Summary

  • Add a top-level Windows 11 File Explorer command for files, folders, and folder background, implemented as IExplorerCommand in the native DLL.
  • Desktop installs register a sparse MSIX package (QL-Win.QuickLook.Shell) from an external location, signed with a local code-signing certificate. ContextMenu=false removes it, and /register-context-menu registers before the main instance starts.
  • Treat only the Store package identity (21090PaddyXu.QuickLook_) as UWP, so the shell sparse package does not change desktop process behavior.

Test plan

  • On Windows 11 x64 or ARM64, launch the desktop build and confirm a QuickLook verb appears for a file, a folder, and empty folder background.
  • Invoke the verb and confirm QuickLook previews the selected path.
  • Set ContextMenu to false, restart, and confirm the verb is removed.
  • Confirm the Store package does not attempt sparse-package registration.
  • Confirm an architecture mismatch skips registration and writes a log.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added a QuickLook command to the Windows 11 File Explorer context menu for files, folders, and folder backgrounds. Selecting it opens the relevant item in QuickLook.
    • Context-menu registration is handled automatically during normal startup, with a dedicated registration option available for setup or repair.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved detection of QuickLook package environments to avoid misidentifying unrelated packaged apps.

…m the shell.

Walkthrough

The change adds a Windows 11 File Explorer context-menu command backed by a native COM server. QuickLook now builds, signs, and deploys an MSIX package for the command, and startup performs registration and checks package identity when determining UWP status.

Changes: Windows Explorer context-menu registration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Explorer command implementation
QuickLook.Native/QuickLook.Native32/ContextMenuGuid.h, QuickLook.Native/QuickLook.Native32/ExplorerCommand.h, QuickLook.Native/QuickLook.Native32/ExplorerCommand.cpp
Adds the COM command and class factory. The command resolves a selected filesystem path or current folder, selects a localized title, and launches the adjacent QuickLook.exe.
Native COM server and build wiring
QuickLook.Native/QuickLook.Native32/ContextMenuExports.cpp, QuickLook.Native/QuickLook.Native32/dllmain.cpp, QuickLook.Native/QuickLook.Native32/SignPackage.cpp, QuickLook.Native/QuickLook.Native32/QuickLook.ContextMenu.def, QuickLook.Native/QuickLook.Native32/resource.h, QuickLook.Native/QuickLook.Native32/QuickLook.Native32.vcxproj, QuickLook.Native/QuickLook.Native64/QuickLook.Native64.vcxproj, QuickLook.Native/QuickLook.NativeArm64/QuickLook.NativeArm64.vcxproj
Adds COM server exports, module state, and the native package-signing entry point. The x86, x64, and ARM64 projects compile the command and signing sources and use the module definition file.
MSIX creation and registration
QuickLook/Helpers/ContextMenuRegistration.cs, Build/AppxManifest.xml
Adds architecture and install-identity checks, manifest and asset generation, certificate handling, native DLL signing, package deployment and removal, and registration markers. The manifest registers the COM surrogate and Explorer verbs for files, directories, and directory backgrounds.
Startup and UWP checks
QuickLook/App.xaml.cs, QuickLook.Common/Helpers/ProcessHelper.cs, QuickLook.Native/QuickLook.Native32/HelperMethods.cpp
Adds normal startup registration and a /register-context-menu path that stops startup after the registration attempt. The managed and native UWP checks now require a matching QuickLook package-name prefix.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to ea592

The new Explorer context menu installs a self-signed certificate as a machine-wide trusted root and can show unexplained admin prompts at startup. Store-package detection in the native helper is broken, and registration can fail on ARM64 systems when the process architecture differs from the OS architecture. Fix these before merging.

Escape trailing backslashes in target before the closing quote.

The command line becomes "…\QuickLook.exe" "C:\" when target is a drive root. This happens when the user right-clicks the background of a drive root, or selects a drive. CommandLineToArgvW and the .NET startup parser read \" as an escaped quote. QuickLook receives C:" instead of C:\. In App.OnStartup, Directory.Exists/File.Exists then return false, or GetFullPath throws and the exception is caught. The command does nothing for drive roots. The " check on Line 139 does not catch this case.

Double every backslash run that ends target before the closing quote.

Fix the prefix length: _wcsnicmp compares 24 characters, but the prefix has 23.

L"21090PaddyXu.QuickLook_" has 23 characters. A count of 24 also compares the literal's null terminator with name[23]. A package full name has the form 21090PaddyXu.QuickLook_<version>_..., so name[23] is the first character of the version. That character is never \0, so the comparison always fails.

As a result, HelperMethods::IsUWP() returns false for the Store package. WoW64HookHelper::Launch and DialogHook::GetSelected then run their non-UWP code inside the Store app. The managed check in ProcessHelper.IsRunningAsUWP is correct, so the native result and the managed result now disagree.

Use a process-matching DLL for signing.

When QuickLook runs as x64 on an ARM64 system, NativeDllName() selects the ARM64 DLL for the package surrogate, but Sign loads that same DLL inside the x64 process. LoadLibrary can then fail with ERROR_BAD_EXE_FORMAT.

Keep the OS-based DLL for the package manifest. Select a separate DLL based on RuntimeInformation.ProcessArchitecture for Sign.

Do not show a UAC prompt from the background startup path.

EnsureRegistered runs RegisterCore(false) on every normal startup, including /autorun at logon. If the certificate is not trusted for the machine, EnsureMachineTrust starts an elevated powershell.exe with Verb = "runas". The user then sees an unexplained UAC prompt for PowerShell with -ExecutionPolicy Bypass, with no QuickLook UI around it.

If the user cancels, Process.Start throws. Line 151 then writes a failure marker for one day. The user gets the same prompt again on the next day's startup, and this repeats until the user accepts.

Do machine-level trust only in the explicit /register-context-menu path, from the installer or a user action. In the background path, skip registration when trust is missing.

Escape cerPath before you put it in the PowerShell single-quoted string.

cerPath comes from SettingHelper.LocalDataPath. That path normally contains the user profile directory. If the user name contains an apostrophe (for example C:\Users\O'Brien\...), the elevated script has a syntax error. Import-Certificate then never runs, the exit code is non-zero, and registration fails for that user on every attempt.

In PowerShell, a single quote inside a single-quoted string must be doubled. Use cerPath.Replace("'", "''"). You can also pass the script with -EncodedCommand so that no quoting is needed.

Do not install the per-user code-signing certificate into LocalMachine\Root.

GetOrCreateCertificate creates a self-signed certificate. The certificate has the code-signing EKU (1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.3). Its private key is in CurrentUser\My and is usable by any process that runs as that user. EnsureMachineTrust then adds this certificate to LocalMachine\Root. After that, all users on the machine trust Authenticode signatures from this key.

Consequence: any malware that runs as a non-admin user can sign arbitrary binaries and MSIX packages that the whole machine trusts. Each user who runs QuickLook adds one more root. Nothing removes these roots when QuickLook is uninstalled or when ContextMenu=false is set, because RemovePackage does not remove certificates.

Sparse-package deployment needs the signer to be trusted for package validation. LocalMachine\TrustedPeople holds the self-signed leaf without making it a chain root for Authenticode. Remove the Root import. Check TrustedPeople in IsInStore and in the post-import check. Remove the certificate when the package is unregistered. If deployment still returns 0x800B0109 with only TrustedPeople, consider a signed package from the release pipeline. A machine-wide root generated per user is not a safe fallback.

Review comment at @QuickLook/Helpers/ContextMenuRegistration.cs at line 503:
Update EnsureMachineTrust to import the certificate only into
LocalMachine\TrustedPeople, and use that store in its IsInStore checks and
post-import validation; remove any LocalMachine\Root additions. Remove the
certificate when the package is unregistered, using the existing package-removal
flow.

Adds a Windows 11 top-level Explorer command that opens files, folders, and folder backgrounds in QuickLook, with sparse-package registration for desktop installs.

Changes:
