feat(task): observation registry with read completeness (U3, #1375) - #1912
This PR adds the bookkeeping that lets a write know whether the model actually saw the file: a task-local observation registry records when a full-file observation of a path exists, with a version token and a completion state. A partial read does not make a destination observable; move retargeting (carrying the source's completeness onto a destination) lands with the move call site in the consuming unit.
Without this, a later guarded write cannot tell "the model read this whole file" from "the model saw a slice" - the difference between allowing and refusing a full-file overwrite. It is the third of nine PRs for epic #1375 (chain tracked on #1991).
A task-local observation registry: registration, versioning and completion of observations, scoped to one task. Observations carry their creation timestamp; expiry is deferred to the consumer units that need a retention policy, matching the fidelity source for this unit.
A partial read never marks a path complete. Move retargeting (source -> destination, preserving the complete flag) is introduced with the move call site in the consuming unit, which carries its own behaviour tests.
A consistency port this unit carries: project-scoped safeWriteJson writes confine to a caller-supplied root (confineTo), so a project that ships .roo/mcp.json as a symlink to a file outside the workspace gets the write refused instead of replacing the outside file.
Deliberately not wired yet: the registry is not connected to production read, move, or guarded-write call sites here - those call sites are introduced by the units after this one, each with its own behaviour tests. The tests here exercise the registry's own contract.
Why the diff looks bigger than the change: the chain is non-cumulative - this branch is based on main and carries its own copy of the earlier units' content, which the GitHub diff shows as context.
Review focus:src/core/task/observationRegistry.ts and its spec, plus the confineTo parameter in src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts.
Test Procedure
From the repository root, with dependencies installed:
Manual check: point a project at a repo that ships .roo/mcp.json as a symlink to a file outside the workspace, edit a project MCP setting, and confirm the write is refused instead of replacing the outside file (the win32 symlink case is skipped in the unit test and verified this way).
Environment: Ubuntu 22.04 and Windows 11; unit layer only.

The Persistence Integrity row implemented at this head: safeWriteJson clears the staged path when safeWriteText reports PostCommitDurabilityError (the commit rename consumed it - it is the published target's former name), so the catch cleanup never unlinks a path this write no longer owns; the durability error rethrows and the target keeps its new content. Regression test: parent-directory fsync fails after the commit rename - target stays present with the new JSON, no unlink fires at the consumed staging path. Negative control: removing the guard reddens exactly that test. 114/119 with the file-safety suites (5 pre-existing skips). The Security Boundaries row remains the registered handle-relative family (owner-unit fix, precedent 6106959976).
Refreshed onto main 4f1dee18e (merge 2525fc218, no conflicts; lint-gate commit drops imports main's side orphaned and re-adds the safeWriteJson import the merged McpHub.spec mocks need). CodeRabbit's two new threads are fixed and resolved at 6aed30221: the injected fsync failure now targets a real directory descriptor with the wrapper's cause asserted, and the staging-release assertions compare the exact directory path. All six required checks green at 6aed30221.
The durability probe was reworked for portability (6953d6bcb): the injected fsync failure is triggered by watching the commit rename itself - the parent-directory fsync is the only fsync that runs after it - so the SUT opens and closes its own real directory handle and no descriptor is fabricated; the cause assertion is unchanged. 41832aca5 ports the resolveLockKey ENOENT-only fallback fix and the finally-block spy restoration from U2. All six required checks green.

The backup copy is not a recovery source. Changes to that cross-unit contract belong to the chain-level decision tracked in easonLiangWorldedtech/Zoo-Code#41, not a consumer-only cleanup.

Bug Fixes
Project-scoped MCP configuration changes are restricted to the workspace. Writes are rejected if no workspace location is available; global configuration writes remain unaffected.
JSON writes check that the destination remains within its configured scope and has not moved before publishing, reducing the risk of writing to an unintended location.
Improved handling of write failures, backups, cleanup, and durability errors helps preserve existing files and content that was successfully published. Writes through symbolic links resolve and use the destination consistently.
The pull request adds a task-local observation registry and updates text and JSON file publishing. JSON writes can enforce path confinement, use resolved paths for locking and staging, and delegate backup and commit operations to safeWriteText. Project MCP writes provide a workspace root; global writes remain unconstrained.

Security Architecture Review
Security architecture risk:🟡 Moderate · up to 5bfb8
The writer improves permission preservation and recovery reporting, but changes both where configuration updates land and what a rejected write means. Project symlinks can redirect updates outside the project, and a post-commit failure can leave saved MCP disable settings inconsistent with active connections. Exposure remains bounded by the extension host’s filesystem permissions; attacker control of deployment paths is not established.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: Project-scoped MCP updates now publish to an existing symlink’s referent without authorizing that resolved destination against the project scope. At the base, publication replaced the leaf symlink rather than modifying its referent. An actor able to control that link could redirect a user-triggered project update to another existing JSON file whose directory is writable by the extension host. Deployment attacker influence and an intended containment policy remain unproven, so this is a conditional scope-expansion concern.
Medium · security · inferred: A parent-directory fsync failure now rejects JSON publication after the new configuration is visible. When disabling a connected MCP server, that rejection skips the subsequent in-memory disable and disconnection. Configuration watchers suppress programmatic change/create events, and resetting the suppression flag does not itself reconcile configuration. Consequently, the saved disabled state can coexist with an active connection until another refresh, retry, or event. Actual persistence across a crash and watcher-event timing remain filesystem-dependent.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — For the inspected project-MCP path, redirected publication can affect an existing JSON referent outside the workspace when its directory is writable by the extension host. No new operating-system identity or privilege grant is shown. The lifecycle concern affects live MCP connections managed by that host, not a demonstrated cross-tenant or cross-service boundary.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The conditional redirection path is workspace-controlled leaf symlink, project configuration update, realpath resolution, and referent replacement. The separate revocation failure path is disable request, committed JSON rename, directory-fsync rejection, and skipped live disconnection. Neither path establishes a verified attacker exploit in the supplied deployment context.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Dangling links and non-ENOENT resolution failures are rejected. Supplied staging must be a regular non-symlink file beside the resolved target. These checks do not authorize the referent’s ownership scope. As counterevidence to claiming a new command-execution privilege, existing MCP initialization reads project configuration and enabled stdio configurations supply commands to a subprocess transport.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Existing target mode preservation improves final-file permissions. JSON still streams into a caller-created temporary file before mode correction, so the new private self-staging directory does not protect this route. Staging validation also remains pathname-based across later open and rename operations. These residual conditions predate the delegation class of behavior; deployment exploitability is unresolved. Windows DACL preservation remains explicitly best-effort.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Make resolved-target authorization a caller-owned policy: project-scoped updates could reject out-of-root referents or require explicit authorization for intentional external links. Reconcile live security state after committed-but-not-durable publication rather than treating every rejection as an uncommitted write.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "feat(task): observation registry with read completeness (U3, #1375)" names the main change: a task-scoped file observation registry that records version, timestamp, and completeness. The changeset adds ObservationRegistry, its tests, and Task wiring, which matches the title. The title also includes a unit label and an epic number, which add noise but do not make it misleading. The title also does not mention the confineTo safeWriteJson port, which is a secondary change.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's main sections: linked issue (Closes: #2018), description, test procedure with commands, and the pre-submission checklist. It explains the registry scope, the deferred wiring, and the confineTo port. Gaps: the Discord username under Get in Touch is not provided, and the description is long and includes process detail (chain ordering, budget counts, CI status) that is not needed for reviewers. Several sentences use contractions or dense phrasing, and the template asks for Simplified Technical English. The description is mostly complete, so the check passes.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Direct issue #2018 requires: (a) registration, versioning, and completion state scoped to one task; (b) creation timestamps; (c) a partial read never marks a path complete; (d) move retargeting deferred to the consuming unit; (e) no production call-site wiring in this unit. Evidence at head: src/core/task/observationRegistry.ts defines FileObservation { version, observedAt, complete } and ObservationRegistry.observe/get/has/clear/size. observe() stores Date.now() as observedAt and the supplied version token, with complete defaulting to true and passable as false for partial reads. Task.ts (diff vs merge base) adds a readonly, task-owned observationRegistry instance, so each Task has an independent registry, and clears it during dispose() inside a try/catch. The registry spec covers versioning, timestamps, replacement, membership, clearing, instance independence, and completeness, including partial observations and downgrade from complete to partial. Items (d) and (e) are absent from this PR by design, as #2018 requires. Residual note: the registry does not itself enforce that internal reads carry the prior completeness. That is a caller contract, and the registry comment documents it. It is not a #2018 acceptance item for this unit.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The observation registry, its spec, and the Task.ts ownership and disposal hook implement #2018 directly. The safeWriteJson confineTo port is declared in the PR description as a unit deliverable. The later safeWriteText and safeWriteJson ancestor-identity pinning, post-commit durability handling, lock-key resolution, and McpHub confinement are file-write-safety hardening within epic #1375, which #2018 names as its parent. The PR description and objectives declare them. No change was demonstrated to be unrelated to the file-write-safety chain. Residual concern (non-blocking): the safeWriteText and safeWriteJson hardening is large relative to #2018, whose acceptance text covers only the registry. Its connection to this unit rests on the declared chain plan (#1991), not on #2018 itself. A reviewer may want to confirm that plan against the split of record.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
No changed lifecycle path leaks a resource or duplicates work. ObservationRegistry owns only an in-memory Map, and Task.disposeOnce() clears it at lines 3650-3656. The changed safe-write paths close file descriptors in finally blocks, release staging and DACL artifacts, and release the advisory lock in safeWriteJson's finally block. MCP changes only pass confinement options and do not add lifecycle resources.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
The prior allowlist-bypass finding remains unresolved. Project MCP writes pass the workspace as confineTo at src/services/mcp/McpHub.ts:2138-2141, 2226-2229, and 2438-2441. The confinement code records ancestor identities, but src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts:654-685 checks them before src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts:758 performs path-based fs.rename(tempPath, targetPath). If a workspace ancestor is replaced with a symlink after the check and before the rename, the write follows the symlink and publishes the MCP configuration outside the workspace. MCP configuration can contain server environment values and headers, so this bypasses the project allowlist and can overwrite an external file with those values. The source comments explicitly document this remaining race and the absence of a descriptor-relative publish.
Resolution
For confined writes, publish relative to verified directory handles with no-follow semantics, such as an openat/renameat-equivalent primitive. If the runtime cannot provide that primitive, fail closed for confined project writes. Add an integration test that swaps an ancestor during the final publication window and verifies that no outside file is created or modified.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The changed project MCP persistence path still has the prior confinement race. McpHub now sends project configuration writes through safeWriteJson(..., { confineTo: workspaceRoot }). safeWriteJson validates ancestor identities, then safeWriteText performs path-based fs.rename(tempPath, targetPath) at lines 757-758. If .roo or the workspace directory is replaced with a symlink after the final validation and before that rename, the rename can publish to an outside file and corrupt its persisted state. The source comments explicitly document this remaining window, and the tests cover a swap before staging, not a swap in the final validation-to-rename gap.
Resolution
Make the confinement check and publish one atomic, descriptor-relative no-follow operation using an opened authorized parent directory and handle-relative rename. If the runtime cannot provide that guarantee, refuse project-scoped writes. Add a regression test that swaps an ancestor after the final validation and before commit, then verifies that no outside file changes.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Two changed confinement branches still lack focused safeWriteJson coverage. safeWriteJson.ts:130-134 rejects a candidate equal to confineTo (relative === ""), but safeWriteJson.test.ts covers only outside targets and symlink escapes; no test uses the confinement root itself as the target. The latest commit 9de3580ea changed _ancestorIdentities at safeWriteJson.ts:166-175 to propagate non-ENOENT fs.stat failures, but no safeWriteJson test injects an fs.stat failure. The existing non-ENOENT stat test at safeWriteText.spec.ts:2057-2074 covers the lower-level revalidation path, not ancestor collection in safeWriteJson.
Resolution
Add two focused safeWriteJson tests. First, target the existing confineTo directory itself and assert ConfinedPathEscapeError, no lock or staging, and no publication. Second, inject a non-ENOENT fs.stat failure during _ancestorIdentities, assert that exact failure is propagated, and verify that merge, staging, and publication do not occur. Keep the existing ENOENT behavior covered separately.

- a caller-supplied staging path is checked for location and file type before anything is written, so an arbitrary path or a symlink cannot be published onto the target;
- a failed parent-directory fsync on POSIX is reported as PostCommitDurabilityError instead of being swallowed, so a successful return never claims durability the filesystem did not grant;
- the staged file and this write's own staging directory are released before RollbackFailureError is thrown.
Focused coverage for resolveLockKey added: canonical parent directory, a dangling-link chain, and termination at the bounded depth on a two-link cycle.
…ishTarget (U1, issue 1375)
The resolver may fall back to the given path only when lstat also reports the path as absent. An EACCES or EIO failure says nothing about whether the path is a link, so falling back would publish through a link we were not allowed to inspect. Focused tests added for both branches.
The three findings here are the same class as the ones on #1910 and are closed in the commit that owns safeWriteText.ts (c4120b057, which is an ancestor of this head):
Persistence integrity — the POSIX parent-directory fsync no longer swallows errors; a failure throws PostCommitDurabilityError, which names the target and states that the content is committed but the directory entry may not be durable.
Regression evidence — focused coverage added: realpath rejects with ENOENT and lstat rejects with EACCES, asserting the lstat error propagates instead of falling back to the link path; plus the ENOENT-on-both case that still falls back.
Lifecycle resource cleanup — the staged file and this write's own staging directory are released before RollbackFailureError is thrown, and the backup is preserved.
50 tests pass at this head; the new lstat test was verified to fail against the pre-fix file.
Re-requesting review needs a human — this token gets 404 on POST /pulls/1912/requested_reviewers for a fork PR, so the Reviews panel has to be used.
… type-sound
compile failed at the unit head on three points:
- RollbackFailureError needs a string backupPath, but the throw now happens after cleanup, so the
`string | null` narrowing was lost. The failure is now held as { error, backupPath }.
- The async lstat stand-in is built on the Stats prototype so it satisfies fsSync.Stats.
- The realpath/readlink mocks are typed to the real signatures; the readlink mock answers once
because only the link path is read.
tsc clean, 50 tests pass, ESLint --max-warnings=0 clean, no suppression change.
The read tools record the observed on-disk version through task.observationRegistry, but the field
was only declared in a later unit, so at this head the call dereferences undefined and the mocked
e2e run fails on the read_file smoke tests. The registry is introduced by this unit, so the field
belongs here.
tsc clean on this unit, 11 observationRegistry tests pass, ESLint --max-warnings=0 clean.
Regression Evidence: safeWriteText's parent-directory fs.mkdir and fs.access failures are now covered — each propagates its original error and nothing is staged or renamed (no publish). safeWriteText suite 86 passed locally.
Lifecycle Resource Cleanup: the task-owned ObservationRegistry is cleared in Task#disposeOnce(), and a disposal test asserts the per-path entry is gone after dispose. (Task.spec.ts cannot load in this borrowed-node_modules worktree — missing @ai-sdk/openai-compatible — so CI is the authority for that suite.)
Security Boundaries remains the series' registered residual window: the pinning port in this branch narrows it (verified by the new ancestor-swap tests), and the descriptor-relative primitive is tracked in #2148 / #1414 / #1991. No second implementation is added here.

Pre-merge warning on Zoo-Code-Org#1912: the backup setup awaits fs.chmod(backupPath, 0o600) and the failure enters the cleanup path without focused coverage. The new test rejects that chmod and asserts the original error propagates and no commit rename runs (nothing published). safeWriteText suite 87 passed.
The pre-merge warning asked for the cleanup assertions, not just error propagation: the partial backup is unlinked (retried once), the never-committed staged file is unlinked, and this write own staging directory is released. The test now asserts all three plus that no commit rename runs.

Review follow-ups: confineForMcpWrite treats an empty provider cwd/getWorkspacePath as no boundary and throws instead of returning undefined, so a project MCP write cannot proceed unbounded; added a regression test that the write never reaches safeWriteJson. The staging-directory cleanup test now asserts fs.rmdir on the exact directory recorded by fsSync.mkdirSync rather than a path prefix. Existing watcher-cleanup test supplies a workspace root for its project-config write. McpHub + safeWriteText specs 179 passed.
getWorkspacePath is typed to return string; the failing-case mock returns the empty string (still falsy for the fail-closed check) so check-types accepts it.

Fail the write when the publish target maps to a different lock key.
lockKey is computed at line 207, and the lock is taken on it at line 234. Under that lock, resolvedTargetPath is resolved again and then used for the merge read and the commit. If an in-scope symlink is retargeted between the two resolutions, the writer holds the lock for the old target while it merges into and commits to the new one. A writer that locks the new target directly holds a different lock, so both writers can read the same content and one update can overwrite the other.
Compare the lock key of the resolved target with the held key before the merge runs. The check fails the write instead of retrying.
Suggested fix
resolvedTargetPath = await resolvePublishTarget(absoluteFilePath)
++ // The held lock belongs to lockKey. Fail before the merge if the publish+ // target now maps to a different lock key, so no write runs under another file's lock.+ if ((await resolveLockKey(resolvedTargetPath)) !== lockKey) {+ throw new Error(`Lock key ${lockKey} no longer matches publish target ${resolvedTargetPath}`)+ }

fail the write without retrying; preserve the existing behavior when the keys

Assert the staged source of the failed commit rename.
In the failed-commit test, the fs.rename mock fails the first call by position. The test never checks that call's arguments. If a regression renamed the target to a backup before the commit, that first call would fail with the same error. The target would keep its content, and no backup copy would exist, so every current assertion would still pass.
Add an assertion that the failed call's source is the staged .new_ temp file. Clear the rename mock before the failing call, so that mock.calls[0] refers to this test's first rename.

Stage the JSON without following unverified ancestor components.
309-327: 🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Stage the JSON without following unverified ancestor components.
Staging opens the file by path after the ancestor pins are recorded and before safeWriteText checks them. If a pinned ancestor is replaced with a link to a directory outside confineTo in that window, _streamDataToFile writes the full project MCP JSON to that outside location. The payload includes every configured server entry. safeWriteText then rejects the publish at Step 2b, and cleanup removes the staged file. The write still happens. Rejection does not prevent it.
The lexical-path case has the same cause. When the target does not exist, staging uses resolvedTargetPath, but the pins are built from the canonical parent. An in-scope link on the lexical path is not pinned, so replacing that link after the pin also redirects staging.
Checking the pins again before the open does not close this window. The open still resolves the path by name. The staged file must be created in a way that does not follow components that were not verified at open time. The check that runs at publish time does not cover this write.
Suggested fix
No code patch. The required correction is to change how the staged file is created, so the open cannot follow a replaced ancestor. A check that runs before the open does not meet this requirement.

Fail closed when a pinned-path ancestor is missing.
_ancestorIdentities skips a directory when fs.stat returns ENOENT. A skipped directory is never recorded, so safeWriteText never re-checks it. If a symlink appears at that path before staging, the staged file and the commit rename land outside confineTo.
The publish creates the target's parent before it takes the lock. It pins ancestors after the lock is held. A directory is skipped only when it disappears after that mkdir. A local actor must therefore move the directory away after the lock is acquired and before the pin stat. The actor must then place a symlink at that path before the staging write. The staging write uses the lexical path, so the staged file lands outside, and the rename publishes it there.
The fix is to treat every missing component as an error. The publish has just created or verified the target's parent, so a missing component was removed during the publish.
Suggested fix
- * A component that does not exist yet (a create into a directory the publish itself will- * make) has no identity to pin, so it is skipped: there is nothing to compare, and the- * pin exists to detect a directory that WAS walked being swapped, not to forbid creating- * one.+ * Every component must exist when this runs. safeWriteJson creates the target's parent+ * before it takes the lock, so a component that is missing here was removed during the+ * publish and cannot be pinned.
- // A missing ancestor has no identity to pin, but any other stat failure means the- // walk could not verify the chain: dropping it would let a swapped-in directory- // escape the confine check, so fail closed instead of skipping the pin.- const stat = await fs.stat(dir, { bigint: true }).catch((error: unknown) => {- if (typeof error === "object" && error !== null && (error as { code?: unknown }).code === "ENOENT") {- return undefined- }- throw error- })- if (stat) {- pinned.push({ dir, dev: stat.dev, ino: stat.ino })- }+ // Every component must exist here.
It is the third of nine PRs for epic #1375 (chain tracked on #1991).

completeflag) is introduced with the move call site in the consuming unit, which carries its own behaviour tests.safeWriteJsonwrites confine to a caller-supplied root (confineTo), so a project that ships.roo/mcp.jsonas a symlink to a file outside the workspace gets the write refused instead of replacing the outside file.Deliberately not wired yet: the registry is not connected to production read, move, or guarded-write call sites here - those call sites are introduced by the units after this one, each with its own behaviour tests. The tests here exercise the registry's own contract.
Why the diff looks bigger than the change: the chain is non-cumulative - this branch is based on
mainand carries its own copy of the earlier units' content, which the GitHub diff shows as context.Review focus:
src/core/task/observationRegistry.tsand its spec, plus theconfineToparameter insrc/utils/safeWriteJson.ts.Test Procedure
From the repository root, with dependencies installed:
Manual check: point a project at a repo that ships
.roo/mcp.jsonas a symlink to a file outside the workspace, edit a project MCP setting, and confirm the write is refused instead of replacing the outside file (the win32 symlink case is skipped in the unit test and verified this way).Environment: Ubuntu 22.04 and Windows 11; unit layer only.

Post-commit durability tracking (032678d)
The Persistence Integrity row implemented at this head:
safeWriteJsonclears the staged path whensafeWriteTextreportsPostCommitDurabilityError(the commit rename consumed it - it is the published target's former name), so the catch cleanup never unlinks a path this write no longer owns; the durability error rethrows and the target keeps its new content. Regression test: parent-directory fsync fails after the commit rename - target stays present with the new JSON, no unlink fires at the consumed staging path. Negative control: removing the guard reddens exactly that test. 114/119 with the file-safety suites (5 pre-existing skips). The Security Boundaries row remains the registered handle-relative family (owner-unit fix, precedent 6106959976).CI/review round final head (6aed302)
Refreshed onto main
4f1dee18e(merge2525fc218, no conflicts; lint-gate commit drops imports main's side orphaned and re-adds thesafeWriteJsonimport the merged McpHub.spec mocks need). CodeRabbit's two new threads are fixed and resolved at6aed30221: the injected fsync failure now targets a real directory descriptor with the wrapper'scauseasserted, and the staging-release assertions compare the exact directory path. All six required checks green at6aed30221.Review round final head (41832ac)
The durability probe was reworked for portability (
6953d6bcb): the injected fsync failure is triggered by watching the commit rename itself - the parent-directory fsync is the only fsync that runs after it - so the SUT opens and closes its own real directory handle and no descriptor is fabricated; the cause assertion is unchanged.41832aca5ports the resolveLockKey ENOENT-only fallback fix and the finally-block spy restoration from U2. All six required checks green.
