PR Checklist

  • Functionality has been tested, no obvious bugs

Brief Description of Changes

PDFViewer: Prepare() parsed the whole document on the UI thread just to size the window, then View() read and parsed it again there. A 1.5 GB PDF blocked QuickLook for 7 s, during which switching to another file was impossible. The document is now loaded once on a background task. Prepare() waits up to 200 ms for it, so typical files still get their exact page size, and otherwise starts with an A4 page. The in-memory copy is done in chunks and cancelled from Cleanup(), so moving to another file stops reading at once. Load errors still fall back to another viewer once the document is ready by View(). LoadPdf(path) now also closes its file stream.

CsvViewer: CharsetDetector.DetectFromFile() read the whole file on the UI thread although only the first 10000 rows are shown: 380 ms for a 119 MB CSV with a warm cache. The encoding is now detected from a 1 MB sample.

Related Issue (if any)

None.

Additional Notes

Builds cleanly against current master (MSBuild, Release, both plugins). No automated tests.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • PDF loading now runs in the background, helping the viewer remain responsive while documents are prepared.
    • PDF viewer sizing better accommodates the dimensions and page count of a document.
  • Bug Fixes
    • CSV files are more reliably displayed when their character encoding differs from the system default.
    • PDF loading now handles cancellation and cleanup more reliably, including when a viewer is replaced during loading.

PDFViewer: Prepare() parsed the whole document on the UI thread just to
size the window, then View() read and parsed it again there. A 1.5 GB PDF
blocked QuickLook for 7 s, during which switching to another file was
impossible.

The document is now loaded once on a background task. Prepare() waits up
to 200 ms for it, so typical files still get their exact page size, and
otherwise starts with an A4 page. The in-memory copy is done in chunks and
cancelled from Cleanup(), so moving to another file stops reading at once.
Load errors keep falling back to another viewer when the document is ready
by View(). LoadPdf(path) now also closes its file stream.

CsvViewer: CharsetDetector.DetectFromFile() read the whole file on the UI
thread, although only the first 10000 rows are shown: 380 ms for a 119 MB
CSV with a warm cache, delaying any switch to the next file. Detect the
encoding from a 1 MB sample instead.

Walkthrough

The CSV viewer samples up to 1 MiB to detect encoding. The PDF viewer now loads documents in a cancellable background task, calculates control size from multiple pages, and handles loading, password prompts, errors, and cleanup.

Changes: CSV Encoding Detection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Sample-based encoding detection
QuickLook.Plugin/QuickLook.Plugin.CsvViewer/CsvViewerPanel.xaml.cs
The viewer detects encoding from up to 1 MiB of a shared-read stream, resets the stream for parsing, and retains the Encoding.Default fallback.

PDF Loading and Display

Layer / File(s) Summary
Document loading and control sizing
QuickLook.Plugin/QuickLook.Plugin.PDFViewer/PdfDocumentWrapper.cs, QuickLook.Plugin/QuickLook.Plugin.PDFViewer/PdfViewerControl.xaml.cs
The wrapper copies input streams in 1 MiB chunks and checks for cancellation. The control calculates size from up to five pages and loads a wrapper from a scoped file stream.
Background loading and viewer lifecycle
QuickLook.Plugin/QuickLook.Plugin.PDFViewer/Plugin.cs
Prepare starts background loading and waits up to 200 ms for preferred sizing. View handles completed or pending loads, password prompts, errors, and busy state. Cleanup cancels loading and disposes an unadopted document.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 43279

Some CSV values can display incorrectly, and a delayed PDF load failure leaves an error view instead of trying the default viewer. Fix those paths before merging.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 43279

Background loading improves responsiveness, but switching files does not stop PDF parsing once it has begun. Repeatedly previewing slow documents can leave earlier loads holding memory while new loads start, potentially affecting the whole application. Cleanup prevents stale display and eventually releases completed documents, but does not bound outstanding parsing work.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Cancelled previews can retain whole-document buffers while parsing continues. Prepare starts a new task for each preview, but cancellation is checked only before the non-cancellable PdfDocument.Load call, and Cleanup returns without waiting for it. Repeated switching among slow-to-parse documents can therefore accumulate outstanding loads and weaken application-level resource containment. Eventual disposal prevents permanent retention after completion, but does not bound resources while parsing remains pending. This overlap is introduced by the asynchronous lifecycle; practical exhaustion has not been demonstrated.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported exposure is application-level availability: attacker-supplied documents must be selected for preview, and outstanding loads retain resources in the QuickLook process. The inspected path does not establish cross-service access, tenant exposure or additional privileges.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A resource-amplification path exists if a document remains inside PDF parsing when the user switches previews: cancellation cannot interrupt that call, its full memory copy remains live, and another load can start. Repetition could exhaust application resources. This is an inferred concern introduced by overlapping lifetimes, not a verified denial-of-service exploit.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Selected file bytes still flow through a read-only file stream into an in-memory PDF and the existing parser. Cancellation checks and control identity checks constrain copying and display adoption respectively; neither terminates parsing already in progress.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Successful superseded results have an explicit disposal owner, and failed construction releases the copied stream. These controls limit retention after termination, but disposal of an unadopted successful result waits for task completion.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Use an application-wide bound on outstanding PDF loads and retained document bytes, with replacement requests coalesced while non-cancellable parsing drains. If abandoned parsing must terminate promptly, consider a separately terminable worker rather than treating cancellation of copying as cancellation of parsing.

Explanation

The title names two of the changes in the PR: moving PDF loading off the UI thread, and detecting CSV encoding from a sample. Both appear in the raw summary and the PR objectives. The title is a bit long and joins two changes, but it matches the actual changeset and is not misleading or vague.

Dispose the file stream if detection fails.

If DetectFromStream or the position reset throws, execution never reaches the StreamReader declaration. The file stream then remains open until finalization. Declare the stream with using at creation so the exception path closes it; StreamReader disposes its supplied stream only after the reader exists. (learn.microsoft.com)

# UTF Unknown

Detect character set for files, streams and other bytes.

Detection of character sets with a simple and redesigned interface.

This package is based on Ude and since version 2 also on uchardet, which are ports of the Mozilla Universal Charset Detector.

The interface and other classes has been resigned so it&#39;s easier to use and better object oriented design (OOD). Unit tests and CI has been added.

Features:

  * New API
  * Moved to .NET Standard
  * Added more unit tests
  * Builds on CI (GitHub Actions)
  * Strong named
  * Documentation added
  * Multiple bugs from Ude fixed

## Supported Platforms

  * .NET 6 (Will be dropped in the future)
  * .NET 8
  * .NET Standard 2.0

Remarks: You can still register your `EncodingProvider` so that the `Encoding.GetEncoding(...)` method first tries to find in it.

## Usage

Use the static detectX methods from `CharsetDetector`.

### Synchronous Methods

    // Detect from File
    DetectionResult result = CharsetDetector.DetectFromFile(&quot;path/to/file.txt&quot;); // or pass FileInfo

    // Detect from Stream
    result = CharsetDetector.DetectFromStream(stream);

    // Detect from bytes
    results = CharsetDetector.DetectFromBytes(byteArray);

    // Get the best Detection
    DetectionDetail resultDetected = results.Detected;

    // Get the alias of the found encoding
    string encodingName = resultDetected.EncodingName;

    // Get the System.Text.Encoding of the found encoding (can be null if not available)
    Encoding encoding = resultDetected.Encoding;

    // Get the confidence of the found encoding (between 0 and 1)
    float confidence = resultDetected.Confidence;

    // Get all the details of the result
    IList&lt;DetectionDetail&gt; allDetails = result.Details;

### Asynchronous Methods

    // Detect from File asynchronously
    DetectionResult result = await CharsetDetector.DetectFromFileAsync(&quot;path/to/file.txt&quot;, cancellationToken); // or pass FileInfo

    // Detect from Stream asynchronously
    result = await CharsetDetector.DetectFromStreamAsync(stream, cancellationToken);

# Docs

The article &quot;A composite approach to language/encoding detection&quot; describes the charsets detection algorithms implemented by the library.

## The following charsets are supported

Encodings with BOM: `utf-7`, `utf-8`, `utf-16be`/`utf-16le`, `utf-32be`/`utf-32le`, `X-ISO-10646-UCS-4-34121`/`X-ISO-10646-UCS-4-21431`, `gb18030`.

Encodings without BOM are presented in the table, separated by languages:

# UTF Unknown

Detect character set for files, streams and other bytes.

Detection of character sets with a simple and redesigned interface.

This package is based on Ude and since version 2 also on uchardet, which are ports of the Mozilla Universal Charset Detector.

The interface and other classes has been resigned so it&#39;s easier to use and better object oriented design (OOD). Unit tests and CI has been added.

Features:

  * New API
  * Moved to .NET Standard
  * Added more unit tests
  * Builds on CI (GitHub Actions)
  * Strong named
  * Documentation added
  * Multiple bugs from Ude fixed

  * `cp949`: use `ks_c_5601-1987`
  * `iso-2022-cn`: use `x-cp50227`

Features:

  * New API
  * Moved to .NET Standard
  * Added more unit tests
  * Builds on CI (GitHub Actions)
  * Strong named
  * Documentation added
  * Multiple bugs from Ude fixed

## Supported Platforms

  * .NET 6 (Will be dropped in the future)
  * .NET 8
  * .NET Standard 2.0

Remarks: You can still register your `EncodingProvider` so that the `Encoding.GetEncoding(...)` method first tries to find in it.

## Usage

Use the static detectX methods from `CharsetDetector`.

### Synchronous Methods

    // Detect from File
    DetectionResult result = CharsetDetector.DetectFromFile(&quot;path/to/file.txt&quot;); // or pass FileInfo

    // Detect from Stream
    result = CharsetDetector.DetectFromStream(stream);

    // Detect from bytes
    results = CharsetDetector.DetectFromBytes(byteArray);

    // Get the best Detection
    DetectionDetail resultDetected = results.Detected;

    // Get the alias of the found encoding
    string encodingName = resultDetected.EncodingName;

    // Get the System.Text.Encoding of the found encoding (can be null if not available)
    Encoding encoding = resultDetected.Encoding;

    // Get the confidence of the found encoding (between 0 and 1)
    float confidence = resultDetected.Confidence;

    // Get all the details of the result
    IList&lt;DetectionDetail&gt; allDetails = result.Details;

### Asynchronous Methods

    // Detect from File asynchronously
    DetectionResult result = await CharsetDetector.DetectFromFileAsync(&quot;path/to/file.txt&quot;, cancellationToken); // or pass FileInfo

    // Detect from Stream asynchronously
    result = await CharsetDetector.DetectFromStreamAsync(stream, cancellationToken);

<title>Encoding.ASCII Property (System.Text) | Microsoft Learn</title>
<location>https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/api/system.text.encoding.ascii?view=net-5.0</location>
<excerpt>citeturn0search0 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: last week; static property System::Text::Encoding ^ ASCII { System::Text::Encoding ^ get(); };` ... NET Framework 2.0, non-ASCII code points fall back during decoding. ... It uses replacement fallback to replace each string that it cannot encode and each byte that it cannot decode with a question mark (&quot;?&quot;) ... Instead, you can call the GetEncoding(String, EncoderFallback, DecoderFallback) method to instantiate an ASCIIEncoding object whose fallback is either an EncoderFallbackException or a DecoderFallbackException, as the following example illustrates.
## Remarks

ASCII characters are limited to the lowest 128 Unicode characters, from U+0000 to U+007F.

When selecting the ASCII encoding for your app, consider the following:

  * The ASCII encoding is usually appropriate for protocols that require ASCII.

  * If you require 8-bit encoding (which is sometimes incorrectly referred to as &quot;ASCII&quot;), the UTF-8 encoding is recommended over the ASCII encoding. For the characters 0-7F, the results are identical, but use of UTF-8 avoids data loss by allowing representation of all Unicode characters that are representable. Note that the ASCII encoding has an 8th bit ambiguity that can allow malicious use, but the UTF-8 encoding removes ambiguity about the 8th bit.

  * Prior to .NET Framework version 2.0, .NET Framework allowed spoofing by ignoring the 8th bit. Beginning with .NET Framework 2.0, non-ASCII code points fall back during decoding.

The ASCIIEncoding object that is returned by this property might not have the appropriate behavior for your app. It uses replacement fallback to replace each string that it cannot encode and each byte that it cannot decode with a question mark (&quot;?&quot;) </excerpt>

### Replacement Fallback

When a character does not have an exact match in the target scheme, but there is no appropriate character that it can be mapped to, the application can specify a replacement character or string. This is the default behavior for the Unicode decoder, which replaces any two-byte sequence that it cannot decode with REPLACEMENT_CHARACTER (U+FFFD). It is also the default behavior of the ASCIIEncoding class, which replaces each character that it cannot encode or decode with a question mark. The following example illustrates character replacement for the Unicode string from the previous example. As the output shows, each character that cannot be decoded into an ASCII byte value is replaced by 0x3F, which is the ASCII code for a question mark.

.NET includes the EncoderReplacementFallback and DecoderReplacementFallback classes, which substitute a replacement string if a character does not map exactly in an encoding or decoding operation. By default, this replacement string is a question mark, but you can call a class constructor overload to choose a different string. Typically, the replacement string is a single character, although this is not a requirement. </excerpt>

ArgumentNullException

The value in a set operation is `null`.

InvalidOperationException

A value cannot be assigned in a set operation because the current Encoding object is read-only.

## Remarks

The DecoderFallback object represents an error handler that is invoked when an encoded byte sequence cannot be decoded into a character. Any one of the following handler types is supported:

  * A best-fit fallback handler, which replaces bytes that cannot be decoded with some suitable replacement character.

  * A replacement fallback handler, which replaces bytes that cannot be decoded with some arbitrary replacement character. .NET includes one replacement fallback handler, DecoderFallback, which by default replaces bytes that cannot be decoded with a question mark (&quot;?&quot;) character.

  * An exception fallback handler, which throws an exception when bytes cannot be decoded. .NET includes one exception fallback handler, DecoderExceptionFallback, which throws a DecoderFallbackException when bytes cannot be decoded.

<excerpt>citeturn0search4 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: last month; A decoding operation can fail if the input byte sequence cannot be mapped by the encoding.For example, an ASCIIEncoding object cannot decode a byte sequence if that sequence represents a character that has a code point value that is outside the range U+0000 to U+007F. ... NET Framework provides a predefined replacement fallback handler.The DecoderReplacementFallback class replaces each byte sequence that cannot be decoded with a question mark character (&quot;?&quot;, or U+003F) or a REPLACEMENT CHARACTER (U+FFFD).
They support the following three kinds of fallback handling mechanisms:

  * Best-fit fallback, which maps valid Unicode characters that cannot be decoded to an approximate equivalent. For example, a best-fit fallback handler for the ASCIIEncoding class might map Æ (U+00C6) to AE (U+0041 + U+0045). A best-fit fallback handler might also be implemented to transliterate one alphabet (such as Cyrillic) to another (such as Latin or Roman). The .NET Framework does not provide any public best-fit fallback implementations.

  * Replacement fallback, which replaces each character that cannot be decoded with a predefined string. The .NET Framework provides a predefined replacement fallback handler. The DecoderReplacementFallback class replaces each byte sequence that cannot be decoded with a question mark character (&quot;?&quot;, or U+003F) or a REPLACEMENT CHARACTER (U+FFFD). You can customize the replacement string by specifying a substitute in the call to the DecoderReplacementFallback.DecoderReplacementFallback(String) constructor. </excerpt>

Preserve non-ASCII values after an ASCII-only sample.

UTF.Unknown 2.6.0 returns ASCII for ASCII-only input. If the first 1 MiB is ASCII and a later displayed value is UTF-8, StreamReader decodes it as ASCII and replaces non-ASCII bytes with ?. Treat an ASCII result as inconclusive and use a strategy that preserves later UTF-8 data without silently corrupting legacy-encoded files.

Update the encoding selection around CharsetDetector.DetectFromStream so an
ASCII result is treated as inconclusive; use a strategy that considers later
non-ASCII data and preserves legacy encodings instead of decoding the file as
ASCII or blindly assuming UTF-8.

Route deferred PDF load failures through CurrentPluginFailed.

When _loadTask remains pending after Prepare, Plugin.View returns before loading finishes. The later callback converts a load failure into an error TextBlock, so it cannot reach the host’s exceptionHandler. QuickLook therefore skips CurrentPluginFailed and does not try the default viewer.

Pass the host failure callback into the deferred PDF path and invoke it with the captured exception. Do not rethrow from the later dispatcher callback, because it runs outside the host’s Plugin.View try/catch.

Update the deferred-load branch in Plugin.View so PDF load failures reach the
host’s CurrentPluginFailed callback instead of being shown only as an error
TextBlock. Pass the host failure callback into the deferred path and invoke it
with the exception returned by OnDocumentLoaded; do not rethrow from the
dispatcher callback.
