Summary

Domain::get_by_domain() (the sunrise mapping lookup) only reads {base_prefix}wu_domain_mappings. Add-ons that keep mappings elsewhere had no way to route them; for example, Multinetwork stores secondary networks' mappings in {base_prefix}wu_{N}_domain_mappings.

This PR only adds a generic hook. Core does no extra work.

  • When the main table has no match and no query error, get_by_domain() applies wu_domain_mapping_fallback (null, $domains).
    • An add-on can return a raw mapping row (an object with the domain_mappings columns).
    • Anything else is ignored.
    • The result is cached like a main-table hit or miss.
  • Domain::MAPPING_FALLBACK_FILTER lets add-ons detect support.
  • No core queries are added. On installs with no filter registered, behaviour is unchanged, which addresses the CodeRabbit performance comment about running SHOW TABLES on every miss without a persistent cache. Table discovery, its caching and its invalidation move to the add-on that owns those tables (Ultimate-Multisite/ultimate-multisite-multinetwork#60, via its sunrise.php).
  • The hook runs at sunrise, before regular plugins load. Add-ons register it from an add-on sunrise.php, which Sunrise::load_addon_sunrise_files() already loads.

Verification

  • Domain_Test::test_get_by_domain_uses_fallback_filter_on_miss:
    • a filtered row routes to its blog
    • a miss passes the searched domains to the filter
    • a miss is still cached as notexists
  • vendor/bin/phpunit --filter 'test_get_by_domain_uses_fallback_filter_on_miss|Domain_Mapping_Test|Primary_Domain_Test|SSO_Test': OK (Tests: 417, Assertions: 713, Skipped: 1).
  • phpcs and phpstan: clean (pre-commit hook).
  • Rebased on main.

Resolves #1979

aidevops.sh v3.39.36 plugin for OpenCode

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added a fallback mechanism for domain lookups when no primary mapping is found.
    • Supports resolving domains through the wu_domain_mapping_fallback filter.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Valid fallback mappings are now returned correctly, while unresolved domains continue to return no result and remain cached appropriately.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for fallback resolution, unresolved domains, and the domains provided to the fallback filter.

📝 Walkthrough

Domain::get_by_domain() now applies wu_domain_mapping_fallback after an error-free primary lookup miss. It accepts only fallback objects with a non-empty domain. Tests cover matched and unresolved domains, filter input, and negative caching.

Changes: Domain mapping fallback

Layer / File(s) Summary
Apply and test fallback mapping
inc/models/class-domain.php, tests/WP_Ultimo/Models/Domain_Test.php
Domain exposes MAPPING_FALLBACK_FILTER. After a primary miss without a query error, get_by_domain() applies the filter and accepts valid mapped objects. Tests cover a matched domain, unresolved results, filter arguments, and notexists caching.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Feature · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to cac6d

Without a registered fallback filter, domain lookup behaves as before. A fallback callback that returns a row for a different domain could route a request to the wrong site, so validating the returned domain against the lookup is advisable before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to cac6d

The hook can influence site routing, redirect eligibility, and SSO target selection. Existing lookup precedence and routing checks remain intact, and registering a callback requires trusted PHP code. No introduced exploit was established, but the external add-on’s identity validation and cache invalidation could not be verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The affected authority is multisite domain identity, not merely one lookup response. Fallback-produced mappings can influence routing, redirect eligibility, and SSO target selection wherever the shared lookup is used. The domain_mappings cache group is global, so its isolation follows domain identity rather than a per-blog cache namespace.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — A remote request influences the searched host, but the inspected path does not let it install a callback or directly supply the returned row. The producer executes as installed PHP and already occupies a privileged sunrise boundary. Consequently, permissive row acceptance is a trusted-extension contract, not by itself evidence of a remotely exploitable boundary bypass.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The callback runs before new cache writes and has no local exception-recovery wrapper. Invalid returns become ordinary negatively cached misses; primary-query errors remain uncached. Failure containment and recovery for a throwing or temporarily unavailable external producer are therefore not defined by this hook.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make producer obligations explicit: return an authoritative requested-domain mapping with valid site ownership, and invalidate relevant positive and negative cache entries when mappings change, are revoked, or the producer is disabled. Verify those obligations in the add-on integration; they are not established failures in this PR.

Explanation

The changed production code adds a fallback hook to the domain lookup, and the changed test covers that hook and its negative-cache behavior. These changes are connected to the domain-routing objective in #1979. No unrelated change is established.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1979 requires Domain::get_by_domain() to search secondary-network mapping tables after a main-table miss and to reject stale rows unless the site belongs to the table's network. The diff adds only the wu_domain_mapping_fallback filter and Domain::MAPPING_FALLBACK_FILTER. Core adds no secondary-table discovery, UNION ALL query, wp_blogs ownership check, or wu_domain_mapping_network_tables support. The added test verifies a generic filter result and negative caching, but it does not verify secondary-network lookup or stale-row rejection. A separate add-on is not part of this pull request.

Resolution

Implement the #1979 secondary-network fallback in the reviewed code, including table discovery and caching, the network ownership check, and tests for a valid secondary mapping and a stale mapping after a site move. Alternatively, link or include the add-on implementation only if it is part of the reviewed change and the issue requirements are formally updated to accept the hook-based design.
