fix(webview): detect dead webview renderer via heartbeat and auto-reload - #1715
Closes: #1675 (mitigation; the underlying memory-growth investigation remains in #630 / #1542).
Description
A dead webview renderer leaves Zoo Code with a gray sidebar or tab while task execution continues in the extension host. This PR detects missing renderer heartbeats and repairs the affected interface without automatically reloading the VS Code window.
The webview sends a heartbeat on mount and every 30 seconds. The extension checks every 60 seconds. A visible view with no heartbeat for more than 90 seconds starts recovery. Hidden views and late watchdog ticks receive a new grace window so throttling or host suspension does not trigger an immediate reload.
Recovery first assigns fresh HTML to the affected webview. If no heartbeat arrives within ten seconds, it recreates that host. Sidebar recovery checks that the scoped remove-view and focus commands exist before using them. Tab recovery creates a replacement panel and guards disposal by panel identity. Both paths retain the provider and its task stack, including an interrupted task.
Every attempt counts, including HTML-generation failures. Three attempts exhaust the budget. One startup heartbeat does not refill it: periodic heartbeats must span 60 seconds of sustained health. Exhaustion or failed/unavailable host recreation logs a warning and offers Reload Window or Show Logs. A window reload requires the user's action. A late action from an old warning is ignored after heartbeats return.
Recovery rechecks ownership, disposal, visibility and heartbeat revisions after asynchronous work. An obsolete operation cannot overwrite a replacement view. HTML generation uses the normal development/production selection. The development-server probe has a five-second timeout with a translated timeout message in all 18 locales; a timeout stays distinct from an unavailable server.
The Electron test harness shares isolated VS Code setup between visual and heartbeat scenarios. The heartbeat project uses production timers and a local mock provider. It covers stopped heartbeat delivery, real renderer-process termination with task preservation, and a sidebar hidden past the stale threshold.
Test Procedure
Run provider tests: pnpm --dir src exec vitest run core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts.
Run the webview heartbeat tests: pnpm --dir webview-ui exec vitest run src/__tests__/App.spec.tsx.
Run type checks: pnpm --dir src run check-types and pnpm --filter @roo-code/vscode-e2e check-types.
Build Electron fixtures: pnpm --filter @roo-code/vscode-e2e visual:build.
Run the smoke suite: xvfb-run -a pnpm --filter @roo-code/vscode-e2e exec playwright test -c playwright-electron.config.ts --project=heartbeat.
At pushed head 437abced0b, all three Electron smoke scenarios passed. Stopped heartbeats triggered document recovery. Terminating the isolated webview renderer restored the task UI, preserved the same task stack, and resumed periodic heartbeats. Hiding the sidebar past the stale threshold preserved its document. The hidden-sidebar scenario passed on a focused rerun after an overnight clock jump caused the first run's controller deadline to expire. This is not evidence for OS suspend/resume behavior.

The following changes are currently local and uncommitted, rather than part of 437abced0b:
Increase the crash-recovery poll from 150 to 210 seconds and correct its timing comment.
Assert that recovery ownership clears after sidebar, tab and failed recreation. Cover a second incident, the real ten-second replacement wait, disposal, delayed replacement, and slow HTML generation.
Retain sidebar recovery intent after the bounded wait expires, so a late replacement cannot refill the incident budget or evict an interrupted task. Capture that intent before asynchronous resolution.
Raise the Extension Host visual CI job timeout from 20 to 35 minutes for setup, builds, repeated visual scenes and the production heartbeat waits.
Update the heartbeat documentation without relying on an intermediate commit SHA.
Local follow-up validation: all 280 provider tests pass; extension and E2E type checks pass; targeted ESLint and formatting checks pass. Existing ESLint suppression counts did not increase. The extension and production webview build pass. The real renderer-crash Electron scenario also passes against the rebuilt local follow-up (2.8 minutes), including task-stack preservation and resumed periodic heartbeats.

Known limitations
Recreating the webview can lose unsent composer text, pending image attachments and scroll position. The extension-host task stack is retained.
Sidebar recreation uses generated VS Code commands. They are checked before use and exercised against the pinned VS Code version, but they are not a stable extension API contract.
A replacement that takes longer than ten seconds can show a failure warning before later heartbeats restore liveness. The local follow-up preserves its task and incident budget; it does not extend the production ten-second wait.
The heartbeat timestamp from the webview is not trusted for timing; the extension uses its own clock.
Electron tests do not reproduce OS minimize/sleep/resume scheduling. Those remain manual checks. Slow replacement beyond ten seconds is covered by provider tests, not by a deliberately delayed real VS Code replacement.
This PR mitigates renderer failure. It does not resolve the underlying memory growth tracked in #630 / #1542.

This call starts an interval for both panel types. The sidebar disposal path at Line 1145 only calls clearWebviewResources(). It does not clear webviewWatchdogInterval or remove the disposed this.view reference.

Description
A dead webview renderer leaves Zoo Code with a gray sidebar or tab while task execution continues in the extension host. This PR detects missing renderer heartbeats and repairs the affected interface without automatically reloading the VS Code window.
The webview sends a heartbeat on mount and every 30 seconds. The extension checks every 60 seconds. A visible view with no heartbeat for more than 90 seconds starts recovery. Hidden views and late watchdog ticks receive a new grace window so throttling or host suspension does not trigger an immediate reload.
Recovery first assigns fresh HTML to the affected webview. If no heartbeat arrives within ten seconds, it recreates that host. Sidebar recovery checks that the scoped remove-view and focus commands exist before using them. Tab recovery creates a replacement panel and guards disposal by panel identity. Both paths retain the provider and its task stack, including an interrupted task.
Every attempt counts, including HTML-generation failures. Three attempts exhaust the budget. One startup heartbeat does not refill it: periodic heartbeats must span 60 seconds of sustained health. Exhaustion or failed/unavailable host recreation logs a warning and offers Reload Window or Show Logs. A window reload requires the user's action. A late action from an old warning is ignored after heartbeats return.
Recovery rechecks ownership, disposal, visibility and heartbeat revisions after asynchronous work. An obsolete operation cannot overwrite a replacement view. HTML generation uses the normal development/production selection. The development-server probe has a five-second timeout with a translated timeout message in all 18 locales; a timeout stays distinct from an unavailable server.
The Electron test harness shares isolated VS Code setup between visual and heartbeat scenarios. The heartbeat project uses production timers and a local mock provider. It covers stopped heartbeat delivery, real renderer-process termination with task preservation, and a sidebar hidden past the stale threshold.

437abced0b, all three Electron smoke scenarios passed. Stopped heartbeats triggered document recovery. Terminating the isolated webview renderer restored the task UI, preserved the same task stack, and resumed periodic heartbeats. Hiding the sidebar past the stale threshold preserved its document. The hidden-sidebar scenario passed on a focused rerun after an overnight clock jump caused the first run's controller deadline to expire. The following changes are currently local and uncommitted, rather than part of
437abced0b:Local follow-up validation: all 280 provider tests pass; extension and E2E type checks pass; targeted ESLint and formatting checks pass. Existing ESLint suppression counts did not increase. The extension and production webview build pass. The real renderer-crash Electron scenario also passes against the rebuilt local follow-up (2.8 minutes), including task-stack preservation and resumed periodic heartbeats.
