Description

Stage routing dataset downloads and extraction before replacing existing data. Failed downloads or extraction now return an error; a failure while publishing restores the previous destinations. S3 updates retain existing files, and the script no longer removes an unrelated tmp directory.

Issue

Fixes #2276

Testing

  • python -m unittest discover -s ci/tests -p test_get_test_data.py: 7 tests passed, covering failed downloads and extraction, successful multi-archive extraction, S3 success and failure, symlink-safe S3 merging, and rollback after a publish failure. The same suite against the base failed in 5 cases.
  • pre-commit run --files datasets/get_test_data.sh ci/test_cpp.sh ci/tests/test_get_test_data.py passed. The routing C++ test script now runs the downloader tests before downloading datasets.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The dataset downloader now stages and validates S3 or HTTP data before publishing it. It backs up existing destinations and restores them after failed publication. A new test suite checks these paths, and the C++ test script runs the suite before routing dataset downloads.

Changes: Dataset downloader

Layer / File(s) Summary
Download staging and fallback
datasets/get_test_data.sh, ci/tests/test_get_test_data.py
Downloads and extraction now use staging directories. The script checks staged datasets and falls back to HTTP when S3 results are incomplete. Tests cover archive destinations and S3 fallback.
Transactional publication and regression coverage
datasets/get_test_data.sh, ci/tests/test_get_test_data.py, ci/test_cpp.sh
The script backs up existing destinations before installation and restores backups after failed or interrupted publication. Tests cover failed downloads, replacement, symlinks, and publication failure. The C++ test script runs this suite when the test group is not mathopt.

Explanation

[#2276] Staging, S3 merge and rollback handling, downloader tests, and their CI invocation support safe dataset replacement and failure reporting. Preserving the unrelated tmp directory also supports safe staging.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#2276] HTTP downloads and extraction use staging and return errors on failure. The tests cover these failures and publication rollback. S3 archive extraction and S3 sync share the same staging directory. If the archive command extracts files but fails, and a subsequent empty sync succeeds, validation can accept the failed archive's files as a complete dataset. The script can then return success and overwrite existing files with those files.

Resolution

Discard or isolate files from a failed S3 archive attempt before sync. Add a regression test for a failed archive that leaves files followed by a successful empty sync.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 6 functions across 3 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Record the backup before the move.

If INT or TERM arrives after mv succeeds but before backed_up is updated, cleanup can delete the original dataset without restoring it. Cleanup already skips backup entries that do not exist.

Record the destination before moving the staged dataset.

If INT or TERM arrives after the staged move but before installed+=, cleanup does not process the current destination. It leaves the replacement installed and retains the original in the recovery workspace. The replacement was validated, and the original remains recoverable from the reported workspace, so this is a minor interruption-recovery gap rather than a major data-loss issue.

Recording the destination first also handles a failed mv: cleanup can remove a partially installed destination before restoring the backup.
