Hierarchy and unfold handling

  • The index router now builds its hierarchy from declared driver paths and per-unfold input and output layers, including implicit ancestor paths.
  • It resolves chained unfold hierarchy paths independently of registration order, and rejects empty driver hierarchies, undeclared paths, cycles, and output-layer collisions.
  • Unfold flush expectations are keyed by the resolved parent-path hash rather than the input layer name, distinguishing same-named layers on different hierarchy branches.
  • Unknown paths now cause index_is_lowest_layer to throw instead of being treated as lowest.
  • Multi-layer unfold execution remains disabled in this PR; fix(core): join-domain behavior and multilayer unfolds #987 removes that restriction.

Partition completion

  • Flush tokens now aggregate committed counts from matching descendant layers into one entry per receiving slot.
  • The data-cell tracker records driver-owned child layers and can report zero-count children when closing empty partitions.
  • Zero-count repeater entries remain cached until both the flush and product message arrive.

Fold inputs

  • Fold registration and fold_join_node require at least one data product, removing the empty-input counting-layer fallback.
  • The partition index still belongs to the configured partition layer. Accumulator completion still counts the first input product’s layer; order-independent multi-layer fold accounting is handled in fix(core): join-domain behavior and multilayer unfolds #987.

API and supporting changes

  • index_router::unfold_data now stores per-unfold specifications. finalize accepts driver paths and unfold data by const reference.
  • layer_path adds contains and components.
  • A default-constructed fixed_hierarchy represents only the job layer and rejects child indices. Explicitly empty path collections are rejected.

Tests

  • Added coverage for hierarchy validation, unfold ordering and collisions, combined completion counts, empty driver-owned partitions, and zero-count repeater message ordering.
  • This summary describes the added test coverage, not test-run results.

📝 Walkthrough

This change updates driver hierarchy construction, unfold routing, and completion-count handling. It also adjusts fold input constraints, repeater cache cleanup, and pointer map accessors.

Changes: Hierarchy and completion flow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Driver paths and tracker flushes
phlex/model/layer_path.*, phlex/model/fixed_hierarchy.*, phlex/model/data_cell_tracker.*, plugins/layer_generator.cpp, test/fixed_hierarchy_test.cpp, test/layer_generator_test.cpp, test/layer_path_test.cpp
Layer paths expose component access. Fixed hierarchies default to the job path and reject undeclared indices. The tracker records configured driver children and initializes zero-count flush entries for them.
Unfold hierarchy construction and routing
phlex/core/framework_graph.cpp, phlex/core/index_router.*, test/CMakeLists.txt, test/index_router_test.cpp
Graph finalization passes driver paths and unfold specifications to the router. The router expands and validates paths, rejects conflicting or cyclic outputs, and tracks expected unfolds by parent path.
Completion counts and fold behavior
phlex/core/index_router.*, phlex/core/message.hpp, phlex/core/fold_join_node.hpp, phlex/core/registration_api.hpp, phlex/core/detail/repeater_node.cpp, test/index_router_test.cpp, test/fold_duplicate_layer_name_test.cpp, test/repeater_node_test.cpp
The router combines matching descendant counts into completion tokens. Fold declarations require at least one data product. Repeater cleanup waits for both a flush and the product message. Tests cover combined counts, duplicate paths, and both product/flush arrival orders.

Pointer map accessors

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pointer map accessors
phlex/utilities/simple_ptr_map.hpp
The map documents size() as a public member function and declares begin() and end() noexcept.

Normalize driver paths and their intermediate ancestors, and expand grouped
unfold inputs with a worklist. Record expectations per parent path and
reject cycles, output collisions, and undeclared runtime paths.

Give default drivers a job-only hierarchy, reject explicitly empty
declarations, and initialize routing for driver-only graphs. Include the
hierarchy, collision, and declaration regressions with these prerequisites.

Deliver one completion token per receiving slot, summing applicable
descendant counts. Retain zero-count completion state until its product
arrives so arrival order cannot strand cached products.

Report zero-count driver-owned children when empty partitions close,
without synthesizing counts for children owned by unfolds. Cover repeated
layer names, empty partitions, sparse counts, and both arrival orders.

Preserves work originally aided by GPT-6 Luna.
Reject accumulator-only and resource-only folds, and distinguish the
product count from the total argument count in fold-join templates.

Use the nonempty-input invariant to remove the empty-layer fallback.
Invocation-domain selection follows in the shared join-registration change.
