Summary

Adds netprotocols.PIM, a PIM-SM (RFC 7761) decoder. IP protocol 103 dispatches to it from IPv4 and from IPv6. The PR also adds PIM checksums to compute/verify/Packet.with_checksums(), and a real FRR capture joins the corpus. Part of the Tier 2 roadmap (#172).

Closes #184

What's included

  • src/netprotocols/layer3/pim.py: one PIM class serves both IP families.

    • It decodes the 4-byte common header and keeps the rest as a raw body.
    • PIM.message parses a typed message on demand: PIMHello (option TLVs plus typed option accessors), PIMRegister, PIMRegisterStop, PIMJoinPrune (also used for Graft and Graft-Ack) and PIMAssert. Every other type keeps its body raw.
    • Encoded-Unicast, Encoded-Group and Encoded-Source addresses are sized by their own address family.
    • PIM has no length field, so decode bounds a message by its own structure:
      • counts and addresses for the bounded types;
      • for a Hello, a zero tail where the next option would start;
      • for a Register, the end of the buffer.
    • Past the header, decode never raises.
  • Checksums.

    • The internet checksum covers the whole message, except a Register, where it covers the first 8 bytes (§4.9.3).
    • Over IPv6 an IPv6 pseudo-header is included.
    • verify() also accepts a whole-message Register checksum, as §4.9.3 asks receivers to.
  • _tlv.walk_kind_length_value(width=...) walks PIM Hello options, which have a 2-byte type and a 2-byte length. Its byte-wide callers are pinned to their previous behaviour.

  • Fixture and capture script.

    • scripts/capture_fixtures_pim.sh runs two FRR 8.4 routers on four netns. tests/fixtures/pim.pcap holds 13 frames, one of each kind.
    • scripts/check_fixtures.py independently verifies every PIM checksum, including a Register's encapsulated packet and an IPv6 Null-Register's dummy header.
    • The corpus is now 246 frames across 26 scenarios.
  • Tests. PIM is added to:

    • the fuzz suite (ALL_PROTOCOLS, a round-trip strategy, accessor-safety and trailer properties);
    • the contract and truncation tests;
    • the corpus checksum cases and coverage set.

    The capture host has no IPv6, so constructed frames cover PIM over IPv6. Constructed messages also cover Assert, Graft and the raw types.

  • Merge of master (VRRP, RIP, OSPF), 6b34a49.

    • Every shared registration point keeps both sides.
    • The PIM and OSPF arms of check_fixtures._check_upper_v4 move into a new _check_routing_v4 helper, so the dispatcher stays at radon B.
    • CLAIMS §5.1–5.3 and the pyproject coverage comment are re-derived:
      • 29 protocols in ALL_PROTOCOLS;
      • 25 in TestGeneralizedRoundTrips;
      • 3,887 statements, 1 miss.

Verification

  • uv run ruff check and uv run ruff format --check are clean
  • uv run mypy is clean (strict)
  • uv run pytest passes locally: 4488 passed
  • CHANGELOG.md has an entry under ## [Unreleased]
  • python3 scripts/check_fixtures.py tests/fixtures reports "246 frames across 26 files … All files internally consistent."
  • uvx bandit -q -r -t B324 src scripts tests is clean, and nothing new sits at radon C or worse.

New protocol or dispatch change — also:

  • Followed the add-a-protocol cookbook in ARCHITECTURE.md and the decode contract in src/netprotocols/_base.py
  • New IPProtocol number (PIM = 0x67) carries its display name in lockstep
  • Registered the class in the fuzz suite (tests/test_fuzz.py::ALL_PROTOCOLS)
  • Added a real-capture fixture and updated tests/fixtures/MANIFEST.md
  • Updated the README coverage table and the ARCHITECTURE.md chain diagram

Notes

  • This branch changes checksum.py and _tlv.py, which are in mutmut scope, so mutation.yml gets dispatched on it. Local scoped runs left no survivor beyond the one already allowlisted.
  • Independent review found and fixed four problems:
    • a quadratic Hello zero-tail scan;
    • missing IPv6 Null-Register checks;
    • IANA names for option 18 and message types 10–12;
    • a memoryview regression.

PIM Hello options (RFC 7761 §4.9.2) have the shape the walker already
handles for IPv6 -- a type, a length counting only the value, no
terminator, no floor -- but with 2-byte type and length fields. A
`width` keyword (default 1) reads both with int.from_bytes and scales
every offset that was 2 (the header the length does or does not
count, the data's start, the structural length floor) to 2 * width.

The floor and the overrun message depend only on the call's
parameters, so they are now derived once per call in `_layout`
instead of per option. That takes walk_kind_length_value from radon
C (13) to B (10).

Every byte-wide caller (TCP, IPv4, the IPv6 options headers) is
unchanged: a new test runs a seeded sample of 3000 inputs and
parameter combinations through both the new walker and a verbatim
copy of the old one and requires the same pairs and the same error,
message and structured fields included. The scoped mutation run
('netprotocols._tlv.*') leaves no survivor.

The ICMPv6, TCP and UDP arms all build a pseudo-header from the
enclosing IP layer; they now live, unchanged and in the same order, in
_transport_checksum, which compute() calls for those three classes.
That takes compute() from radon B (10) to B (7), leaving room for a
new arm without crossing into C, as the GRE and SCTP helpers did
before it.

PIM is one class for both IP families, registered in ip.proto and
inherited by ip.proto.v6: its encoded addresses carry their own address
family, so only the checksum's IPv6 pseudo-header depends on the IP
header around it. PIM models the 4-byte common header as fields and
keeps the rest raw in `body`, as IGMP does; `PIM.message` dispatches on
`type` through a parser table to PIMHello (option TLVs walked by the
shared _tlv walker at width 2, with holdtime / lan_prune_delay /
dr_priority / generation_id / address_list), PIMRegister (B/N bits and
the encapsulated packet, decodable via a lax walk), PIMRegisterStop,
PIMJoinPrune (also Graft and Graft-Ack) and PIMAssert. Bootstrap,
C-RP-Adv, State Refresh and unknown types keep their body raw.
Encoded-Unicast/Group/Source addresses are typed values sized by their
own family; non-native encodings raise InvalidFieldError from the
accessor.

PIM has no length field and the walk does not trim to the IP length,
so decode bounds a message by its own structure: counted messages end
where their counts say, a Hello leaves a zero tail where the next
option would start, and a Register's data packet runs to the end of
the buffer, which its 8-byte checksum does not cover. A body the parser
cannot read is kept whole, so decode never raises past the header; a
version other than 2 is rejected.

checksum.compute/verify gain the PIM arm: the whole message, or a
Register's first 8 bytes, behind the IPv6 pseudo-header over IPv6;
verify also accepts a Register summed whole (RFC 7761 §4.9.3), and
Packet.with_checksums fills PIM.

The fixture pim.pcap (13 frames) is scripts/capture_fixtures_pim.sh's
selection from two FRR 8.4 routers between a source and an IGMPv3
receiver: Hellos (Address List, goodbye), a data Register and a
Null-Register, a Register-Stop and seven Join/Prune messages. FRR sums
Registers over 8 bytes. check_fixtures.py verifies every PIM checksum
independently, IPv6 pseudo-header included, and the Register's inner
packet. IPv6 PIM, Assert, Graft and the raw types are covered by
constructed messages, since the capture host has no IPv6.

FRR 8.4's pim_msg_send() builds the outer IPv4 header itself (ID, TOS,
TTL, addresses) and sends with IP_HDRINCL, IPPROTO_RAW for Registers,
so the kernel fills in only the header checksum and total length; the
capture script and MANIFEST said the kernel built it. The script also
said R1 decremented the encapsulated packet's TTL, which the capture
contradicts (it is 16, as the source sent it).

The PIM module docstring now says what the internet checksum cannot
see: over IPv4 it is blind to zero bytes, and a Register's covers 8
bytes only. ARCHITECTURE's "Two protocols vary this" counts PIM, and
the CHANGELOG quotes RFC 7761's reason for accepting a whole-message
Register checksum instead of paraphrasing it.

_parse_hello asked `not any(body[end:])` at every empty type-0 option
and again on a walk error, rescanning the rest of the body each time,
so a Hello made of empty type-0 options made PIM.decode and
PIM.message quadratic: a 64 KB one took about 2.2 s to decode.

Compute where the zero tail starts once, `len(body.rstrip(b"\0"))`,
and test the cursor against it. The two forms are equivalent: the
remainder from `end` is all zeros exactly when `end` is at or past
that point, and an option starting there has a zero length, so the old
`not value` test is implied. A comparison of the previous parser
against this one over 600,000 random Hello bodies (two seeds; options,
zero tails, nonzero trailers, cuts, all-zero and empty bodies) and 30
fixed and large cases found the same options, end, and error type,
message, field and offset for every one. The 64 KB case now decodes in
about 16 ms.

The regression test counts the bytes the parser reads out of the body
through slicing and indexing (a bytes subclass passed as PIM.body)
rather than timing it, which would be flaky under coverage tracing;
it fails on the old code and reads each byte about once on the new.
No other PIM parser or accessor rescans: Join/Prune, Register-Stop,
Assert and the Address List read each address once at a cursor.

_check_pim_register skipped a Null-Register whenever inner[10:12] was
zero, a dummy IPv4 header's zero header checksum, without checking the
inner version. For an IPv6 dummy header those bytes are source-address
bytes, so an RFC 7761 §4.9.3 IPv6 Null-Register (dummy IPv6 header,
then a dummy PIM header of version 0 with a correct checksum) either
passed silently as pim-null-register-unchecked (source ::1) or was
sent back into _check_pim and failed as pim-version (2001:db8::10).

Take the zero-checksum skip only for an inner IPv4 header. For an
inner IPv6 one, check the dummy PIM header directly, as §4.9.3 asks
("if the dummy PIM header is present, the recipient SHOULD check the
checksum") and as FRR's receive path does: its checksum over the IPv6
pseudo-header of the dummy header's source and group, upper-layer
length 4, next header 103. The RFC names nothing else to check. An
absent dummy PIM header has no checksum and passes, counted unchecked;
one cut short counts as truncated. The Null-Register dispatch is its
own helper so _check_pim_register stays at radon B.

The tests build the frame for both source cases and fail on the old
checker: each passes, counts one PIM message, and fails as
pim-null-register-checksum when its dummy checksum or group is
tampered with.

Two claims in pim.py said more than is true.

RFC 5384's type 1 Encoded-Source "cannot be sized": it can. Its join
attributes are TLVs, |F|E|Attr_Type(6)|Length(8)|Value, ending at the
one with the E bit set (RFC 5384 §3.4.1). It stays out of scope, and
message still raises for it, but the module docstring, _read_encoded
and PIM.message now say it is not supported; an unknown address family
or an encoding type no RFC defines genuinely cannot be sized, and they
still say so. The CHANGELOG already said "supported" and is unchanged.

The checksum paragraph said that over IPv4 a nonzero trailer kept in
body fails. It fails only when its bytes have a nonzero share of the
one's-complement sum: FRAMES[1] + ffff0000 is kept as a phantom option
and + 1234edcb makes message raise, and both verify. Say that, and
pin both with a test. The Register remarks ("a trailer cannot break
it", "says nothing about the data packet") hold only for the 8-byte
checksum form; scope them to it.

Hello option 18 is "Deprecated" in the IANA PIM-Hello Options registry
(RFC 7761 deprecates it), not "DR Priority (deprecated)". The IANA PIM
Message Types registry assigns 10 DF Election (RFC 5015), 11 ECMP
Redirect (RFC 6754) and 12 PIM Flooding Mechanism (RFC 8364);
type_name now names them instead of reading "unknown (n)", and they
stay raw like the other types without a parser. 13-15 (RFC 9436's type
space extension) still read unknown.

RFC 9436, which updates RFC 7761, renames the common header's reserved
byte "Flag Bits" and lets each type define its own (Bootstrap's
No-Forward, Assert's Packed and Aggregated, Register-Stop's Packing
Capability). PIM.reserved and the module docstring now say so; the
field keeps its name and none of the bits is decoded.

…tants

Three mutants of pim.py survived the suite: reading the Assert R bit
as `preference >> 30`, the LAN Prune Delay T bit as `delay >> 14`, and
dropping PIMAssert's metric range check. The existing cases had R=1
and T=1 with the next bit clear, and no case built an out-of-range
metric.

Add an Assert with R=0 under metric preference 0x7FFFFFFF (bit 30 set),
a LAN Prune Delay with T=0 under propagation delay 0x7FFF (bit 14 set),
and constructor cases for metric -1 and 2**32. Each mutant, applied in
place, now fails tests/test_pim.py.

…fect

verify() accepts what the governing RFC tells a receiver to accept,
which can be more than compute() produces: a UDP-over-IPv4 checksum of
0, a GRE header without the C bit, and a PIM Register summed over the
whole message (RFC 7761 §4.9.3: such a message "should also be
accepted"). Say that once in its docstring, and note the consequence
for PIM: a whole-message Register verifies, but with_checksums()
rewrites it to the 8-byte form, which a new test pins. The CHANGELOG
entry says the same. Docstring-only in checksum.py.

kind_of() unpacked `(group, joined, pruned), = join_prune(body)`, which
raises ValueError on a Join/Prune carrying more than one group set, and
FRR 8.4's pimd can aggregate groups toward one upstream neighbour into
one message. Every kind the selection keeps has one group set, so
return None for a multi-group message; WANTED and the composition
check still fail the run unless each kind was seen.

Checked without re-capturing: bash -n and py_compile of the embedded
selection and composition scripts pass; running the selection over the
committed pim.pcap reproduces it byte for byte, and over a copy with an
added two-group Join/Prune it skips that frame and still yields the
same 13 frames, where the old selection raised ValueError.

MANIFEST's header says checksum ground-truth frames were captured
inbound only, but pim.pcap was captured on R1's side, so R1's Hello
and both Registers (frames 1, 4 and 8) are outbound. Say so in the row
and the note, and why it is harmless, as the SCTP note does: pimd
computes every PIM checksum itself in userspace, the kernel computes
IPv4 header checksums in software, the script asks ethtool to turn
veth offloads off, and check_fixtures verifies them all.

Re-wrap the README "Why" paragraph line that the corpus-wording change
left at 83 columns back to the file's 72 (wording unchanged), and give
test_pim_keeps_a_cut_message a docstring.

Follow-up to the two previous fixes: the Flag Bits remark pushed a
module docstring line past 80 columns (E501), and the IPv6
Null-Register sources were a mutable class attribute (RUF012).

The two helpers added for the IPv6 Null-Register check used the file's
older one-paragraph docstring layout; give them a one-line summary and
a body so the PEP 257 D check reports nothing new in touched files.

The docstring said the patched address was a Register-Stop's
Encoded-Group; capture frame 2 is a Join/Prune, and body offset 0 is
its upstream neighbor, an Encoded-Unicast. The point stands: RFC 5384
defines encoding type 1 only for an Encoded-Source.

From the fix review of #184: the linear zero-tail scan called
body.rstrip(), which a memoryview lacks, so PIM(body=memoryview(...))
.message, which parsed at 44211d9, raised AttributeError, outside the
ProtocolError contract. decode() always passes bytes, so only direct
construction reached it. The scan now strips bytes(body); the walk
itself still reads body as before. A test builds the same Hello from a
memoryview and from bytes, and the cost test now also asserts the
counted path is read at all.

Both sides add IP-protocol decoders, so every shared registration
point conflicted; each resolution keeps both sides:

- checksum.py: compute() dispatches OSPF, VRRP, then PIM before the
  pseudo-header transports, and PIM's private _transport_checksum
  gives way to master's _pseudo_header_checksum; verify() keeps the
  OSPF crypto-AuType case and adds PIM's.
- packet.py: with_checksums() fills VRRP's and PIM's checksums.
- _enums, _defaults, exports and the test suites: OSPF (89), PIM
  (103), VRRP (112) side by side, in numeric order.
- scripts/check_fixtures.py: _check_upper_v4 would have reached
  radon grade C with both PIM and OSPF arms, so they move into a new
  _check_routing_v4 helper (A); the dispatcher stays at B.
- Docs: the corpus is now 246 frames across 26 scenarios, thirteen
  captured separately; CLAIMS 5.1-5.3 and the pyproject coverage
  comment are re-derived (29 protocols in ALL_PROTOCOLS, 25 in
  TestGeneralizedRoundTrips, 3,887 statements with 1 miss). The
  branch's CHANGELOG entries stay under [Unreleased], and its entry
  about README's "Why" wording is dropped: master already reworded
  that sentence.

… the merge

The merge replaced the branch's _transport_checksum with master's
_pseudo_header_checksum, so the entry describing the refactor named a
helper that no longer exists.

Do not copy the full buffer for each option slice.

PIM.message passes the test body directly to walk_kind_length_value. The walker makes three __getitem__ calls per two-byte option. Therefore bytes(self) can copy about 3.07 GB for each parameterized case, or about 6.15 GB across both cases.

bytes.__getitem__(self, key) returns identical slice and index results without copying the full buffer.
