perf: stop the previous preview before matching the new path - #2042
The previous plugin was only cleaned up after FindMatch had probed the new path, so its background work (folder size counting, text loading...) kept competing for the disk with the new probe. It is now unloaded first, so it stops as soon as the selection changes.
Also logs the phases that run on the UI thread (unload, plugin matching, Prepare, View, Cleanup) when they take 100 ms or more, with the plugin and the file extension (never the file name), to QuickLook.Keyboard.log, to find which viewers still block switching to the next file.
Related Issue (if any)
None.
Additional Notes
Builds cleanly against current master (MSBuild, Release). No automated tests.
Touches the same lines of ViewWindowManager.ShowNewWindow as the "preview files and folders inside archives" PR of this series, so whichever is merged second needs a trivial conflict resolution.
Includes KeyboardLog.cs (identical to the copy in the other PRs of this series).
Slow preview operations now generate timing information, including plugin matching, cleanup, preparation, and display. This update does not change how previews work or affect the available features. Log entries are recorded in the background, with older log data rotated when the log grows beyond a size limit.
The previous plugin was only cleaned up after FindMatch had probed the

KeyboardLog.cs (the QuickLook.Keyboard.log writer) is included because
the timings are written there; it is identical to the copy added by the
Raw Input keyboard change.

QuickLook adds asynchronous logging for slow preview phases. It records elapsed times for plugin matching, cleanup, preparation, and viewing, then batches queued entries into a rotating log file.
Changes: Preview Timing Logs
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Queued logging and file output QuickLook/Helpers/KeyboardLog.cs
KeyboardLog queues timestamped messages without waiting for callers. It logs phases that take at least 100 ms. A background thread batches entries, creates the log directory, rotates files larger than 512 KiB to .old, and appends the batch. File-operation exceptions are ignored.
InvokePreview measures plugin unload and matching. ViewerWindow measures plugin cleanup, preparation, and viewing. Each phase reports its elapsed time and plugin or match details through KeyboardLog.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 4d502
The remaining risks are a potentially oversized diagnostic batch and exposure of a dotfile name in a local log. They warrant bounded fixes but do not establish a material preview failure.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 4d502
The new timing log can retain a selected dotfile’s full name despite its filename-exclusion intent. Exposure is limited to readers of the diagnostic files; logging requires a slow matching phase, and the inspected changes add no network destination or privilege expansion.
Retained concerns
Low · security · observed: The new diagnostic path treats Path.GetExtension as filename sanitization. For dotfiles it can persist the complete basename, introducing filename disclosure during successful slow matching rather than limiting diagnostics to a generic file type.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated disclosure affects selected-file names retained in this application’s current or rotated diagnostic file. Reading those files is required to obtain the disclosed value. Broader exposure through directory permissions, synchronization, or log sharing was not established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — The retained privacy finding traces a selected dotfile basename through Path.GetExtension into the new match-phase entry. When matching takes at least 100 ms and the entry is successfully written, a diagnostic-file reader can recover that basename. The base preview path had no equivalent match-timing persistence, so this is an introduced exposure.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Preview existence checks and extension filtering precede the new log source. Filtering defaults to blocklist mode, whose built-in blocklist contains .insv; it is not a general dotfile-exclusion control. The duration threshold reduces logging frequency but does not sanitize logged values.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — File writes are isolated from preview callers by the queue. Enqueueing does not wait for capacity, and file-operation exceptions are swallowed, making diagnostics best-effort rather than a durable security audit trail. The queue capacity bounds queued entries, not the total batch size or exact on-disk file size.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Use a bounded file-type classification before logging, mapping dotfiles and unrecognized suffixes to generic labels rather than persisting arbitrary path-derived text.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "perf: stop the previous preview before matching the new path" matches the main change. The diff moves unloading of the previous plugin ahead of FindMatch, so the old preview stops before the new path is probed. The title is short, specific, and uses a conventional prefix. The changeset also adds timing logs through KeyboardLog, which the title does not mention. That omission is expected because the title covers the primary change.

Queue is bounded at 1,000 entries, but WriteLoop drains entries until the queue is momentarily empty before writing. Entries added during that drain can make batch exceed 1,000. The current producers log only phases lasting at least 100 ms, so this does not establish major file-write starvation, but the batch still has no explicit bound.

Log a fixed marker for dotfile names instead of the full file name.
Path.GetExtension returns the whole name for a file such as .gitignore, because the leading dot starts the name rather than an extension. When the match phase is slow, line 178 writes that value into the log entry. ExtensionFilterHelper.IsExtensionAllowed admits these names unless the active list excludes the extension. In blocklist mode, it admits any extension that is not on the blocklist. In allowlist mode, it admits the name only when the allowlist is empty or lists the extension. A slow preview of a dotfile can therefore log its complete name.
Use a fixed marker for names that start with a dot and contain no other dot:
