleted Gateway's attached routes. It does not add Gateway isolation or resolve conflicting routing rules.

IngressClass deletion is unchanged: it still clears the whole GatewayProxy cache, including resources contributed by Gateways that share it. Narrowing it requires every IngressClass-scoped controller to retract its resources when the IngressClass is deleted, which is out of scope here.

Behavior changes from master

Deleting a Gateway should remove its certificates and trigger reconciliation of its attached routes:

  • Remove route configuration if the deleted Gateway was its only valid parent.
  • Keep route configuration for any remaining valid parents.
  • Preserve unrelated routes and certificates in the same GatewayProxy cache.

Clearing the entire GatewayProxy cache deletes all of these configurations indiscriminately. The previous full-cache deletion also masked the missing reconciliation of attached routes.

Scenario master This PR
Delete Gateway A while A and B contribute non-conflicting resources to the same proxy cache Both providers clear the shared cache; deletion is not restricted to A's resources. Deletes only A's certificates and A's own global rule from the cache. APISIX schedules the remaining snapshot; API7EE scopes the immediate SSL deletion to A's resource key, then schedules a full sync so the evicted global rule and plugin metadata reach the data plane.
Delete the last Gateway that references a GatewayProxy Clears the entire proxy cache. Also clears the GatewayProxy's plugin metadata once no Gateway or IngressClass references the proxy. The same rule applies when a Gateway moves to another GatewayProxy, so plugin metadata still used by other Gateways is kept. Attached routes are retracted by their own reconciliation.
Gateway deletion event Route controllers ignore the event; the full cache wipe masks the missing route cleanup. All five Route controllers reconcile attached routes on Gateway deletion.
Route reconciliation after its Gateway disappears Treats the missing Gateway as unresolved ownership and skips cleanup. Retracts configuration when no known parent remains. A never-resolved parent cannot block cleanup; surviving parents with previously verified ownership are re-evaluated even if their GatewayClass disappears.
Three invalid-backend Core tests Skipped after requests could return 404 during Gateway cleanup. Enables the tests after fixing cleanup interference; all three pass in both APISIX modes.
TLS and redirect e2e assertions A handshake error can abort Eventually; redirect headers are checked with one-shot requests. Retries TLS requests and checks redirect status and Location together.
Restart after scaling the data plane to zero Starts scaling back up without waiting for old pods to disappear. Waits for zero pods before scaling back up and creating new port-forwards.

Each Route controller remembers previously verified parent ownership for the current Route and Gateway identities. This prevents an unknown sibling parent from keeping a deleted Gateway's route active, while allowing surviving known parents to keep serving traffic. Recreated resources and changed class references cannot reuse the old ownership record.

The e2e changes address timing rather than routing semantics. TLS and redirect checks must allow configuration to propagate before failing. Restart setup must wait for old pods to disappear because a terminating pod can still be Ready and receive a port-forward that breaks when it exits.

Validation

Parent-resolution follow-up:

  • A regression test fails on the previous head in all three cases: deleting a Gateway left its own global rule in the cache, and deleting the last Gateway also left the GatewayProxy's plugin metadata. Both are evicted at the store level; the API7EE immediate sync still covers SSLs alone, because ADC does not label-filter global rules, and a full sync scheduled after the deletion pushes the removals. API7EE defaults sync_period to 0, which previously made Start return without consuming sync notifications; a zero period now only disables the ticker, so the scheduled sync runs in the default configuration too.

  • Related race tests and the repository-pinned linter pass.

  • All five Route kinds cover deletion with a never-resolved sibling and preservation of a previously resolved sibling whose GatewayClass disappears.

  • Provider/controller regression tests fail before the follow-up and pass after it.

Earlier full-suite runs used APISIX 3.19.0 and ADC 0.31.0; CI re-runs against the updated head:

  • Full conformance passed in Admin API and standalone modes. HTTP Core: 30 → 33 passed, with 7 → 4 skipped.
  • Both provider regressions and related race tests passed. The regressions reproduce sibling-resource loss on the original implementations.
  • The e2e cases changed by the timing fixes (TLS, redirects, data-plane restart) passed in both modes. Gateway deletion and surviving parents are covered by the provider/controller unit tests and the re-enabled conformance tests; this PR adds no dedicated e2e case for them.

Native API7EE deployment tests were not run locally; they run in CI.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Stale route configuration is removed when routes are deleted or no longer have a valid managed Gateway parent.
    • Deleting a Gateway preserves shared proxy resources and resources still used by other Gateways.
    • Gateway deletion events are handled consistently across route types.
  • Tests
    • Expanded coverage for route cleanup, shared resources, and Gateway parent resolution.
    • Conformance checks now cover invalid backend references.

📝 Walkthrough

Route controllers now track Gateway parent resolution and remove provider route resources when no managed parents resolve. Provider Gateway deletion targets matching SSL resources and handles shared global rules and plugin metadata based on remaining references. Conformance and end-to-end tests also change.

Changes: Route and Gateway cleanup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parent resolution and route cleanup
internal/controller/*route_controller.go, internal/controller/route_parent_resolver.go, internal/controller/utils.go
Route controllers accept Gateway delete events, use a shared resolver, and forget resolver state when a route is absent. They delete provider resources when no managed Gateway parent resolves. The resolver reuses cached GatewayClass ownership only when route and Gateway identity checks match.
Parent-resolution behavior and tests
internal/controller/route_parent_resolver_test.go, internal/controller/utils_parentref_test.go, internal/controller/httproute_controller_test.go
Tests cover Gateway deletion, missing GatewayClasses, identity changes, lookup errors, parent-reference parsing, and route cleanup when a GatewayClass has not resolved.
Provider Gateway resource deletion
internal/provider/api7ee/*, internal/provider/apisix/*, internal/adc/client/client.go, internal/provider/common/configmanager.go
Both providers target SSL resources matching the deleted Gateway’s labels. ADC eviction always removes its global rule and removes shared plugin metadata only when no Gateway or IngressClass still references it. Tests check resource preservation and eviction.
Conformance skip list
test/conformance/conformance_test.go
The skip list retains HTTPRouteNoBackendRefs and removes three invalid-backend-reference tests.
End-to-end assertions and dataplane wait
test/e2e/crds/v2/tls.go, test/e2e/ingress/annotations.go, test/e2e/scaffold/apisix_deployer.go
TLS and redirect checks use RequestAssert to assert response status and redirect locations. When replicas are zero, the deployer waits up to 60 seconds for matching Gateway pods to terminate.

With the default API7EE configuration, deleting a Gateway can leave its global rule and plugin metadata active on the data plane. Make sure the deletion notification is always consumed, even when periodic sync is disabled, before merging.

Full details: Security Check

Explanation

PASS. No security issue was introduced in the reviewed diff. 1. Sensitive data exposure: No new sensitive logging or response serialization. Existing Task logging continues to expose only config names and redacted resource data. 2. Unencrypted secrets: No database models, persistence, or secret storage changes. 3. Authorization bypass: No mutating API endpoints or permission checks changed. 4. Cross-resource access: No child-resource API access changes. 5. TLS/cryptography: No TLS verification, certificate validation, or cryptographic configuration changes. 6. Shared resource safety: Gateway deletion now uses Gateway labels and SSL-only deletion in both providers. applyStoreChanges removes the Gateway global rule and removes shared plugin metadata only when no Gateway or IngressClass still references the config (internal/adc/client/client.go:181-219). API7EE schedules a full snapshot after deletion (internal/provider/api7ee/provider.go:230-242). 7. Secret references: No secret-reference resolution changes. The route-parent changes retract stale route configuration and do not grant new access. The PR description is truncated, but the omitted text is not required for these code-based checks.

Full details: E2e Test Quality Review

Explanation

Blocking: the shared-Gateway deletion flow still has no dedicated E2E coverage. The only changed E2E files cover TLS requests, redirects, and pod termination. The existing Gateway deletion test covers one Gateway only (test/e2e/gatewayapi/httproute.go:825-850). The new shared-resource tests are provider tests using httptest, fake clients, and seeded ADC state; they do not delete Kubernetes Gateways and verify the real data plane. The added handlers also call require.NoError from server goroutines (internal/provider/apisix/provider_test.go:180, internal/provider/api7ee/provider_test.go:146), ignore JSON encoding errors, and ignore server.Close errors.

Resolution

Add a dedicated E2E test for each applicable provider mode. Create two Gateways that share one GatewayProxy, configure distinct routes and certificates, delete one Gateway through Kubernetes, and verify through the real data plane that only the deleted Gateway resources disappear while the sibling route and certificate remain. In the added httptest handlers, report request decode failures to the test goroutine instead of calling require from the server goroutine, check JSON encode errors, and assert server shutdown errors.

Gateway deletion only evicted the Gateway's certificates, so its own
global rule and the GatewayProxy's plugin metadata stayed in the shared
cache and on the data plane after the last Gateway referencing the
proxy was deleted. Evict the Gateway's global rule, and clear the plugin
metadata once no Gateway or IngressClass references the proxy.

The API7EE Gateway deletion sync is scoped to SSLs, so the Gateway's
evicted global rule and the proxy's plugin metadata stayed on the data
plane until the next full sync. Schedule a full sync after the deletion,
as the APISIX provider already does.

`SyncPeriod` is zero; its early return currently prevents processing

consuming `syncCh` while leaving periodic synchronization disabled, allowing
Gateway deletion changes to propagate.

API7EE defaults sync_period to 0, and Start returned before reading
syncCh in that case. Notifications from Gateway deletion and GatewayProxy
updates were dropped, so an evicted Gateway's global rule and plugin
metadata never reached the data plane. Keep the loop running and only
skip the ticker.
