fix: make Space handling robust (Raw Input listener, double-tap Space to edit) - #2039
Space could stop working until QuickLook was restarted, and releasing a held Space sometimes left the preview open. Root causes, found with a diagnostic log on a real machine:
The WH_KEYBOARD_LL hook ran on the UI thread. While a plugin loaded a large file the callback exceeded LowLevelHooksTimeout and Windows silently removed the hook. It is also not called for keys going to elevated windows, and other hooks (AutoHotkey, PowerToys) delayed or swallowed events, so key-ups were lost.
A lost Space key-up left _spaceIsDown set, so every later Space was treated as auto-repeat and ignored.
One shared _isPreviewRequest flag: any other valid key (e.g. an arrow) pressed while holding Space cancelled hold-to-close.
The "typed another key within 1 s" filter also applied to key-ups, and keystrokes injected by other software counted as typing.
Holds shorter than 750 ms were treated as taps even though the keyboard was already auto-repeating.
Changes:
GlobalKeyboardHook now listens through Raw Input (RIDEV_INPUTSINK) on its own thread (new RawKeyboardMonitor). QuickLook never blocks keys, Raw Input cannot be removed for being slow, and while the thread is busy input is queued, not lost.
KeystrokeDispatcher remembers per key whether its press was accepted; a release always completes exactly that press. A held Space counts as a hold once it auto-repeats (or after 750 ms) and releasing it closes the preview. A watchdog replays a Space key-up if Windows reports it released while QuickLook still thinks it is held.
New behaviour: double-tapping Space (two presses within 300 ms) closes the preview and opens the file with its "edit" verb (or default program). Controlled by a new DoubleSpaceToEdit setting, on by default, documented in OPTIONS.md.
Space is ignored while the preview reports unsaved changes, and an Escape that only left the viewer's editor does not also close it. The window asks the viewer via public HasUnsavedChanges / ConsumeEscape() members (found by reflection; plugins share no interface for them). Viewers without them are unaffected. The TextViewer side is in a separate PR.
QuickLook.Keyboard.log in the data folder records QuickLook's own keys, modifiers, focus changes and anomalies (never typed text).
Related Issue (if any)
None.
Additional Notes
Builds cleanly against current master (MSBuild, Release). There are no automated tests for this area.
KeyboardLog.cs is also included in the other PRs of this series that log to it; the copies are identical, so they merge without conflict.
The default of DoubleSpaceToEdit and the reflection hooks are the parts most open to discussion; happy to change them.
Press Space twice within 300 ms to close the preview and open the selected file for editing. This is enabled by default; when disabled, the second press toggles the preview as usual.
Improvements
When AutoCloseHolding is enabled, releasing Space after it has started repeating closes the preview.
Space and Escape input now better respects unsaved edits and text-entry fields, helping prevent unintended preview actions.

Space could stop working until QuickLook was restarted, and releasing a
held Space sometimes left the preview open. Causes found with a
diagnostic log on a real machine:
- The WH_KEYBOARD_LL hook ran on the UI thread; while a plugin loaded a
large file, callbacks exceeded LowLevelHooksTimeout and Windows
silently removed the hook. The hook is also not called for keys going
to elevated windows, and other hooks (AutoHotkey, PowerToys) delayed
or swallowed events, so key-ups got lost.
- A lost Space key-up left _spaceIsDown set, and every later Space was
treated as auto-repeat and ignored.
- One shared _isPreviewRequest flag: any other valid key (e.g. an
arrow) pressed while holding Space cancelled the hold-to-close.
- The "typed another key within 1 s" filter also applied to key-ups,
so a held Space was not closed on release; keystrokes injected by
other software counted as typing.
- Holds shorter than 750 ms were treated as taps even though the
keyboard was already auto-repeating.
- Releasing Space before the arrow key toggled (opened the newly
selected file) instead of closing.
Changes:
- GlobalKeyboardHook listens through Raw Input (RIDEV_INPUTSINK) on its
own thread instead of a low-level hook. QuickLook never blocks keys,
and Raw Input cannot be removed for being slow nor delayed by other
hooks; while the thread is busy, input is queued, not lost. Repeats
and modifiers are tracked from the input stream itself.
- KeystrokeDispatcher remembers per key whether its press was accepted;
a release always completes exactly that press. The typing filter
only applies to presses and ignores injected keystrokes.
- A held Space counts as a hold once it auto-repeats (or after 750 ms),
and releasing a hold closes the preview instead of toggling.
- A watchdog replays a Space key-up if Windows reports the key released
while QuickLook still considers it held.
- Double-tapping Space (two presses within 300 ms) closes the preview and
opens the selected file with the program associated with its "edit"
verb, or its default program. New DoubleSpaceToEdit setting, on by
default, documented in OPTIONS.md.
- Space is ignored while the preview reports unsaved changes, and an
Escape that only left the viewer's editor does not also close the
preview. The preview window asks the viewer through public
HasUnsavedChanges / ConsumeEscape() members (looked up by reflection,
plugins share no interface for them); viewers without them are
unaffected.
- QuickLook.Keyboard.log in the data folder records QuickLook's own keys,
modifiers, focus changes and anomalies (never typed text).

The change replaces the global keyboard hook with a Raw Input listener, updates key tracking and dispatch rules, and adds Space-key actions for editing or closing a preview. It also adds asynchronous keyboard diagnostics and documents the related options.

QL-Win/QuickLook#2035: Both changes filter global shortcuts when editable QuickLook text fields have focus.
Suggested reviewers:xupefei
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 6f703
This PR moves Space handling to a more reliable Raw Input listener, but three issues should be fixed before merge. Auto-typed keystrokes can be written to a persistent keyboard log. A double-tap Space can launch an executable through the default-verb fallback. With DoubleSpaceToEdit disabled, a rapid third Space press is still ignored.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 6f703
Keyboard diagnostics can now retain software-generated character keys, and the new edit action can launch a selected file rather than only preview it. These risks are concentrated in the desktop application's input, files, and execution context; access across user accounts or an elevation exploit has not been established.
Retained concerns
High · security · observed: The PR introduces persistent logging of injected invalid key identities before foreground eligibility is checked. This branch records character-key names directly rather than using the normal redaction helper, allowing sensitive software-generated input to be retained in the current and rotated diagnostic files. Disclosure requires access to those files; cross-user readership is not established.
Medium · security · inferred: The new Edit route can shell-launch a supplied or selected target without first establishing a validated, visible preview. Its default-verb fallback can execute an executable rather than open an editor. Direct pipe requests also avoid the keyboard-only eligibility and unsaved-edit guards. This expands launch reachability compared with the base preview-to-RunAndClose flow, although the pipe's effective caller permissions and any cross-identity impact remain unverified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The supported exposure is the application's desktop input stream, readable diagnostic files, and targets launched through its execution context. Sensitive-text disclosure depends on input reaching the injected-key branch and subsequent log access. Pipe access across accounts, elevated launch exploitation, and broader environmental compromise are not established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — The retained disclosure path is an event classified as injected, an invalid character key, direct interpolation of its key identity, and asynchronous persistence to the diagnostic log. Normal character-key redaction does not cover this branch. Persistent storage is new relative to the base's Debug output.
inferred — A permitted pipe client can now supply a target directly to Edit, while a qualifying double tap selects the same operation. The shell fallback can execute executable targets. This is an expanded launch capability, not a separately verified cross-user or privilege-escalation vulnerability.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The pipe name contains the current Windows SID, but its constructor supplies no explicit access descriptor and dispatch performs no client-token authorization. Keyboard actions have modifier, focus, text-input, and unsaved-edit checks; those checks do not authorize direct Edit pipe requests. The existing launch route already supported opening a previewed target, but required preview visibility and foreground conditions.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The bounded, nonblocking diagnostic queue and swallowed write failures isolate keyboard handling from disk failures. These controls improve failure containment but do not redact logged content or restrict readership of retained files.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Apply character-key redaction to every diagnostic branch, including injected events. Make sensitive diagnostics explicitly opt-in and define retention, deletion, and file-permission requirements for both installed and portable storage.
proposed — Define editing separately from executable/default-verb launch authority. Centralize target and lifecycle checks in the edit consumer, require deliberate authorization for execution-capable fallback, and document the pipe's permitted callers and effective access controls.

Do not log the key code of injected keystrokes. This can write typed text to disk.
Software such as password-manager auto-type, text expanders, and remote-input tools sends characters through SendInput. These events have IsInjected == true and are not in _validKeys. Line 111 writes e.KeyCode for each of them to QuickLook.Keyboard.log. The log can therefore contain an auto-typed password, one key code per line. The log is always on. Its purpose is to be attached to bug reports.
This conflicts with the stated rule that typed text is never recorded. DescribeKey already redacts text keys for the non-injected path. Use it here as well.

Apply the double-tap quiet period only when DoubleSpaceToEdit is enabled.
Lines 199-202 detect a double tap and start the 1-second _spaceSuppressedUntil window on the hook thread. They do not check the DoubleSpaceToEdit setting. InvokeRoutine reads that setting later, on the UI thread.
When the option is False, the second Space still toggles the preview. A third Space within 1 second is then silently ignored by line 169. OPTIONS.md says that with the option off, a second Space "toggles the preview like any other press". Rapid open, close, open sequences now lose the third press.
SettingHelper is UI-thread only, so do not read it here. Cache the value in a volatile field that InvokeRoutine refreshes. Then use the field in the hook-thread logic.

Do not fall back to the default verb for executable file types. A double-tap Space can run a program.
DoubleSpaceToEdit is on by default. Space is a key users press repeatedly. For types with no registered edit verb, the loop retries with Verb = null and UseShellExecute = true. For .exe, .msi, .lnk, .jar, .scr, and similar types, the default verb runs or installs the file. A double tap on a downloaded installer or an unknown program therefore executes it.
Enter already runs files, but that is a deliberate key. A double tap is easy to trigger by accident. Skip the launch for executable types before the loop. Extend the list as needed.
