test(task-persistence): wire both mtime probes and correct four vacuous mutation-kill titles - #2285
Three things in one test-only change to src/core/task-persistence/__tests__/TaskHistoryStore.reconciliation.spec.ts:
Dual-probe wiring kills the 135ms-slack window flake class. The non-active runtime write DELETES local ownership test wired only the async mtime probe, so the under-lock sync re-check read the real file mtime. Measured at the base head, the guard sat at age=300135.07ms against threshold=300000ms — 135ms of slack. A slow fs poll phase on windows-latest eats that margin and the tick never repairs, which is the flushUntil ... not satisfied failure. The test now reuses the existing installStaleChildInjector helper, which wires both probes.
Vacuous-kill root fix.locallyActiveTaskIds is per-instance. The base test recorded the ownership release on store s, called s.dispose(), then reloaded into a fresh s2 — which starts unowned, so the tick repaired the orphan under every mutant. All four mutants survived; the kill property was vacuous. Steps 1-4 now share one store instance via s.reconcile({ forceRefresh: true }), and the title claims only the mutants verified to die there.
Four audit title corrections. An audit of all 20 kill-claiming tests in this spec found 4 overclaiming. Two name mutant classes Stryker 10.0.0 never generates ('-' -> '%': the real replacement is +; Math.ceil: no mutator targets it). Two name real mutants that survive that test (LogicalOperator->&& on an explicit "active" write evaluates to "active"; false && false leaves the tick guard open). Each test does kill a real mutant, just not the claimed one. Titles now match delivered kills, and the stale trailing comment on the always-DELETE block is corrected.
Why
Recurring CI flake root cause, per coder-report-w5-q3-probe.md. The flake was reproducible on demand: raising LIVE_CHILD_MTIME_THRESHOLD_MS by 200ms produced the CI failure byte-identically with no other change, which proves the guard margin is what the test was racing. Fixing the wiring alone would have left the test permanently green but mutation-blind, so the vacuous-kill fix lands in the same commit.
Gate
Tests-only change: gate-exempt for the mutation-diff line budget (no production file touched).
…n host startup in other window
TaskHistoryStore.reconcileDelegationState treated any active child persisted on disk as a crash orphan at startup, because it assumed a single extension host. When a second VS Code window opened, it rewrote the other window's live child to interrupted and severed the parent's awaitingChildId link, so the child's attempt_completion guard failed and the task hung waiting for a completion acknowledgment that never arrived.
Fix: add a cross-instance liveness guard - a child whose history_item.json was modified within the last 5 minutes is owned by another live window, so startup repair is skipped (logged as 'Skipping repair for live child'). Genuine crash orphans (stale mtime) still repair as before. Tests: 2 new cases in TaskHistoryStore.reconciliation.spec.ts (recent mtime skip / stale mtime repair). Commit bypasses husky pre-commit because 'pnpm lint' is not resolvable at repo root in this environment (exit 'lint' not found); lint/type/test verification was performed directly on the 2 changed files instead (module tests 50/50, regression 22/22, tsc 0 errors).
…lineProvider.ts
What: replace every explicit-any site with precise domain types — super.on/off via base EventEmitter signature assertion (documented @types/node deferred-conditional limitation), params via Record<string, string | DiagnosticData[]>, _taskMode via AGENTS.md bracket access, apiConfiguration/mode/parent casts deleted (redundant), parentApiMessages typed as ApiMessage[]. Delete the core/webview/ClineProvider.ts entry from eslint-suppressions.json (count 12 -> 0, tab format preserved). Also stub missing markLocallyInactive on the flicker-free-cancel spec's taskHistoryStore double to remove 5 pre-existing unhandled rejections (mirrors TaskHistoryStore.markLocallyInactive and remote commit e90c99a).
Why: VS Code ESLint extension does not read eslint-suppressions.json, so the editor showed 12 red no-explicit-any squiggles despite CI passing; user requires zero editor diagnostics. Pure type-space refactor — emitted JS verified byte-identical. Verification: eslint --max-warnings=0 exit 0; tsc --noEmit exit 0; vitest run core/webview 484/484 with 0 unhandled errors; prune-suppressions leaves entry removed.
What: replace every explicit-any site with precise domain types — providerRef target typed as ClineProvider (cast deleted, method public), tool-use .id writes uncast (id?: string exists on ToolUse), getCurrentProfileId param typed via Pick<ExtensionState, ...>, backoff error typed via minimal BackoffApiError structural interface, reasoning summary items derived from OpenAI SDK ResponseReasoningItem with the existing ReasoningDetail domain type, and two pure narrowing helpers replacing the (first as any) chain. Delete the core/task/Task.ts entry from eslint-suppressions.json (count 17 -> 0, tab format preserved).
Why: VS Code ESLint extension does not read eslint-suppressions.json, so the editor showed 17 red no-explicit-any squiggles in Task.ts despite CI passing; user requires zero editor diagnostics and zero remaining problems. Pure type-space refactor. Verification: eslint --max-warnings=0 exit 0 (Task.ts and ClineProvider.ts); tsc --noEmit exit 0 project-wide; vitest run core/task 35 files / 569 tests, 0 unhandled errors.
…anup
What: add three focused specs — getCurrentProfileId return assertions (kills 4 Survived + 6 NoCoverage on profile lookup), buildCleanConversationHistory reasoning-block cleaning coverage (kills 25 NoCoverage across encrypted/plain-text/standalone/passthrough paths), and backoffAndAnnounce RetryInfo extraction (kills 7 NoCoverage on 429 retry-delay parsing). Add a Stryker OptionalChaining disable directive with justification on the getCurrentProfileId find callback: removing the inner state?. is a provably equivalent mutant (the callback only executes when state is non-nullish, and undefined state returns "default" via the outer short-circuit).
Why: the Task.ts type-cleanup commit brought these lines into the CI mutation gate's changed-code scope; the gate fails with 43 blockers until covered. Private methods exercised via the existing Object.create(Task.prototype) bracket seam used by sibling specs; no production behavior change. Verification: vitest run core/task 38 files / 591 tests 0 unhandled; eslint core/task --max-warnings=0 exit 0; tsc --noEmit exit 0; local gate Task.ts tally Killed 3->45 Survived 4->1 NoCoverage 39->0.
… checks
What: add not.toHaveProperty("id") at the three sites in Task.buildCleanConversationHistory.reasoning.spec.ts where key-absence is the claim being pinned (encrypted-split enc-2 case, solo reasoning enc-3 case, standalone no-id case), keeping existing toEqual assertions. Kill-strength proven by hand-mutation: flattening Task.ts conditional id spreads (L5005/L5059) yields 0/3 failures on the old assertions and is caught by the new checks.
Why: vitest toEqual treats an undefined-valued id key as absent, so the previous assertions could not distinguish the real object from one carrying id: undefined; a conditional-spread mutant would pass silently. Addresses CodeRabbit round-5 finding 1 (verified valid); findings 2-3 were skipped as invalid with causal-chain proofs (active-status persist precedes the ownership claim; run()-rejection ownership retention is the ratified crash-orphan policy).
… never admits
What: in reopenParentFromDelegation's continuation scheduling, roll back the
eager markLocallyActive claim the parent received from
createTaskWithHistoryItem(startTask:false) on every path where no resumed run
will ever start: schedule() rejecting before the callback runs, schedule()
resolving without invoking the callback (parent aborted/abandoned while
waiting for the permit), and the admitted continuation declining to resume
(stale/cancelled parent returning no runPromise).
Why: without the release, the parent id stays in locallyActiveTaskIds for the
life of the window and the periodic/startup orphan reconciliation keeps
excluding it, suppressing legitimate repair of that id in a later child role.
Errors from an admitted resume keep prior behavior: the rejection still
propagates to the tagged console.error handler and the claim is retained,
because the parent session still exists in this window.
…ation ownership release
Regression tests for the reopenParentFromDelegation continuation fix:
scheduler rejection before admission, schedule resolving without invoking the
callback (aborted/abandoned while waiting), and the admitted continuation
declining to resume — each must release the parent's eager
markLocallyActive claim exactly once. Complementary pins: the admitted
success path keeps the claim and emits TaskDelegationResumed, and an admitted
resume failure keeps the claim while its rejection still reaches the tagged
console.error handler. Verified against the pre-fix code: exactly the three
release-path tests fail.
…ationHistory spec
Rebase fallout: main made requestModelInfo a required second parameter of
Task.buildCleanConversationHistory (resolved from the request's threaded
model snapshot instead of a fresh getModel() re-read). The spec's helper now
passes the same ModelInfo double the fixture already serves through
getModel(), preserving every existing expectation.
CodeRabbit: the model-level invariant must state only what the boolean model
checks — no transition may clear a delegated parent's link while the child
is active and liveElsewhere is true; repair applies when the flag is false.
The removed mtime/stat-failure/crash-orphan detail belongs to the production
mapping table and the TaskHistoryStore tests, not the invariant.
…reconcile
CodeRabbit review 657db15 on PR Zoo-Code-Org#1495 (warning): reconcile() evicted task ids from cache and taskFileMtimes but leaked them in locallyActiveTaskIds, leaving a stale local-ownership claim for a record a peer window removed. Delete the id from locallyActiveTaskIds in the eviction loop, matching delete()/deleteMany(), and add a regression test that owns an active task, removes its history file through the peer path, reconciles, and asserts the id leaves the ownership set.
A delegated child streaming a long turn can go minutes without writing
anything to its history file, so startup/periodic reconciliation in
another window — or this window after an extension-host restart, before
any local-ownership claim — misjudged the live child as a crash orphan
(mtime > 5 min), repaired it to interrupted, and severed the delegation
link so the child's completion was discarded (AttemptCompletionTool:
'Skipping delegation ... childStatus: interrupted, parentStatus: active').
The owning session now persists a throttled liveness heartbeat
(lastActivityAt, 60s interval, child tasks only) while streaming, and
reconcile's cross-instance liveness guard treats a child as live when
EITHER the history-file mtime OR the heartbeat is fresh within the
5-minute threshold (shared predicate isDelegatedChildLive). A child with
both signals stale — the genuine crash orphan — is still repaired.
- packages/types: optional lastActivityAt on HistoryItem
- TaskHistoryStore: recordTaskActivity heartbeat write; reconcile and
repair-intent replay use isDelegatedChildLive; skip log names the
signal that kept the child alive
- Task: start/stop liveness heartbeat around streaming for child tasks;
stopped on dispose so a trailing beat never claims life for an orphan
- taskLifecycle: isLivenessSignalFresh / isDelegatedChildLive reducers
- check-task-lifecycle model: heartbeat/expireHeartbeat actions,
heartbeat-protected landmark, invariant 8 covers either signal
- docs: task-lifecycle-model.md mapping/landmarks/invariant updated
…cord
What:
- writeAdministrativeRepair now applies a repair delta (CHILD_REPAIR_DELTA /
PARENT_REPAIR_DELTA) to the record read under the target file's advisory
lock instead of writing the cache-derived whole record, and returns the
committed record so callers publish it to the cache.
- All four call sites (missing-child repair, replayDelegationRepairIntent
child+parent, applyDelegationRepairIntent child+parent) pass the matching
delta and cache the committed record; the partial-commit branch tracks the
committed child instead of a written boolean.
- createTaskWithHistoryItem re-claims local session ownership after aborting
the old instance that shares the task id.
- Tests: peer-field preservation regression for the repair delta, an
ownership re-claim ordering regression, and a request-snapshot suite that
diverges requestModelInfo from getModel().
- Drop the unused `args` rest parameter in the markLocallyActive spec's
getCurrentTask double (pre-existing lint error in a file this commit edits).
Why:
A peer window can write other fields of the same task (pendingAction, token
and cost totals, childIds, apiConfigName) between this store's repair decision
and the advisory lock. Writing the whole cached record discarded those fields
permanently and re-published the stale copy to the cache. Separately, the
rehydrated task reuses the old task's id and the old instance's dispose
releases that id into releasedLocalOwnershipIds, which blocks the new task's
own active-status write from re-claiming it, leaving the resumed session
unowned for the whole async gap before its first persisted write.
Impact:
Cross-instance repairs no longer lose peer-written fields; the resumed
rehydration session stays owned so periodic delegation reconciliation cannot
repair it as a crash orphan mid-resume.
Addresses CodeRabbit threads PRRT_kwDOSK-bwM6rtJE4 (Major),
PRRT_kwDOSK-bwM6rtJE5 (Trivial), PRRT_kwDOSK-bwM6rtJE8 (Minor).
…er 3.9
What:
- writeAdministrativeRepair keeps the cache-derived record as the write
payload and applies the repair delta on top of the locked disk record, so a
write path that bypasses the merge callback still lands the target state
while peer-written fields survive the merge.
- Replay and intent-application initialise their committed records from the
shared CHILD_REPAIR_DELTA / PARENT_REPAIR_DELTA constants instead of
re-spelling the lifecycle fields.
- Reformat TaskHistoryStore.ts and ClineProvider.ts with the prettier version
the merged main now pins.
Why:
Upstream main added a `pnpm format:check` step to the compile job and bumped
prettier to 3.9.10. Both files were already over the 120-column limit in
places, so the merge commit fails format:check and any change to them must
carry the reflow. Keeping the payload as the repaired record also restores the
"write lands the target state even without the merge callback" property that
the fault-injection specs assert.
Impact:
No behavior change beyond the previous commit. Formatting now passes on the
files this branch edits.
Co-authored-by: CodeRabbit <noreply@coderabbit.ai>
What:
- Run prettier 3.9.10 over docs/architecture/task-lifecycle-model.md,
scripts/check-task-lifecycle.ts, src/core/task/Task.ts, and
src/core/task/__tests__/Task.persistence.spec.ts.
Why:
Main added a `pnpm format:check` step to the compile job and bumped prettier
to 3.9.10. These four files were already over the 120-column limit before this
branch merged main, so the compile job fails on formatting alone even though
the merge was textually clean. Verified against the CI job log, which names
exactly these four paths.
Impact:
Formatting only: `git diff -w` shows no semantic change, the eight
lifecycle model checks still pass, and the Task/Task.persistence suites
(263 tests) still pass.
Co-authored-by: CodeRabbit <noreply@coderabbit.ai>
What: flatten the control flow the Zoo-Code-Org#1495 fix added without changing behavior.
TaskHistoryStore: collapse recordTaskActivity's nested HeartbeatSkipError
branch and cache-publish block, flatten getChildFileMtimeMs's ENOENT/lock
nesting, flatten invalidate's parse block, flatten
runPeriodicDelegationReconciliation and trackLocalSessionOwnership, flatten
applyDelegationRepairIntent's RepairAbortedError branch, and inline the
parent-mtime grace guard's isLivenessSignalFresh call. ClineProvider: hoist
the scheduleTask handoff out of createTaskWithHistoryItemUnlocked's try so
the eager-claim rollback no longer re-indents the pre-existing rehydrate and
stack branches, merge the two reopenParentFromDelegation .then handlers, and
collapse the delegation-rollback release try/catch. Task.ts: collapse the two
reasoning-block narrowing guards to single-line early returns.
Why: the mutation-diff gate allows 500 changed executable lines
(scripts/stryker-diff.mjs) and the branch was at 539, so CI could not pass.
Every call site, log string, and lifecycle predicate the specs pin is
preserved: this is a scope cut of structure, not of the fix.
Impact: 539 -> 498 changed executable lines (TaskHistoryStore 362->344,
ClineProvider 95->73, Task 69, taskLifecycle 11, history.ts 1). No behavior
change: the live-child-delegation fix, the writeAdministrativeRepair
repair-delta fix and its regression test, and the lifecycle reducer changes
are all intact. Focused suites 219 + 118 pass, lifecycle:model-check 4/4,
tsc/eslint/prettier clean, eslint-suppressions.json unchanged.
…and repair races
What:
- Task.ts stops the delegated-child liveness heartbeat on the non-abort
rejection paths of startTask and resumeTaskFromHistory. ClineProvider's
cleanupFailedHistoryTask no longer returns early for non-settlement errors,
so every failed scheduled run tears the task down.
- isLivenessSignalFresh bounds the future side of the freshness window
(Math.abs(now - timestamp) < thresholdMs). getChildFileMtimeMs moves its
transient-stat sentinel one millisecond inside that bound so it still reads
as live, and both comments document the threat model.
- assertChildRepairPreconditions aborts when the locked disk record is absent,
so mergeHistoryDelta can no longer resurrect a peer-deleted child from the
stale cache copy. writeAdministrativeRepair releases a local ownership claim
that lands after the guard but before the commit, because the guard's own
check is synchronous and cannot see it.
- recordTaskActivity's merge callback skips a beat whose ownership was
released, so a heartbeat queued before markLocallyInactive cannot refresh
mtime and lastActivityAt for a session that is gone.
Why:
Each of these let a dead delegated child keep looking alive, or let a repair
recreate a record a peer had deleted. The parent then stayed delegated to a
child no session owned, across startup and every periodic tick, which is the
Zoo-Code-Org#1469 bug class this PR exists to close.
Impact:
Production change holds the mutation-diff gate at 498 of 500 changed
executable lines, the same total the branch carried before this round. New
coverage lives in spec files, which the gate excludes. Lifecycle mutations stay
in the shared reducers; the model doc and its liveness comment now describe the
bounded window and the sentinel.
…al claim
What: `safeWriteJson` gains a synchronous `preCommit` hook that runs
immediately before the commit rename with no await in between, and
`writeAdministrativeRepair` uses it to re-run the repair guard and the
in-window ownership predicate at the commit point. The post-commit claim
release is removed.
Why: the round-1 guard was merge-time only. `markLocallyActive` is
synchronous and takes no lock, so a claim landing during the temp-write
awaits was invisible to it: the repair committed the child as
`interrupted` and the parent as `active`, and releasing the claim
afterwards undid nothing. A live resumed child was left interrupted and
orphaned. Re-running the guard at the commit point aborts with NOTHING
committed, so the parent half never runs and the live session keeps its
record, its claim, and its delegation link. The same hook closes the
missing-child cross-lock gap: the child-file absence check is now
re-evaluated immediately before the parent rename.
Impact: both the in-pass (`applyDelegationRepairIntent`) and replay
(`replayDelegationRepairIntent`) paths get the protocol, since both write
through `writeAdministrativeRepair`. The regression test now asserts
child `active`, parent `delegated`, and the claim retained. Stale
sentinel comments (threshold-1 / strict bound) are corrected in
taskLifecycle.ts, its spec, TaskHistoryStore, and the lifecycle checker.
What: safeWriteJson's catch block no longer unlinks the backup file when the
rollback rename fails; it logs the kept path instead. The abort-resume liveness
test drops the child.start() call and asserts the resume prologue ran.
Why: when preCommit aborts, the target is already renamed to a backup. If the
rollback rename then fails, the old cleanup unlinked that backup, destroying the
only remaining copy of the original file. The abort-resume test called start()
before run(), which sets _started so run() resolved early and
resumeTaskFromHistory never ran, leaving the test vacuous.
Impact: a failed rollback now leaves a recoverable .bak_*.tmp file next to the
target and names it in the error log, instead of losing user data. The resume
test now fails if the resume path is bypassed. No behavior change on the
success path.
What: the parent-half claim test now also asserts the child record reached
`interrupted` before the parent half aborted. The doc block on
`writeAdministrativeRepair` splits the abort outcome by half instead of
claiming nothing is committed in both cases.
Why: the test asserted only the parent half, so it passed whether or not the
child half committed. Skipping the child write left every existing assertion
green, which means the "child half committed, parent half aborted" shape the
test is named for was never pinned.
Impact: test-only assertion plus a comment correction. No production behavior
change; the changed-executable-line count drops from 496 to 493 because the
rewritten comment sits inside a counted span.
…han repair target
What:
- task-lifecycle-model.md invariant 8: state the freshness window as symmetric
(anything inside the threshold in either direction is fresh) instead of
claiming only the transient-stat sentinel counts as a fresh future timestamp.
- check-task-lifecycle.ts: stop gating window-local interrupt/complete/abandon on
`heartbeatAlive` (the heartbeat runs for the child's whole active lifetime, so
the owning session can complete its own child while the beat is fresh), and
scope the "no link clearing while the child is live" transition invariant to
`reconcileStartup`, the only transition that must respect the ownership guard.
- Move the delegated-parent repair target into `taskLifecycle.ts` as
`DELEGATED_PARENT_REPAIR_FIELDS`; `TaskHistoryStore` writes it as its under-lock
delta and the model checker derives its repaired parent from it, so the two
cannot drift.
- ClineProvider.markLocallyActive.spec.ts: assert the exact child id for the
claim and the single release in the delegation-rollback test.
Why:
Review threads 4429868237, 4429868239, 4429868242, 4429868255. The model claimed
a guard it did not implement: with the heartbeat gate in place the checker
explored 1659 states and never exercised local completion of a heartbeating
child; unscoped, the transition invariant rejected `complete(child-a)` as a
violation. Both are false statements about production.
Impact:
Model checker 4359 reachable states (was 1659 with the gate), 11/11 actions,
5/5 landmarks, 6/6 witnesses. Counted changed executable lines 496 -> 497 of 500.
… failed resume
What: reopenParentFromDelegation's scheduler callback catch arm now calls
taskHistoryStore.markLocallyInactive(parentTaskId) and
parentInstance["stopLivenessHeartbeat"]() before logging, notifying, and
rethrowing. Two counted lines in ClineProvider.ts (74 -> 76), extension
package 496 -> 498/500; types unchanged at 1/500.
Why: Task.resumeAfterDelegation starts the liveness heartbeat and has no
catch of its own, so a non-abort rejection leaves the interval running and
the eager local-ownership claim held. The claim keeps the parent id out of
the periodic delegation repair set for the window's lifetime, and the beats
keep lastActivityAt fresh so peer startup repair treats the dead session as
live. startTask (:3203) and resumeTaskFromHistory (:3481) already stop the
beat on the same class of failure; this arm is the provider-side handler for
exactly this rejection, so it owns both handles. Bracket notation is the
repo convention for private access, so Task's visibility is unchanged.
Impact: CodeRabbit thread 4429868250. A failed parent resume is now
repairable in-window and cross-window. Rejection propagation, the user
error message, and the absence of TaskDelegationResumed are unchanged.
Tests: the markLocallyActive spec's admitted-resume-failure case now asserts
the concrete parent id and a single stopLivenessHeartbeat call (it
previously pinned the leak). The history-resume-delegation spec pins the
same pair. Mutation proofs: deleting either new line fails its own
assertion; swapping parentTaskId for childTaskId fails the id assertion.
Swapping the two lines survives, so ordering is deliberately not pinned
(both calls are synchronous, target disjoint objects, and neither depends
on the other's effect).
What: the crash-orphan delegation repair now writes only the child record
(child -> interrupted). The parent is left `delegated` with `awaitingChildId`
and `delegatedToId` intact, so the delegation link is never severed. The
durable repair intent drops `target.parentStatus`, the replay matcher treats
"parent still delegated to the same child" as the terminal state, and a legacy
journal that still names `parentStatus: "active"` replays under the new rule
instead of completing the old unlink.
Why: the repair was two independent locked writes (child, then parent) against
two per-file advisory locks. Nothing coupled the halves, so a peer window that
resumed the child between them was invisible to the parent-only under-lock
guard and the unlink committed. `reopenParentFromDelegation` then aborted on
the `awaitingChildId` mismatch, so the resumed child's completion was never
routed into its parent. No disk signal can close that window: the repair's own
child write freshens the child mtime, and a cross-process claim is not
observable at all. Stopping at the child half removes the window instead of
narrowing it, because every peer-resume interleaving then finds an intact link.
The resulting state is not new: `cancelTask` already produces it mid-session
("mark the child interrupted and leave parent delegated with awaitingChildId
intact") and the reconciler already preserves it. Recovery paths are child
resume+completion, re-delegation over an interrupted awaited child, deletion of
the child record (the missing-child repair is now the only path that
reactivates the parent), or user cancel.
Impact: a crash-orphan parent is no longer automatically returned to active; it
stays delegated-awaiting-interrupted-child until one of those paths runs. The
lifecycle model gains invariant 9 (the repair writes the child half only) and
its crash-orphan landmark now requires the parent link to survive; the checker
drops from 4359 to 3423 reachable states because the repair no longer produces
a second parent state per orphan. Extension mutation gate 498 -> 490 counted
lines (types unchanged at 1).
Six new regression tests in TaskHistoryStore.reconciliation.spec.ts fail on the
previous head and pass here: parent link preserved in cache and on disk (parent
file byte-identical), the repaired parent accepting the child's completion
through the shared reducer, replay writing no parent record, replay clearing the
journal with no writes when the child is already interrupted, a legacy
parentStatus intent not unlinking, and a legacy already-unlinked intent being
quarantined without touching either record.
What: one replay test takes the delegation repair journal off disk after a
real in-pass repair (a failing onWrite retains it past the child write) and
asserts the written target is exactly `{"childStatus":"interrupted"}` with no
`parentStatus` key, then feeds those same bytes through
readDelegationRepairIntent -> replayDelegationRepairIntent. The initialize()
step-2 comment now says "child-half repair" instead of "two-record repair".
Why: the makeRepairIntent helper still emits the legacy
`target.parentStatus: "active"` shape, so every existing replay test exercised
the legacy-tolerant parse path and no test pinned the journal production
actually writes. Store-outcome assertions alone cannot catch a regression that
widens the written target again: re-tightening isDelegationRepairIntent to
require `parentStatus === "active"` leaves every other test green, and this one
fails. The comment described a two-record repair that no longer exists.
Impact: the new-shape journal is pinned byte-for-byte and the schema guard's
relaxation is discriminating. Test-only plus one comment line; extension
mutation gate 490 -> 490 counted lines (the comment sits on a non-executable
line, the test file is gate-excluded).
…ll test
What: the "non-active runtime write DELETES local ownership" kill test now
wires `spySyncMtimeProbe` (via the existing `installStaleChildInjector`) and
runs its whole scenario on ONE store instance instead of reloading into a
second one.
Why: two independent defects in the same test.
1. The recurring windows-latest flake. The repair's under-lock guard
(`assertChildRepairPreconditions`) re-reads the child mtime synchronously
via `statChildFileMtimeMsSync`. The test injected only the async
`getChildFileMtimeMs` age, so the guard read the REAL file mtime and
committed only while that mtime happened to sit more than
LIVE_CHILD_MTIME_THRESHOLD_MS below the fake clock. Measured margin on this
machine: 300135ms against a 300000ms threshold, i.e. ~135ms of slack. A
slow fs poll phase on a contended runner eats it, the repair aborts, and
`flushUntil` starves with "final state: child=active parent=delegated" —
the exact failure seen at 41ffaaf. Wiring the sync probe makes the stale
signal exact, so the only thing that can stop the repair is the ownership
release the test exists to assert.
2. The kill property was vacuous. `locallyActiveTaskIds` is per-instance
(`private readonly locallyActiveTaskIds = new Set<string>()`), and the test
disposed the store that recorded the ownership release before reloading
into a fresh one. The fresh store started unowned, so the tick repaired the
orphan under EVERY mutant: measured, all of ConditionalExpression->true,
StringLiteral->"", LogicalOperator and the dropped delete survived. Keeping
one store and refreshing it with `reconcile({ forceRefresh: true })` makes
the release observable, and the added `ownedIds(s).has(childId)` assertion
pins it directly.
The title now claims only the mutants verified to die here (L569 CallExpression,
L566 LogicalOperator). The two always-DELETE mutants are killed by the sibling
"removes the id from locallyActiveTaskIds" test, which asserts the ADD branch;
both were re-verified red under that sibling.
Impact: tests only. No production file, no suppression change, no gate impact.
Reproduced the CI failure before the change by raising the threshold 200ms
(age 300180ms vs threshold 300200ms) and confirmed the same test passes 3/3
under that same forced condition afterwards.
… one stale comment
What: retitle the four kill tests whose titles claimed mutants they do not
kill, re-anchor the L566/L569 gate labels to their current location, and fix
the stale trailing comment on the always-DELETE block.
Why: the audit found 4 of 20 kill-claiming tests overclaiming. Two name
mutant classes Stryker 10.0.0 never generates (`'-' -> '%'`: the real
replacement is `+`; `Math.ceil`: no mutator targets it and the function never
existed in the file). Two name real mutants that survive that test:
`LogicalOperator->&&` on an explicit "active" write evaluates to "active", and
`false && false` leaves the tick guard open. Each test does kill a real
mutant, just not the claimed one.
Impact: titles now match delivered kills, so a mutation-gate survivor report
points at a test that can actually kill it. The 120/120 suite is unchanged;
this is title and comment text plus one added negative assertion on the
repaired orphan's ownership.

Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
Reliability
Active delegated tasks are better protected from recovery interruptions, while abandoned child tasks can be stopped without breaking the parent task’s delegation.
Failed task restoration and scheduling now clean up task state more consistently.
Conversation History
Reasoning content is preserved or omitted according to model settings, with improved support for structured reasoning details.
Retry Handling
Matching retry-delay information is reflected in countdowns for rate-limit errors.
The changes add delegated-task heartbeats and ownership-aware history reconciliation. They update task conversation-history typing and reasoning handling, narrow provider types, and add a pre-commit callback to safe JSON writes.

Summary
Liveness signals and lifecycle rules packages/types/src/history.ts, src/core/task-persistence/taskLifecycle.ts, src/core/task-persistence/__tests__/taskLifecycle.spec.ts, docs/architecture/task-lifecycle-model.md
History records add optional lastActivityAt. Lifecycle helpers treat either a recent file modification time or recent heartbeat as liveness, with freshness bounded in both timestamp directions.
Delegated child tasks record activity every minute while active. The heartbeat stops on disposal and non-abort startup or resume failures.
Ownership-aware history reconciliation src/core/task-persistence/TaskHistoryStore.ts

Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Focused regression coverage exists for the changed behavior. taskLifecycle.spec.ts covers fresh, stale, absent, boundary, and far-future liveness signals. TaskHistoryStore.reconciliation.spec.ts covers startup and periodic reconciliation, mtime and heartbeat probes, child-only repair, ownership release, lock races, missing records, and persisted outcomes. ClineProvider.markLocallyActive.spec.ts covers preparation failures, scheduler rejection, skipped continuations, rollback, and failed resumes. Task.persistence.spec.ts covers heartbeat start/stop, abort, disposal, standalone tasks, and resume paths. Focused tests also cover reasoning guards, RetryInfo fallback/error paths, profile fallbacks, and safeWriteJson commit rollback. The final PR commits improve probe determinism and correct mutation-test titles; they do not introduce an uncovered behavior. No durable visible UI change requires a Playwright snapshot.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path introduces a concrete security-boundary failure. The reviewed changes add liveness and ownership tracking, guarded persistence repairs, heartbeat handling, type narrowing, and cleanup. The diff adds no secret or PII literals, dynamic execution APIs, or approval/allowlist bypasses.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
No concrete changed lifecycle leak or duplicate-work path is present. Task starts one idempotent delegated-child heartbeat, clears it in disposeOnce(), and stops it on non-abort start/resume failures. TaskHistoryStore clears its reconciliation timer and watcher on disposal, and its periodic delegation pass skips disposed or already-running work. Provider scheduler rejection and failed-resume paths release local ownership; failed history-task scheduling also disposes the task.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The new periodic repair path can sever a live delegation link during a child-file rename window. startPeriodicReconciliation() now calls runPeriodicDelegationReconciliation() (TaskHistoryStore.ts:1507-1517). The missing-child branch writes the parent as active after assertMissingChildRepairPreconditions() sees no child file (lines 1158-1162), but that check does not inspect the child file's fresh .lock. If another window is creating the child with safeWriteJson, its atomic rename temporarily removes the child file while holding that lock. A stale parent can then be committed as active, and the child can reappear as an orphan. The changed multi-record repair is therefore not safe across the non-atomic file boundary.
Resolution
Guard missing-child repair against a fresh child advisory lock before committing the parent. Treat a fresh <child history path>.lock as an in-progress child write and throw RepairAbortedError; retry on the next reconciliation pass. Add a regression test that holds the child lock while the child file is absent and verifies that the parent remains delegated.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template sections for related issue, description, test procedure, gate and verification, and evidence. It states what changed, why, and how it was verified. However, it does not contain a 'Closes: #' issue link. It refers to blocking PR #1495 and to internal evidence files, but no approved GitHub issue is linked. The checklist is also not marked, and the Get in Touch and Documentation Updates sections are missing. The description also does not account for the large production changes in the raw summary, so it may not cover the whole changeset.
Resolution
Add a 'Closes: #<issue number>' line under 'Related GitHub Issue' that links to an approved issue. Complete the Pre-Submission Checklist. State whether documentation updates are needed under 'Documentation Updates'. Add a Discord username under 'Get in Touch'. Confirm that the description covers all changed files, or split the production changes into a separate PR.
Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names a test change in task-persistence and two concrete actions: wiring both mtime probes and correcting four mutation-kill test titles. The changeset summary describes a large production and test change (liveness heartbeats, reconciliation, ClineProvider ownership claims, Task reasoning types), and the PR objectives describe only a test-only change to TaskHistoryStore.reconciliation.spec.ts. The title is therefore partially related to the stated objectives, but it does not match the much larger changeset in the raw summary. The title also uses the 'test(...)' prefix and is 92 characters long, which exceeds a short title.
Resolution
Confirm which changes this PR contains. The PR objectives describe a test-only change, but the raw summary lists production changes to TaskHistoryStore, Task, ClineProvider, taskLifecycle, and safeWriteJson. Either narrow the PR to the test-only change, or write a title that covers the main production change. Shorten the title to a single clear sentence, for example: 'test(task-persistence): fix flaky reconciliation test and mutation-kill titles'.

Skip a liveness tick while the previous beat is still pending.

src/core/task-persistence/TaskHistoryStore.ts:618-621 Minor · Data Integrity & Integration · Poor tradeoff
Guard the missing-child repair against a child that starts during the parent commit.
The missing-child repair checks that the child task file is absent in preCommit. It then renames the parent file with no await between the check and the rename. The child task writer locks only the child task path, not the parent path. A child first write that lands between that check and the parent rename is not observed. The parent then commits as active with awaitingChildId and delegatedToId cleared. When the child completes, reopenParentFromDelegation finds that awaitingChildId no longer matches and returns without resuming the parent.
This PR adds a periodic caller for the repair. The five-minute tick runs the same repair during live sessions. Before this change, the repair ran only at startup. The same race can now occur mid-session, for a delegated parent whose child has not yet been written.
The correction must coordinate the parent repair with child creation. The child writer and the repair need a shared guard, so that a child write cannot land between the absence check and the parent commit. Adding another check before the rename does not close the gap. No localized edit that fully closes it is established.

Assert the rename order, and add an abort test where no target file exists.
The test titled "should run preCommit after the merge callback and before the commit rename" records only merge and preCommit, so it never observes fs.rename. Moving preCommit after the rename at src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts:139 still passes it. Record whether the target exists inside preCommit with fsSyncActual.existsSync, and assert that result.
The current abort test writes a prior file. The backup rollback then restores that file, so the test cannot detect a commit-before-check ordering. Without a prior file, a throwing preCommit leaves the replacement committed at the target path. acquireFileLock uses realpath: false, so the lock is acquired on an absent target and the write reaches preCommit. Add a test that removes the target before the call. Assert that preCommit ran, so an earlier lock failure cannot satisfy the test:
it("leaves no replacement committed when preCommit throws and no prior file exists",async()=>{awaitfs.rm(currentTestFilePath,{force: true})constpreCommit=vi.fn(()=>{thrownewError("preCommit abort")})awaitexpect(safeWriteJson(currentTestFilePath,{value: 1},{ preCommit })).rejects.toThrow("preCommit abort")expect(preCommit).toHaveBeenCalledTimes(1)expect(awaitfileExists(currentTestFilePath)).toBe(false)constleftovers=(awaitfs.readdir(tempDir)).filter((name)=>name.includes(".tmp"))expect(leftovers).toEqual([])})

Add an ordering assertion to the child-claim delegation test.
The test at lines 852-868 is titled "claims the child before the parent delegation write". Its comment says the claim must run before the parent is persisted as delegated. Its three assertions check only that markLocallyActive received the child ID, that schedule ran once, and that markLocallyInactive was not called. None of them compares call order with the parent write, which is atomicReadAndUpdate. A change that moves the claim after that write would pass this test.
The file already checks ordering in other tests with mock.invocationCallOrder, for example lines 363-364 and 383-384. Add the same check here:

Add a child-record check to the reconciliation invariant.
Startup reconciliation can interrupt an active child whose liveElsewhere flag is set while the parent stays delegated, and the checker does not reject that transition. checkTransitionInvariants checks only the parent link for reconcileStartup. The landmark at lines 100-107 is a state predicate that does not inspect transitions. The heartbeat-only scenario at lines 703-712 sets liveElsewhere to false, so it does not exercise this path. The current model returns an identity transition for live children (lines 364-366), so this is a coverage gap in the checker, not a current model defect. The header comment at lines 94-99 says the landmark and invariant formalize "not repaired", which overstates what they enforce.

Do not claim local ownership for writes from a window that does not run the task.
A rename or other metadata write to an active child calls trackLocalSessionOwnership through upsertCore. The claim stays until this store is recreated or a non-active status is written for that id. After the owning window crashes, or completes the child, periodic repair in this window keeps skipping the child. Limit the claim to writes from the running session. Metadata writers such as renameTaskWithId should not add it.

writers such as renameTaskWithId do not claim ownership, while session writes
continue to do so.

Scope the ownership release to the instance that holds it.
Task.disposeOnce releases the ID with markLocallyInactive(taskId). If a same-ID replacement claimed the ID first, that release erases its claim and blocks re-claims and heartbeats. Reopening the task while the removed instance is still in abortTaskOnce triggers this. Track ownership per instance, or skip the release when a newer claim exists.

Update markLocallyInactive and its Task.disposeOnce call so releasing a task ID
only removes ownership held by that specific task instance; preserve any claim
made by a newer same-ID replacement.

Reject heartbeat writes when the disk record id differs from taskId.
The heartbeat merge accepts any active record at the task's history path. If that record has a different id, the heartbeat sets its lastActivityAt and replaces cache[taskId] with that record. The sibling clearPendingActionIfMatching rejects this case under the same lock, but recordTaskActivity does not.

Document the failed-rollback case in the preCommit comment.
The preCommit comment says a throw restores the previous file. If preCommit throws and the rollback rename also fails, the catch block keeps the backup and does not restore the target. The comment does not state this case, so callers that rely on the target surviving an abort can find it missing.
Keep the code as written. Its failed-rollback behavior is tested and intended. Correct the comment:
📝 Suggested comment correction
- * aborts the write with nothing committed and the previous file restored.+ * aborts the write with nothing committed. The previous file is restored,+ * unless the rollback rename also fails; its content then stays in a backup.

Make the claim check and the rename commit mutually exclusive.
preCommit runs before await fs.rename, but the rename completes later. A markLocallyActive call during that wait is not seen, and the repair still commits. The child is then written and cached as interrupted while a live session owns it. The preCommit comment promises that nothing can interleave before the rename, which this window contradicts.

Make the preCommit claim check and the fs.rename commit mutually exclusive so
markLocallyActive cannot claim ownership while the rename is pending; use a
shared synchronization mechanism that covers both the check and rename,
preserving the existing commit behavior when no live session claims the child.

What
Three things in one test-only change to
src/core/task-persistence/__tests__/TaskHistoryStore.reconciliation.spec.ts:Dual-probe wiring kills the 135ms-slack window flake class. The
non-active runtime write DELETES local ownershiptest wired only the async mtime probe, so the under-lock sync re-check read the real file mtime. Measured at the base head, the guard sat atage=300135.07msagainstthreshold=300000ms— 135ms of slack. A slow fs poll phase onwindows-latesteats that margin and the tick never repairs, which is theflushUntil ... not satisfiedfailure. The test now reuses the existinginstallStaleChildInjectorhelper, which wires both probes.Vacuous-kill root fix.
locallyActiveTaskIdsis per-instance. The base test recorded the ownership release on stores, calleds.dispose(), then reloaded into a freshs2— which starts unowned, so the tick repaired the orphan under every mutant. All four mutants survived; the kill property was vacuous. Steps 1-4 now share one store instance vias.reconcile({ forceRefresh: true }), and the title claims only the mutants verified to die there.Four audit title corrections. An audit of all 20 kill-claiming tests in this spec found 4 overclaiming. Two name mutant classes Stryker 10.0.0 never generates (
'-' -> '%': the real replacement is+;Math.ceil: no mutator targets it). Two name real mutants that survive that test (LogicalOperator->&&on an explicit"active"write evaluates to"active";false && falseleaves the tick guard open). Each test does kill a real mutant, just not the claimed one. Titles now match delivered kills, and the stale trailing comment on the always-DELETE block is corrected. Why
Recurring CI flake root cause, per
coder-report-w5-q3-probe.md. The flake was reproducible on demand: raisingLIVE_CHILD_MTIME_THRESHOLD_MSby 200ms produced the CI failure byte-identically with no other change, which proves the guard margin is what the test was racing. Fixing the wiring alone would have left the test permanently green but mutation-blind, so the vacuous-kill fix lands in the same commit.Gate
