What

Feature request "Helper Tax Toggle" (Lucy Lovelock | Wren, 2026-10-21): helpers and staff playing an NPC or lore character shouldn't pay citizen tax on the denars players hand them.

The exemption follows the duty rank, so nobody has to remember a command:

  • An account holding simplefactions.taxexempt (new, default false) owes no citizen tax on any character while it is online.
  • On duty (yellow tag) → untaxed. Off duty (grey) or Commoner → taxed. It changes the moment the rank changes.
  • It covers every character of that account, including one it isn't playing right now (a shop sale, say).
  • The first time each character is found exempt in a server run is logged so staff can audit it:
    [TaxExempt] <account> owes no citizen tax as <character> (<id>): holds simplefactions.taxexempt; logged once per character until restart
    The check runs before the caller posts the money, so the line records the exemption, not a completed payment (CodeRabbit finding, see thread).

How

  • GuildTaxPolicy.tax works out the tax as before. When some would be withheld (cents > 0) and TaxExemptions.exempt(earner) holds, it returns none. Every citizen tax goes through this policy, so coin pickups, trades, Games winnings and material bank deposits are all covered. Zero-rate realms and every other path are unchanged. DenarEconomy needs no change: the pickup message is +10.00d with no tax part.
  • economy/TaxExemptions: an online check (Bukkit.getPlayer(owner).hasPermission) plus a once-per-character log set. No command, no saved state.

Rollout: LuckPerms (Main, not done here)

Only four groups hold *: staff and staff_inactive globally, helper+ globally, and helper only on dev, sandbox and tutorial. So the permission alone would exempt off-duty staff and miss on-duty plain helpers on Main. LuckPerms checks exact nodes before *, and a group's own node before an inherited one, so three lines fix it:

lp group staff permission set simplefactions.taxexempt true
lp group staff_inactive permission set simplefactions.taxexempt false
lp group helper permission set simplefactions.taxexempt true

helper+ is covered by its global *; helper_inactive, helper+_inactive and the _player groups hold nothing, so they stay taxed. Trade-off: while on duty, a staff member's own normal character is untaxed too; the [TaxExempt] log shows it.

Wiki: staff-only, nothing for the Gameplay Guide.

Review

  • CodeRabbit: one finding (log written before the posting); fixed by rewording, see thread. Its hourly review allowance was then used up.
  • Independent Opus review of the final code: VERDICT: APPROVE, two low doc findings fixed in 7014371.

Tests

  • TaxExemptionsTest (4) and an extended GuildTaxPolicyTest. JaCoCo shows 100% line/branch/instruction coverage for TaxExemptions and GuildTaxPolicy.
  • Windows local full run: the failing methods are the same 526 that fail on origin/main on Windows (directory fsync, PluginLifecycleCoverageTest, LockGuildTest, ...); Linux CI is authoritative.
  • Dev (TFMCDev01), the three nodes above set on the real groups with server=dev context only; bot TestChar1 as Mira Stonemere in Dsvrealm (citizen tax law temporarily low, restored afterwards), moved between groups with server=dev parents, 10/10:
    • Commoner: +9.50d (after 0.50d tax);
    • staff_inactive (has *): taxed (the false node wins);
    • staff: +10.00d, one [TaxExempt] line; a second pickup is untaxed and not logged again;
    • rerun 10/10 after the log rewording (75e916a);
    • back to staff_inactive: taxed;
    • helper_inactive taxed, helper untaxed, helper+_inactive taxed, helper+ untaxed.
    • Dev log: no SimpleFactions or DenarEconomy errors.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

/taxexempt [on|off|list] (alias /taxtoggle) sets the character the
player is playing exempt from citizen tax, for NPC and lore characters
that are handed denars in roleplay. The check sits in GuildTaxPolicy,
so coin pickups, trades, Games winnings and material deposits all skip
the tax. The exemption only applies while the owner is online and holds
simplefactions.taxexempt, so losing the permission taxes the character
again without clearing the setting. The account's other characters stay
taxed. Exempt characters are saved in Cache/tax-exempt-characters.json;
an unreadable file exempts nobody and is never overwritten. Every
toggle is logged as [TaxExempt].

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a permission that exempts eligible account holders from citizen tax across their characters. The account holder must be online for the exemption to apply.
    • The exemption permission is disabled by default.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Tax exemptions now apply only when tax would otherwise be due; zero-rate tax calculations remain unchanged.

Tax policy now exempts positive tax amounts for earners whose owners have the configured permission. The exemption check tracks the first exempt earning per character and logs it when a plugin instance exists.

GuildTaxPolicy skips positive tax for exempt earners. TaxExemptions checks the owner’s online status and permission, and logs the first exempt earning per character when a plugin instance exists. The plugin descriptor defines the permission, and tests cover the exemption and logging behaviour.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review d16db

The exemption change is mergeable with awareness that a failed deposit can produce a misleading untaxed-earning log and suppress the later successful earning's log.

Holding simplefactions.taxexempt (default false) now means no citizen
tax on any character while the account is online, so on-duty helpers
and staff never have to remember a toggle. /taxexempt, its saved file
and its tests are gone. The policy asks only when tax would be
withheld, and the first untaxed earning of each character in a run is
logged as [TaxExempt] for staff to audit.

The policy runs before each caller posts the money (pickup preview, trades,
Games, material deposits), so a failed posting could leave a line saying it
was earned untaxed. The line now records that the character was found exempt.
