From fd33f164c175c4e4d41f0e096a0ae6f85ad9d701 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Devendra Kumar Sinha Date: Sun, 4 Oct 2026 11:04:14 +0530 Subject: [PATCH] fuzz(flatbuf): add fuzz harness for FunctionCall/FunctionCallResult decode MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Add a libfuzzer-based fuzz target that directly exercises the FlatBuffers decode path for FunctionCall and FunctionCallResult — the host-side parsing of guest-controlled wire data arriving via the G2H virtqueue. Previously these decode paths had no direct fuzz coverage; existing fuzzers (guest_call, host_call) exercise them only indirectly through a full sandbox. This harness isolates the parsing logic without requiring a hypervisor. Uses a BoundedSource that mirrors RecvChain semantics: take_bytes/take_chunks reject reads beyond available data, matching production behavior. Initial run (~1M iterations): - Coverage: ~960 branch points - exec/s: ~110,000 - No crashes found Signed-off-by: Devendra Kumar Sinha --- fuzz/.gitignore | 8 +-- fuzz/Cargo.toml | 9 ++++ fuzz/fuzz_targets/flatbuf_decode.rs | 82 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 3 files changed, 95 insertions(+), 4 deletions(-) create mode 100644 fuzz/fuzz_targets/flatbuf_decode.rs diff --git a/fuzz/.gitignore b/fuzz/.gitignore index 1a45eee776..a663f983cb 100644 --- a/fuzz/.gitignore +++ b/fuzz/.gitignore @@ -1,4 +1,4 @@ -target -corpus -artifacts -coverage +corpus/ +artifacts/ +coverage/ +*.log diff --git a/fuzz/Cargo.toml b/fuzz/Cargo.toml index eeaa7ef2a2..df60a850dd 100644 --- a/fuzz/Cargo.toml +++ b/fuzz/Cargo.toml @@ -9,6 +9,8 @@ cargo-fuzz = true [dependencies] libfuzzer-sys = "0.4" +anyhow = "1" +bytes = "1" hyperlight-testing = { workspace = true } hyperlight-host = { workspace = true, default-features = true, features = ["fuzzing"]} hyperlight-common = {workspace = true} @@ -65,3 +67,10 @@ bench = false [features] default = [] trace = ["hyperlight-host/trace_guest", "hyperlight-common/trace_guest"] + +[[bin]] +name = "flatbuf_decode" +path = "fuzz_targets/flatbuf_decode.rs" +test = false +doc = false +bench = false diff --git a/fuzz/fuzz_targets/flatbuf_decode.rs b/fuzz/fuzz_targets/flatbuf_decode.rs new file mode 100644 index 0000000000..feb0bc6d27 --- /dev/null +++ b/fuzz/fuzz_targets/flatbuf_decode.rs @@ -0,0 +1,82 @@ +#![no_main] + +use bytes::Bytes; +use hyperlight_common::flatbuffer_wrappers::function_call::FunctionCall; +use hyperlight_common::flatbuffer_wrappers::function_types::FunctionCallResult; +use hyperlight_common::flatbuffer_wrappers::ExternalValueSource; +use hyperlight_common::transport::{size_prefix_payload_len, SIZE_PREFIX_LEN}; +use libfuzzer_sys::fuzz_target; + +// Bounded external-value source mirroring `RecvChain` semantics: it yields only +// the trailing external payload (the bytes after the size-prefixed control +// buffer), rejects reads past the end, and rejects unconsumed trailing bytes in +// `finish`.
