fix(react): place the suggestion menu below unless cramped, keep its side while filtering - #3190
Conversation
The scroll listener captures every scroll in the editor, including the menu's own. Each one recomputed the menu's position and re-rendered it, so a menu with little room could not be scrolled to its end. Only a scroll of an element that contains the trigger can move it. Part of #2771
…side while filtering The size middleware capped the menu to the room on its side, and autoPlacement then measured the capped menu: it fit where it was, so a menu near the bottom of the screen stayed squeezed below the trigger, and in WebKit it swung between the sides. A placement middleware now keeps the menu below unless there is less than 200px of room there and more above. It chooses the side when the menu opens and again only when the trigger moves, so the menu does not jump while the user filters the items. Both suggestion menu controllers use it. Closes #2771

independent of menu dimensions so filtering preserves placement.

With a lot of room, the menu took nearly the whole height of the screen. It now takes at most 400px; a longer list scrolls.
… at 600px The side now depends only on the trigger and the visible area (a fixed 200px menu), so nothing needs to be remembered: filtering cannot flip the menu, and reopening, scrolling or resizing re-choose the side. Uses platform.detectOverflow like autoPlacement does, and measures above only when the menu does not fit below. Raises the maximum height to 600px. Adds tests for asynchronously loaded items (#2363), page scroll, window resize, and the gap to the trigger while filtering (#2155).
…or through the API The dark slash menu and the slash menu page up/down screenshots show the menu capped at 600px. They are also about 11px narrower than the old images: that difference predates this change (the old images were captured in an environment that renders the menu wider; main renders it 339px wide too) and stayed within the screenshot tolerance until now. The placement tests place the cursor through the editor API: a window resized with page.viewport is scaled, so mouse coordinates miss. The async items test now asserts that the menu is still empty at its first check.
The menu was as wide as its widest item, so it shrank and grew while the user filtered the items. The middleware now keeps the floating element at the widest width the menu has had since it opened, and the menu fills the floating element (one shared CSS rule). The menu can still grow, e.g. when items load asynchronously; each opening starts at its own width.
…l event Adds tests that a menu opened again elsewhere chooses its side and height again, and starts at its own width. The page scroll tests wait for the expected state instead of a fixed second: WebKit delivers the scroll event about a second late.

The test at Line 184 already does this. For the "stays the same" checks, such as the filtering tests, a short delay is acceptable. Those checks assert that nothing changes. A retrying assertion would pass too early.

Don't really have any comments r.e. the code itself, but I do think that 70px is too small of a min height before the menu flips. I would rather have the menu flip more often but show more items, especially since there are quite a few items by default. What's the reasoning behind 70px?
There's no 70px in the code, that's just about the problem (i.e.: used 70px from the bottom to reproduce the issue) |
Closes #2771
Supersedes #2363. Builds on #3188 (merged).
Problem
Near the bottom of the screen, the suggestion menu stays below the trigger, squeezed to the room that is left (about 70px in our test). The last items cannot be reached, with the mouse or with the arrow keys.
Cause:
autoPlacementmeasures the menu itself. Thesizemiddleware caps the menu to the room on its side, so on the next update the capped menu fits where it is and does not move. The items also load asynchronously, so a menu that just opened is nearly empty and fits anywhere (#2363). In WebKit, the two middlewares also swing the menu between the sides, which resets its scroll position.Fix
A placement middleware replaces
autoPlacement:styles.css, for all UI libraries). The menu can still grow, for example when items load asynchronously. Each time the menu opens, it starts at its own width. Both suggestion menu controllers (slash menu and emoji picker) use the same middleware.
GenericPopoverand the menu wrappers do not change.Compared to #2232: the menu still has no minimum height, so a short menu above the trigger stays next to it (#2155). A menu with enough room below now stays below, also when there is more room above.
Compared to #2363: the same problem (no flip because the menu starts empty), without a context to call
update()after the items load. The fixed height in the decision also keeps the side stable while filtering, as suggested in that PR's discussion.Tests
suggestionMenuPlacement.test.tsx:Screenshots
The dark slash menu and the slash menu page up/down screenshots show the menu capped at 600px. They are also about 11px narrower than the old images. That difference is not from this PR: main renders the menu 339px wide too, also on the commit that captured the old images. The old images were captured in an environment that rendered the menu wider, and the difference stayed within the screenshot tolerance until now.
