fix: stack eggs and other aging food in hoppers - #125
Player report: eggs don't stack automatically in a hopper. On Main, tracked chickens lay Cooking eggs (husbandry.ymlegg: food(type=egg;...)), and each one is stamped with the time it was laid (cooking:last_update). Hoppers, and the chests they feed, only stack exact copies, so every egg took its own slot. A hopper filled after 5 eggs, and a chest filled one slot per egg. Player pickup, chest opening and bundles already stack aging food; hoppers had no handling.
What
New HopperFoodStacker listener:
InventoryMoveItemEvent (only when a hopper or hopper minecart starts the move) and InventoryPickupItemEvent, into chests, barrels, hoppers, shulker boxes, droppers and dispensers.
It walks the destination in vanilla's slot order. If the slot vanilla would fill first is empty or holds an exact copy with room, nothing changes. If it holds an equal food that only aged apart (InventoryAdder.equalsFood + sameApartFromAging, the same rules as player pickup), has room for all of the incoming item, and no later slot holds an exact copy with room, the fresher side takes the older one's data and vanilla stacks them in that slot. Different stars stay apart, as elsewhere. Food never gets fresher.
Cancellation-safe: a fresher moved item takes the stored data through event.setItem at HIGHEST, which a cancelled move throws away. The stored stack (older moved item) and the ground item (pickup) are only changed at MONITOR with ignoreCancelled, which runs only for events nothing cancelled, right before vanilla adds the item. Nothing is left pending across ticks.
Droppers are skipped: CraftBukkit's dropper keeps the source item when the event item changes. Paper 1.21.10's hopper code (build 130, on Main and Dev) takes the item out of the source before the event and adds the event's item afterwards, so a changed copy of the same amount can't duplicate.
Performance
RPCharacters, CoreProtect, Thievery and MusicalInstruments already listen to InventoryMoveItemEvent on Main, so Paper already fires it; this only adds our handler.
Non-food traffic: an inventory-type switch, then hasItemMeta() and a read-only PDC lookup of cooking:food_id (no ItemMeta copy).
Food: the slot walk stops at the first slot vanilla would use. A FoodItem is parsed only for same-material slots with room that aren't exact copies, and ages are compared only when a merge is needed.
Main runs hopper-transfer/hopper-check 24 and hopper-amount 1.
Tests
HopperFoodStackerTest (20 tests): fresher/older/equal age, cancelled move, HIGHEST/MONITOR contract, item that would not all fit, later exact copy, earlier empty slot and exact copy left to vanilla, full stacks, other items and other stars skipped, renamed food skipped, full chest, non-food, pull into a hopper, droppers and furnaces ignored, ground pickup both ways.
CookingLifecycleTest checks that Cooking registers the listener for both events.
Local mvn verify: 1534 tests, all pass except 4 shipped-config/asset tests (PanFoodsCoverageTest, RiceCookingTest$ShippedConfig, SauceThickeningTest, OctopusJellyfishAssetsTest). They fail the same way on a clean main checkout on Windows; Linux CI decides.
Dev (TFMCDev01) bot test with a real Cooking egg from cooking builditem, copied with 5 laid times one minute apart. The bot placed the hoppers and chests, since Thievery only lets a hopper move items between containers its own character placed.
Aging food carries its own clock, so hoppers, which only stack exact
copies, gave every egg its own slot. When a hopper moves food into a
storage block or picks it up off the ground, and the slot vanilla would
fill first holds an equal food that only aged apart, both now take the
more aged copy's data so vanilla stacks them. Food never gets fresher,
droppers and containers with slot rules are left alone, and non-food
hopper traffic only costs a food-id lookup.

Hoppers can stack food items that are otherwise identical but differ in age, when moving items between supported inventories or picking them up from the ground. The resulting stack retains the data from the more-aged item. Supported inventories include chests, barrels, hoppers, shulker boxes, dispensers and droppers; other items and cases that do not meet the merge conditions continue to use vanilla handling.
The pull request adds a listener for hopper inventory moves and item pickups. It compares food stacks in supported inventories and can apply the older food item's data after a merge. The plugin registers the listener and adds tests for merge selection, event handling, and registration.
The merge logic scans destination slots and selects a different-age stack only when the full incoming stack fits. Tests cover merge eligibility, slot selection, and capacity limits.

Move and pickup handlers process supported inventories and defer age updates when required. Cooking registers the listener. Tests cover event outcomes, fallback cases, and listener registration.

Do not change the ground item before the pickup outcome is final.
onPickup calls entity.setItemStack(stackable) at HIGHEST. Other plugins can still cancel InventoryPickupItemEvent after this listener runs. A cancelled pickup then leaves the ground item with the rewritten stack. The item keeps the older food data even though it was not moved.
Changing the priority to MONITOR does not fix this. MONITOR is for observing the outcome of an event, and the event must not be modified there. Other MONITOR listeners can also still cancel the event.
Bukkit does not provide a priority that allows a modification after all cancellations are known. A cancellation-safe fix therefore needs a separate design. Decide how the ground item is handled when the pickup is cancelled before the stack is rewritten.

Update onPickup’s use of stackable so it does not rewrite the ground item while
InventoryPickupItemEvent can still be cancelled. Use a separate design that
establishes the final pickup outcome before changing the item, preserving its
original stack whenever pickup is cancelled; do not move the mutation to
MONITOR.
Cover the production listener registration with a test.
Cover the production listener registration with a test.
The tests call onMove and onPickup on a new HopperFoodStacker instance. They never dispatch an event through the plugin manager. The only registration is in Cooking.registerListeners(). Removing getServer().getPluginManager().registerEvents(new HopperFoodStacker(), this); leaves all 16 tests passing, and hopper stacking can stop working in game without a test failure. Registering a listener in setUp does not cover this. That listener is created by the test, not by Cooking.
Add a test that loads the plugin with MockBukkit.load(Cooking.class), as CookingLifecycleTest does. Dispatch an InventoryMoveItemEvent through the plugin manager. Assert the stored data of the moved egg. If the registration is removed, this test fails.

Direct unit calls to HopperFoodStacker.onMove do not verify production listener
registration. Add a lifecycle test following CookingLifecycleTest that loads
Cooking through MockBukkit, dispatches an InventoryMoveItemEvent through the
plugin manager, and asserts the moved egg’s stored data reflects stacking;
ensure the test relies on Cooking.registerListeners() rather than registering a
test-created listener.
Only change what a cancelled event leaves untouched: the moved item
(discarded on cancel) or the ground item (restored on the next tick if
it is still there). The incoming food takes the stored stack's data;
when it was the older one, the stack takes its data on the next tick
once the slot has really grown. Merges need room for the whole item,
so nothing spills into later slots with younger data. The lifecycle
test now checks that Cooking registers the listener.

Destination rewrite before cancellation: see the inline reply. Nothing in the destination changes while the event can still be cancelled.
Ground item rewritten before the pickup is final: the ground item still takes the stored data (vanilla copies it after the event), and on the next tick an item still on the ground gets its own data back (aCancelledPickupGetsItsOwnDataBack). A merge only happens when the whole item fits, so an item still on the ground means the pickup did not happen. When the ground item was the older one, the stack takes its data once the item is gone.
Registration coverage:CookingLifecycleTest now checks that the plugin registers a HopperFoodStacker for both InventoryMoveItemEvent and InventoryPickupItemEvent. With the registration line removed, the test fails. The lifecycle test mock-constructs the loaders, so it checks the registration instead of dispatching an egg; the stacking itself is covered by HopperFoodStackerTest (20 tests) and the Dev run.

Drop the next-tick work. A fresher moved item takes the stored data
through the event at HIGHEST, which a cancelled move throws away. The
stored stack (older moved item) and the ground item (pickup) are only
changed at MONITOR, which runs for events nothing cancelled, right
before vanilla adds the item. A later exact copy with room is left to
vanilla, as it fills that slot.

Addressed the second review in bfac0cf. Five findings came from the next-tick design: disable flush, ground item visible in the same tick, restore amount, extraction before aging, and growth from another insertion. That design is gone. Changes outside the event happen only at MONITOR (ignoreCancelled), right before vanilla inserts. The later exact copy is now left to vanilla. The source-quantity concern is answered inline with the Paper 1.21.10 hopper code and the Dev results. 20 unit tests pass, including one that pins the HIGHEST/MONITOR + ignoreCancelled contract. The Dev rerun on bfac0cf passes 18/18.
