refactor(cli): read context window from extension state instead of resolving it locally - #2296
The CLI resolved the context window itself by looking up the current model in routerModels via getModelId(). That only worked for router providers (static providers such as Anthropic, Bedrock and Gemini always fell back to 200K) and tied the CLI to provider model-ID logic.
The extension now reports the active task's resolved context window as ExtensionState.contextWindow, read from the task's API handler in getStateToPostToWebview(). The CLI stores that value and falls back to the 200K default when it is absent, and no longer tracks routerModels or apiConfiguration for this purpose.

New Features
The CLI header displays the context-window size reported for the active task’s model, including models from different provider types.
Positive integer values are shown as reported. If the value is missing or invalid, the CLI displays the default of 200,000 tokens.
The context-window value remains available when switching tasks.
The extension now reports the active task’s model context window in webview state. The CLI stores that value and uses it for the header. Missing or invalid values resolve to the 200,000 default.

Summary
Publish context window in extension state packages/types/src/vscode-extension-host.ts, src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts
ExtensionState adds optional contextWindow. ClineProvider includes the active task’s model value in webview state and leaves it undefined when no task is active or lookup throws. Tests cover these cases.
Store and use reported context window apps/cli/src/ui/store.ts, apps/cli/src/ui/hooks/useMessageHandlers.ts, apps/cli/src/ui/App.tsx, apps/cli/src/lib/utils/context-window.ts, apps/cli/src/lib/utils/__tests__/context-window.test.ts, apps/cli/src/ui/__tests__/store.test.ts
The CLI store replaces router model and API configuration state with contextWindow. The message handler updates it from extension state, and AppInner passes the validated value to the header. Tests cover invalid values and task-switch preservation.

No actionable merge-blocking issue is established. The CLI uses the extension-reported context window and defaults invalid or missing values to 200,000; merge after normal checks pass.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the main change: the CLI now reads the context window from extension state instead of resolving it locally. The raw summary confirms this: getContextWindow takes a reported value, the store adds contextWindow, and ExtensionState gains contextWindow. The title follows the conventional commit format and uses short, plain wording.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the main sections of the template: the linked issue field, the description, the test procedure, and the checklist. The issue field says 'None.' and does not link an approved GitHub Issue, which the template requires. The test procedure lists only 'unit, integration' and gives no specific tests, commands, or steps. The description explains the what and the why, and it covers the how at a high level (ExtensionState.contextWindow read in getStateToPostToWebview()). It does not cover reviewer checks or trade-offs. The description is mostly complete but misses a required linked issue and a usable test procedure.
Resolution
Link an approved GitHub Issue in the 'Related GitHub Issue' section using 'Closes: #<number>'. The template requires this for every PR. Expand the 'Test Procedure' section with the specific tests run (for example, the context-window, store, and ClineProvider spec files) and the manual steps, if any. Optionally note reviewer focus areas, such as the removal of the routerModels and apiConfiguration state and the fallback when contextWindow is absent.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path meets the security failure conditions. ClineProvider.getStateToPostToWebview() adds only the active model's numeric contextWindow metadata. The CLI validates it as a positive integer before using it for the display metric and otherwise uses the default. The changes do not expose secrets or PII, execute input, or alter approval, allowlist, or command controls.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The changed path only adds contextWindow to the extension-to-CLI state message and stores it in the in-memory Zustand store. The diff introduces no persistence write, serialization, async write, transaction, rollback, or persisted default propagation path. resetForTaskSwitch preserves the in-memory value, and the extension reports undefined when no task is active; this does not meet the explicit persistence failure conditions.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
No changed lifecycle path introduces a resource leak or duplicate work. The CLI changes only transform and store the reported contextWindow; they add no listener, watcher, timer, task, provider, or disposal path. ClineProvider.getStateToPostToWebview() adds a synchronous currentTask?.api?.getModel() read inside a catch, and the existing task lifecycle remains unchanged. The added tests cover no active task and handler failure without creating resources.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The prior regression remains unresolved. The changed useMessageHandlers state path calls setContextWindow(state.contextWindow ?? null) in apps/cli/src/ui/hooks/useMessageHandlers.ts, but the PR adds no focused test for this hook. The existing utility, producer, and store tests do not verify that a state message transfers a positive value into the CLI store or clears a previous value when contextWindow is absent.
Resolution
Add focused useMessageHandlers tests. Send a state message with a positive contextWindow and assert that the CLI store receives it. After setting a prior value, send a state message with an absent or undefined contextWindow and assert that the store is reset to null. Keep the existing producer, utility, and store tests.

Keep a stale context window from replacing the current task's value.
postStateToWebview() can run two calls at the same time. Each call reads contextWindow from the task that is current at that point. A later await isZooCodeAuthenticated() lets an older call resume after a newer one. The CLI applies each state.contextWindow in arrival order and does not check which task the value came from. If the older snapshot arrives last, the header keeps the previous task's window until the next state post.
Checking clineMessagesSeq does not fix this. The sequence number is assigned before the awaits that precede the window read, so the call order does not match the read order.

Cover the state-message path to the header context window.
The changed tests call only getContextWindow with direct values. No test sends a state message with contextWindow through the message handler. No test checks the stored value after such a message. A handler regression that stores null instead of state.contextWindow would leave the suite passing.
Add this coverage in apps/cli, the package that owns this code. Use package-local integration tests. Do not place it in webview-ui or apps/vscode-e2e. Cover both cases:
A state message with contextWindow: 64_000 stores 64_000. With 32,000 tokens used, the header shows 50%. A handler that always stores null fails this case.
A state message without contextWindow stores null. The header falls back to the 200,000 default and shows 16% for the same 32,000 tokens.

around lines 4 - 6:
Extend the package-local integration tests beyond direct getContextWindow calls
to send state messages through the message handler and verify the stored
contextWindow and header output: 64,000 should be stored and show 50% with
32,000 tokens used; when contextWindow is omitted, null should be stored and the
header should use the 200,000 default and show 16%.
