fix(chatgpt): preserve account discovery and report fallback failures - #1178
ChatGPT model discovery failures currently disappear behind fallback suggestions, and /model list reads the global registry instead of models discovered for the account. Setup and the provider wizard also omit the matching account resolver.
The authenticated ChatGPT catalog now determines available model IDs. Onboarding resolves OAuth ownership before materializing the bearer; optional public metadata has its own one-second budget. The picker reports redacted failures for saved profiles and labels fallback suggestions unverified, with Ctrl+R retry. /model list refreshes the active provider through the same discovery path and reports only that profile's notices. Wrapped notice rows are shared with mouse hit testing so extra status text cannot shift model selection.
Results and errors stay associated with the profile, superseded refreshes are ignored, and selection retains the subscription route. OAuth error redaction includes both original and refreshed tokens, including control-split values.
Example failure notice:
subscription: fallback suggestions (unverified);
refresh failed: login expired; run zero auth
chatgpt. Ctrl+R to retry.
The defaults and compatibility version are in #1179, independently based on main. This PR retains other providers' existing catalog fallback behavior.
Verification
From this branch on macOS arm64, using Go 1.26.10 from go.mod:
make fmt-check
go vet ./...
go test -p 4 ./...
go test -race ./internal/providermodeldiscovery ./internal/tui -count=1
go run ./cmd/zero-release build
go run ./cmd/zero-release smoke
make vulncheck
git diff HEAD --check
make lint-static: four existing staticcheck findings outside this change (installtest, proxydial twice, tools/web_fetch), with no new findings
Full-suite validation uses a temporary home, removes inherited Zero/XDG overrides, and selects the encrypted file credential store. Native process/sandbox integration tests run with normal host process visibility. Regression tests use fake servers and temporary OAuth stores.
Regression evidence
With the relevant production files restored to current main, the new tests fail:
failed subscription discovery returned models=[gpt-stale] err=<nil>;
public metadata must not claim account availability
/model list lacks "gpt-future-coder" after live discovery
setup discovery did not use the bearer and account from the same OAuth login
slow metadata prevented live results: models=[] err=context deadline exceeded
Reverting the corresponding behavior also fails the retry, account-isolation, stale-response, and redaction regressions. Restoring picker-only retry wording in transcript notices fails both fallback and failure cases with transcript must offer a usable retry command instead of the picker shortcut. Two-profile regressions additionally cover inactive-account notices and the canonical chatgpt cache key; pointer tests cover wrapped notice rows. Before the fixes, those tests report:
active-profile transcript advertised an inactive profile's refresh:
active picker rows borrowed the canonical profile's models
click on rendered model selected tui.mouseSelectionTarget{Scope:"", Kind:0, Value:"", Index:0}, ok=false; want target
All pass with the fix.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
ChatGPT model discovery checks the signed-in account’s live catalog. Use /model or /model list to refresh availability, or press Ctrl+R in the picker to retry.
The model picker and model list distinguish live models from fallback suggestions and report discovery issues. Fallback suggestions are marked unverified; public model information does not confirm subscription access.
Bug Fixes
Improved discovery failure and refresh handling, including keeping results separate between accounts and protecting credentials in error messages.
Documentation
Updated the ChatGPT OAuth guide with model discovery and retry instructions.
Resolve onboarding and wizard OAuth ownership with the matching account identity, keep failed subscription lookups as errors, refresh provider-aware model listings, and report redacted failures with a small retry action. Scope cached results to their profile and ignore superseded refreshes.

Walkthrough
ChatGPT model discovery now checks the authenticated account’s live catalog before optional metadata enrichment. The TUI supports model-list refresh and picker retry, displays discovery status, and keeps results scoped to the account.

Summary
Authenticated live catalog discovery internal/providermodeldiscovery/*
ChatGPT discovery probes the authenticated live catalog first. Optional public metadata enrichment has a one-second timeout and does not block live results. Discovery errors are normalized and redacted. Tests cover failed probes, optional enrichment, and refreshed-token redaction.
Setup and provider-wizard discovery pass provider credentials and profile details. ChatGPT results are stored by endpoint when available. Tests cover account isolation and setup requests using the matching OAuth token and account ID.

/model list and Ctrl+R start discovery. Superseded results are ignored. The model list and picker display discovery status and fallback labels, and discovered models can be selected without changing the subscription provider route. Documentation describes refresh, retry, and fallback behavior.

Remove the picker-only "Ctrl+R" hint from /model list text output.
modelListText appends m.modelPickerDiscoveryNotices() to the hints. Those notices end with "Ctrl+R to retry" or "Ctrl+R to refresh". Ctrl+R only works while the model picker is open (keyCtrl(msg, 'r') is gated on m.picker.kind == pickerModel). The transcript text from /model list has no open picker. Users who follow the hint get no retry.
Pass a flag so the transcript variant says "run /model list to retry". The picker overlay keeps the Ctrl+R wording.
Call it with "Ctrl+R" from view.go and "/model list" from modelListText. Apply the same change to the ChatGPT "to refresh" notice.
