fix(task): merge stale partial reasoning snapshot instead of duplicating - #1708
Reasoning text could render twice: say()'s partial-dedup only inspected clineMessages.at(-1), so when any other message (an ask, a tool result, api_req_started, …) was appended while a reasoning stream was in flight, the stranded partial: true snapshot was no longer the last message. The final partial: false write then took the append branch and persisted a second reasoning entry — the duplicate partial:true/partial:false pair from the issue (identical but for a few trailing chars). The webview renders every stored say:"reasoning" message as its own block, so two stored blocks = two rendered blocks; the storage layer is the right fix layer.
Minimal fix in say() (following the analysis the reporter posted on the issue): both append branches now scan clineMessages backwards for a stranded snapshot — same type/say, partial === true, and prefix-related text (new.startsWith(old) || old.startsWith(new)) — and merge in place, keeping the original ts:
partial: true delta → merges into the stranded snapshot (no forked second partial entry).
partial: false final write → replaces the stranded snapshot in place (partial: false, original ts, saveClineMessages() + updateClineMessage).
Safety properties: the scan only runs for say-calls that pass partial (reasoning stream, rate-limit/retry notices, completion_result), requires the triple match (same say type + partial === true + prefix relation), and returns early for non-string text — unrelated message types and completed messages can never match. Behavior when no snapshot is stranded is byte-identical to before.
Test Procedure
src/core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts (+4 specs, new describe "say() stale partial snapshot dedup"):
final write merges into a snapshot stranded by an api_req_started interleave → single block, partial: false, saveClineMessages called
partial delta merges into a snapshot stranded by a tool ask
non-prefix-related text still appends (no over-merge)
a completed (partial: false) same-type message is not treated as a snapshot
Red→green verified: the 2 merge specs fail on main (duplicate stored); the 2 guard specs pass on both.
cd src && ./node_modules/.bin/vitest run core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts → 154/154 passed.
cd src && pnpm run check-types → 0 errors.
ESLint on both changed files → clean (suppression counts unchanged).

Scope: My changes are focused on the linked issue (one major feature/fix per PR).
Self-Review: I have performed a thorough self-review of my code.

Visual Snapshot (UI changes only): N/A — no UI changes (the duplicate render is fixed at the storage layer).
Documentation Impact: No documentation updates are required.
say() only inspected clineMessages.at(-1) when deciding whether a
partial/complete write updates an in-flight partial or appends a new
message. When another message (ask/tool/api_req) was appended while a
reasoning stream was in flight, the final write took the append branch
and persisted a second reasoning entry next to the orphaned partial:true
snapshot, rendering the same reasoning twice in Code mode.
In both append branches of say(), scan clineMessages backwards for a
stranded partial snapshot of the same say type with prefix-related text
and merge into it in place (keeping the original ts) instead of
appending. ClosesZoo-Code-Org#1346.

Bug Fixes
Related partial message updates now appear as a single message instead of creating duplicates.
Message timing is preserved as partial content is updated.
Unrelated messages and already completed messages remain separate.
Finalized messages are handled correctly even when no text is available.
Tests
Added coverage for partial-message updates, message separation, timing, and save behavior.
Task.say now updates a matching stranded partial message instead of appending a duplicate. Matching partial and completed updates save the message and update the webview. Completed replacements preserve the snapshot timestamp. Tests cover matching and append cases.

Summary
Partial snapshot matching src/core/task/Task.ts
A helper finds the latest partial say snapshot with matching type and prefix-related string text. Partial updates reuse and save the snapshot, then update the webview; unmatched updates retain the append behavior.
Completed snapshot updates and regression coverage src/core/task/Task.ts, src/core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts
Completed updates replace a matching snapshot in place, preserve its timestamp, save the message, and update the webview. Tests cover matching and non-matching text, completed messages, differing say values, undefined completion text, and update ordering.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#2247: Both changes handle stranded partial say snapshots in Task; this PR addresses matching updates, while #2247 handles snapshots during task resume.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 31b03
Resolve the retry matching and failed-save behavior before merging. Reasoning can overwrite an earlier attempt or remain duplicated, and failed persistence can leave displayed text inconsistent with restored history. Per-chunk saves also add streaming overhead.

Explanation
The description is complete and directly related to issue #1346. It explains the cause, implementation, safety conditions, tests, validation results, and checklist status. The template requests a Discord username, but the author provided a GitHub handle instead; this is non-critical.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #1346 requires one stored reasoning entry after an interleaved message. Task.say now scans backward for a same-type, same-say, partial: true snapshot with prefix-related string text. It merges partial and final writes in place, preserves the original timestamp, saves before the webview update, and retains append behavior when no match exists. The added tests cover interleaving, guard cases, undefined final text, timestamp and lastMessageTs preservation, and save-before-update ordering.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The production change is limited to stale partial-message deduplication in Task.say. The eight added tests verify issue #1346 behavior and persistence ordering. No unrelated production feature or unrelated test change is identified.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Focused Task.say coverage is present for the changed behavior. Tests verify stale partial merging for final and partial writes, interleaving, timestamp and lastMessageTs preservation, persistence-before-update ordering for the partial merge, and append guards for unrelated text, completed messages, different say values, and undefined completion text (src/core/task/tests/Task.spec.ts:7712-7959). The changed code is core message-store logic in Task.ts, not a UI component, so no Playwright component snapshot is required.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path meets the security failure condition. In src/core/task/Task.ts:2764-2776, the new scan validates text and requires an existing say message with partial === true, matching type, and prefix-related text. The merge paths only mutate message fields, persist them, and update the webview (2818-2834, 2881-2903). They do not execute input, expose a new secret/PII sink, or alter approval and allowlist controls. The changed tests only exercise message deduplication.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
No changed lifecycle path can leak a resource or duplicate work after cancellation, disposal, or restart. findStalePartialSaySnapshotIndex only scans the in-memory message array. The changed say() branches mutate one existing message, await the existing saveClineMessages() path, and post one update through the existing updateClineMessage() path. They add no listeners, watchers, timers, providers, tasks, or abort handlers. The entry abort guard remains in place, and the added tests verify one merged message and save-before-update ordering.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The prior fire-and-forget persistence defect is addressed: both stale-merge branches now await saveClineMessages() before updateClineMessage (Task.ts:2824-2834 and 2887-2902). However, the changed branches ignore its boolean result. saveClineMessages() returns false when saveTaskMessages fails and documents that callers must skip UI updates in that case (Task.ts:1757-1781). If disk write fails during a stale partial or final merge, the code still updates the webview with the new in-memory state while ui_messages.json retains the old snapshot. A cancellation or restart can therefore lose the merged text or restore the partial state.
Resolution
Store the result of await this.saveClineMessages() in both stale-merge branches. When it returns false, log the persistence failure and skip updateClineMessage, following finalizePartialToolAsk. Add regression tests for save failure on both partial-delta and complete-final merges, asserting that the webview update is not sent and the failure is observable.

Persistence Integrity finding addressed at head bcd3879: the stranded-partial delta-merge branch in Task.say now awaits saveClineMessages() before the webview updateClineMessage post (mirroring the sibling complete-merge branches). Regression test pins the ordering with a deferred save — it fails if the awaited save is removed (157/157 Task tests; lifecycle model-check all six submodels pass).
Add a completed-write reject test for unrelated stranded text.
The new suite rejects unrelated text only for partial=true writes. The completed-write path (partial=false) has the same prefix guard, and no test checks that it rejects unrelated stranded text. A regression that drops the prefix check there would overwrite the stranded segment and still pass the suite.
As per path instructions, "Require regression coverage at the lowest valid harness with behavior-focused assertions, including relevant negative, error, false/unset, and boundary cases."

Clear the initial partial save before asserting completion persistence.
The assertion expect(saveSpy).toHaveBeenCalled() at src/core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts:7746 passes on the save from the initial partial append. The spy is not cleared before the completing say. Make the interleaved-ask test set lastMessageTs to the ask timestamp.
This test pushes a tool ask without calling ask(), so lastMessageTs already equals the reasoning timestamp before the merge. The retry then overwrites that row, and the current request gets no reasoning row. Restrict the search to messages from the current request.

Review comment at @src/core/task/Task.ts at line 2775:
Update findStalePartialSaySnapshotIndex to search only messages belonging to the
current request, so reasoning chunks from a retry cannot match and overwrite a
partial reasoning row from a failed attempt. Preserve the existing matching
conditions within the current request’s messages.

Match reformatted reasoning against its stored partial.
The reasoning formatter inserts \n\n before a **Title** heading, but only after the closing ** arrives. The stored partial keeps the earlier unformatted text, so findStalePartialSaySnapshotIndex fails its prefix check. A stranded partial reasoning row then remains, and a second reasoning row is appended. Compare the incoming text with the formatted form of the stored partial, so the stranded row is updated.

Update the prefix comparison in findStalePartialSaySnapshotIndex to compare
incoming text against the formatted form of the stored partial, so
formatter-inserted spacing before a completed heading still matches and updates
the existing reasoning row.

Avoid a full-history save for each stranded reasoning chunk.
Each later chunk merged into a stranded snapshot awaits saveClineMessages(). That call clones and writes the full message array and recomputes task metadata. Reasoning chunks await this say() call, so each chunk waits on full-history I/O. Coalesce these saves, and keep a durable write before the webview update.

In the stranded-snapshot merge path in Task.say, coalesce saves across later
reasoning chunks instead of awaiting a full saveClineMessages() for each chunk.
Ensure the coalesced save is durable before updating the webview.

Gate the stale-snapshot webview post on the save result.
Both new stale-snapshot merge branches await saveClineMessages() and discard its boolean result. They post messageUpdated either way. When the disk write fails, the webview shows the merged or completed row, but the disk record keeps the older partial state. A reload can then restore the stale text or a spinner. Skip the webview post when the save fails, as finalizePartialToolAsk does. The in-memory update stays, and the next chunk or save retries the write.
Suggested fix
staleSnapshot.progressStatus = progressStatus
// A stranded snapshot merge has no guaranteed later save, so
// persist the merged delta before the webview update — the
// same save-then-post pattern as the complete-merge branch.
- await this.saveClineMessages()- this.updateClineMessage(staleSnapshot).catch((error) => {- console.error("[Task#say] updateClineMessage failed:", error)- })+ if (await this.saveClineMessages()) {+ this.updateClineMessage(staleSnapshot).catch((error) => {+ console.error("[Task#say] updateClineMessage failed:", error)+ })+ }
staleSnapshot.progressStatus = progressStatus
// Instead of streaming partialMessage events, we do a save
// and post like normal to persist to disk.
- await this.saveClineMessages()-- this.updateClineMessage(staleSnapshot).catch((error) => {- console.error("[Task#say] updateClineMessage failed:", error)- })+ if (await this.saveClineMessages()) {+ this.updateClineMessage(staleSnapshot).catch((error) => {+ console.error("[Task#say] updateClineMessage failed:", error)+ })+ }

In both stale-snapshot merge branches in Task#say, gate the updateClineMessage
post on a successful saveClineMessages result. Keep the in-memory snapshot
update intact, and skip only the webview post when saving fails so a later save
can retry.

Closes: #1346
Description
Reasoning text could render twice:
say()'s partial-dedup only inspectedclineMessages.at(-1), so when any other message (anask, a tool result,api_req_started, …) was appended while a reasoning stream was in flight, the strandedpartial: truesnapshot was no longer the last message. The finalpartial: falsewrite then took the append branch and persisted a second reasoning entry — the duplicatepartial:true/partial:falsepair from the issue (identical but for a few trailing chars). The webview renders every storedsay:"reasoning"message as its own block, so two stored blocks = two rendered blocks; the storage layer is the right fix layer.Minimal fix in
say()(following the analysis the reporter posted on the issue): both append branches now scanclineMessagesbackwards for a stranded snapshot — same type/say,partial === true, and prefix-related text (new.startsWith(old) || old.startsWith(new)) — and merge in place, keeping the originalts:partial: truedelta → merges into the stranded snapshot (no forked second partial entry).partial: falsefinal write → replaces the stranded snapshot in place (partial: false, originalts,saveClineMessages()+updateClineMessage).Safety properties: the scan only runs for say-calls that pass
partial(reasoning stream, rate-limit/retry notices, completion_result), requires the triple match (same say type +partial === true+ prefix relation), and returns early for non-string text — unrelated message types and completed messages can never match. Behavior when no snapshot is stranded is byte-identical to before.Test Procedure
